    I don't think people realize you don't choose a stance, you switch between all stances during combat and you need to learn each ones moveset. Once you learn that you're pretty much unstoppable. I love it.

      I use High for larger slower enemies, Low for 1v2/3, and Mid for 1v1. Worked out for me really well.

      with spears you can just ignore the nioh combat system and kill everything with spacing and single hits xd

      I think the idea is that while you may be able to just stick to one stance and do fine for the beta; the actual game will only get harder, put you in more strategically demanding situations, and force you switch up your playstyle. I tried every weapon class in the beta, and while there was nothing stopping me from just swinging my axe like a madman until I guard break the enemy, I know that there's no way that tactic is going to last past the first couple of stages (heck, that Tachibana cunt already threw that tactic down the shitter). I feel like the people that don't try to really learn the ins and outs of Nioh's combat are going to have a bad time when the game comes out.

      I never said DD was bad, in fact it's my favorite ps3 game.Capcom today is not creating games that are as good as their past releases and as time passed, while capcom decided to focus more on dlc during that passed time, a lot of their better developers left the company, hell most of Capcom's top devs went to Platinum games. Now I doubt they will ever release another DD game, and will probably move to mobile if RE7 fails. The only franchise they have that's still doing great is MH, and that's the only game they have that I know is still being created and can look forward to.

      There were definitely other games that were difficult aside from just two series, In truth i don't understand why no once compares this game to the onimusha series.This series was quite difficult as well since you couldn't refill hp pots or buy them like either of those games and had to rely on either a hidden item or save shrines to heal.

    Let's be honest... Combat is faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar better than Souls series.
    You can use low stance to quickly dash to your opponent's back than you can finish him off with a high stance combo! or you can be defensive with mid stance and hit&run until your opponent's ki depletes all the way and boom!
    It's so much fun and refreshing compared to souls... since almost all the time you use same tactics in souls series.
    note; I platinumed all the souls game, including Bloodborne and Demon's Souls.

    • @TheAgentmigs
      @TheAgentmigs 7 років тому +1

      You're right...with Souls you just put up your shield and wait for your enemy to strike then strafe behind em and backstab or attack over and over and over again. Dark Souls entices players to turtle up too much, which is boring..thats why they made that huge change with making Bloodborne.

    • @16xthedetail76

      One thing I also noticed is in Nioh armour actually makes a difference. Unlike in dark souls (especially dark souls 3 where armour does less than in bloodborne even). And with some axe skills that buff your defence a tank-like play style is possible.

    I've played the Last Chance Trial and I loved it. The enemies felt satisfying, the bosses were good and gave a decent challenge. The level design for the most part were fine. Like you said, some of the rooms feel bland. And I definitely agree with that. Hopefully Team Ninja will implement a bit of variety on those chest rooms. The comparison to Onimusha is superficial, while the list of mechanics that are borrowed directly from DS is actually fairly staggering once you start going through it. I'm totally cool with it, as I'd love souls-likes to become a new genre like rogue-likes, but people really seem to be fooling themselves when try say it's totally different. This is the single most Souls-like product ever produced by anyone outside of From Software.

    • @marcosdheleno
      @marcosdheleno 7 років тому +5

      the comparison is not superficial, because dark souls takes alot from onimusha as well, maybe not from the sequels, but the original onimusha was basically resident evil with samurai swords.

    • @KeithBallardA
      @KeithBallardA 7 років тому

      The list of similarities in gameplay between Nioh and Dark Souls is staggeringly huge, with more mechanics being the same than are different. Onimusha comparisons are quite a stretch once you get past Samurai, Nobunaga, and Yokai.

  • @jemijohnson257
    @jemijohnson257 7 років тому +26

    Weapons in this game are amazing the Kiszarigama (butchered the name the chain sickle weapon) freaking melts everything especially yokai/demons.

    • @dra6o0n
      @dra6o0n 7 років тому +2

      They really need to add ninja weapons and skills in the game like the Tachi, the shortsword which lets you be much more maneuverable like a ninja. You have a dual sword that has a long and short sword, but the tachi alone is for the one handed reverse grip, with hand to hand combo mixed in (punching, kicking, and slashing).
      Not to mention there are authentic 'Japanese' ninja weapons that utilizes claws.

