Hey Rich, there's an old draftsman's trick you can use on your inking triangle. Use some masking tape and stick three dimes to the bottom of it -- one in the middle of each leg. It raises the ruler just a little bit extra which makes picking it up easier and you never have to worry about ink building up underneath it.
OMG I feel you Richard when you say how much you hate to have to lay down any white out. Luckily I am not paid to ink yet but it kills me so much when I lay down white out that I have even been known to just reprint the piece and do it all over again. I know I have to stop that if I want to do this for a living but I hate. mistakes and white! LOL but that why I agree with you on warming up. Somethimes I warm up for 10 mins but if I still don't feel right I will go longer, but enough rambling Great video and I love your work!!!!!!
the "little anomalies", as you put it at 3:32, i think enhance the piece and add something overall. Not something you can always put your finger on exactly, but it still adds some kind of quality that i think is a plus. LOVE your work btw!
yeah I agree...it's really one of the flaws with digital inks...they always look too clean...no matter how many splatter and airbrush techniques you try and put over it to blend it in. Also the application of digital "ink" goes down far too smooth and that is something ink and paper does naturally...and that creates breathing space that maybe can't even be seen but is there. I actually believe that. it can't be replicated (at least yet) even with digitally textured canvas.
Hey rich I just wanted to say Im an artist and I’ve been watching you for a few years and you have really opened my eyes to a lot of stuff that has changed my path as an artist and I just want thank you you’re a LOT more valuable than you may think don’t stop and don’t quit trying to break in beyond inking
Was wondering how you did these after seeing your instagram post. Never occurred to me that you can use a straight edge for this. Thought you did them free hand lol. I think it would be pretty cool to adapt this technique to get a beam of light effect, in addition to using them as straight up speed lines. Gonna have to find some time to play around with it.
Great video, thanks for sharing :- Sorry if this is a stupid question, but just wondered what the bulky pen holder is which you are pressing against ? It's just that I've seen a lot of comic book inkers using these and wondered if they make much of a difference to the strokes ?
Rich, Scott Williams seems to have moved away from nibs and brushes to microns and brush pens. How do you feel about using them and do you think they provide a different aesthetic that comics are trending towards?
yeah you know. I've inked with microns a ton actually...I like them but they can be a little soft. I rock the .005, .01, and then the .08...there's even a .003. But I think the quality of the brush pens is so high now...it's not like he's buying a crappy brush pen from 15 years ago...he probably buys the top of the line brush pen and throw in...he's Scott Williams...he's good to go...those Japanese pens and brushes can be so great.
some KILLER inspiration too. Kim Jung Gi on Proko being interviewed on HOW TO BECOME A MASTER. enjoy! (watching it myself right now for the first time) ua-cam.com/video/aoqu5SEFqRI/v-deo.html
Great video, Rich. Very helpful! Have you ever messed around with one of those "rolling ruler" things to ink with? Curious if that's easier or not keeping those speed lines parallel, probably with your experience inking it doesn't make much difference? Also in the comments Scott Williams was brought up as using top of the line brush pens, is there something(s) you might recommend that are worth experimenting with? There are way too many options out there and it's hard to judge what may be good or not without being able to hold it in your hands and check it out first. Any thoughts? I hope Santa brings you a new inking triangle for Christmas, that one looks like it's about time to retire to the big triangle field in the sky, haha. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year!
No I know what you are talking about. I think I have one somewhere...but I am decent with just sliding a ruler around and keeping it in perspective or parallel. I only have the sakura brush pen...nearly sure I recently posted photos of the one I use on instagram. Check there...you'll see it. thanks!
This probably is way too late to be helpful, buuuuuut just in case, the zooming issue on your phone could have to do with the resolution setting. Often if you change from 1080p to 4k the image will crop in. I’ve experienced that on both my cameras and drone.
@@timswift2021 oh yeah. I think any decent tape would....it's just to snug in the nib if the plastic has gotten loose from wear and replacing nibs...honestly those brown pen holders and like $1...so it's not a big deal to buy a few...but I almost never switch them out....unless I lose them./ which doesn't really happen. I bought 20 maybe 15 years back. I am not sure I've even used 3 of them during that time. I have a few "fancy" holders like metal and whatnot...they always feel too heavy. I like the small size and light weight of those cheap plastic ones.
Nothing like watching a Master at work.....quite inspiring.
thank you!!

This is exactly what I needed. Group mind reading is happening here :) Also, congratulations on Marvel Knights!!!

Also in the Battle Angel Alita comics, he uses lots of speed lines to gesture Alita's speed in battle.
Man those are beautiful panels!
Thanks man.!
@@RichardFriendartist You're welcome man.

oh yeah...the beam of light effect is 100% cool with speed lines! try it out.

I'm interested to see that new inking style you're working on, are you using it on your own IP?
24:20 lol he always does this. He goes off tracks and talks about his camera and googling stuff .
is the nib trash if the wings spread on it when you push down?
Is there a video yet where you talked about apps for digital works?
Thank u so much
I haven't been able to find a beveled triangle like that anywhere.
Rich the pretty teacher 😁
if it's not pretty...it's shitty. hahaha. I'll throw that on a shirt and watch instagram sellers rip it off. ;)
@@RichardFriendartist, ripping off bastds, keep the great work up dude 😁
