Yep I was a teenager in the late 70's it was epic for snow and cold on the east coast. Many of our low temp records that still stand today were set in '77 and '78. There was a good size lake in our neighborhood and that's the only time I've seen it completely freeze over to the point where you could skate on it (although the deep end of the lake was dicey). The shallow end was so solid that it turned into a local skating rink for weeks and we even had a 55 gallon drum out there burning a fire. This was in central NC. Usually when we get cold spells we have a day or two where it doesn't get above freezing with lows in the teens, but 2 days later it might be 70* (which happened with the recent polar vortex).
We would sled down three mile hill which was a good ride if you made the 90° corner about halfway down and didn't wind up on Mr Kings front porch. It was still more fun riding dirt bikes in the snow.
What a great idea. In the '60's when I was a kid we had a hill a little over a 1/3 mile long, we iced it with water from the house at the top. The house also had a tractor that was fun to drive down the ice hill and tow us sledders back up to the top. I had a Flexible Flyer and my brother had a sled with wider runners, it was the fastest sled in the neighborhood. The tractor could tow 6 of us back up. Thanks for the memories Juan.
OOOOHHHH those MEMORIES........ Polished the rust off those runners many - many times up in the canyon trails north of Klamath Falls back in the 40's and 50's................ THANKS JUAN FOR THE "FLASHBACK"
I had a Flexible Flyer as a kid in Colorado. Best one on the block with a chrome bumper. Had something similar for my kids but it broke too easily. Glad to see they are still being made. Great smile on dad & son. YEAH !
I was out this morning doing the same thing taking a much needed day off of plowing snow. My smile was just as wide. It's not often that we get these perfect conditions for the flexible flyer.
Oh man, does watching that ever bring back the memories! We had a big road hill just down the street from us back in Michigan that was absolutely perfect for the Flexible Flyers. There were about a dozen kids in the neighborhood that would go sledding there every chance we got. We'd be out there till almost dark, freezing our butts off but not wanting to go home. My mother had an old cow horn that was hollowed out and when it was time for us to go home, she'd go outside and blow that cow horn. You could hear it for miles !! The road made a big corner at the bottom of the hill and the low man on the totem pole had to stand there, freezing his a$$ off, and warn the rest of us that a car was coming. Damn, those were good times.
No preflight check and no clearance from the tower ! I have a super fond memory from my childhood of sledding with family and friends on a very steep hill that was closed to traffic . It was basically impossible to walk up it . My friends aunt and uncle had V-8 Jeeps for Elk hunting and they drove up and down it to pack snow into a perfect surface for sledding . Also after everybody made the run they would drive down and had a rope with knots to pull us back up the hill . The adults were having some "grown up" beverages and us kids hot chocolate . Thinking back , I imagine all the parents were probably extremely sore the next day . Funnest day ever .
It’s 0330 and in sitting here with a HUGE smile, giggling like a child! That was not only fun, it was a major memory knocker from when I was a kid & we’d go up to Butte Meadows to our family cabin to sled and tube! It was SUCH a blast! Much obliged B family!
Juan and Pete jammin the flexi! Big kid and a little kid. Makes me miss my dad so much. He taught and shared so many things with me. Just like you two. I'm 64 and dad has been gone about 10 years but a day doesn't go by I don't think of him and mom. If it's okay I will relive the good times vicariously through you. Thanks so much for sharing and bringing a smile and a tear.
Somehow I just feel your just crusin' for a brusin'........... but........ LOOKS FUN AS HECK !....... ....even that pup is into it and that boy of yours is in heaven,.....Thats what LIFE is about.... AWESOME.
Wow! I haven't been on a sled in over 50 years. Used to sled down a hill in Minneapolis that emptied out at a 5 foot jump into Minnehaha Creek. Great fun!
Been well over 50 years since the last time time I rode one of those sleds Juan! Great smiles for both you and your young son. But you may as well head right into the intro of the "better" sledding for Pete: aka the snow mobile :) -Bob...
I grew up with the Flexible Flyer. Had three in different lengths. Missouri doesn't get deep snow but we do get Ice and those sleds are a lot of fun on a hill covered in ice.
We never had a sled. Instead we had a thing called a "super tuber". My mom gave us kids a "snow day" once so we could enjoy the snow and super tuber all day on our property in Port Townsend Washington.. It was late 70's early 80's.. 2 feet of snow.. was amazing fun..
One time, oh 55 years qgo, we had an ice storm and it took the sanders a couple hous to get to our road in northern New York. All the kids on it had a ball with their Flexible Flyers. Great litlle memory you brought to mind. Thanks.
I have my flexible flyer from circa 1954 in the garage attic next to the Lionel train set. I can recall as a 4 year old, my older sisters pulling me through town with a rope tied to an open Willys military surplus Jeep! We didn't have the gift a of a Banner Mountain to give us inclined sled runs! You are generating memories Juan!
Great memories, I built a sled of the same design only using cross country skis so, you did not need a packed hill. Also in Austin NV we packed the hill with boots and the you run and slam down. If you catch up to another sled you can grab and flip them. Your so close the the ground you just roll and laugh a lot. Iguana
Good to see that Pete has a readily reasoned answer to your question about the need for right rudder; no blank looks as understanding rules. I'm sure the reason it goes faster with two on board has to be the application of additional smarts and experience, not to say a little good living. I like the humour.
Man, boy, dog & sled...just another day on Banner Mountain for a family of juvenile delinquents. Man, I sure wish I was there! Well done video JB! Thanks.
I think I had 3 Flexes in my childhood. I still have the last one I got in '58 at age 10.It got 4 years of hard use till I was 14 and took up snow skiing. Looking back, I see I had more fun on my F. F.s in ten years than the 45 years of skiing. sdh in CT
“Get the kids out here” to test the sled? You are the kid, Juan. Love the fun. Kid’s growing fast, spend as much time as you can with them. Wax the runners.
Flexible flyers are so much fun..!! Look at the smile on Juan's face...LOL. Back in the 1970s we would go behind an elementary school that was on a hill. The run was 900 feet long and it emptied into a huge field. Some days my friends and I would do that run 25 times...!!! We always prayed for an ice topping for more speed
I miss that type of sledding. I had several Flexible Flyers in my childhood. Why because my buddies and I rode them hard when the conditions were right. We made a track in our neighbors field that was two or three hundreds yards long. Really fast in the morning and late afternoon when it was coldest. By the way, I am talking 1950's . I am now 75.
I see that it's been a great snow year in CA! Even down in SoCal. I was in LA recently and to see the San Gabriel Mountains capped in snow was quite a sight!
That was the sled I had as a kid too, back in the 60's. Thanks for triggering memories! My goodness the area is beautiful in the winter!! I was enjoying the setting as you recorded too. I thought we were going to see some drone shots too. That would be cool!
HA! That looked like an absolute blast! Pete sure was having fun - what a smile! 😀 I'll never forget my first trip on our Flexible Flyer when I was a kid. Conditions were rarely good in MA for that sled, so I never really liked it much ... that was, until this winding trail through the woods into the neighbor's backyard flash froze overnight! Let me tell you, I must've been going close to 40 MPH when I became slightly airborne on the short, steep section going into the neighbor's yard! MAN was that fun! I think I wore that sled out that day! It was like being on the Alpine Slide up in NH - had total control (except for stopping, of course, LOL!!), and was blistering fast! 👍👍
Juan, that looks like great fun, never been on one,,but where I was born is in the tropics, zero snow, typically no fireplaces,,so SANTA came through the KEYHOLE !, Although in the US since 59, the idea never came up, nor even an area to do so,,Carpe DIEM, , Enjoy yourselves cheers, from Maplewood Nj
That sure brings back memories. I walked up a road that had about a 30 degree tilt that was over a block long. Man was that a wild ride at 10 years old!!
The last time I saw one of those was 1975 in Denver Colorado. First good freeze the road in front of the house was solid ice, most of the road was pretty level except a nice little hill right in front of my house. A bunch of neighbor kids has their Flexi Flyers out. In that kind of weather people normally drive their cars about a half block apart from each other. You would see the guy 1/2 block ahead of you do a 360 spin, laugh at him, then do a 360 in the same exact spot yourself. It didn't matter if you hit the brake or gas, or steered left or right, you were spinning no matter what. Drivers there knew to keep a good distance between them, unlike most California drivers who in that kind of weather drive faster, closer together, and blame the "weather" when there are multi-car wrecks. (CA drivers do that in thick fog too.)
We rode our sleds on the frozen roads in Minnesota; the hills were less good, the icy roads, perhaps a little better. Sometimes we could even ice skate.
You are Brave Juan!LOL!! Hard to tell who had more fun,Dad or Pete?We woke up Friday with 3 inches but mostly melted off by Saturday. Our son loves playing in the snow ,guess it's a boy thing. What great memories.Don't forget the hot coco, afterwards, mom! Thanks for sharing Juan and Pete .Stay safe Brown Family, kutos!