    • @SquareInsider
      @SquareInsider 7 років тому +1

      The Kusarigama (chain/sickle/weight) weapon IS actually a shinobi weapon, created as an all purpose weapon for fighting samurai, climbing, and especially for disarming opponents extremely quickly. As for the Tachi shinobi short sword, it is in fact in the game.

    • @MultiPhil44
      @MultiPhil44 7 років тому

      +dra6o0n there's an entire ninja skill/weapon move set tree and both weapons are in the game. fucking nerd. lel.

    • @dra6o0n
      @dra6o0n 7 років тому

      The Kusarigama is the weapon tab with it's own skill sets for combo.
      I'm talking about more weapon types. Ninja skills refer to combo and new moves that's activated in combat, not Ninjutsu items to equip and use.
      For instance whilst you can unlock the Palm Grip move to grab and counter a enemy, it's the only move in the Ninjutsu tab, and does not contain stuff like iron claws, which are used in some Japanese samurai games, and the shortsword, which is not dual swords.
      The reason why you have a shortsword, not a 'longsword' variant like the Katana, is because it's oriented into very close quarter combat in tight spaces, and is the main weapon of use of the Shinobis that focus on martial arts.
      It's much lighter, so a Shinobi can leap and probably do flips with them, and maybe moonsault over enemies behind them.
      A very good example is the gauntlet, whilst is a weapon and armor, the real weapon is the martial artists' body. The Gauntlet provides a way to block weapons and projectile, and with CQC in martial arts, you can utilize more grappling moves and more maneuverable dodges like side strafing to circle around a enemy without rolling or lunging in a straight line. This means up against the Yokai, the hand to hand combat methods would focus more on ki damage and stunning your enemies to critically finish them off. Not to mention it'll look cooler.

    I agree with you on most of what you said. After playing the demo, I'm interested, but not hyped. The gameplay is great. I'd argue that Dark Souls 3 and Bloodborne still have better game-feel due to animation and sound design that makes each swing of your weapon feel much more weighty than Nioh's, but on purely technical term it certainly offers a lot more depth and it's got me interested to play the full game.
    Everything else was just kinda there.
    On another purely technical note, the level design was pretty good as well. But yeah, like you said, in term of atmosphere... there's really nothing there. It feels very cramped, packed with challenge rather than packed with meaning. Even the samurai showdown at the end, while great looking, still feels so cramped ! Why couldn't it have been a larger field ? Instead it's another small room surrounded by rocks. It makes it far less impressive than it otherwise could have been.
    The story also was presented in such an uninteresting manner. Super short audiologs. No emotion shines through such short length.
    The only thing I'd disagree with you on is the loot system. To me it just looks like it'll force me into fiddling with menu so that a bunch of numbers are more beneficial to me but won't have any significant impact on the core gameplay. I hate menus in games, I don't play to sit around looking at a menu, comparing items as if I was selecting groceries. It's dull.
    All in all, seems like a gameplay first, everything else secondary kind of experience. Which saddens me a bit, I'd want the whole package to be enthralling.

    • @dra6o0n
      @dra6o0n 7 років тому

      It's probably because the Ogress map is the newest and compared to the older ones, it wasn't exactly very expansive in the map space, the last two beta probably had a much bigger map, and more missions (like three) rather than 1 mission that had co-op.
      The special unlock of this demo is Mark of the Warrior. Apparently it doesn't let you get the Mark of the Conquerer since that belongs to the earlier beta.

    The one thing i really loved with Nioh was the integration between melee weapons and long range weapons. Being able to fight melee and then back away, fire off a quick arrow and return to melee fighting. That was so much fun. And the fact that the sight doesn't follow the enemy, you have to follow them actively is great.
    But no, this game did not remind me of Dark Souls. I can't see the similarities at all.

