DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

Azumarill is one of the biggest reasons the physical/special split in DPP was needed... Without it, giving a pure water type the Huge Power ability made no sense whatsoever...
Medicham had the same problem with it's psychic stab. There were literally thousands of reasons for the split.

It's funny, Azumarill is one of the few Pokemon that seemed to have gotten buffed almost every generation... from an ability, to huge power to physical special split, fairy type, Aqua Jet + Belly Drum.....
From trash to Pokegod status...

Exactly why I bred for a shiny marill in BDSP and used a shiny Bellydrum Azumarill to get to 100 wins in the battle tower
In gen 2, It wasn't very viable in OU or UU, But in NU is were it shines, Belly Drum Azumarill shines in that tier
I love Azumarrill. Had one as me on my wedding cake! Had a little top hat and everything.
😊🤗😘😍
Nice idea..It must be looking cute on the cake
How cute.

Can we stop to appreciate that the first Pokemon covered who improved every generation was AZUMARILL? Pretty cool.
"It wasn't so much a revenge killer as a much as a revenge *MURDERER* "

I loved Azumarill when it first came out even though it was horrible competitively. Azumarill is an interesting specimen to observe how Pokemon mechanics have changed over time. The introduction of abilities, the special / physical attack split, how breeding and egg moves worked, and the new Fairy typing all changed the metagame. It's also gotten a lot of Dynamax attention in Gen 8 as well. It warms my heart to see the blue egg get a small boost every gen before eventually becoming the OU beast it is today.
Props for the OG Pokemon fan reference of "Pikablue"
And soon enough, Azumarill is getting High Horsepower, to absolutely destroy poison types
And GF realized that'd would have been too powerful so they backed down on it......
Retro209 Yeah, me too
Yeah if you look at it's stats BST 420 is not that high. They did that on purpose. I'll put more HP on the thing 20 points. Maybe 10 points on Attack and Special Attack.
Retro209 who cares about toxapex
@@eddietheguy13 Toxapex is annoying to deal with, if you don't have the right Mon for the job.
In Gen 8, Azumarill is still an OU staple like in Gen 7, didn't receive much changes though. Maybe that a defensive Sap Sipper set was discovered, with Whirlpool and Perish Song.
Azumarill was the pokemon that got me into competitive pokemon, once I slapped choice band onto it
Besides its Competitive Viability, Azumarill is also very good as a playthrough Pokemon in its Gen games, if you did not pick a Water starter. I love it

Azumarill is actually an amazing sweeper in the Gen 7 metagame. Huge Power + Belly Drum + Aqua Jet = GG, if you don't have a specific counter for him he wrecks like hell.
How good was Altaria ACTUALLY?
I'm genuinely interested in this one. Such a unique Pokemon.
Altaria is awesome
I wish May would’ve caught that Swablu and evolved it into an Altaria in the anime
I really like this video, cause it's good to see a Pokemon from previous generations who have been treated actually well by the new meta. Watching mons who were OU falling right into oblivion makes refreshing the rise of Azurrill as a real menace as the generations passes by.
What a perfectionist lol he re uploaded bc the fairy typing wasn’t in the image when displaying Azumarill for Gen 6 😩
lol im hardly a perfectionist, ive made mistakes in past videos before and I didnt reupload. But this one, I figured I could at least get the typing right lmao
i'd consider it more of a UA-camr that cares about giving us top quality content.
Very cool dude. Attention to detail shows that you care, and is just very awesome in general! Thank you! 👍
I'd say more professionalism than perfectionism. Didn't even know this was a re upload :D
Matt Hinton me too
I'd love to see an analysis of the current metagame in gen-7. I know you've already done something similar to this for gen 1, but a gen by gen breakdown of the competitive metagame would be fascinating to supplement the breakdowns of individual pokemon.
That'd be pretty pointless to do since USUM just came out, so the VGC and Smogon metas will change a lot

Let's keep tryin for that waterdog, Vaporeon.

yes, Magneton please :)
Thank you so much for this video! I have been asking for Azumarill every other video but it would just get buried. So I asked for Pikablu instead, and I imagine that really got the gears turning, haha. Thanks again!
Physical HP Ghost! Illegal Egg Move combinations! These videos make me oddly nostalgic for past-gen metas. It's a great retrospective of just how much has actually changed in Pokémon over the years, despite the battle system being built off the same core used in RBY.
Watching this just reminded me that I raised an Azumarill to lvl 100 on my Sapphire. I loved that pokémon, and totally forgot about him....
I used it as a HM slave... And only realised how strong huge power was when dig and strength were doing more damage than surf and dive.
I also loved hearing its beautiful cry when I used surf and dive in the water, you don't get that in the new games now.
3:38 me spinning when the video uploaded. YAY
Bro why did I comment this back when I was 12
Azu is probably one of the most buffed Pokemon ever

Even with Magic Bounce, it was okay at best. Gen 6 made it completely irrelevant again too.
Azumarill has slowly become a must have water type for me. I first started using it in gen 4 when it started getting good. I haven't stopped since. Even when I've tried using a different water type just to change it up and explore other options, I always end up coming back to Azumarill. I love you, Azumarill!

