Fun fact about West Coast: before Dan Auerbach came into the picture, Lana went through multiple producers trying to find the right one who saw what she saw for the track, but (foolishly) no one was into it because of how it's a faster tempo in the verses and slows down in the chorus, which was basically unheard of. But she knew that's what she wanted and she wasn't going to change her (ever-so-powerful) mind, so then she found Dan Auerbach who took a listen and jumped on it. @@Matthew-ij3zm she's probably got the darkest lyrics of any woman singer I've heard. If there's anyone else a lil darker than that I would love to know. All her songs are about abuse and toxic love on her part and others 😂😂
@vintage 725 RIGHT? People need to open their eyes. No one is perfect and if they have some minor issues they’re still creating this beautiful art that you are enjoying. But some people totally ignore the art cause the guy creating the music isn’t “boyfriend material”
Well for me, Lana Del Rey has her own kind of genre. She makes art like these that paints you a story, takes you into her world, gets you high while feeling raw and real at the same time. She makes you feel and remember things you didn't know that you have. She's timeless and gets better and better everytime. Many would say that she's a queen, I think she's a goddess.
This album carries so much memory and nostalgia for me. When it came out, my best friend and I decided we were going to listen to the whole thing from start to finish. We were smoking weed and drinking wine in her room, candles lit, just vibing so hard and dancing to it all lmfao. You might think you can't dance to this bc it's slow, but you really can. It's v sensual lol.
That’s basically my Friday and Sunday nights, except I dance around to Lana while drinking wine and having dinner. Then I run a warm bubble bath with candles, put Lana on and unwind with my wine. I also live in a condo so my neighbors hear my music pretty well. They check in if on Sunday they don’t hear Lana.
Florida Kilos is one of my favorite song of hers. It encapsulates that reflective and melancholy feeling you sometimes get at dawn in a warm summer after staying up all night. Lyrically it's not on the same height as her other music but its a great vibe.
One of my favorite quotes from Lana is, “I have slept with a lot guys in the industry, but none of them helped me get my record deals. Which is annoying.” FMWUTTT is her laughing at the idea that people (including other female artists) think she got to where she is through sleeping with industry people
Lmao I love her. It’s annoying how when Ariana grande makes fun of herself in her lyrics people call her queen and shit but Lana but dragged. Pisses me off
So she slept with them for nothing. But don't forget that she comes from a rich family and lives in America. Also having talent, skills, beauty and charm helps.
I'm a metalhead. I play bass in a metal band. Lana was my second most listened to artist on Spotify last year. I already liked summertime sadness and born to die, but what really made me listen to her more was a line in Highly Suspect's "Serotonia" - "I'll get stoned all night with Lana". That was when I realised I am actually living that, as I was getting stoned and listened to those two songs on repeat.
i just checked out that song & realized i had already listened to MCID because of their collab with Nothing But Thieves but holy fuck, the rest of their music is so good. thanks for re-introducing me to a different side of them and this incredible song.
I hope Lana can see this reaction especially with what she’s going through with people attacking her on the internet right now. Im sure she’s going to be happy knowing non-stan appreciates ultraviolence
Imagine listening to Old Money standing on an aisle of a slightly dark cathedral while rays of sunlight slowly seep through the colorful stained glass and reflect on the gold detailing of the pillars and walls. Imagine how angelic the acoustics in there would be.
The track black beauty is about Lana painting and wearing black to compliment the depression her partner is facing she’s truly an incredible songwriter
@Barbie You literally went to that girl's instagram just to comment how her head is too small😂😂😂 and how she is editing her pictures too much, i mean Dude, did your parents love you at all😂 do you have any friends?😂😂😂 Where is your life😂 do you have it at all lol... And that little language is my language and Tamara's language. You answered, cope with it.
i’m not an emotional person but when i listen to her songs i can’t handle it - how is it possible to feel so many emotions at once? is it nostalgic maybe? isn’t nostalgia just happiness and sadness at the same time? i can’t explain it but that’s how i feel
Ikr, her songs make me feel so many emotions at once, sadness, loneliness, happiness, nostalgic and out of body experience. Idk how to explain but it calms me
when you listen to honeymoon you’ll notice how her song the blackest day breaks down the 5 stages of grief 1. Denial and Isolation in the first verse 2. Anger in the Bridge 3. Bargaining in the second verse 4. Depression in the Chorus 5. Acceptance in the Outro she’s a lyrical genius
@@Forlfir That's the beautiful thing about well written lyricism and poetry; it can be interpreted in different ways. I wouldn't be surprised if Lana had this intention, she can be very clever in her writing.
I still come back once a month or even less to watch this album reaction again. Love the fact you point out that Pretty When You Cry is done in one take and “Don't say you need me when, You leave and you leave again. I'm stronger than all my men, Except for you.. Don't say you need me if you live last, you're leaving, I can't do it, I can't do it. But you do it best” - is also free styled on the spot too. Not many people point that out or even know that.
Your ability to catch lyrics and break them down as well as pick apart the melodies and tempo changes is seriously underrated. Watching you listen to her music for the first time brings me back to me listening to them for the first time and it's been such a comfort to not only reminisce but have you share the enthusiasm. Haha I just wanted to come say I really appreciate what you do, dude. Keep it up! 😁😊
It's amazing to know that her label refused to release this album thinking it wouldn't perform well because of how different it was. It wasn't until they played it to Adele's producer - who thought the album was amazing - that the label agreed to release it. Ironically Ultraviolence sold much more than expected and debuted at no 1 on the Billboard 200 with more than 180k albums sold in the US in its first week.
When she is saying shes a "sad girl" shes saying that she is pathetic and stupid, not literally sad. Our queen always having a deeper meaning to everything.......the way she serves each and every single day
"Black Beauty" was supposed to be one of the headlining tracks on Ultraviolence but it got leaked months before the album was set to come (she has had hundreds of old songs leak as well). I know that had to be really crushing for her, but I'm still really glad she put it out as a bonus track!
I love how you emphasize how Lana as genius lyricist. I honestly see you as one of the most transparent reactor of her not like the other channels who’re obviously doing it for views, no wonder people have demanded for full reaction video! Love thiss man!!🥰