  • @TheDutchMan83
    @TheDutchMan83 7 років тому +12

    The only thing that is like Dark Souls in this game are the *Stat distribution & Shrines (bonfires)* and thats it. Best way to describe Nioh is.. Ninja Gaiden and Diablo 3 fell in love and had a baby they named Nioh.
    1. It's like they gave steroids to Ninja Gaiden to up the difficulty
    2. The loot system is very similar to Diablo 3 (see the loot on the ground and color coding). uncommon, common, rare ect ect.
    3. Mission based so you can run them over and over to farm for gear and gold.
    4. Crafting system for gear and weapons.
    5. Reforging (swap stats for new stats to get the perfect weapon or armor).
    6. Gear actualy does improve your char, and makes you feel you get stronger each time you find a upgrade.

    • @dra6o0n
      @dra6o0n 7 років тому +4

      You actually don't have to if you build your character to be lightweight, as ki usage increases the heavier you are. This punishes players that rely on heavy armor tanking by doubling or even tripling their ki usage if they don't invest in stamina for the weight management.

    • @ynsmdd8678
      @ynsmdd8678 7 років тому +4

      How is L canceling in melee unecessary. L canceling is litteraly the most useful techskill and is paramount for the game's meta. Without l canceling. A lot of moves would be useless on shield which would negate shield pressure, and would actually just be useless in most situation because your opponent could just tank the hit without crouch-canceling and get a punish on you.

      No it's not here to make it harder, l-cancelling should be manual because it adds to the mind games. Sometimes people will shield laggy move in order to mess up the l canceling timing which allows for some heavy punishes. Also just the fact that you need timing is good, because it makes the skillcap higher. Maybe competitive games are not for you cause not every techskill (especially one that is the most important) shouldn't be done for you. Noobs who can't l cancel will lose against people who can.

    I played this a lot over the weekend, yet I still don't know whether I really like it. It's definitely not what I was expecting what with all the "Samurai version of Dark Souls" hype it was receiving, so in that regard, I was rather disappointed. The combat is ok, but the difficulty feels artificial to me in that they've just given enemies way more health and have them do more damage, which makes it all seem a bit of a grind. Speaking of grind, I don't really like the loot aspect of the game - it's more like Diablo or Destiny, and I did end up finding myself having to grind over and over again for drops and "souls" to level up. I dunno man, went in expecting to love this, came out feeling kinda meh and let down.

    • @liammoffat7277
      @liammoffat7277 7 років тому +4

      I felt like the difference in damage between you and the enemies were too biased towards the enemies, why can basic guys two shot me even with health investment when my heaviest axe swing does maybe a 5th of their health?
      I also felt that the boss was really badly designed, it's moves were near impossible to dodge due to their tracking and she was basically a damage sponge.
      However to put some positives to Nioh so that I don't just bash it; I really like the button mapping more than in souls, I also felt the weapons were far more interesting (the Kusarigama was especially fun and I would love one in souls).

      You're not alone man. I had every intention of buying this game day one and co-oping with my buddy who has joined me in Bloodborne and DS3. After playing through the demo, yesterday, I've come to think this game as cheap and not worth full price. It seems hard for the wrong reasons and overall easy. Animations suck and are clunky, the camera control is jerky, and the controls are not well thought out. I had no problems learning the controls, but the layout is inefficient. It just feels like a corridor simulator with gimmicky combat.

      Dozerboy 1010 I think one of my big dislikes is the random loot drops and associated grinding involved with that. I end up with so much crap in my inventory that I'm supposed to deal with, but it's a hassle I don't want or need.

      Lol, I don't know what you are talking about. You can beat the ogress without taking any hits. You have to hug her left side and dodge to the left when she does her swipe attack. Her jump attack is also dodgable by dodging behind her. Her flurry attack is also avoidable by using the sound queue to dodge. I also have no idea what you are talking about. Enemies have weak points like in bloodborne, if you hit them they take fuckton of damage and deplete their stamina which allows you to almost kill them. This isn't dark souls where you play slowly. You gotta combo them and deplete their stamina and take them out swiftly.

