- Analysis of Sum by Meshuggah.
The duration cycle is always the same (4/3/3/4 sixteenth notes), while the pitch cycles change in the second half of the riff.

When I heard this for the first time I was around 16. I suffered of anxiety and this riff encapsulates it perfectly. I remember painting a deformed silhouette while listening to it.
Brings a tear to my eye
Same, very powerful
This is amazing. Now I know why i could never keep timing with this song when trying to play it. Keep making these
One of the most beautiful quant of music ever!!
Ending with that set of 5 and then starting with the scream is so sick
Amazing analysis. Meshuggah are so complex- your videos help me to constantly continue to learn and digest their material. Such a labour of love!
Beautiful work, keep it up!
Merci beaucoup!!!! :)
Best metal band oat.
I'll never forget hearing this for the first time...
I was on a 3 and a half hour drive to my grandparents and was on a part of the drive which was just a long, wide open section of Midwest freeway. I spaced the fuck out so goddamn hard I blew past the exit I was supposed to get off at by like 5 miles before I realized something was off.
Its so sad this channel died. I'd love to see Immortal Onion - Eye Tracking visualisation
Brilliantly demonstrated. Another way of grouping the subsets of notes is ||: 4+4+4+6 | 4+4+6 :|| 4+5 ||
love this channel
it's complicated and simple at the same time. i'm not good with theory, but i can just 'feel' the part and air guitar/drum somewhat accurately. cool analysis.
You need to keep making these
Wonderful work
As a physicist, I find your videos astonishing. I hope you will have the inspiration to make more of these small studies!
any way you can explain some of the dillinger escape plan's music?
They count I suppose.
maybe someone knows whats going on guitar-wise in the second half of the ending? (2:06-2:36) it's seems that accents change and another set of notes are introduced between the previous lower accents of D A# A F, but at the same time there are orchestrations (plus Jens' screaming) introduced into the mix and guitars are drowned out, I can sense the change in the lower register as bass also accents these additional notes, but can't concisely articulate what the hell is going there...
Wrong timestamps? This video is less than 2 minutes long.
@@vishnubachani9548 timestamps are for the song itself not the video :)
This is where my ear throws in the towel too. Like you said, doesn't help that the mix gets super murky there with screams added and synth string levels maybe bumped up a little too. Granted I'm not a polymetric wizard djent lord by any stretch, but I remember sitting down with this section of the song for hours trying to figure out what was happening and it seriously broke my brain.
This was the last Meshuggah album I really got into. Don't know if I just got older and moved on, but I think between this and "I" they could've ended it here and went out at the top of their game. Insane couple of albums.
im pretty sure they add a c# in the pattern after the d
listen from 0:50 and focus on the rhythm bass/guitar (can't tell which) that emerges at exactly 0:55 and making like a double stroke when/during the cycle repeats again. I never noticed this before.
amazing
Great stuff
Is this gonna be on the test🤔🤔🤔🤔????
I'd love to see you make a vid on Lateralus, please heart if you ever do.
Thanks for making this.
Sum is my favorite part of this great album.
Hey man… This might be too much to ask but can you do analysis of Shakti’s Shrini’s dream…. The rhythm there feels crazy.
E sharp?
Bruh do some squarepusher 😎❤️❤️
I found a simple rule to explain the pitch cycle lengths in the second half: ua-cam.com/video/yvS-tg-DzWY/v-deo.html Basically it’s just a 4 bar loop with a simple twist.
Love your videos by the way!
Yeah this is true thanks for the remark!! so it’s in order to keep the 4/4 feel ;)
biblical
Damn
