For example, there might be a question like "what's the capitol of Iran" or "what's the largest land animal on Earth". There's no reasoning or problem solving skill required, either you know the answer to these questions or not.

yeah. most americans dont even speak a second language. here in europe it is common to know at least one other language (except the british.... they only speak english)

@@Arzeena1990Europeans seem really bad at understanding that it’s the European environment of living on a small “continent” the size of the entire United States that but speaks like 25 distinct languages is the reason why Europeans have a need and incentive to learn second languages. Here in the US we literally can’t afford the 3 thousand dollar round trip plane ticket it would cost to get to Europe once, much less enough times to learn the language. Like you remember that the us is mostly full of Europeans? We’re all the same just living in different places

@@monhi64 Haha as if they don't speak Spanish or French in your neighbouring countries. And we do learn second and third languages because we constantly take part in other cultures in various formats, such as television, literature, music etc. I think that even in that sense, the US is very US-centric. You rarely learn a language just because you are going to that specific country for travel, it's a lot more than that so I think that the argument about the cost of plane tickets falls kind of short. There is less of a tendency in the US to care for other cultures and that's pretty much a fact if you look at what is taught in school

@@slake9727 yes the berlin wall came down in 1989, but many republics of the USSR declared independence before 1991 and from the years 1989-1991 there was never any fighting or even spying, it was just a slow collapse of a union. nothing is a fact, and there are always ways to prove a fact is not true. in my opinion, the war ended in 1989. although the sources always say 1991, there was no formal end to the cold war, neither was there a formal beginning.

I find it amazing that two contestants on one team competed in a language that's not their mother tongue and still managed to get their team to win. It would be fairer if everyone would speak his mother tongue here. Like the German girl didn't know the term "cold war" in English. It's impossible she wouldn't have known the answer if asked in German, I know this is taught at school there.
I agree with your comment, it's impressive to answer these question in a foreign language. However, in the case of "Cold War", it really wasn't a big issue. "Cold War" literally means "Kalter Krieg", it doesn't have a weird extraordinary translation or anything. I knew the translation, but I wouldn't have guessed 1989 either :D In German schools, our history lessons are almost exclusively about WW2, lol. At first we learn about Ancient Greeks and Romans, then about the Medieval Age, and then it's all just WW2. Year after year again and again WW2. I do remember hearing "Kalter Krieg", but we only talked about it very briefly. And by that time most students didn't even pay attention anymore, because we were all exhausted by all this WW2 stuff...

I'm German and at school we dedicated half year to the time after 1945, of course talking much about the cold war and about how it ended. That was in 1996 in Bavaria.
But I remember when I moved to Italy and I heard the term "guerra fredda" for the first time, I didn't realize they were talking about the cold war. I first thought about some war in Russia or Canada or Iceland 🤪 When they explained, it seemed obvious as also in Italian it's the literal translation. But if you have a good level in a foreign language you don't do translate, you just think in that language.
I switch between four languages nearly every day and sometimes I just get stuck with things like those. Like my brain comes up with the right term in all languages, except the one I'm actually using in that moment. So annoying, but I know it happens to many people that switch languages daily.
I was really impressed especially by the Italian girl about how quickly she could think in English.

Back then it was of course much fresher and the teachers had personal experiences and memories from that war. Nowadays it's simply not that relevant anymore, especially to younger people in West Germany.

@@helgaioannidis9365 I was born in a reunified Germany, so all this talk about Ossis and Wessis always sounded completely alien to me :D I never understood why our media is so obsessed with this whole topic every year. Many young Germans feel that way. For us it's just Germany; our brains usually don't divide between East and West. I know 1990 isn't that long ago, but for us it might as well have been 1910, that's how distant it is for us.
Also, just for the record: If the question had been "When did the Berlin Wall fall?", I would have immediately known the answer (1989). Or if the question had been "When was the German reunification?", I would have immediately known it as well (1990). We learned about reunification and all. I just didn't make the connection to the Cold War. We talked a lot about the reunification and what happened after it; not so much about what happened before it.

Problem with US education is that it is extremely US centric, both for geography and history so generally they study absolutely nothing about the rest of the world with the exception when US is somehow involved. Also US education is more aimed at passing a final test than actually knowing things. So yes generally Americans ARE more ignorant, and I say generally which doesn't mean every American at all, who wants to actually learn always do even if many things aren't taught at school. If this test was all about geography there's the chance results would have been 10-0. Funny how they later said it was about time and they knew them all, no they totally didn't, just as an example they freaking said Madagascar is the smallest country in the world while it's actually huge, clearly they have no idea how Madagascar looks like and probably they know the name of it just because of the animation movies...

