  • The following is a short clip from a practical karate seminar I taught at Abeweit Applied Karate Jutsu Dojo in Charlottetown, PEI. We were working on arm drags to take the back when a teachable moment led me to demonstrate how shuto uke can be used as a frame to counter.
Thanks to Jeff MacDonald for being my uke for this demonstration.

I show this as a grapple defense as well! For Taekwondo we call it an Assisted Knife Hand Block / 손날 거들어 막기 / Sonnal Geodeureo Makgi.

I stumbled across this grappling in a BJJ class once. I found myself doing it naturally. I love seeing TKD people getting interested in the practical applications of their forms!

@@AppliedShotokan Due to the origins of TKD being initially a mixture of Shotokan, Shorin Ryu, Kodokan Judo and a sprinkling of Chinese Quanfa I find that it's often more educational to examine Kata Bunkai sources rather than Poomsae Bunhae. Thank you for the amazing content!

I've made it work numerous times. Perhaps you can show us your no-nonsense moves for shuto.

Just just looked at your YT profile. I thought you might have some solid karate content. I found this. Solid. ua-cam.com/video/SVBXDyGHNSc/v-deo.html
