Thank you so much for this video, I remember requesting this video because I was confused of which steps came first. I have a better understanding now of what to do as a sophomore in high school
In Europe, you can apply to medical school right after high-school. It's basically treated as a 6 year, BA plus MA programe, although that varies from country to country. Its 6 years long, where 3 are preclinical, and 3 clinical. After that you're a doctor of primary care, in most countries you're required to do a year of internship. After that you can apply for a specialisation, or residency. They're not as organised as in the US, at least here where I study. The local government basically dictates how many there will be. You can become a doctor at 24 years old here, tho that's rare since most people repeat a year or two.
In the US they try to make the process hell so that you go 300-400k in debt before you make a dime. The average student spends 35k alone on just the Bachelors degree. It’s all about bleeding money out of the system here.
Something that I started doing two days ago and helps me so much is yoga like an 8 minute UA-cam video of it before you study (if you don’t feel like study or want to study longer! I didn’t do this sooner because I thought how would it help and I it’s been really good. I beg you to do it one day without an this isn’t gonna work attitude because then it’s not going to WORK! I also started timing my studying I would track when I would get tired and needed a break (for me it was 50 mins then a 10-20 PRODUCTIVE break) it might be different for you! I hope these tips y’all and remember the hardest step is the first.
I feel like I have a love/hate relationship with my Biology major. When I started I swear they were so many people that we look like the entire university was made of biology people. But finishing this semester more than half of my classmates were gone and others didn't pass the classes. I dont know how common this is, but in my university it is said that this is the standar. I feel like Im in crazy town right now. I never expected such competitiveness in my first semester.
Xavier Altori tell me about it I had this orientation class that just consisted of pre-med biology students and by the end of the semester 3/4’s of the class had changed their majors and were not pursuing a career in medicine anymore.
Thank you so much! I'm an aspiring doctor in my first year of college. I'm thinking of gunning for a bachelor's in nursing as my premed and I hope all will go well.
@@ksenijabozovic409 they are doctors, the schooling is the exact same until residency where they pursue a speciality in anesthesiology. Just like a surgeon goes into genral surgery etc
I love the fact that you mentioned passion for medicine, because so many people aren't happy as doctors and won't be good ones because they go into the career wanting money, and not understanding how you should love anatomy and helping/interacting with people on a daily basis to be a physician!

Hello, Dr Jabbal, I have been watching your videos regarding medical school and medicine since senior year of my high school. I am a first generation about to be pre- med student this fall 2020. I am nervous since I am the first female to go to college. I have fears I may not succeed. As none in my household has been to college. I look around for someone to tell me that yes ! I can do it and I will. Recently I won a full ride scholarship to University of Missouri St. Louis. I am very blessed. I want to thank you for your time which you inspire millions. I pray a day comes when I can be a doctor, an immigrant student who wishes to break the odds and be a female Muslim doctor!
Respect to people who make it through this gauntlet. I settled along the way because I didn’t enjoy the school grind and didn’t want to waste my youth and go heavy in debt. It takes a very specific type of person to actually enjoy this process.
Hello! I want to be a surgeon and I'm 13 years old currently. This video really helped me to see what is ahead of me in my life! I want to prove all the people who said I can't be a doctor wrong and I also want to fulfill my passion. Thank you so much!!
@@Keppy601 Well... Uh they think it is a very tough field to succeed in and they want me to be an engineer instead. Yes, they're doing it for my own good and they don't want me to feel disappointed if I fail at achieving my goal. But I just can't help but feel like they aren't supporting me enough. My mother opted for the same field as I am going to, but she wasn't able to make it. So, maybe that was the reason they told me to not become a doctor. This might seem confusing and all, so if you don't understand, that's okay! Thanks for your concern though. Have a great day ahead!
Emergency medicine please? I wanna know about it more, I wanted to be a surgeon but i just dont know are they the same or not, probably not but I would really like to know
I shadowed in the ER and all I can say is that they handle a lot of medical cases for most of their shifts(diabetes, drunk people, cardiac issues, cardiac arrests and events) and when a trauma comes in(stab wounds, fractures, etc.) the surgeons are the ones that come to assess and stabilize while the ER physicians handle the medical management of them (blood, intubations, ordering solutions and medications to be given) putting in lines, etc.) there was one time where a person came in with esophageal varices and was bleeding, the GI doc came in to cauterize the bleed but the patient was to unstable to move into the OR so they had to put in a blakemore tube. basically this was the doc trying to stuff a catheter in the patients mouth and down the esophagus to block the bleed. the ER physicians told me this was about as procedurally heavy as it gets for them, medically this was a very complex case to manage and there were a lot of things to take into consideration but procedurally, what i saw was objectively very simple and i found myself spacing out. But when i saw an orthopedic surgeon drill into someones leg and provide traction for a gunshot victim, that was far more interesting to me but medically the only thing done was he was given pain meds. maybe an ER physician could be trained in doing a procedure like that but they wouldn't do it in practice because orthopedics would be there to do it. I believe this is what its like as for the differences between the 2 in the emergency setting.
shiva swami Thaankks!!! That was really helpful + i found now being a surgeon is way more interesting beside its hard and exhausting but way more interesting, I’m Thankful 💙💙
I’m currently an 8th grader, and we’re working on selecting our highschool courses. I’m my future, I want to be a dermatologist who focuses more in skin care/acne :) I’m not sure what classes/paths to take. And I really want to take Cambridge Biology, but I heard it’s hard
Omg literally same!! I am going to 8th and I have known that I wanted to become a dermatologist since like 4th or 5th grade. I have already started learning anatomy on the side of my regular school work😁
So I'm not watching this because I desire a career in medicine. I'm watching this because I'm writing a story in which one of the characters is going through medical school and later on become a doctor, so I needed to know what the process was and how to weave it into the plot. And holy shit, there's a LOT I need to keep track of. I'm so glad I did, because if this story ever becomes publicly viewed and the character goes from her last year of med school one year to being a full on doctor the next, I would get REEMED for inaccuracies.
Hi, sorry I'm late here, but do you mind sharing the title of your story, please? I'm quite intrigued to read that, since doctors stories are super interesting for me
@@cllvibs It's not exactly an original story, which is part of the reason it may never be publicly available. It's a TMNT story, the character in question being April. At the moment, it's basically a fanfiction with a very VERY small audience. I only have episode one written so far. If you're interested, it's on Archive of Our Own. Should just be titled TMNT Show or something like that, with the posters being myself and TheOnlyTarkles.
In the UK we go straight from high school (end of A-levels) to medical school and the course is around 5-6 years, and then we spend 2 years in foundation training before selecting a specialist (residency) programme to become a consultant which takes 3-8 years depending on the speciality. The american system seems so long and expensive considering you guys have to pay a lot more in tuition fees...good luck