I would argue that the biggest problem with the US education system is that it isn't nationally standardized-- The states each follow their own curriculum. What is taught in one state and how thoroughly could be vastly different from what is taught in another. For me, I attended school in Texas. From 4th to 8th grade, social studies cycled through Texas history (4th), then US history (5th), Geography/World Cultures (6th), Texas history (7th), and US history (8th). In high school, you are required to take Geography, World History, U.S. history, and Economics and U.S. Government (two separate classes, each one semester rather than a year) in no particular order. My school also offered European history as an elective. Suffice to say, I learned a fair amount about Texas, the US, and international history-- although "World History" is mostly concerned with Europe and Asia, so there's that... As for Madagascar... size is relative. You say it's huge, but Texas is even bigger, so I beg to differ. As for only knowing the name of it because of the animated movies, well, that's possible. But before the Madagascar movies, there was an educational children's show called Zoboomafoo, which starred a Coquerel's sifaka. Those of us who grew up watching that show at least knew of Madagascar before the animated films.
They should have done written answers like a test.
In a situation like this people are bound to get it wrong because they're rushing to be right FIRST rather than just taking their time and actually being right.

For real!😃 I am from Romania therefore a Balkan country that had suffred very much because of comunism regime and nasty soviet influence. Therefore not knowing any details about Cold War is not acceptable for any avarage Romanian. To be brutally honest the avarage Romanian that doesn't know about this would be considered very dumb buy other fallow Romanians.
For us this is generally know because our grandparents and parents lived that part of history and talked with us about thouse times. I mean I was born a month before the national revolution came in Romania in December 1989. My very birth represents the first new generation after comunism I would be a laughingstock for my own people if I didn't know about the recent history of my country.😀

@@leliavoinea9402 As an American with a roommate in college who was TERRIBLE with dates I can tell you that saying the Cold War ended in 1920 will also get you teased mercilessly here too. Given if Americans only know one thing about the Cold War they know it was a nuclear staring contest, so naming a date before WWII and the invention of Nuclear Weapons is just... (Too be fair to those like my old roommate though, they were just incredibly bad with time. If given a series of historical events - wars, inventions, etc - they could put them in the correct order. But ask if the car was invented in 1886 or 1668 and there was only a 50% chance they'd get it right)

I remember in the Davinci Code, the main protagonist tells his publisher that the best selling book of all times talk about the secret. The publisher is astonished and says he can't believe even Harry Potter tells the story about this secret, he is then reminded that the best selling book of all time is the Bible.
I knew from then that the Bible is the best selling book of all time, but then again, Davinci Code came out 2003, and Harry Potter still had two more books to hit the charts.
I find the problem to be that people study for a test and never look at it again or apply it for better understanding. And with all of the recent bans on teaching certain parts of history, this will just get worse. I miss the education I had growing up (born in 94). It is NOT the same as what my sister learned (born in 01). Also, its important to note that the curriculum in the U.S is not the same from state to state. Some states schools require 2 years of foreign language for example while some schools make it optional. Also, some schools in the U.S only require you to get a D to pass and graduate which just 🤯
Unless you are very interested - as some are always are everywhere in the world - everybody studies for the test. That is not particular for America. I am a high school teacher in Denmark, so I know this. But studying for the test does not mean that some of the obtained knowledge does not stick.

Europeans know the context off by heart and can explain it to the students without consulting the syllabus.

I assure you most people know they speak Spanish in Argentina lol. Even the dumbest people I've met know they speak spanish everyone down there and speak portugese in Brazil. If you want to be technical in South America there is also Suriname and Guyana that speak Dutch and English respectively while French Guiana is technically not a country and is the only colony still in mainland South America. Similarly I have no clue how they didn't get the largest country one right most people get that without even thinking. American geography is mainly lacking in Africa and Asia as we are required to know about every country in North and South America and most of Europe. Even with lacking geographical knowledge though I don't get how someone would guess Madagascar as the Vatican City being the smallest is a generally well known thing due to the fact the pope gets his own country
I went to school in Germany and I was taught about the cold war for almost 2-3 years! I think it's quiet shocking that they thought it was something that happened far before the second world war. It means they had no clue what the cold war was about. It's okay, if you don't know if the official ending is 1989 or 1990. But something that is still influencing the world of today, should be common knowledge to everyone!