    Hmm....This game isn't really doing it for me. I tried the first two demos, and it just wasn't fun to play. Its not the difficulty, nor lack of skill that's the problem. Its simply feels like I've played games like this that are far better designed and made. When I played my first Soulsborne game, Dark Souls, it immediately had me hooked. I loved the armor, the world, that gameplay. It was magic. But this game just left me feeling hollow. Like it was missing a soul of its own. Then again, most games that copy the "Soulsborne" formula are normally terrible. Except for "Salt and Sanctuary". That game nailed the feel of its predecessors, while also being its own thing. Sort of like how Saints Row nailed the GTA formula, but also did things exciting and new. But this game isn't that, and it seems like a mishmash of trying to be both Bloodborne and Demon/Dark Souls, and failing at both. I, personally, will pass on this one, and wait for another companies' attempt at this formula. Oh, and before the Fanboys or whatever start to rage at me: I'm not bashing the game in no way, fashion or form. This is just my feelings on the game and are in no way fact. If you like this game, that's you. Not me. So please, no torches or pitchforks.

  • @pyramidhead2747
    @pyramidhead2747 7 років тому +12

    Really don't know why people are hesitant to compare games clearly inspired by Dark Souls to it. This is a Dark Souls clone, it wouldn't exist if DS hadn't existed, which is something I'd be fine with if it wasn't so bad and broken.
    This game is just not sure what it wants to do mechanically. Dark Souls expects patience from players; use shields or roll until they find an opening to attack, and it works. Bloodborne wants players to be aggressive and nimble, use the Iframes of the dodges as their main offensive and defensive strategy. Lords of The Fallen wants players to be a tank and equip the heaviest gear they have and trade blows with the enemy. What does Nioh want from us? Dodging towards the enemy isn't reliable as there are very few Iframes, so unless you have super human reflexes you'll get smacked in at least 30% of the attempts following that strategy. Blocking is useless against the more powerful enemies as they eat up all your ki. Attacking doesn't stun-lock or stagger most of the bigger enemies, at least not with the weapons I used, so dishing out more than a couple of hits at a time is guaranteed to get you killed. The only viable "strategy" is to get some distance from the enemy, cheese a couple of hits in, then back up or run away like a bitch and repeat over and over again. Very fun.
    The ki pulse regain system is an interesting game mechanic on paper, but it's dumb as fuck in practice. When finishing a combo you have to wait half a second to a second for you to be able to perform a ki pulse, during that time the enemy will be able to hit you so the obvious thing to do is dodge away which cancels out your ability to do a ki pulse, so why the fuck does the mechanic exist? You could use it when fighting the weaker enemies as they'll usually be stunned after a combo which gives you enough time, but why would I use it when they're easy enough to be killed without it? Try to use the ki pulse after hitting a boss or a tough enemy and you're dead.
    If there's something I'm missing or I'm playing the game wrong then the devs need to get that across.

      Pyramid Head exactly man, took the words from my mind. I really wanted to love this game but like you said the only viable option it seems is to wait until the enemy loses stamina then get a couple of hits in then run off. I really think they should delay the game and sort it, either that or release a patch that gives different modes of play, eg classic stamina as we're used to and do away with the stamina bars for the enemies. Doesn't have to be mandatory, just an option at the start of the game eg would you like to play the game in style A B or C.

      MafusiXCVII Ah, the expected "you're just not good enough" reply. I'm not complaining that the game is difficult -- if that was my problem I wouldn't fight soul of cinder in DS3 with a fucking broken straight sword in NG+4, lol. My problem is that the playstyle that the game requires is pathetic. I was bored playing the demo because It forced me to play a very defensive role. Deaths felt cheap unlike SoulsBorne games, and yes, I will compare it to Dark Souls since that's the game they've failed to copy.
      I didn't expect this game to be as good as dark souls, I just wanted it to be a good game. Unfortunately it seems like it won't be if the beta is representative of the final game.