Im here because of the fact I raised my parent's standards, by being a gifted child and telling them I wanted to be a surgeon since I was 7 ahaha. Im still more than excited to get into the Medical Field but I sometimes get scared and think I won't make it... but I'm only 15 and a sophomore so I have time, about a year to get everything right! I signed for PLTW Biomed and got accepted!! Im taking Bio and Chem and I took Algebra-Based Physics my Freshman year and hopefully I'll take AP bio and AP chem my junior year and continue and branch into an internship there or at a cancer center. I've also dissected brains and removed a tumor from a sheep's brain in 8th grade but the sheep was dead so I don't think its quite the same because there was 0 risk of hurting the patient so im debating on whether I want to be a brain surgeon or a general surgeon. Physics is important but Im not too good at it and I don't want to get a B or C and not have that solid grade. In the math department im kinda slacking because I took a year-long Alg 1 class last year which was a big mistake but if I double up the junior year and take pre-calc and trig I should be able to take Calc my senior year and be prepared for Med School. Im taking AP Gov to branch into sociology or maybe European History. And Im taking Orchestra as my art class, and I play field hockey, run track in summer and winter so sports year-round. I've completed the required community service hours im at 70 but of course, I need more which will be a little harder because of the national pandemic right now. I think Im on a decent path right now but I don't know. I have so many classes I want and need to take but Im limited to only 8 haha!
Omg we are deadass the same. I also raised my parents expectations on me about being a surgeon and I am scared to fail at it. I am also 15, so I have a long way to go. I am in a medical program this year where we will be learn about anatomy and doing hands on experience in hospitals. I am currently taking Chem and that’s literally the only science class expect for APES but ya. I hope we both do good and get the path we want! good luck 🍀
@@ash-s.9089 Sorry I didn't reply :( yea it's a little hard but our parents wouldnt have high expectations if they didn't think we could it♥️ One day we'll be Doctors!! I hope everything goes well with you :)
I really want to be a doctor because the human body has always just fascinated me and I think it’s amazing how it works, but I’m not sure if I’m ready for that type of commitment to go to school for more than half a decade.
I’m in my sophomore year of high school, and I attend a very small school. My school does not offer AP or IB courses. They do offer honors courses (which I am enrolled in) but they are mixed in with general ed, and all we get is extra work. I really want to attend a prestigious or very good university however I’m afraid my school will not allow me to reach my full potential. I’ve been talking to my parents about transferring schools, but they don’t agree with me doing so. I need help and advice, and will this affect my chances at a well-respected uni? I’m also very certain I want to go into the medical field (an OB-GYN, Oncologist, medical scientist, or pediatrician), and I can’t help by worry that I won’t be able to get into medical schools because my lack of academics in high school classes, my chances of a good university can even play a role in my medical career. One last thing, if I have a credit in honors classes, can I take an AP course in that same class on my own time during the summer? I’m considering maybe enrolling in an online AP class. Thank you so much for those of you who helped me.
I passed highschool with a gpa of literally 1.0 bc i basically gave up on life this past year was just so messed up. but i’ve been trying to teach myself good study habits over the summer. I’m planning to really try my best in community college and transfer somewhere better.
I'm a sophomore in high school and I'm dedicated to become a gynecologist, and oh boy after watching this video and the number of exams you have to give it is making me so nervous
Coming from a family of doctors and physicians, I feel like I would have a significant advantage to obtaining clinical experience and expert advice on med school 🤔
Americans have such a difficult system. I graduated high school, and directly after could do my bachelor medicine. In the Netherlands you don't have to do so much things before it