We just added 2" of fresh snow to the mountain, let the plowing begin and keep those roads good and slick. We have a hard freeze in the morning on tap for the next couple of days. Let the races commence. I haven't seen flying weather like this in years.
Back in the 60s we tied these and aluminum saucers to the back of our neighbors VW Beetle and he'd pull us down roads. When we got older we'd just squat down and hold on to the back bumper of cars. We called it bumper skiing. Just something to do in winter Michigan. Prolly laws against doing that now. Safety or something.
After several deep blankets of snow buried my town - the thick dark sky has transformed into a crystal blue invitation to play. Best Dad
This will stay with Pete forever
Great job Dad....memory making is the best.
Excellent. You have two lucky kids. (And wife).
Greetings from Oswego county, New York. I take for granted how much fun snow can be. Thanks for the reminder.
Juan. Reminds me of my childhood in the 70's
Same here, only mine was in the 60's.
Lot of the same here!
Yep I was a teenager in the late 70's it was epic for snow and cold on the east coast. Many of our low temp records that still stand today were set in '77 and '78. That was the widest smile!
There is nothing more beautiful on this earth than a child's smile. You are truly blessed Mr. Browne (and Mrs. Browne). Thank you for sharing.
Hahaha Juan was having more fun than the kids.. I was waiting for Pete to shout KABLAMMO!!