    • @ynsmdd8678
      @ynsmdd8678 7 років тому +6

      ???????? how is this game defensive at all. To adress your point with the ki pulse, there is a skill that lets you use it while dodging. Also, I play fucking agressive and the game rewards me. Once you deplete your enemy's stamina you can stunlock them and kill them swiftly. Also, dodging behind enemies is usually a good tactic if you want to get 5 hits or even more.

    I bought the game and I honestly regret it. The combat is great and refreshing, it really brings something new to get used to. It is very hard at the start, but it will go easier as you go. What I did not like about this game is the boss design. Every boss fight is won by triggering an attack and hitting once or twice. The environment is not as exciting as the souls game. The loot system messes things up. I got a strong weapon at the start and it takes ages to find a stronger weapon so that means your whole inventory is full. If you like the souls game and are looking for a soul game, I would not recommend this one cuz you will get dissapointed in the long run. Good luck.

    4:10 "Combat feel satisfying and never cheap. The majority of the battles you face are one on one". That sounds so good. Obviously, this is similar to Souls games. I hate how so many popular games just throw hordes of weak enemies at you. Then, the mechanics mainly boil down to button mashing. I played the alpha of this and it was very unpolished. I didn't really enjoy it all that much. Sadly, it didn't give the option to map the attack actions onto the shoulder buttons. I'm hoping this game scratches the souls itch I get once in a while.

    Having played DS3, Bloodborne and Nioh, every game is good in their own way . But in terms of combat , Nioh is the best because there is so much depth and oh yes... there's refashioning and Soul Matching ( like Diablo 3) it's a very good feature of the game. In terms of Gameplay and atmosphere Bloodborne is the best out of all 3. The Victorian gothic setting and the tense atmosphere was amazing. I will never forget my first fight with the cleric beast

    I think once people realize this isnt a game thats played like souls, they have more fun. Learn the ki recharge right away. invest in all the universal weapons skills first (especially the ki dodge recharge) and test out all four main weapons to find which weapon suits you best. You can respec after the second mission, so dont worry about misspending your levels.

    I love what it did with the combat, but to say it doesn't really have much in common with Souls would just be incorrect, it's very much it's own game, but clearly in the vein as the Souls games. Experience works pretty much the same, you die, you drop it, you retrieve it, spend it at places that might as well be bonfires. Enemies all respawn upon death, save bosses (who you get big glowy fog walls behind you when you approach). Life and stamina bars are pretty much the same. In just the two levels I played, the way the world is laid out is largely the same, start in one area, continue along, eventually you'll circle back with a short cut (for if you die). Encounters felt similar. It's Dark Souls with a more robust combat system, no reason to avoid the comparison.

    I love Nioh thus far. Seeing new info getting released is absolutely making me more hyped for the game. Since Dark Souls series is nearing its end (not sure if they'd just want to leave it be, when its as successful as it is), and Bloodborne's probably not getting a sequel. Nioh will be a nice pace of change. I think it's quite fair to bring Soulsborne into comparison, since they've excelled at making their games hard, but fair, compared to other ARPGs which pretty much either goes unfair or babysits you.
    As for Lords of the fallen... I never could see that as Dark Souls esque. It was so slow, and sluggish D:

    As usual I liked hearing your opinion. I wholeheartedly agree with it, though :) The environment indeed seemed bland. I read people, who had played more areas than the latest Beta one, saying that the other environments were various in terms of color and props. Still from what I've seen in other videos, the level of detail is quite the same - low. I don't see this changing though so I'm readying myself for it from now. As for the dungeon crawler aspect, honestly I didn't think the game was that way until I heard you say it. I'm slightly disappointed and I wish it had an interconnected world. I still loved the combat and the depth the game provided in customizing your playstyle and technique. I cannot wait to play the full game.
    Oh, one more thing. I'm so glad I'm not the one saying not to compare this game to the Souls games. It certainly has borrowed some major game mechanics but that's it. It's very different. It has added and expanded on lots of the Souls mechanics to be compared to them. The common must be looked at in the sense "Hey, I know how this works from Dark Souls or Bloodborne, nice. I can focus on climbing the rest of this game's almost vertical learning curve." Thanks for reading :)