I was the same in high school then I did way better in college (although it needs lots of effort) but high school science isn't a concern (unless you apply to competitive universities )
In Indonesia you apply it after you graduated from high school 1. Pre-clinic (4 years) and you get S.ked bachelor (but you still not a doctor) 2. Co-ass (1,5-2 years) 3. After that you must take a competency exam (UKMPPD) after you passed the exam you have graduated and got a doctor deggre and must take the Hippocratic oath, then you must do an 4. Internship [obliged to work] (1 years) and if you want to work in a hospital or want to open a private clinic you must get a practice license Then you're done!, but if you want to get a specialist degree you have to go to specialist school which takes around 4-6 years of residency CMIIW
When would you recommend the BS/MD program or who would you recommend it for?? I love your videos btw! I just hope your still here by the time I get into college/university
My biggest dream is to become an air med to pay for med school, so that eventually i could become a pediatrician. My friends think i'm weird, because here i am (a 6th grader) already having a plan for my future jobs, and such. I have watched so many videos about what its like to be a doctor, and how to get there, and this video makes me so so excited for what is ahead of me.
Would going to a community College then transferring to a 4year for junior and senior year make it harder for me to get into medical school or even completely cut my chances? I'm not the strongest student out there but I'm slightly above average. I'm a junior with a 3.6 unweighted gpa, but I have a 32ACT score and I'm pretty confident in my ability to perform well above average in the sat. The only college that's a good drivable distance from me is a community College, and for personal reasons I don't really want to leave my mother by herself, at least for a while until I build up my savings, and we don't really have the means for her to move close to my university. The added benefit of the community College being completely free for anyone who has a 3.0gpa and above is also a big part of me considering it.
Community College is totally fine and will help you save money! As long as you get good grades, pass your classes & your college credits you’re in good hands!
Summer before sophomore year seems really early to me! Do you think the fact that other students might not have done as well at that time (since they likely didn’t have all the MCAT courses either) helped your percentile, or do you think that was negligible?
I’m a dual enrolled senior, I graduate from HS with an associate’s degree and I have a part time at Adidas. What does the community recommend for me to do to strengthen my path towards medicine?
Since you're a part-timer in Adidas then you should have enrolled to a Podiatry/Podiatric Med school since you have background on people's foot and shoes. At least, you don't have to quit such job since Podiatry schools don't have midnight rotations at the hospital.
I just wanted to confirm something. For the MCAT if we wanted to take a gap year, wouldn’t we take it during April or June senior year? Since it takes about a year for the whole process. But if we take it spring of junior year, and apply for med school summer between Junior year and senior, we would go fall of next year
this is the long route, ill give you a shortcut i completed highschool in the US then went back to my home country Pakistan and got admitted DIRECTLY into medical school via a "foreign seat" which has very low competition at only $2000 USD per year i had USMLE as my goal since the beginning so in 5th year of med school i gave it and got 243 and matched into internal medicine in New jersey so now im in IM residency at the age of 24 in the US with no student loans (total med school cost was around $10k which my parents easily paid for me) -- i also got really close to my culture in pakistan and had the best years of my life there with my extended family
@@thewyattt9668 i got matched in the US...all im saying is you can go back to your native country (if you're an immigrant or of immigrant parents) and then come back
Hey , I'm Indo American, living in India, and plan on completing my mbbs degree here and want to apply for an IM residency in the US , followed by a cardiology fellowship. Could u pls give me some advice regarding the IM residency ?
Yes, that is a short method , but how hard is it to get a surgery residency seat as im an immigrant? And apparently research also strengthens your application which i have no clue how im going to do it here in India.