Azumarill always reminds me of Disfunction. Specifically him versing Marriland and using Aqua Jet with boosts from a baton passing cursing umbreon. Wow. The memories. Priority moves were the best thing in Gen 4 OU bar none.
I can't wait to see feraligatr next
Jack Lehane bad
Jack Lehane all gen 2 starters suck
thachum rigam meganium and typhlosion suck but not feraligatr
Meganium sucked because it was weak to all the gyms and it was a worse Venvesaur. Feraligatr was bad before the Physical/Special split.
Jack Lehane Feraligatr sucks lmao its RU
I'd love to see you do Ninetales. I think it had such an interesting change in viability over the years
I'm glad you stopped calling it Azu Marill, I was dying a little inside every time. Azumarill has grown on me over time, one of my favorites now.
Most mons from the early gens have been getting worse over time due to powercreep (like tauros) but Azumarill pretty much just got better and better as it got more things. Z moves also help it quite a bit in gen 7, though as of now it's fallen down to BL.
How GOOD was Golem ACTUALLY?
Vulpix Videos he did him
Calin Boss Gaming lol i meant golem :)
He has already done Machmap Vulpix videos
Brad Schaefer just dated, really, and even its alolan form doesn't help it with weakness, being quad weak to ground and regular golem being quad weak to water and grass. And water is the most popular type in the game so golem couldn't stand shit these days.
*HOW GOOD WAS GOLEM ACTUALLY*
I would love to see a Wynaut/Wobbuffet video. From the outside, they seem like a surprising character to have been banned!
Paul is rolling in his grave now after he traded Azumarill to that kid.
One of the rare pokemon who has become better and better each gen since it's introduction.
I’m new to your videos. They’re SOOOOO informative. Awesome content! Thanks!
Currently trying to get myself a shiny Azumarill in Sword and Shield :)
I believe that more Pokémon should get similar treatment to Azumarill despite having mediocre stats.
GF needs to give more Pokémon better abilities and moves to become overused.
How about raichu? He doesn’t get any love in the first place so help him out!
Void_theHunter Yeah, he's my favorite by the way.
My favorite Pokémon! nobody loves Raichu more than me!
Joshua The Transit Prodigy Coley Not as much as me.
Azumaril from zero to hero again. Seeing it everywhere now.
I think doing a video on the "Punch Trio" from GEN 1 would be interesting - Electabuzz, Magmar and Jinx
Azumarill was the very first pokemon I had ever seen in my entire life when I was either 3 or 4 I was watching my brother play Emerald when he encountered an Azumarill I was immediately hooked on the game and have been a huge pokemon and Azumarill fan ever since
Hey! Azuril is adorable one of the cutest pokemon.
I had an Azumarill on my original squad in S/V that I caught in an early route. It's still an amazing Pokemon thanks to its great defensive typing and Huge Power. It even wins a lot of Tera Raids for me when paired with Shell Bell.
I'm curious how viable Garchomp is and was even though he's pretty recent. Would you consider doing a mini episode or like a blog post on it?
Azumarill isn't doing very well in Generation 7 due to the introduction of priority immunity and the Tapu can either counter it (Koko, Bulu) or check Azumarill (Lele, Fini). I actually tried using Azumarill in Gen 7 doubles, but it turns out Azumarill isn't good unless Trick Room is up, so I swapped it for Assault Vest Kyurem-Black (yeah, that's a thing).
HeatEdgeSucks In USUM, Azumarill got an even better physical Water type move; Liquidation. With Liquidation instead of Waterfall, Azumarill can actually OHKO even Slowbro and Ferrothorn with it in the rain if given a Choice Band. I know, cause I've done it.