    I felt like it was really simular to dark souls but had a "soul" all its own in the style of which it played the system idea of dying and losing your exp or soul and how the fighting style works, while maybe demon souls was the original game to make this style of gameplay popular with many other game, including recently a ps4 game Let it die where you actually lose your character and all the items they have, and then you would either spend RL money to revive them or get a new character and hunt down the old you and defeat them to reclaim them to be able to use them again minus all your gear they had on them. My point being it dose the die punishment style of game well and the fighting style is fantastic and I cant wait to see how much actual japanese lore this game has in it and see many many clock cats in ninja pockets

    I enjoyed the world, the combat, the armor, the weapons, and the enemies. This game will be way better than Dark Souls (2 and beyond) as enemies don't pivot on a dime to track you and the enemies aren't massive gangly things with infinite stamina.

    I never had any frame rate issues, no "stutters". I would like to ask though... when you first loaded the demo there were options that change how the game works. One stabilized frame rate, the other improved resolution, and the other did something else that I didn't care for. Which did you choose? Because the stabilize frame rate one (the one that I chose) could have resolved those issues as opposed to the increased resolution.

    It looks good imo - if it comes to PC further down the line then I see myself playing it a lot but as it stands as a PS4 exclusive, I won't be playing it; namely because I don't have a PS4. I do agree with the levels looking bland though - I appreciate that authentic feudal Japan aesthetic a lot but it needs more colour, a bit more lit up areas and hell, throw in some of that twisted demonic goodness that you see in something like the Shadow Warrior games, makes areas with this game's sort of theme look way more alive and vibrant.

    Lords of the Fallen was horrible, this game is closer to, if not better than Dark Souls, and that's coming from an avid Souls player. I honestly went straight in comparing the two, and it totally satisfied my hunger for a newer "Souls" experience. When I heard of it, when the beta came out, I ridiculed it from the very beginning. That literally only lasted for about 2-3 enemy encounters lol. Unlike LotF, it was very fluent and tactical, bringing me back to the memories of playing Demon's Souls when it first released. Then I discovered the stances; this is one of many reasons I think it may just be the game to finally give the Souls series a good fight for it's throne. I played the beta over and over, beating each stage about 5 or so times just to experiment with stance combos and learn the strengths and weaknesses of each weapon, and which weapons work best for different enemy types. I fell in love the more I discovered.
    Moving on to the next reason I think it will take the throne of Souls - the equipment. One part of the Souls series I've always had a problem with (well moreso after the influx of CoD kids when Dark Souls 2 was released), was that weapons and armor are locked at certain attack points and armor ratings, which led to everyone copying each other to make the strongest builds. It kind of killed the multiplayer for me (I still love the single player aspect of them though). No one has their own preferences anymore like they did in Demon's Souls and the majority of my time with the first Dark Souls. Now there are just a bunch of Havel clones running around spamming magic. The weapons and armor in Nioh is based on level, like Baldur's Gate type rpgs, which gives you more choice in what type of fighter you can be. Not only that, but each weapon type is unique and challenging to master, meaning that even though a certain hammer in the game may be the strongest weapon, not everyone will be skilled enough to wield it. Players are going to have their own preferences in this game that will make the pvp a lot more skill based, rather than power based, which will make each pvp encounter more interesting and fun. I am at a really hard crossroad right now though, sadly. Do I buy this or wait for Horizon and get Nioh later this year? I restrict myself to only 1 full priced game every 6 months so I don't waste money getting burned by hype trains. But these both look like they deserve all the hype those trains are carrying.

    We're not comparing any 3rd person game to Dark Souls, just this. Saying it doesn't compare is just silly. The combat is essentially the same, the stamina drain on the bar is the same, the ui looks basically the same, you die and lose xp the same forcing you to restart which is the same. Of course there are differences like the stances and weapon types but they very very clearly went into this intending to make a dark souls styled game.
    That doesn't mean it's bad. We need games like this. If it improves on what DS has to offer then it sets the bar higher and that makes future games better, and if it sucks then we can see why DS is better.