You can become a doctor at 24 years old here, tho that's rare since most people repeat a year or two.
In Nigeria also
@@akintolamichael2807 Yeah, I'm guessing most countries have some variation on that system. Not many have the undergrad MS system
In the US they try to make the process hell so that you go 300-400k in debt before you make a dime. The average student spends 35k alone on just the Bachelors degree. It’s all about bleeding money out of the system here.
@@ChristianSedaPlays Well said.

Its like that everywhere. Half the students drop off after the first year from scientific fields.
Thank you so much! I'm an aspiring doctor in my first year of college. I'm thinking of gunning for a bachelor's in nursing as my premed and I hope all will go well.

I love the fact that you mentioned passion for medicine, because so many people aren't happy as doctors and won't be good ones because they go into the career wanting money, and not understanding how you should love anatomy and helping/interacting with people on a daily basis to be a physician!

You are amazing, man!
okay i just found this channel and now i’m binge-watching every video❤️ i live in germany but want to move to canada or usa for medical school and become a cardiologist or dermatologist. LETS GO💥💕
Hello, Dr Jabbal, I have been watching your videos regarding medical school and medicine since senior year of my high school.
Hope you're doing alright
I'm 12
And I really wanna become a dermatologist!
Thank You, Dr. Jubbal for explaining the path to becoming a doc!!
I'm in the same position, hopefully you will achieve your goals and I wish you the best!
@@musajaved9862 Thank you! And I wish you the same! Hope your dreams are fulfilled!! Have a good day :)
Why would anyone tell you that you can’t be a doctor?
@@Keppy601 Well... Uh they think it is a very tough field to succeed in and they want me to be an engineer instead. Yes, they're doing it for my own good and they don't want me to feel disappointed if I fail at achieving my goal. But I just can't help but feel like they aren't supporting me enough. My mother opted for the same field as I am going to, but she wasn't able to make it. So, maybe that was the reason they told me to not become a doctor.
This might seem confusing and all, so if you don't understand, that's okay! Thanks for your concern though. Have a great day ahead!
@@Keppy601 As they are insecure, they think they are doing you a favour, as they want to put you down and because they are jealous.

Thank you for the reply, will make sure to check out the story:)

I hope we both do good and get the path we want! good luck 🍀

I really want to be a doctor because the human body has always just fascinated me and I think it’s amazing how it works, but I’m not sure if I’m ready for that type of commitment to go to school for more than half a decade.
more than a decade
Between sophomore and junior year- oh wow we will see
I wish I had this back in high school!! Even college lol

I was the same in high school then I did way better in college (although it needs lots of effort) but high school science isn't a concern (unless you apply to competitive universities )
So much great information! Just wondering does attending a JC and transferring affect the process?
In Indonesia you apply it after you graduated from high school
1. Pre-clinic (4 years)
and you get S.ked bachelor (but you still not a doctor)
2. Co-ass (1,5-2 years)
3. After that you must take a competency exam (UKMPPD)
after you passed the exam you have graduated and got a doctor deggre and must take the Hippocratic oath, then you must do an
4. Internship [obliged to work] (1 years)
and if you want to work in a hospital or want to open a private clinic you must get a practice license
Then you're done!, but if you want to get a specialist degree you have to go to specialist school which takes around 4-6 years of residency

one day i will become a doctor
Summer after sophomore year
I’m a dual enrolled senior, I graduate from HS with an associate’s degree and I have a part time at Adidas. What does the community recommend for me to do to strengthen my path towards medicine?
Since you're a part-timer in Adidas then you should have enrolled to a Podiatry/Podiatric Med school since you have background on people's foot and shoes. At least, you don't have to quit such job since Podiatry schools don't have midnight rotations at the hospital.
i am 13 years old and i want to be a cardiologist

I just wanted to confirm something. For the MCAT if we wanted to take a gap year, wouldn’t we take it during April or June senior year? Since it takes about a year for the whole process. But if we take it spring of junior year, and apply for med school summer between Junior year and senior, we would go fall of next year
this is the long route, ill give you a shortcut
i completed highschool in the US then went back to my home country Pakistan and got admitted DIRECTLY into medical school via a "foreign seat" which has very low competition at only $2000 USD per year

so now im in IM residency at the age of 24 in the US with no student loans (total med school cost was around $10k which my parents easily paid for me) -- i also got really close to my culture in pakistan and had the best years of my life there with my extended family