The Cold War ended in 1991 with the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the formation of the Russian Federation and other states in its place. The Berlin Wall had just fallen in 1989 and Germany reunified a year later.

Technically the cold war questions is a trick question. The cold war didn't actually have a real end, since it wasn't actually a real war, but the collapse of the USSR eased tensions. I guess you can say that ended the war if you really wanted to. It's just like how North Korea and South Korea are still at war but currently in an armistice.

I'm sorry, but there is no concept of "national animal" in Spain, there is no official document where one is designated as such. Although it's true that for "cultural" reasons (of which I'm personally not proud) the bull could be identified as such, emblematically we could say that the national one it's the lion, since it appears on the spanish flag as well as in other regional flags of the country. Therefore, "Lion" would have been a more correct answer, although the ideal answer would have been "they don't have one". Some would also say that it's the "Iberian lynx" since it's endemic of the country.
Spain has no _official_ national animal, but the Osborne Bull is widely used, say by sports fans (except in Catalonia).
I am very proud of the 3 unofficial national animals of Spain: the Bull, the Lion and St John´s Eagle, the emblem of the Catholic Monarchs.

They didn't ask when the Berlin Wall fell though. I can *guarantee* you that Jessica wouldn't have said 1930 then. Because I'm the same. I had no idea that the Cold War is related to the fall of the wall... But I can very well tell you when the wall fell and when Germany was reunited. Those are different questions.

Im confused ...the cold war was mostly between USA and Soviet Union. Germany had little to do with it since they lost Significantly after WW2. Cold war "ended" in late 1960s..well past the end of ww2. Then it picked back up again a few years later and ended "officially" in 1991. Thats far too recent and also has almost nothing to do with germany by that point. A lithuanian would be more familiar with it than a german

When I came to the US to study at a Junior College, the text we used in a chemistry class was the same one (in Spanish, of course) I had used in High School in Mexico.

But maby it has changed. I heard that in recent years Italians put a lot of efford into the educational sistem. So i hope that new generation will have a better education than their parents.
@@refe6430 that’s very general and not entirely true, there are plenty of younger people who speak English well (I can be proof of that). Plus, people tend to forget that that people who already speak a Germanic language have an advantage with English. That’s why Germans, Scandinavians etc are better at English than others, because their languages are all Germanic and more similar to English, while Italian, Spanish etc. are all Romance languages. I can tell you that Italians speak way better Spanish than English speakers, does that not count? I’ve honestly never met an Italian that doesn’t know at least what countries they border. But what makes the system good to me is their focus on history and literature, which many forget how important they actually are

Honestly, they didn‘t teach about Cold War in my school and in Germany in general it’s the last topic we would talk (sequence-wise) about in history class but the schedule is so tight, you often don’t even get there. Like, in 8th / 9th grade you have French Revolution and industrialisation, then in 10th grade again, then 11th and 12th grade you go through some topics I don’t exactly remember, French Revolution, German Revolution, Industrialisation (again x.x) then WW 1, the 20s, Rise of the Nazis and WW 2 and then you’d theoretically talk about Cold War but as I said, we usually don’t manage to get there because it was too much content to get through in just 1 1/2 years (half of 12th grade is just preparation for graduation exams)

First I thought the American stupidity is a stereotype joke until my best friend goes to school in the US for a year and after he came back he said “the American School system let them structurally be stupid, the math they did in 11th class was the same as our 8th class“

Not a big fan of the format for this quiz battle. Buzzer beater battles are fun for entertainment, but not for testing knowledge. Letting everyone be given equal time to answer questions and compare their answers, like in an answer reveal with little white boards, would've been much better. Make the team sizes equal and add up the scores from each team for the winner.

