Unsung heroes, modest, gentle, wise. They resurrected the Roach on the Avon and have preserved it for generations to come. Evocative of my youth, calm in a mad world. Thanks.
This video goes straight into my, cinematic angling playlist. I instantly felt connected to the fisherman , his story and his place. Well done Drennan. I want more......;)
Not fortunate enough to have access to a river approaching the quality of the southern ones, although round here the Irwell and Ribble are in easy reach. My favourite however are the tributaries of the Irwell that come through Bolton , Lancashire. At times they dont look much, indeed as recently as the 80s the rivers authority declared them ' dead' due to industry. The last 35 years have seen some superb efforts and i have several Roach, always my favourite...of a pound or more from them. On the face of it this may not seem like much, but for me it confirms an almost unbelievable transformation of the rivers and their environment, and the feeling of catching quality fish from these waters cannot be surpassed. One day i will treat myself to a spell down south on one of the classic Roach waters. Superb video, top man, beautifully made.
I remember a wonderful catch of roach made half a mile upstream of Bicton when I was a young teenager some fifty years ago. So glad you have restored the river to its past fishing glories. A huge well done to Trev and Budgie.
Please @DrennanInternational never stop making theese kind of movies! So relaxing to watch, and guys with this passion, absolutley lovley! Really warms your soul and makes you smile, thanks!
Absolutely fantastic what these chaps have achieved, they deserve every bit of praise coming their way, as anglers for generations to come will benefit from their amazing work . Brilliant.
Roach have always been my favourite also. ... I've never wanted to "specimen fish" for them. The exciting thrill for me is fishing casters, hemp or bread punch & seeing the float slide away, never knowing if it'll be another 6 ouncer or maybe a 1lb or even BIGGER redfin!! 😉
What a fantastic video, and fantastic people. A credit to our sport, and a credit to their families. This for me encapsulates so well why we all do it. There is a magic, it transcends simply catching fish
what a fantastic video Drennaninternational, absolutely brilliant, nice sound very very nice filming and very well presented by Trevor harrop, that don't half bring back some memories, thank you very much, 🎣
Trevor that experience you had as a child in Zen Buddhism is called Satori or in Japan Kensho. The falling away of you the observer and the object, in your case a Roach. I had it aged 26 with a Damselfly. The smell of Roach slime will always be the memory of childhood. I caught a 2 lb and 1 lb aged 9 on the river Eden in Kent. Magic halcyon day.
Spectacular film Drennan! A work of art! Trevor is truly poetic in the way he described trotting for roach you can really tell how much he loves this beautiful sport. Us fisherman will forever be indebt to Trevor & Budgie for the tremendous work they have done for fishing!
PS..... The biggest mistake I made (for 10+ years) was never having enough faith in Hemp to seriously use it as hook bait. ... "Yeh" I used it as feed in conjunction with casters for years. Then one day on the Grand Union it "clicked" on a stretch that a knew intimately for 10+ years!. I'd had many many brilliant nets of roach there on caster = .... I was absolutely taken back and suffered with MENTAL SHOCK!! 😨 .... I had the best roach fishing session ever! I caught several roach of a size (1 and a half pounds) that I didn't know existed in there!! I'd never had them that big from that location, even on the "roach favourite" caster 😨!! .... I was deeply affected by being brought down to earth, previously thinking that I was "an expert" 😨 ..... lol 😉
@@thezanzibarbarian5729 I'm originally from Warwickshire (a village nr Leamington Spa, so I know the Avon quite well. Where did you fish?? There's some kloncking Chub & Roach in there 😨!! And also in the Leam tributary (eg) nr Offchurch. If you saw the Leam at Offchurch, you wouldn't give it a 2nd look. It looks tiny & only good for kids minnow fishing 😉. But, if you walk downstream, the Leam meanders, widens & deepens, with some gorgeous looking "feature" pools on the bends .... one evening, I bagged-up on caster caught chub, including 4 that all weighed 5lb 2oz exactly (I weighed each of them). How freaky is that 😨? And there's BIGGER ones in there too! 😉. I agree = cheese is an awesome Chub bait!! ... cheese and a huge lobworm are the only baits I know where you don't need to loose feed for success. .. I massage 1 part Stilton + 2 parts Strong Cheddar together, and mould a grape size (or bigger) around a size 4 hook 😨 I don't worry about the hook point showing. The hook is totally hidden in the cheese.... when a Chub takes it, there's no messing about = it takes it confidently, and the hook flies out of the cheese when you strike!! .... Roach love "smelly cheese" also. Many a big open match has been won on canals, by a guy using it in conjunction with bread punch tactics. .. I'll probably get lynched for divulging that "secret" 😉 lol
Beautiful video. Great rod, disappointingly the middle section on my 14' Acolyte Plus section snapped in half for no apparent reason after a couple of years, first rod I have ever had break on me. Had to buy a new section, back to being the great rod it was - for many more years hopefully.
It's incredible what these 2 men have achieved on a river like the avon, yet the angling bodies that receive millions of pounds in licence fees and memberships aren't able to do even a fraction of what they have for anglers.
The place I refer to in the film was Tonbridge recreation ground, just up from the car park. Probably all built on now. We did fish Teston and Yalding as well, but not as often. I’ve not been back for decades.
Thank you for sharing your life long addiction with us. A real quality production. Your enthusiasm shines through. Your use of language to describe the glass like surface of the water and the red marble like tip of the float are sublime. Your friend in the mobility chair has a fine cap badge that I recognise. The Old Kingfisher guild of which I am also a member. . What did he catch to earn that ?
Lovely filming i love the Hampshire Avon i fished thousands of times over last 60 yrs with another great man Joe Harrop not sure if any connection to you Trevor? Kind regards Lee
No connection with Joe Harrop, although I used to joke about if I got a pound for every time I was asked that. I then asked Joe, the first time I met him, if he had any connection with Trevor Harrop and he replied… Who? We became good friends.
That's a proper cheeky male Chaffinch, nicking your maggots Trevor! But, isn't that what makes fishing magical 😉? You have difficulty explaining your love of Roach fishing? Here's my explanation of my love .... = Roach are smart finicky. They'll not touch your hook bait (except the silly tiddlers) if you're fishing crudely, or not feeding correctly.... They're not "easy" like those silly F1 carp & other narna fish, in overstocked commercial "ponds", where catching a 100lb netfull is about exciting & rewarding as watching Eastenders on TV 😨. That's why one 2lb Roach on the river, or natural lake/canal, is worth more than five 20lb + carp nowadays 😉 ❤
roach arent my go to fish, but at the end of the day a small hook with maggots on a river packed with fish, you just cant beat it. You litterally never know what youl catch next. Its by far the best way to fish. Dont get me wrong I love the fight of a carp, I like method feeding on a commercial now and again but its just something else catching those "wild" fish. What a fantastic bloke you are Trevor getting the Hampshire Avon back to top river again, what a brilliant job you have done.
Aah, thank you. That's very kind. I didn't do it single handedly though, but was part of the duo with the amazing Budgie Price...
Fantastic work by Trevor and Budgie. Have transformed the Avon back into a premier roach river once again 👏👏👏

The first fish I ever caught was a small roach back in the early 60's in a lake in Stockport.

Inspired take for river fishing 👍👍👍

I totally agree, my dream fish is a big roach but I want one to come along when I'm fishing on my terms. Not sat behind a pair of rods on alarms.
Yet another wonderful video. Thank you so much.