Oh yes it sure does .

My smile was just as wide. It's not often that we get these perfect conditions for the flexible flyer.
Memories playing with dad...priceless.🛷☃️❄
brings back the old days.
Can't have much more fun than that. Brings back a lot of very old memories.
That brings back memories we'd stay out all day warm up for a while and go back out living in a hilly neighborhood thanks For The Memories Juan
Oh man, does watching that ever bring back the memories! We had a big road hill just down the street from us back in Michigan that was absolutely perfect for the Flexible Flyers. That looks totally awesome.......................
Takes me back Juan. Thanks. Good job Pete.
Pete's fearless, just like his Daddy!! Trusting child! Thanks, Juan, brought back a lot of nice memories!
If you Can't Trust Your Parents then Who CAN YOU TRUST ????
Love Pete's grin ... this is why we live, isn't it!? ☺️❤️
So AWESOME!!! That's what it's all about! Making memories. Pete was having such a great time! To bad Norman Rockwell wasn't there to capture it!
It’s 0330 and in sitting here with a HUGE smile, giggling like a child! That was not only fun, it was a major memory knocker from when I was a kid & we’d go up to Butte Meadows to our family cabin to sled and tube! It was SUCH a blast! Much obliged B family!

Precious moments, YOU'RE the Dad EVERY kid wishes they'd had!
Born in SD but raised in MN, been here my whole life. I remember sledding as a kid and loved it. Glad to see you got the chance to do this!
"Oh what fun it is to ride" Thank you for the memory!
That was fun !!! Loved it when Pete was on your back. Great memory for father and son !! 1:21 is THE picture !!
Been well over 50 years since the last time time I rode one of those sleds Juan! Great smiles for both you and your young son. But you may as well head right into the intro of the "better" sledding for Pete: aka the snow mobile :) -Bob...
THAT Juan is some real quality time with Pete!! Great Dad!

