    Shan was on another level in 1986. If I remember correctly, Kool G. Rap and BDK hadn't released records yet, but let's keep it real. Shan was the face of the Juice Crew in '86 unless I missed that memo stating otherwise. There was nothing on the radio like "The Bridge." It was iconic. It was the first record that I heard which put the history of rap in perspective, although it was a history with a Queens angle. Of course, Kris just went absolutely bonkers when he heard it. Not only did he want to get put on, but Kris was a brilliant, self-educated historian himself. So, it only made sense to attack the throne, which was the Juice Crew at that time. Marley Marl was that man..and Shan was the prince. And Shan did hold his own. Down By Law was an irrefutably hot record....but Boogie Down Productions shut everybody down.

      Indeed. The thing I don't get about what G.Rap is saying about BDP singling out Shan was...he/they kept saying "Juice Crew" or some derivative of it a number of times over a few albums. If that ain't calling out each and every member in a nutshell, then G.Rap and the rest of them were either wary of battling Kris(I doubt that) or full of shit. I don't know.

      I've seen an interview with Big Daddy Kane and he said that he was friends with Krs-One and when "The Bridge Is Over" came out Krs-One & Miss Melody were physically helping him move into his new apartment. Also that him and Shan didn't really vibe cuz Shan wouldn't call Kane by his name. He kept calling him "The new nigga". Masta Ace was able to hop on "The Symphony " cuz Shan didn't go to the session that was right after the photo shoot for the album "Marley Marl In Control Vol.1" cuz he didn't wanna do a joint with "The new nigga".

      @Brian, Kool G rap was the first emcee that was able to adapt AFTER the stylistic TIDAL WAVE that was "Rakim" in the hip hop world! If you listen to Cool G's flow PRE Eric B for President 1987 and then compare it to his flow POST Eric B for President, you can see that he not only saw the shift, he adapted exquisitely! You know how in the historical time line there is BC and AD? The dividing line between those two eras is the death of Christ. BC stand for Before Christ and AD stands for After the Death of Christ. (Literally it translates from the Greek to mean Year of our Lord, but that's what it's trying to say) Rakim holds a similar position in the world of hip hop dividing what we consider today to be "Old school" and "New school". We can designate that dividing point "BR" for Before Rakim and "AR" for after Rakim! lol 1986 was BR. 1987 was AR and G rap was the first true GREAT rapper both lyrically and stylistically, AR.

My point is regardless of what you're saying cause it had nothing to do with my original comment. My point was just because KRS has 25+ albums doesn't make him a superior MC. And G Rap has 11 albums, 4 albums alone would crush KRS! But your entitled to your opinion as i am to mines (respectfully) but i know for a fact Kool G Rap would crush him easily bar for bar... G-rap and KRS in a freestyle battle,.. I know Kris would take him (not easily I should add). But come to rhyming and visually telling your point and getting it across, and word play in a song, G-rap is one of the best at it that I've heard do it. Both so good it sucks to even think about it.

      @@sihletenjwa7761 lol exactly. Kool G Rap is the definition of an MC. He started off as a lyrical MC and then birth the mafioso style of rap. His multi-syllabic rhyme schemes were then influence artists like big pun who he got down and kissed his ring finger if you listen to Kool G Rap tell the story when Big Pun met him. The point I'm trying to make is that Kool Raps influence is over some of the greatest MCS even after his era. If it wasn't for Nas in my opinion Kool G Rap was the greatest lyrical MC I ever heard because lyrics is what matters so if you're not lyrical then you're not the best. Peace and love...

KRS makes better albums with the style changes, knowledge/wisdom raps and his West Indian/Jamaican flows as well. By All Means Necessary and Edutainment were two solid albums. Hip hop artists began wearing grills in the early 1980s; New Yorker Eddie Plein, owner of Eddie's Gold Teeth, is often credited with starting the trend.Plein made gold caps for Flavor Flav, and then outfitted New York rappers including Big Daddy Kane and Kool G. Rap.He later moved to Atlanta, where he designed ever-more-elaborate grills for rappers like OutKast, Goodie Mob, Ludacris, and Lil Jon.Other writers have cited Slick Rick as an important early contributor.

    Grills remained popular in the Southern U.S., especially in Houston or Memphis, even as they rose and fell from popularity elsewhere, and the rise of Dirty South rappers in the 2000s spurred a nationwide grill trend. During this time, grills frequently appeared in hip hop music, most notably in the 2005 number one single "Grillz," by Nelly, Paul Wall, Big Gipp, and Ali, and in other Paul Wall songs. Wall is known for his grill business as well as his rapping; his clients include Kanye West

    No doubt u are right. I am 35 and am an east coast dude all the way. The only people that were rockin gold fronts before the east coast MC's were my aunts from down south lol. But they are not rappers. As far as rap goes East coast made it hot and popular to wear gold fronts.

    If G Rap used a producer that made some killer beats & music. He'd go platinum now.
    Even kool Keith said years ago what everyone knew about Nas. His beats were keeping him down.

    KRS most certainly called out Marley Marl on Bridge is over. And the reason why Kane & G Rap weren't involved according to Marley was the whole thing started when BDP and Shan and him were in separate studios, same building and Mr Magic was there also and KRS asked what they thought of what he thought of their sound and he was like it was "wack" and that ignited the 🥩

  • @dawolf4274
    @dawolf4274 7 років тому +1

    people can say whatever they want NOW. but at that particular time in Hip Hop, Krs was on a fuckin warpath ! not gonna say unstoppable, but he was going for the jugular. and if anybody knows the history of Kane and Krs, you know why Kane didn't get involved. they were boys.

    I wonder if the story about how BDP got dissed by Mr. magic about trying to get there songs played on his radio show ....... which he didn't do , on the way out they supposedly took one of Marleys beat reels , those beats make up most of Criminal Minded as I was told

    Funny that G remembers the 3 Times Dope diss. I remember hearing "Juice Crew Diss" on Cool C's album in like '89. I was like "where the hell did this cime from?!?!". I still bumped it because I loved and love that whole album, but it seemed random as hell. Wasn't any internet back then haha....
