@@DarrenPlumpton Guess what my nickname was when I was at school! With a name like Peter Clarke, it doesn’t take much imagination to guess does it! Pet!! Petula was THE talent during the sixties when I was at school. Her name was on everyone’s lips, so I got lumbered with her name as a nickname as my name was so similar to hers. Also, what I haven’t mentioned was that she was born in Epsom in Surrey in the UK in 1930. When she was going to school during the war, my grandfather who was a policeman, used to take her, along with some other girls to her school. So, I have an extremely tenuous connection to her. Remember seeing her in a film called ‘The RunawayBus’ with Frankie Howerd which was made in the fifties. I think I first saw the film in 1964. That’s when I fell in love in love with her and also after seeing her video singing ‘Downtown’. Couldn’t get to sleep for weeks just thinking about her. Schoolboy crush I guess. I was 11! She was so beautiful and lovely! Such wonderful days. Shall never forget her. Broke my heart when I found out she was married!
My uncle Billy returned from WWII, Saipan/Tinian, Marine Sargeant. My hero but was damaged from war. PATULA helped these vets beyond her imagination. Many times my Uncle Billy said he loved her music. I witnessed it and I was only 11 yo. Now 76 yo. She's precious.
Incredible voice, so sharp, so clear, and so strong. This makes me want to cry, reminds me so much of my childhood in the 60's, most of which has drastically changed in many ways. I had the opportunity of meeting her at a place where I worked - I told her I had the 'International Hits' album from when I was a kid and she gave me her agents telephone number saying that if I could get it to their offices on London's Regent Street she would sign it for me - So, I did, and a few week later I had a call and went to collect it, signed personally and saying 'Thank you'. How very sweet, she didn't have to do that, she was so cheerful when we met and I asked her all about those songs and told her how much they meant to me. I remember her saying 'that's the sole reason I do this job', and gave me a big hug.

Just an hour or so listening to music from the 60s & 70s and you realise we're going through some cultural dark age now. Where did all those brilliant songwriters go!
Everything about this is perfection. The voice, the face, the hairstyle, the dress, her sweet movements. In the instrumental section, Petula does that little dance and she just kills it. (2:23) Oh, if we only had artistry like that now, instead of the cheap attempts to get attention.
At 76 years old, I look back on the music of the 60’s with great fondness….There will never be music like that again For the most part singer’s really could sing because they weren’t overpowered by the music

Unbelievable! What a voice! What a talent. Blows away the garbage you hear by most of today's female vocalists. Petula made a smooth transition from actress to singer. She is intelligent, beautiful and captivating. Yes, she spoke French fluently and recorded songs in Italian and German! Even in the late 50's when she was in her mid-late 20's Petula had a presence about her and her voice was magnificent. It is obvious this young, French actor was smitten with her. She had that effect on men.
The Frenchman was the singer Sacha Distel. He and Petula were old friends. When Petula married her French husband and moved to France, Sacha helped her get established in her new French singing career. They worked on various shows together over the years and remained good friends.
Petula is crystal clear, what a voice, enough good can't be said about her, the beauty she brings to the world, now for nearly 8 decades. Thanks for putting her on here.
Petula Clark was fluent in French. She knocked it out of the park with this song. It’s one of my all-time favorites, then and now. She sure was beautiful from head to toe. It’s a crying shame a lot of today’s, uh, artists look like an unmade bed. Some of them LOOK like they just got out of bed. After an all-night session.

From one fellow Gunner to another I have to say that I ABSOLUTELY agree with your comment Graham,in fact I couldn't agree more with what you have written.
Highlights: She sings the word 'demanding' in her English accent, choosing not to Americanise the word and making it rhyme with 'understanding'. The crescendo near the end 'just as long as you are there' showcases her range and voice with stunning clarity. Her movements are relatively demure until, at around 2.19, the Frenchman Sacha Distel does a little British 1960's jig, encouraging Petula to dance, and she does, like a butterfly; it is a beautiful moment from a beautiful performer.

May I amend my earlier reply please as I made a terrible mistake what I really meant to say was....PETULA CLARK THE GREATEST FEMALE VOCALIST OF ALL TIME. Thank you.
Jackie Trent, who wrote the lyrics, was from the West Midlands. In her accent it would also have been a short 'a' in 'demanding'. Jackie originally meant to record this song herself, since it was basically about her feelings for Tony Hatch (who was still married to his first wife). However Petula's husband wanted a song for Petula quickly to follow up her previous hits, so Petula got the recording, and hit. Petula sang it her way long 'a' and all. She didn't get on with Jackie anyway :)

Sasha Distel, had his own very popular Saturday evening show on the BBC in the 1970,s, the French guests were carefully chosen for their command of English, so that he could chat to them in front of the audience. He also appeared in West End productions.
As much as I like the studio recording, there is something really compelling about the simplicity, purity and power of this live recording. It's ... fun. Yes, it isn't perfect, but I could happily listen to this version any time. She really had a great voice and exuded a great deal of class. Thanks for posting this.
Perhaps it's simply the fact that there were so few live performances from TV shows from this era (as lipsynching to the record was more or less the rule), and what few there are that are posted on UA-cam, posters, for some inexplicable reason, feel the need to strip the audio of the performance and replace with the record. So that makes this live performance unique and wonderful.
I heard this and as an 11 year old, walked to the record store and bought the Pye single. I played it and played it. Some 52 years later I finally heard her sing it live at a very intimate concert in Gatineau. Quebec. This has always been my favourite. They don’t write or perform them like this any more.
Don't forget she'd married a French man and was living in France at the time. For a time she was probably a bigger star in France than she was in England.
