    Hahaha Gracie was massive! A great singer and humorous entertainer. Peter was an ascerbic commentator on life rather than a performer.
    Different generations. We all felt that Peter was being very cheeky, but then that was his style.
    I vote for Gracie!!!!!! Look out for her Stop and Shop and the Co-op Shop!

      Joan E Boney Ratcliffe I recall an interview with Gracie where she said she’d have gladly hung up Sally from the largest aspidistra in the world, but it was what the public wanted not what she wanted that mattered.
      I’ve heard some very early Gracie and she had a strong classical soprano, and having seen some of the “songs” she had to sing for the umpteen films she was in, I can see she might have been frustrated with the way her career went, musically. They were pretty tuneless to say the least!
      And yes, I agree that Peter was being cheeky here.

    Eee nobody can get rid of our Gracie! And as for george he's CHAMPION!
    I love their music, films and stories and hope they should live on into the future!

    That door bell at the end they gave Cook of her singing would get rid of any unwanted callers.

    He was the father of the 60s satire boom and votest the best comedian in history many times. He was described by Stephen Fry as 'the funniest man who ever drew breath.'

    Tragic....it was one of his last ever appearances on tv in 1995. He'd managed to get his life back on track and seemed set to make waves in comedy once more

    Spike Milligan also hated Gracie Fields. Read his war memoirs, they are hilarious and the poor sod ended up meeting her.

    But you are wrong, tashkentfox, she did not join forces with the Italians in WWII, she was married to an Italian before the war broke out and was treated badly by the English because of it

  • @operathephantom

    Personally, I think all these anti-Gracie comments are terrible.
    I am an avid Gracie fan, and she did more for this country in WW2 than Vera Lynn even dreamt about -yes, she married an Italian, but she did not 'bugger off to Pizzaland' -she moved to Capri in the early 30s before the war, and her war effort raised more than 6million -all under the guidance of the great Winston Churchill.
    There will never be another Gracie Fields, 'Our Gracie', but there will be comics such as Peter Cook.

  • @gordonl
    @gordonl 17 років тому +1

    I'd disagree.. he'd obviously been bitten by Bachus yet chose not to die but to fight back. God bless you Pete.

  • @operathephantom

    and no, Peter Cook never had as many fans as Gracie...when she was in hospital in 1938 the public sent her over half a million messages of good will, and she cut her recovery period short when war was declared and she went off straight into captive Belgium to entertain troops.
    Yeah, Peter Cook may have paved the way for Monty Python, but Gracie paved the way for ALL modern music recordings -over 1000 songs in her repetoire, and over 65 years in the business...Definately, more than Cook.

      operathephantom I recall an interview Gracie gave towards the end of her life. She said that she’d gladly have hung Sally from the largest aspidistra in the world, but it was about what her audience wanted, not what she wanted that mattered.
      I saw some very early Gracie footage and she had a strong classical soprano-maybe not world class-but very good! Her later films, not doubt cranked out 4 times a year, had their moments, but there was a lot of pretty tuneless novelty songs about Co Op shops and “oop North” cliches.
      There was clearly some frustration in her life re. her career and the way it went, but she wasn’t bitter.
      I’m a Gracie fan and a Peter Cook fan, and I think he’s being cheeky rather than malicious here. Peter and Dud did several parodies of the way the Upper classes sneered at and kept down the working classes, whilst appropriating it for themselves! Check out their “Bo Dudley” sketch; they were jazz fans and this was a barbed swipe at pompous academics prattling on about things they didn’t understand!

    It's pretty disgraceful that somebody has resorted to making 6 fake accounts just to mod down the people who are defending Gracie from Cook's vitriol. Sure Cook was talented, but is it so painful to admit that so was Gracie?
    Of course, I bet I'll now be modded to hell by those 6 fake accounts...

    On the one hand, I do find her quite annoying as an entertainer; her voice cuts through me and I can't really take to her as a whole really. On the other I don't really want to denigrate her as she did entertain a lot of people. To most of the current generation, her popularity is a bafflement. George Formby is far more accessable.

    Gracie Fields went to live in the Us during the war and left Anne Shelton and Vera Flynn to face the Hun, she got a bad press and then spent the rest of the war annoying British soldiers in Italy to try and attone for it.
    And she's a ghastly, awful proffesional Northerner.

    Peter Cook. Unpleasant and arrogant.

  • @romanbrough
    @romanbrough 14 років тому +1

    Peter Cook was clever. But it is the sort of arrogant, nasty cleverness, that always has to knock those who havent had the same level of education. I find this worse than swearing. I always knew he was arrogant, but not quite this nasty.
    Typical BBC. Ffinds anything Northen an easy target. Such a shame I cant pay my licence fee to a different organisation. He was not by several billon the most intellegent man of the 20th Century.

  • @jaddajn1
    @jaddajn1 12 років тому +1

    hear hear. safe comedy at its worst. easy targets. peter cook is soooo overrated. if a female comedian had come out with half the inanities this bloated ego had on this show she'd be pilloried
