Thank you very much Stanley Kubrick for being so petty and on behalf of Warner Bros in suing The Scala for showing A clockwork Orange. You bankrupted the place that they had no option other than to close it down.
A big chunk of my youth was taken away from me in having that ability to sit in the building and watch films in which i had only heard of and had no chance of seeing. It was such a great place ..

No. It shut because the lease ran out and the new one offered was too expensive. Blame the greedy landlord.

@@kamandi1362 Yeah, 3 years later i found that out because of the documentary that has come out.The court case couldn`t have helped either.

for more information i recommend SCALA CINEMA 1978-1993 by Jane Giles, the definitive work about the Scala Cinema and published as a small little pocket booklet by FAB Press that you can easily fold up and put in the back pocket of your -pants- trousers

It's an amazing labor of love (possibly also a potential murder weapon), thanks for the recommendation. My copy arrived yesterday and it's going to take a while to go through it all, love the photo of the lobby/dancefloor on the inside cover. Was happy to see that the month-by-month original programs include information on the all night parties with DJs, they were the first all-nighters I ever went to.

Would've loved to been at this cinema in-person. Sure London has the PCC but it's just not the same especially considering PCC is so expensive and are now more reliant on 4K and DCP not 35 mm screenings regrettably.

Dropped acid during the Koyaanisqatsi double bill and had to be escorted out of the building by the staff as I was still sitting in the auditorium when everyone had gone home. Needless to say negotiating the tube at Kings Cross was a challenge.

Am sure it was! I was probably there that night too, no doubt in some sort of state. Always caught Koyaanisqatsi when it was shown at The Scala, or at The Roxy in Wardour St, another special place of the times
