I was blessed to see his Lear on the stage. I can still see him being brought in from the moors. I still hear the resonance of his voice. The greatest performance I've ever seen anywhere, any time.
My pleasure! Thank you so much for your lovely comment and for watching! I think they had such a beautiful relationship - and Paul very much kept his feet on the ground, with both him and Joy remembering what the important thing in life were for them and their family xx
Paul Schofield was an actor that I wa very proud of, I remember an American friend thought he was American I wa so proud to correct her and say he was British. Thank you for this one especially.
Paul Scofield is one of the best British actors we have every produced. His acting is second to none. Thank you for this great mini bio tribute to a shining star!
I’ve not seen The Train but it’s definitely one I’d like to see! I think it’s lovely when you hear of celebrities you like and find out they have lived near you - even though it was before my time I love that Diana Dors lived in Chelsea - where I was born!
The Train is one of my favorite movie's..I traced down the locations where it was shot in France..Much love and respect for him- from Chandigarh, India
He was very special - an exceptionally great actor and such a nice person from what I’ve read ❤️🥰 thank you so much for your lovely comment and for watching the video - it’s very appreciated xx
It was extremely rare! His wife Joy said that he would sometimes refuse jobs if he couldn’t make the last train home at night! She also said that she would wait for him at the station at 12.30am and that she loved to hear his footsteps in the night! So romantic!
His performance in the film adaptation of A Man For All Seasons is, in my opinion, one of finest ever. The moment his wife says she fears she may hate him for his decision you can literally see his heart shatter and for a brief moment life itself almost leaves him. I admit, I cry every time I watch that scene. Incredible.
Thank you so much for your comment xx I also share your admiration for Paul Scofield. His performance in A Man For All Seasons is one of my all-time favourites. That scene where his wife expresses her fear of hating him is incredibly powerful. You can literally see his heart shatter, and for a brief moment, it's like life itself almost leaves him. I admit, I cry every time I watch that scene too and knowing it was one of Diana Dors's all time favourites makes it resonate even more with me! It's truly incredible. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts! xxxx
I'm delighted to hear that you enjoyed the tribute to Paul Scofield! His portrayal of the Ghost in Hamlet was truly outstanding - thank you for watching! xxxx
I was an actor while in college. I was sometimes required to cry on stage--an asset for which I was known. When I needed to summon up tears, I could not think of anything so sad from my own past, but I could clearly recall the scene in the film of A Man For All Seasons in which Scofield as Sir Thomas More bids goodbye to his family from his prison cell. That memorey would always bring the tears instantly. Scofield was much like More in that he distrusted worldly honors and preferred work and the joy of his family. He prefered village life to the chaos of the city and chose love over acclaim. I recommend all of his other film work, especially his role as Van Doren Sr. in director Robert Redford's film Quiz Show. How I miss Paul Scofield. How the stage and screen miss him. Who can take his place?
Thank you so much for your lovely comment! The scene you are referring to always makes me feel emotional and Diana Dors said in an interview it was one of her favourite films and also brought tears to her eyes each time she watch it! I’m sure there must be someone but I can’t think of any actor today who has the talent and integrity of Paul Scofield! Xx
I agree with you about 'A man for all Seasons'. He was also cast in another favourite film of mine, 'The Shooting Party', sadly he was badly injured during filming early on, and had to be replaced by James Mason. It turned out to be James Mason's last film. 👍
I haven’t seen The Shooting Party! I need to look it up - I think Man for All Seasons went towards cementing my interest in history and in particular Tudor times!
@@BeautifulBadandBizarre Shar, I hope I have your name right, I can definitely recommend the shooting party, it's not a well known film, but a great cast, James Mason, Edward Fox, Robert Hardy, Gordon Jackson, Dorothy Tutin, Frank Windsor, and a lovely cameo by John Gielgud.👍

I agree with you about A Man for All Seasons being his best film but was surprised there was no mention of his riveting performance as the art obsessed German officer in John Frankenheimer's The Train (1964). Talking of trains, I once walked past Mr Scofield when he was hard at work reading a script in a first class carriage on a train to London from Sussex. I only just managed to leave him in peace as the temptation to thank him was very strong.

