- Employees at Fosters Freeze in Lemoore are out of a job. Assistant General Manager Monica Navarro says the owner had previously told her the $20 minimum wage increase for fast food workers was going to be really hard on him but did not say he was closing.

Meant for young and retired. Now trying to force a "liveable wage" onto businesses that are min wage entry level jobs it's not gonna work. It raises prices, increases EVERYTHING, and makes those who have a trade and and worked their ass off to make a better wage have a lower income. Increased mediocrity except for the elites. Money doesn’t come from thin air, so when you force owners to pay someone more, that money has to come from somewhere. No business will take that loss because businesses have to make money. No one goes to work for free or you starve. Businesses do not eat the losses, they pass it on in different ways. This is one of the ways here.

@@Skooozle the panera exemption only applies if you were making and selling bread BEFORE the law was passed.....how convenient.....and that is a great point about the number of locations I wonder if Fosters offered some franchisees the chance to walk away or to get out of their agreement AND still be able to open another restaurant in that location as long as it was not burgers.....Fosters gets under the 60 location part and the owner gets some cash to spruce up their building and open as a "mom and pop" that is well under 60 locations....and they both skirt the law

The tradeoff is that the average taxation rate is well over 50%, because working people are paying for a much higher percentage of unemployed over there. BTW, gasoline is between $8-10/gallon, so you probably won't be driving to work if you're a fast food worker.

Actually you do under the WARN act if you meet the minimum amount of employees. That being said, out of respect for his employees he should have given them some fair warning at least so they don’t waste their time driving into work.

Severence pay? I thought she was a manager..... The average mcdonalds franchise makes less than a 10% profit from gross sales. So increase the wages by 25% and wonder why the business cant stay open? That doesnt make sense. Alot of restaurants lose money by doing that. And if i owned a business like that in California, id probably close it down too. Why go into debt, what would be the point?
Could not have said it better myself. I have a woodworking shop and I primarily do everything myself, when I need extra help I pay &20.00 and up depending on experience. I do not eat the cost of paying them that is figured in on labor cost the customer pays and that is explained up front before any work is done. Evidently there are some that do not think the increased costs of labor are not passed on the the consumer

Usually they cut these interviews down and used the best answers in a shorter segment on the air. They ask follow-up questions to cover the same ground to make sure the facts are correct, who handed out the checks, who changed the locks, etc etc. Then they need to check on the facts and verify the story with the people mentioned in interview. They’ll call the locksmith and ask him when the store owner called him, etc etc.
She's also very biased and not neutral at all in her interview and blames the owner for everything. Only a moron would think that a small business owner looks forward to closing their business

The owner/franchisee probably lost whole lot of money on Foster Freeze franchise. He had enough. Offer unemployment? Unemployment payments are done by the Edd. The owner paid into unemployment benefits, I’m sure he won’t contest unemployment filings by workers.

I have a friend who is an accountant.She married a guy she had a long distance relationship with. He had a small business involving oil drilling equipment, with a partner and a handful of employees. Once she got in there and started doing the books, she told him there wasn’t enough profit, and he needed to close the business, get a job, and “earn us a living”. 😆
more than likely what will happen is the owner will wait a week and open up as just a random burger place or they will wait until any franchise agreement runs out that prevents them from dropping the franchise and going independent and then reopen.....or there is a chance they have someone lined up to rent the building and equipment that will not be a "national franchise" and will not have to pay the $20 an hour and the owner will just become a property manager and move on with life

@@Skooozle Half the Highschool kids we hired at our stores weren't worth half minimum wage and robbed us Blind out of the till. A few made it Big Time in life's endeavors, and you could tell the first day they were on the job, who would win, and who would fail in life.Still in touch after 50 years with some of our employees.

Because they do not have a mastery of the subject, they cannot teach a student who is struggling, they do not have the ability to show the practical application of the material to make it relevant, and they cannot demonstrate the material from different angles to get through to a student.
Business owner dont need to give out a notice to layoff. Business owners are losing their livelihood. You kids can get another job pretty easy.

since when does a job offer unemployment? that's always been the responsibility of the employee to file. I wouldn't expect a fast food joint to offer a severance package. where do these ppl think they work...a tech company??! honestly I never knew this chain existed.

The notice to anybody with any common Sense was as soon as newsome signed this law for $20 minimum wage you were going to be losing your job on April 1st
very smart on the owners part. first of all it's not illegal. owner does not have to give you "two weeks notice". It is an "at will" employment contract meaning employee can leave and owner can fire, "effective immediately". never tell them ahead of time because they will steal everything and not care from that point on. Changing the locks and having someone there to distribute the final checks. Very smart owner!
They normally get paid for 2 weeks which is why they give 2 week notice better to have them working for 2 weeks than get 2 weeks free pay not working.
You can't blame the owners, blame the officials that have plotted against their constituents who vote for them into office. They get to keep their jobs while you get to loose yours.

A lot of small businesses work on a razor thin profit margin and giving their entire staff a 25% pay increase would be detrimental. Can’t blame the owner one bit. I’m sure he didn’t make this decision lightly.

If Foster's Freeze closes 3 locations, reducing to 59 stores, they can revert to the $16 statewide minimum wage . . . . Don't be surprised if the owner of this location was "paid" to close it.
But they may be franchises, not corporate owned.

When I worked in fast food, the people working there were mostly High School and College Students. Except for the managers, no one was looking to make a career out of it. I am pleased that this young woman is working towards another career.
I guess that it could have been worse. He could have asked her to lay everyone off, and then she would be laid off by the owner.
i had all 3 grand kids with me yesterday they asked for McDonalds for lunch for 4 of us and one was a happy meal it was 48.00 for lunch i’m sorry but McDonalds is not worth that amount so no more McDonalds .

This young lady has no clue the cost of running a business. Job security, no one has job security unless your the one signing the checks!
