A printed geopolymer version of an Earthship design house would be an excellent combo. Earthships concept is to use passive systems design to be self sufficient in heating, cooling, water collection and recycling of grey and black water integrated with food growing to be as self sufficient off grid and low electricity needs as possible.
Love the long term thinking and the emphasis on sustainability and affordability by these guys. Totally agree with prioritizing setup time too. Factoring that in at this stage aids ease of adoption imo.
A company in Australia named Wagner EFC Group uses Geopolymer on massive infrastructure projects like roads and airport runways , They have it nailed . There has been 4 - 5 other startups in other cities that just didnt quite get it together yet . living in hope though.
Glad to see some general information on geopolymers; this has been studied for a couple of years already. It would be even more interesting to see that printer in action, let alone some more talks on scalability, challenges when handling strong alkaline solutions, issues with temperature, and so many other technical / operational aspects people seem to ignore when talking about geopolymers. In any case, thanks for bringing up some technical content Jarett!
OMFG, so super cool building tech. I am hoping one day you will figure out how to get those mixers to worksites. Imagine being able to pour just-in-time materials as-needed on site. That will be revolutionary.
Off the charts! Uz rock! I resonate wif yr korero. Live in tune with paparuanuku is how we use to live. Need one in New Zealand... Will watch this space!
I have been looking into local (southeast WI) possibilities for alternative building technologies. Geopolymers sound fantastic! But this area is a frickin' desert for anything other than stick-built spec or custom homes. I would LOVE to do something new, but it's just not available here yet. [...more...] To that end, I would encourage these gentlemen to focus on what they do best -- the Geopolymer aspect. This is a technology that really sounds like it needs to be promoted hard and grow by leaps and bounds. As for the other stuff they're experimenting with, I do hope they stick more to that core competency. Personally, I don't have any interest in my house doing hydroponics or including a shrimp farm. That kind of stuff is interesting, but it can wait forever AFAIC. Right now, I need a better, more affordable, better-engineered home a LOT worse.
Outstanding !!! Now, just to change the 3D printing system for unlimited volume = my concept is almost ready for anyone interested :) Also, I'm curious if this mortars ar similar to those ancient ones or better (I tend to go back to the idea of ash-based low-termperature cements)
Jarett! Thank you for sharing all this great information with everyone! Is this the only North American company attempting geopolymers? It appears that Renca and Wasp in Europe are quite well advanced in their development of geopolymers. Seems like the necessary game changer to help reduce the 30% of emissions from construction coming from "traditional" cement.
I really like this new idea of building homes and I see the benefits, but the old style way has over a 100 years of experience compared to this. My concern is will this hold up to years of normal wear and tear that a home experiences? A young couple that buys one of these homes probably will sell it in 15 years. Will it pass a home inspection after 15 years or will there be cracking in the walls creating a structural issue and if so is it something that can be repaired? A stud wall can be replaced easily but this seems like it may take a big undertaking if a exterior wall needs to be repaired.
Geopolymer is often made with crushed quartz and fly ash which is a waste product however it can also be made with laterite which occurs naturally in many countries , wonder if its found on Mars ?
yup that smoothing is throwing me off. keep seeing cowpie style designs just poured like.. .yeah would be nice to see someone print and them carve it into artwork for houses. much needed.
THIS is why lumber prices have gone nuts. They're trying to make as much as possible before the industry withers away. I've been following this since the founder of Contour Crafting spoke in a class of mine over a dozen years ago. Grew increasingly frustrated that he wasn't very interested in bringing it to market. Glad patents have expired opening the door to more entrepreneurial people.
No , lumber prices have gone nuts because Green lobbyists have tried to F**** up forestry , They have done it in Australia and then these nutter politicians go and purchase timber from overseas where its harvested by cutting down orangutang habitat , and we taxpayers pay 5 - 10 x more for that timber than sustainable timber grown in Australia. A couple of years ago some politicians here ordered timber brought all the way from Germany for a new Govt building while plotting to wipe out Forestry in their own country. We have peanuts , Macadamias , Almonds which are all edible varieties but then we have the toxic ones found in Govt jobs.
The man said looking for ways to grow, put together a comprehensive plan ideas and get ready to go over to Ukraine cuz that country housing buildings and infrastructure are all going to have to be rebuilt, what a way to be in a futuristic plan ideas and a way to show the world that 3D printing it's on its way to the Future
Visit geopolymer institute, they give strarting exact recipes. And it's all in the book of the inventor of this technology - professor Joseph Davidovits.
So sad It seems cannot make it there on the 17-th for the WORLD OF CONCRETE ... I have the architecture ready for this material and it is spectacular :) Fully authonomous free living !
You know one new radical idea is enough at a time. I don't think pushing shrimp farming is a good marketing strategy for unknown materials. I don't see any examples of their polymers or construction. Really? Forget the shrimp!
I am sure they are aiming for the Earthship industry - totally self-sufficient dwellings. Which is a good strategy as it gets more market appeal than simply another building technique or material.
Elon Musk is planning a city East of Austin Gigafactory. This will be a modern planned city maybe even with boring company tunnels. He might jump at opportunity to be an investor.
They should focus on all things geopolymer, and maybe not spend so much time on the fish tank stuff... even the outdoor 3d printer is off-focus from what seems to be the core of the business.
The ancients used geo polymers. We’ve never done anything new! Glad to see it come back!!