Hi Shar, I loved this video, (surprise! I love all your videos on here and posts on IG), brilliant that Paul’s first role was playing Juliette! He was a true Gentleman and how beautiful that he and his wife were together for 65 years, that is very rare. Thank you so much!!!!! I can’t help mentioning our Dors 🤭❤️ she knew and/or worked with practically everyone who was anyone! I agree with you entirely - it was wonderful that Paul Schofield could do the job he loved and not let it go to his head and to keep his family at the forefront of his mind at all times - wanting what was best for them all - he did go to one after show party in the early days with Joy - and they both hated it - and he vowed never to do it again! Hello again,Shar; just looking at your Paul Scofield video...I never knew he was a Sussex boy; most of my family are from Sussex,as my name attests. And I was in "A Man For All Seasons" in October 2008 👏⚘
I’m glad you found the Paul Scofield video interesting. It’s always fascinating to learn about the roots of the people we admire, especially when they’re connected to places with personal significance to us. Sussex is beautiful! How exciting that you were in "A Man for All Seasons"-what a wonderful experience that must have been! Thanks for sharing! xxxxx
I have to admit, when I saw the name I sisnt know who the gentleman was, but as I was watching your bio of him I found myself recognising him and for the films I haven't seen, you have inspired me to look them out. Thanks for another great video x
Thank you so much! If you haven’t seen A Man For All Season’s I’d totally recommend it! It’s a real epic and I love every minute of it! I love Anna Karenina too - which is unusual for me because Im crazy about the book and films rarely live up to the book - but it’s so good! Xxx
Lovely piece, as always. Thank you. If you haven't already, you must watch the three minute clip on You Tube of Scofield as Salieri in Amadeus. Salieri's realisation, that compared to Mozart he will always be second rate is just played to perfection. Heartbreakingly brilliant. He was truly great. Thanks again.

One of my favourite films is "A Man For All Seasons". NO-ONE but Paul Scofield could have played the part of Thomas More quite as brilliantly as he did. I have seen this film so many times, but I never get tired of watching Paul's mesmerizing performance. Paul Scofield was a truly brilliant actor and he sounds like he was a really nice, kind and decent man. The world is a less beautiful place without him. Rest in peace Mr. Scofield.

Enjoyed the video! PS is one of my all-time fave rave actors. Any idea where I can get a copy of "Nineteen Nineteen" (1985), starring PS? It tells the story of 2 of Freud's original patients getting together to discuss their therapy in later years. (It's supposed to be enthralling!) Thank You!
Hi - Thank you! No!!! I’ve been looking for that film too! I’ve sometimes been able to get rare copies on dvd of various films - but I’ve not seen that one available on the lists! I’d love to hear if you track it down - I love Frank Finlay too and I believe he is the voice of Freud - Good luck with your search!
I saw Mel Gibson's Hamlet in a movie theater when I was a kid and didn't know who Scofield was but his performance had a real impact on me. I didn't know what a legend he was but he was the part I most remember.

I've been a super fan of Paul Scofield since watching a Man for all seasons at aged 7, now 50 years later he is still astonishing on screen and I have many of pauls personal letters which give a deep understanding of him. Thank you so much for your lovely comment - The Crucible is brilliant I’m a massive fan of Arthur Miller’s work - After The Fall was the theme of my uni dissertation - absolutely fascinating! I agree about Patricia Routledge too - a unique voice although I haven’t heard Private Lives - I need to look out for that - thank you! ❤️
Please keep motivated your doing a great job 👍🌹
Thank you so much!!!! I’ve had a hectic December - wasn’t expecting it to be this busy but I’m really looking forward to getting out and about in the New Year again and back to uploading weekly videos - I’ve got another one of my favourites currently in production for the New Year! ❤️❤️❤️ I truly appreciate your support for the channel! Thank you xxxx
Martin Chuzzlewit is one of the best tv series of all time. Why it’s never been repeated on the BBC is beyond me.
I’m always surprised when such iconic and famous people have graves that are overgrown or not well kept.
Paul Schofield was a remarkable actor and a remarkable man. R.I.P. 🙏
I agree - although for me A Man For All Seasons is his most iconic work - because it really fed my love for Tudor history! He was mesmerising as Thomas More - he brought history to life! ❤️❤️❤️ thank you so much for your comment and for watching 🌹
New sub.. love these videos. Thankyou for your sensitive approach towards this subject but also a good description of the video subject. Some I'd never heard of so it's really interesting. Thankyou!
My absolute pleasure! Thank you for watching! I’m glad you enjoyed the video - I think these are amazing people and love visiting and remembering their lives - your comment is a fabulous start to the day I really appreciate it! Thank you for subscribing too!

