This is a good analysis. A balanced view from someone actually training in both forms. UA-cam is filled with comments from jeolous JJJ guys saying stuff like “but Bjj would never work in a real fight because they can’t pull guard in the streets” and Bjj guys saying stuff like “all traditional Asian martial arts are crap, MMA and Bjj is the only way”. I’m getting sick of both these comments. Bjj guys (I’m one of them) need to realize that jiu jitsu started way before Royce Gracie and JJJ guys need to understand that unless you’re rolling like we do, you’re not gonna stand a chance. On the mats OR on the street.
Bro, if we about to have a fight and you start rolling on the floor, I turn around and run off. So it is a big W for me. But I guess you reffered to a different type of people ;)
Look up Jukido Jujutsu. It’s Japanese Jujutsu with Judo as part of it’s training methodology but mixed with classical Jujutsu techniques and tactics and other striking arts thrown in. It’s in Palm Coast, FL. They do pressure testing and randori. Also Triatic Jutsu and Nihon Jujutsu also pressure test and spar. Same with trio martial arts which has Judo, Aikijujutsu and other stuff.
Thank you for recognizing the difference between most Gjj vs. Bjj. I trained to Blue belt at a Rickson lineage Gjj school that required demonstrating a competent level of execution Gjj self defense and non-competition Bjj techniques with resisting partner. I recognize this is becoming rarer.
I did bjj for just more than 2 years and now I'm into aikido. Your analysis is spot on, bjj is very good to learn how to grapple(fight without strikes) but in an everyday self defense situation it's not the most useful thing. Every style has its tips for self defense and bjj is no outlier but most of it is directed towards the competitive side. You will find flaws in every martial art and combat sport and that kind of awareness is important.
As a practitioner of Japanese jujitsu first and then Judo and BJJ, you nailed it! I would add that a black belt Judoka or a sport BJJ practitioner purple belt and up, the tweak is minimal to transition them to self defense.
I brought my son to infants JJJ, 2 years BJJ, and now doing both shinkiokushin and BJJ (in MMA gym) at the same time ove 1 year (BJJ for around 3 years in total). Planning to bring him back to JJJ (now called MMA sparring) to learn how to combine striking and grappling. It's good he already was able to apply his skills against not trained but much bigger opponent ❤ (once so far)
Great insights! I would add though that in any martial art including wrestling/grappling you must always practice each technique with a nonresistant partner to learn and perfect each move and yes also must train with a resisting opponent to learn to adapt each technique.
@@acd-combatives Agreed! I was fortunate to train in a rare Japanese jujitsu school that had intensive Randori as part of the curriculum. When I later studied BJJ, it translated very easily, which I am thankful for.
We do JJIF ju-jitsu and fight in mma, like you put it nicely; bjj is a general term and japanese jujitsu is a general term too...people forget that, not all "bjj" is equal nor is japanese ju jitsu, but at the end of the day it's all the same body mechanics
I did train japanese jujutsu in shrinkage Ryu jujutsu style of a master who went to japan at the main temple where this style born. After a couple of months I just dropped, very mediocre striking, akidio type submissions and very stiff and spazzy training partners, got injured multiple times on drilling takedowns. If you want good takedowns just train judo or wrestling, if u want to improve striking just traing muay thai, kickboxing or just boxing. You will be years light better than this japanese jujutsu dudes.

Nice skills level self defense techniques
Thanks for your comment.
You should give the Gunji Taiho Jutsu student curriculums a look. They are at Gunji University online.

I agree. Working with a non-resisting partner to ingrain the proper technique is crucial.
Like ju jitsu self defense demo techniques grappling wrestling technique mma skills
Wonderful breakdown of the pros and cons of each style. Respect!
Thanks. I Legitimately love both interpolations of Ju Jitsu. I think both systems are equally legit when practiced with intent.

Yes, JJIF ju-jitsu is legit!

Really appreciate the content. I watch almost every video.
I appreciate that!
Wait aren't these guys doing exactly what he's talking about with soft sparring.

I agree. See this video for details:

agree, but I don't really want to use it against a hobo who may have aids.
Ronda Rousy was Judo. But good video otherwise.
Great video and free Palestine 👍
Awesome video but i think you're being a little nice about BJJ. 😀
