Look at us now in the Coronavirus outbreak, expected to keep schools open for the children of key workers despite the risk to our own health... Happy to do it but feeling disheartened at the lack of support from the Department for Education. Myself and so many colleagues were forced to self isolate so late because family members were still working and travelling. This governments response to the outbreak has been abysmal.

Having a bad teacher is still better than no teacher at all.

I trained as a teacher in the UK. I'm actually a qualified computer teacher but I found my year training way too stressful and the IT sector pays a lot better. In a year I only had two weeks of holiday where I didn't have any work to do. A lot of other teachers seemed to be thinking about leaving the profession or move to schools abroad. You can get teaching placements pretty easy in places like the UAE which pay a lot more and you have the added bonus of not having to pay tax.

I have a masters so there is an additional 1,000 increase for that. For every year of experience you get an annual increase. In the USA virtually every school district pays for health insurance for their employees. While it varies by district, in general, American school districts tend to provide above average health insurance benefits for their employees relative to the insurance plans most private employers offer for people in a similar pay range.
Also worth noting that school districts are some of the last employers in the country that still provide true pensions for their employees rather than 401(k) savings plans, though many states are starting to scale back how generous those pensions are.

  • @mimii694

There have been multiple occasions where teachers have dipped into their own pockets at my school (UK). Last week English teacher bought Romeo and Juliet for us because we had a cover lesson in the maths block and he couldn't play the film as there were no DVD players in maths so he used Amazon instead. Furthermore, apparently, a lot of departments have to fundraise as they do not get enough of a budget from the school so the teachers actually pay their own money towards being able to teach the students with quality supplies. I respect my teachers and couldn't thank them more for putting in all the hours and effort they do towards us, and we should be grateful, wherever in the world you are. Don't just take the mick out of your teachers when you don't know what they go through to look after you and ensure your future!

I've taught primary education in both the US and UK. This video missed almost everything that is comparable and different.
Some of the biggest differences I noticed were the longer English schhol year and the type and use of curriculum materials.
In the UK we were given National Curriculum skills and concepts as guides (just policy documents) for what to cover with students across 11 subject areas.
In the US we had a school book for most curriculum areas. For instance the school district would expect all teachers to teach from one main history book and the students would work from a complementary workbook. The same for science, math, geography, etc.
In the UK a teacher would be given 1 ream of paper per term for copies. Giving worksheets to students was not considered appropriate teaching. In the US most student work was done with worksheets.
In the UK teachers had to create their own resources and develop their own lessons and activities. Schools traditionally did not teach to scheme books which meant teacher workload in the UK was much higher.
As far as pay goes, in the US it varies greatly. In wealthy states and with incentives for further education, teachers can make over $70,000/year. Equivalent schools in the UK make £40,000 with a larger workload and a much longer school year.

Great video, infact my sister in law is an American teacher who is now teaching in the UK.
I will send her the link. But going off what she said in the past its very much the same, The big difference seems to be in the attitude of parents. In America she found there was alot more stress around the parents coming to the school and kicking off about this or that, while in general in the UK the parents are alot more relaxed and hands off!.

      Plump:
It was never an honor system. We've had armed police in schools since Columbine. That's not a problem because those people are trained professionals. As for "mentality" arguments: What do you call a shooter without a gun? Something else. What do you call a mentally unstable person without a gun? Not a shooter. Oh, and can you tell me ONE bill or law to expand access to mental healthcare that the republicans have proposed after ANY of these shootings? Just one? No? Then go fuck yourself with your precious precious gun.

    • @RyuSensei42
      @RyuSensei42 6 років тому

      Plump:
I can vote for candidates that support gun control. I can continue to speak up against ammosexuals. I can continue to donate to candidates and organizations that are pro human/anti gun. And, of course, I can continue to promote and educate on the benefits of a gun free society.
As for armed staff, they're obviously a good idea as a last line of defense. Unfortunately, there is currently no first, second, or third line of defense. Which means gun control laws, mandatory training, national registry, banning private sales, harsher punishments, and comprehensive background checks to prevent the armed police staff from needing to be used.
I'm not scared of a gun in the hands of a trained professional. I grew up in the military surrounded by the best trained gunmen and women in the world. A gun in the hands of an untrained idiot or someone not in full control of their faculties scares the living hell out of everyone with two brain cells to rub together and there ought to be a law.
You dare to say I don't care about kids? Coming from someone who wants to do nothing to protect them or any of the thousands of adults who get shot in America every year, that means exactly dick.
Oh, and you didn't answer my question. One bill or law to expand access to mental health care? One? Anything? No? Then take your gun, and use it to go fuck yourself. Preferably while loaded.

I’m an ESL teacher from Canada. I’ve been living abroad for a few years but I’ll be returning to Canada soon to get my Bachelor of Education (2 years, not 4.) English and American teaching salaries are SOOOOO low. In my home province, the minimum salary for a new elementary school teacher is around $44,000 before tax. After 10 years it’s about $86,000 before tax. In Ontario, Alberta, and Nova Scotia, salaries are close to $100,000 before tax after 10 years.

The issue with the crisis in the uk is that the shortage in staff means bigger classes which means the teachers can’t control the children and that puts off many new teachers. I have a friend who studied to be a teacher but ended up being placed in the ruffest school around with kids throwing chairs and weapons at her. The thing is it’s a cycle that is going to continue until kids can be controlled in big numbers (which isn’t going to happen) I am a student who has just got out of school and I can say that most of my teachers were so fed up they didn’t even teach well.

$46000 in pounds is about £36400 so technically British teachers get paid more

Amelia Gaffney no, they converted it before comparing. So us teachers “technically” get paid more.

Here in the UK, the lack of teachers has really taken a toll on my school. My textiles teacher has to teach not only her specific subject, but food tech and geography too. The students don’t help the situation either. We are all little savages. 🤷‍♀️

In secondary school in the England, there are minimum 800 kids in one year/Grade. That school is very strict and have expelled at least 200 students right now.

There is no shortage of people qualified to become teachers. The only shortage that exists are people who are willing to work under an educational system that values an arbitrary scores on a standardized tests over respecting individual needs. The argument is bunk. It's about working conditions, respect, and funding levels.

Scotland has it's own parliament and a different education system, please rename this to "US teachers vs English teachers", a lot of English and Scottish things are the same but education is really different.

Crazy - where i'm at (Alberta, Canada), teachers start at about 60k CND and top out at about 100k after 10 years. (47 to 78k USD). Plus union job security and defined benefits.... No wonder we have far more teaching grads than available positions.