@@BeautifulBadandBizarre anytime! Credit where it is due. I spent the morning catching up on your back catalogue! Looking forward to seeing the new one x
Thank you! ❤️
An actor of quality experience in drama
He certainly was! ❤️
Hey luv great actor love all of the old stuff x
Me too! Paul Scofield was brilliant - not many actors today who I could imagine playing Sir Thomas More so convincingly!
Paul Schofield also appeared in the original stage production of the musical " Expresso Bongo " which I saw back in the 60s.
Oh wow! You actually saw him acting on stage? That must have been incredible! What a memory to have!
A wonderful video big thank you ma'am!
My pleasure! Thank you for your lovely comment xxxx
Hello again,Shar; just looking at your Paul Scofield video...I never knew he was a Sussex boy; most of my family are from Sussex,as my name attests.
And I was in "A Man For All Seasons" in October
2008
👏⚘
I’m glad you found the Paul Scofield video interesting. It’s always fascinating to learn about the roots of the people we admire, especially when they’re connected to places with personal significance to us. Sussex is beautiful! How exciting that you were in "A Man for All Seasons"-what a wonderful experience that must have been! Thanks for sharing! xxxxx
@@BeautifulBadandBizarreThanks for that; I would have enjoyed it more had not my mother died 2 weeks before curtain up 💔
PS I was 😈 Richard Rich.
🧡⚘
I will check that out thank you! I hadn't watched it! Thank you so much for your lovely comment, I do appreciate you watching and I will go in search of said clip!!!! Thank you again! xxxxx
Scofield.
Hi char...you truly are a beautiful shunning star one our universe .....So so wish all the relations understand what you do. as they may have forgotten...love ya x
Thank you!
Thank you for sharing that memory! Paul Scofield's portrayal of the Ghost in Mel Gibson's Hamlet is indeed unforgettable. His powerful presence and performance left a lasting impression on many viewers, even those who might not have been familiar with his legendary status at the time. It's amazing how certain performances can resonate with us and stay with us over the years. Scofield's talent truly shines through in that role. xxxx
Rest in peace
Good job 👏
Thank you!
Another wonderful video thank you! What a lovely couple and so good to see that they both lived to a good old age. at 6.13 the gravestone just states their names, is that on the back of the stone? cant wait for the next one please
Yes that’s the back of the stone ❤️ You can see the front of the stone just after - there is a lovely epitaph for both of them on the front xxx I’ve been having a long birthday 🤭 and I’ve got a big family event at the weekend but I’ve got some fab videos coming up that I hope you’ll enjoy! ❤️
@@BeautifulBadandBizarre cant wait. Yes I saw the epitaph bit. Its unusual to have their names on the back though too isnt it.
It is! They were a real love story! ❤️
I wonder why Paul Scofield didn't do more films?
I think - aside from his wife and family - the stage was his first love! He put a great deal of his life into live performances and I from what I've read that's what he enjoyed the most - and of course he was a family man first and foremost - and wasn't interested in the fluff that went on around making films xx
Same as yours, A Man for All Seasons.
It’s such an excellent film - it truly brings history to life! ❤️
🫶
Toe defect. That's novel.
🤷🏼♀️🤔🤭
I've been a super fan of Paul Scofield since watching a Man for all seasons at aged 7, now 50 years later he is still astonishing on screen and I have many of pauls personal letters which give a deep understanding of him.
I also have a book that belonged to him which was a gift from joy his wife, it has an inscription from her to him on the inside cover, it's my most treasured item I own .
What a wonderful and personal connection you have with Paul Scofield’s work! He was truly such a talented and professional actor and it's not surprising his performances have stayed with you for so many years. I love watching him in films, particularly A Man For All Seasons. The letters and book you have are truly special treasures. Thank you for sharing your experiences and insights-Paul Scofield’s legacy continues to inspire and move many of us xxxx