We got the three birds, can we get the three dogs? You've been teasing them and naming how awesome they are. At Least for Suicune and Raiku
Azumarill is definitely one of my favorite mons to use, especially in Gen 7. Unless you play competitive, you aren’t gonna know about it. With its ability Huge Power, it basically has base 100 Attack stat. Which is pretty good, but not fantastic or anything. However, it’s very bulky, & can use Belly drum. In Gen 7, if you use a Normal Z Crystal, you can use Belly drum no matter how low it’s HP is. It brings it’s HP all the way back up, then to half, like if you used it at the beginning of the battle. Then just aqua jet everything to death. I’ve beaten so many teams full of ubers with this cute little blue bunny lol
Huge power doesn't transfer into 100atk, more like 150
尤銓譽 I’m genuinely confused, how does it go up to 150? It’s regular attack is 50, so I thought Huge Power doubled it to 100? This is a serious question, I’m not being sarcastic or anything lol
@@toxicperson8936 let me show you the calc. 50 base atk will transfer into 218 atk at lv100, 31iv, 252 ev, and plus attack nature(adamant, lonely etc.) After huge power, it's whooping 436atk. A Zekrom (150 base atk) with same iv ev and nature will have 438 atk. In comparison, a Mew (100base atk) with same condition only have 328atk. Hope that I helped.
'base stats' are just a comparison number with other mons, not the actual stats.
it doubles the actual attack stat. so 200atk would be 400atk and so on.
@@toxicperson8936 Azumarill's base attack stat is 50. If you breed an Azumarill with max IVs in Attack, train it to 252 EVs in attack, and give it an adamant nature, those boosts are added to its attack stat. Huge Power then doubles its attack at the end, not at the beginning before the IV / EV / nature boosts. It doesn't only double its base attack but also doubles the effect of any attack boosts it gets. If you want a comparison in math, it's (50 + 25) x 2 = 150, not 50 x 2 + 25 = 125. Though obviously the actual calculations are more complex than that. That's why Azumarill hits as hard as most legendary Pokemon. And yes, huge power doubles the effect of belly drum too. Belly Drum gives a pokemon x3 in attack while Azumarill gets x6 in attack from it.
How good was the original uber. One of the most powerful Pokemon ever, able to take advantage of its huge movepool and psychic typing since the days of RBY. The one that everyone shudders in fear of! The great, the legendary... MEW!
Just Mew.
Finally, the Pokémon I only just discovered I like
do the first uber, mewtwo
Mr Infinity he already did gengar and kangaskan (both megas are UBER in gen 6)
Mr Bilter ok, and? i said the first uber which is mewtwo.
Mr Bilter Those weren't the first Ubers, dude.
When did he ever do Kangaskhan?
He did mega Gengar and mega kankasnkan which is Uber. Mewtwo is not the first.
I think Azumarill should be in talks for a how great was video
Its Springtime and right around Easter, is in every single competitive Gen so you know it could be long and is still standing strong despite the waves of Powercreep getters stronger (heck hasn't even fallen below UU despite its not amazing stats)
How GOOD was Umbreon ACTUALLY?
I'm so stoked for this thing to re enter vgc 2020 with the isle of armor dlc
i think this needs a remake🤔
I actually prefer using sap sipper azumarill on my rain team instead of huge power one because nobody expects it and they would hit azumarill with leaf storm(if serperior) or with power whip(if ferrothorn) and after that my azumarill would basically become a super Saiyan.
how GOOD was aggron ACTUALLY? Pretty please with bonusweet on top.
Im happy my boy azumarill was buffed over time.

Unaware quagsire:not if i have something to say about it
How GOOD was Delibird ACTUALLY?

Awful... always.
By that logic you could nearly say that about all pokemon. However, in the general game and battling delibird is quite terrible.
awfull stats, worse mono type in the game and the movepool is a gimmick itself
Interesting but not very good. It's a Christmas themed Pokemon and not much else.
As someone who played a fair bit of gen 6 DOU, I just want to leave this note here in the comments: Jirachi plus Azu was the scariest core. While Azu wasn't the broken asset (Rachi was), once that follow me and belly drum combo went off, it wasn't unheard of for teams to just auto lose. While there was counterplay in Zard Y and Lando T leads, the other four pokemon on the Azu team could be assigned to dealing with the checks and on teams that used a different mega mon than Zard Y, Azu Rachi could lead and reek havoc with belly drum boosted aqua jets. I think that format, more than any others, really showed how scary Azu could be.
How about Machamp? He's been pretty good throughout a few generations.
Aqua ring + leftovers azumaril is awesome
ive swept with it on showdown a few times before
How good is sneasal/weville
Belly drum azumarill was a cornerstone of my X and Y competitive team. Love it
I have limited knowledge of competitive pokemon, but I have seen Weezing being in quite a few videos, either as a check or an outright counter, so I would like to see Weezing please!(P.S: Also How good was Umbreon actually?)
In X and Y this thing was fantastic for the Maison. I hadn't played since Gen 2 and didn't know about half of its moves.
I ran it with Belly Drum, Aqua jet, Play Rough and Superpower(?), then gave it the Splash Plate.
Was a complete beast and held up alright when fighting randoms on the train, would obviously fall flat against people who knew about competent switching and team comps.

Donphan has had some times where it has been one of the best spinners and times where it has felt underpowered. It is indeed an interesting pokemon in the meta. Not too powerful but still a solid spinner and hazard setter through the years...
Hey man nice video as always, but 1 correction. You said huge power got its attack stat to 100?? No it much better than that. From my calculations it should be 152 or something. It doubles the regular stats of the pokémon. I did this cal if it was lvl 100