I did 9 grades in US public school. Middle of my 2nd grade they made me take the IQ test. I placed inside the 98 percentile. As a result, they bumped me up to the 3rd grade and put me into the gifted program. In 2004, for the 10th grade I went to a regular Russian public school. I felt dumb af. I was embarrassed at how little I knew. I needed 4 tutors to help me catch up to their level in math, biology, chemistry, and physics. Not to say I wasn’t behind in other subjects, just no tutor was hired to help.
I’ve never looked the same at americans ever since.
I had a similar experience in high school when a new Moroccan student who was trilingual (Arabic, French, English) joined my school. They literally printed my class schedule and gave it to him, so I had a direct comparison. I just felt overwhelmed by his impressive skills in the advanced math/physics/Spanish classes and made me realize how behind I was in the US education system. He also thought I was a clueless American who didn't anything about the outside world, but I was never exposed to many international topics at the time besides some cultural topics in Spanish class.
No surprise that he got a full-ride scholarship to Cornell, while I only got into my top state public university (not upset, but disappointed in US education system leaving me "behind")

Rough conversion for distance is pretty simple. 1 mile is 1.6 kilometers. 1 kilometer is .62 miles. For temperature, you must use the formulas.
Well obviously I think the American girls were still in advantage because English is their language and sometimes it takes more time to a foreigner to answer especially things u learned years ago at school . While there, I was trying to explain that 'infamous' doesn't mean not famous, but someone known for something bad, and used Hitler as an example and got crickets (this was with 14-16 year olds in Hanoi). I switched to 'Pol Pot', and everyone was like, 'oh, yeah! That guy!' Let's go try that in the West and see how many people know who Pol Pot is. And one of my smartest students was 16 and in an advanced history class, and she had just learned about the Holocaust and asked me why Hitler hated Jews. I said I wish I knew, but she had just learned about it at 16. But y'all have your own history, most people here don't know anything about, say, the Chinese occupation of Vietnam, or the Nguyen dynasty. Europeans are so arrogant, though, they act like are so much better than us, I'd rather go to Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, etc over Europe any day! Food is way better, too.

As usual the places we “liberated” made better on our inventions, which is what inevitably happens in the progress of democratic institutions.
Though I will say “statistics” and “tests” do lie, very often actually. Especially when you have never looked at their sampling method, or the featured requirements and how they compare to home nations or the intent of design. Often the US places a greater priority on extracurriculars than many other places which is one of many factors that aren’t tested for example.

My experience having studied in both the US and Europe is that the US education system tends to focus on specialized subjects, whereas in Europe it seems to be more general knowledge. Again, that's just my experience...and that was decades ago.
I used to go to a Singaporean public school when I lived there, was a top student, then moved to Japan and went to a Japanese school for 2 years whilst not expanding on my English skills (besides reading.) When I transferred to an American International School, I caught up quite easily, and it’s supposed to be on a higher level than normal American public schools.

The year 1989 can also be attributed the name "Revolution in Eastern Europe". it was a series of revolutions that ended the rule of the CCCP in Europe.
It depends upon how you see it. In 1989 the Soviet Union did stop opposing the west which was why the fall of the Berlin wall became possible. After that the negotiations about the reunification of Germany started - unthinkable under the conditions of a cold war.
You may see it from the point of the "winners" of the cold war and therefore with the destruction of the Soviet Union. But I think this is a false and also a dangerous interpretation of history, which brought us to where we are now.
Yea, I'm American (And southern so double idiot stereotype) yet I knew all these questions. I doubt other kids in my class would have known the answers though because I actually like to learn and learn outside of class on all sorts of subjects, mostly history and English but some science and math.

The thing about the US educational system, is you can't just take a person at random and think that their education even remotely compares with someone in another state, city, or even just a few blocks away. A lot of schools have decent education and do teach about more than just the US, but there are also a lot of schools that are severely lacking or underfunded. I think that's really where the stereotype comes from. The people who are stuck in those schools, either the ones that are so America-centric that people come out knowing almost nothing about the world outside the US besides thinking that America is the best, or the schools that are so neglected by the system that they're incapable of successfully passing a real education onto anyone in the first place.
That is so true. Personally my school is one that teaches tons about the rest of the world, but I also know of schools that don't do that.
well, you can say that on average in the US, there are far fewer schools that teach about the outside world, far fewer people who do any sort of overseas travel, and virtually no one without a special personal compelling reason who learn a foreign language well enough to have even a simple sensible conversation. Seriously, I lived two years in Texas and dit not meet a single non-hispanic white person with conversational Spanish skills.
Sure, the US has an extreme variation and the upper elite of American schools and Universities are world leaders in just about any field - just as the lower 10% is not merely rock bottom, but somewhere well below that level. However, the Average American school really does a poor job on teaching about the outside world, and especially the second language teaching is almost universally appallingly bad.