cool. totally agree. my true dream home. hope someone builds an edible aquarium in an Earthship, for beauty and yum yums :0 hahah
This was absolutely wonderful tour interview!

Dude if that thing does not shrink and does not freeze that would be PERFECT FOR ROADS

The fact that you can just break up the misprint and reuse the material is awesome
Yeah, I think that is super-underrated. good for pointing it out. totally cool.

question: is this polymer concrete 3d printing have steel rebars? or no need? as this materials can stand by each own?
OMFG, so super cool building tech. I am hoping one day you will figure out how to get those mixers to worksites. Imagine being able to pour just-in-time materials as-needed on site. That will be revolutionary.
Fantastic to see sustainable feedstocks starting to come through

🤗GREAT NEWS JARETT 🤩🤩🤩😍😍😍

Is there much off-gassing? Very cool!
Thanks Jarett, just wrote them a letter.
Amazing

Seems like it

Interesting video. Im in grad school for structural engineering. Any recommendations for programs I should pick up?

Yes, 3D printing on Mars, great content

I suppose the bathtub, shower, sink and toilet could all be done in the same print, with some smoothing of course. Maybe a bed and seating too.
yup that smoothing is throwing me off. keep seeing cowpie style designs just poured like.. .yeah would be nice to see someone print and them carve it into artwork for houses. much needed.

Where can we get the bags of geo mix?
I'm curios how they incorporate the technology with reinforcements

good idea.
Let's start with the 8 million home shortage in the US, first. Need millions of affordable starter homes built here, or there will be less growth.
so how to make geopolymer? I mean, an exact recipe? Ratios, ingredients, what would i need?
Visit geopolymer institute, they give strarting exact recipes. And it's all in the book of the inventor of this technology - professor Joseph Davidovits.

If you construct a building with it I’ll stop by and do a video with you!
@@automateconstruction IT'S A DEAL :) THX !
Whoever invests needs to bring in a ceo.
Fantastic!
They must be awfully busy. I emailed them on Jan. 29th, 2022 and I have not received any response yet.
Didn't see anything made?
if I win the lottery I will have them build my house...

Okay, I see White Hat messaging all over this video... :)
What is White Hat?

That guy in white t-shirt comes across as a bully. He even wouldn't allow his colleague to chip in word.
I won't invest with such a person
Children? And here the guy with the neck-scarf and a polo shirt wearing loud tap dancing shoes was setting off my gaydar.