Sometimes, Juan, your 'inner child' is 100% on the exterior -- like this Flexible Flyer adventure with Pete! What fun!
I remember them “Flyer Sleds 🛷 “ when I was a Youngster👍🏼👍🏼 LOTS of FUN👏👏👏😁😁...Juan..doin it with Cars 🚘 in mind coming down the Road...YIKES😯😯

I love how you are always testing your kids education and spending quality time with them. Not enough parents these days do either of them.

yep a childhood memory...Cleaning the rust off runners...
That brings back long ago memories. Thanks
Awesome, Juan, great that you have perfect conditions at your place and we have snow in the California mountains!! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the great road trip
Just awesome Juan. Brings back lots of memories. Spent many hours and miles sledding on mine. Lots of fun.
“Get the kids out here” to test the sled? You are the kid, Juan. Love the fun. Kid’s growing fast, spend as much time as you can with them. Wax the runners.
Great. I still have mine from 1960. Good times.
you gotta be one of the coolest dads !! thats some great stuff !!
Flexible flyers are so much fun..!! Look at the smile on Juan's face...LOL. Back in the 1970s we would go behind an elementary school that was on a hill. I had one of those sleds while goring up in Denver, CO. What a blast!
I'm 55 and I've never, as we say in the tropics of Australia, 'been to the snow'. That looked like awesome fun, Juan. Very cool! (oops, I punned).
That was great. Glad you all had a good time. Nothing like sledding with your kids. You will always have those memories.
Love it! Kids at all ages!
Thanks for the memories Juan! I had a Flexible Flyer with a chrome bumper. Sure was a beauty!
Excellent! FF introduced the chrome bumper in 1955.
Better get a cattle guard for your face. Lol. Classic time with family. God has blessed you!
Who was having the most fun Pete or Juan I think I will pick Juan just a big kid LOL.
That was the sled I had as a kid too, back in the 60's. Thanks for triggering memories! My goodness the area is beautiful in the winter!! I was enjoying the setting as you recorded too. I thought we were going to see some drone shots too. That would be cool!
right on!... memories!
Juan,
Great fun - thanks for sharing!
God bless
Paul
HA! That looked like an absolute blast! Pete sure was having fun - what a smile! 😀
I'll never forget my first trip on our Flexible Flyer when I was a kid. Conditions were rarely good in MA for that sled, so I never really liked it much ... that was, until this winding trail through the woods into the neighbor's backyard flash froze overnight! I think I wore that sled out that day! It was like being on the Alpine Slide up in NH - had total control (except for stopping, of course, LOL!!), and was blistering fast! 👍👍

That sure brings back memories. I walked up a road that had about a 30 degree tilt that was over a block long. Man was that a wild ride at 10 years old!!
Thats it, to really enjoy a sled you need that right there.A long ice run. Great share Grandpa
er, Pete's his son...
Awesome.
Juan, letting your inner child come out. Looks like you had a great time. Good vids and wish you the best.
Brent
Reminds me of my childhood in the 60's! Thanks Juan.
Good Job Dad! A Memory your son will have forever
Brought back memories we used to drive to the top of Bedient hill in WNY and sled down the snow/ice packed road. The ride was over 1/2 mile and the sight line was pure so the risk of being run over was nearly zero. LOL Hop in the cars and ride back up again and again. Ah the good ole days!
That sled is so swift!!
You walk home too! Lol that was Scary Fun!
This is so great! Thanks for taking me back to the day.
Great stuff Juan. Unfortunately here in PA the novelty has long worn off as we have a load of snow with ice under and on top!
Only problem with sledding is for every bit of downhill, the longer the walk coming back!
Great memories for Pete and Julie-Anne. :)
I remember when I took my boys on the flexible flyer lot of fun.But we have to pack the snow first by running up and down the hill.
Sure miss those times.
yea hi from across the pond, UK, have been following your posts I guess for the past two years, hope you don't mind my saying "you are one hell of an intelligent, fun loving good bloke".kind regards to you sir and your family. david
Haa! Thanks David!
Geez Dad, I didnt know there was a quiz. Actually there's probably always a quiz so he's used to it.
He's a good teacher - bet his wife is too!
Great to see your family having a ball!
Great fun to watch.
That's a Good Dad right there!
After several deep blankets of snow buried my town - the thick dark sky has transformed into a crystal blue invitation to play. The Oroville photography equipment has captured a day Pete will never forget. Thanks for sharing the fun! (ps, Oroville's elevation is only four days away from the 813 ft trunnion gate level. Current elevation 796 ft, which is a real spike. When do they pull the trigger - 860? The spillway may get a christening in 2019 yet.)
Great! Thx for posting! WTG Pete!