Sure, everyone I knew was required to take at least 2 years of foreign language to graduate from highschool, but to your point most just did the bare minimum to pass and forgot most of it within a few years of graduating.
Then I started traveling and in trying to discover just how far behind I was from other native English speakers I discovered... that they knew just as much foreign language as my friends back home. Didn't seem to matter if I was in Australia, United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand; even Canada so long as I was on the West Coast (which shocked me given the QB is a thing). That's when I realized it wasn't an American thing but an entitled English native thing, 'If "everyone" else learns English anyways why should I bother to learn a foreign language?'
So now I'm just mildly bothered because I love languages and think others should too :P And I know we're not alone now which helps too lol

The reason so many other people learn languages is because they learn English out of necesity. Don't get me wrong, in some countries, it's normal to know 2, 3, even 4 other languages. But the general rule is people learn what they're going to use. Full stop. And in the US, most people just won't learn other languages. Hell, Italians are strange in my experience, because they either don't learn another language other than what they were raised with (most of them don't), or they know more than 4. Every time. I think it's appropriate to point out that a person can be intelligent in many different ways. Knowledge of history is not the only measure of a person's intellect, neither is any area of study. A brilliant mathematician can be awful with geography, for instance. It's like asking a sports fan what a purl stitch in knitting is, and asking a knitter what a slant in American football is. To say that someone is stupid because they can't answer otherwise inconsequential questions about any given topic is itself quite stupid.
"Americans" are all people who live in the American continent, not just in the United States.

If they mean people from Colombia, they would say Colombians. For an Argentinian, they would say Argentinian. Speaking of someone from Canada, they would say Canadian. Across the world, when a person says anything like, "It's widely thought that most Americans..." or, "Our city welcomes many American tourists each year," it's largely understood that they're talking about people from the United States.
P.S. No, I don't think that's a problem, nor do I think it's because Americans are self-centered, as if theirs is the only country that exists on the whole double-continent landmass. I think it has to do with the fact that it's the simplest and most succinct way to refer to someone of U.S.A. citizenship. United Statesman, U.S.A.-er, etc. just don't seem to work so well. I also believe it likely comes from the "America" part of U.S.A., and is not a reference to the continent at all.

@@andytc4840 I wouldn't have known it. I have absolutely zero interest in history. I'm sure I studied the Cold War in school. I'm sure I took tests on it. I got good grades in history, but I hated the subject, so I didn't retain much of what I studied.
When it comes to the subjects I actually enjoyed, like English and science, I have retained more of that knowledge. Does it make me stupid if I'm not able to recall dates for historical events? No. I could lick most people in a spelling bee, and I'd likely do better than many in the science category of a trivia game.
Also, questions concerning specific dates are not necessarily "basic". Some people are simply bad at dates, and can't even remember their own family members' birthdays. That doesn't make them stupid.
About Cold War you can say it ended from 1989 till 1992 both are correct atleast a bit
I would have said the Cold War ended in 1991 and the smallest country is Liechtenstein. Turns out Liechtenstein isnt the smallest, Vatican City is (I always thought it was a Territory or something). Monaco is second.
i’m italian. We study 6 hours at school, with 2 breaks of 5 minutes. Then we go home and study another 8 hours for the next day's tests (there are tons of them).
I hear a lot of american people saying “i don’t know what to do after school”, i wish i could say that XD
I wish I could get a proper education like you. I live in New Zealand and I’ve basically never had homework. 6 hours of school (4.5 hours of those actually in the classroom) then I go home and do nothing till the next day. They don’t teach anything here. With the New Zealand education system I never had a chance to go to a top university because once you get to average level, they stop teaching you and you just have to wait until new average level work comes in. They don’t allow kids to go beyond average here.
But America has longer school hours…
@@rachelcookie321 they shouldn't do that. They should help you improve as much as you can , I'm from india currently in 12th grade. Biology is my major. Here i think education system is a bit different.

It makes me really sad because I feel like I could of been way further ahead if they had actually let me but now I have no chance of going to a top university. I would of studied more in my free time if I knew I needed to but I thought because I was ahead at school that would be enough but I guess not.

@@xlenaqz It depends on country and it's educational system tho. We had to learn about every continent's history and not just quickly run through, but really get in to it. But later on we focused mainly still on Europe and our country.