Black beauty makes me think of my mom and dads relationship. Dad was an addict with clinical depression but my mom is a little hippie ray of sunshine but after 18 years with him her light really dimmed. My dad loved her until the day he died but could never reach her because of his issues and they ended up divorced. She remarried he did not.
Every time I miss feeling what it's like listening to Lana for the first time, I come back to your channel. Thank you for giving us timeless reaction videos Jon. You've come so far since I started watching you a few years ago. Super proud!
Jon, first the Mac series now Lana. My two favorite artists. And this is by far my favorite album of all time. I remember so vividly Lana dropping West Coast and Shades of Cool as singles. I remember the day this album dropped. And all of your reactions mimicked mine then. And somehow, unlike any other album I’ve ever loved, I still have the same reactions listening to it today. It’s truly one of those works that I can put on and fully transcend back into the exact memories that made up those first 100 listens. Truly a masterpiece: instrumentally, lyrically, spiritually.
I love how if he starts talking, he rewinds it so he doesn’t miss anything. A lot of reactors talk through the great parts and never comment on what they talked through! Lol
I don't know what is with ppl and Honeymoon, I guess it is a matter of personal taste. I love all of Lana music, but for me Honeymoon is my bible! There isn't a single song that doesn't hit me like a lightning right in the feels. Can't wait for that reaction, Jon!!!
Lana said in an interview she wont sing (he hit me and it felt like a kiss anymore, she said: "I don’t like it. I don’t. I don’t sing it. I sing 'Ultraviolence' but I don’t sing that line anymore. Having someone be aggressive in a relationship was the only relationship I knew."
She should apply that logic to Cola as well. Sing the song, but skip "Harvey's in the sky" , instead of stopping completely performing the song. But hey, we have UA-cam, cds vinyls etc. Same goes to Haley(Paramore) instead of not singing Misery Business, just don't say "once a whore"
Lana stopped singing the "he hit me..." lyrics when she's singing Ultraviolence because she doesn't relate to them anymore. She usually turns her head away from the mic and let the fans sing it for her. Here at 00:48 ua-cam.com/video/7VQXw9kcuoo/v-deo.html
Denis Breimann but the song isn’t about glamourising the relationship it’s about the gaslighting of the victim so how can she not relate to it any more? Does that mean she now knows and feels like domestic violence is bad? I don’t understand lol :/
@@madeleinegibson1650maybe OP is wrong, and she just doesn't sing it anymore because it became to heavy for her (maybe?) As someone who's' gone trought an abusive relationship, for me at least, things feels less serious when it happens, and when time progresses and you think about it, it really hits you (lol) about how inacceptable it was, and you don't feel confortable talking about it in such a beautiful way. I don't know, just speculating ( I can sing the song tho, maybe because it was a long time ago and I don't really wanna associate the song with him, Lana's too precious to mix with its poison in my ming)
Watching your video for the first time and this made me extremely happy. So ecstatic I found a UA-camr who I can visually see and feel understands the mix of emotions and deep level of transcendence Lana and Auerbach's production of music provides. Thank you for this beautiful video
i’m so glad you liked this album, the american deluxe version ends with “is this happiness” which it’s such a powerful, sad song, and (i cant remember which country’s) version of the deluxe album ends with “flipside” which is SUCH a great song as well... hope to see a reaction to those two also...
As soon as I saw that you listened to Born to Die, I was hoping you'd carry on and listen to the other ones as well! I'm so excited for you, I wish I could listen to them for the first time again
I just the lyrics of Ultraviolence and I love how "I can hear the sirens" can refer to an ambulance or the mythical creatures that look and sound beautiful but kill their preys (because the next lyric is about hearing violins, which supports the idea of delusion)
@@EatyourfaceThomas Part of me thinks it's all because of God Knows I Tried. Once I reach that song, my mind starts to go a bit numb or blank, everything starts melding together.

Fun fact about The Other Woman: the melody and as originally sang by Nina Simone it suggests the poetic voice takes the place of the wife while in Lana Del Rey’s version under the context of the album and the changes she makes on the melody and her own voice, she reimagines the song in the place of the mistress. I always loved this song because it shows Lana’s ability to convey a completely different meaning without even changing the original lyrics

@@Matthew-ij3zm she's probably got the darkest lyrics of any woman singer I've heard. If there's anyone else a lil darker than that I would love to know. All her songs are about abuse and toxic love on her part and others 😂😂
"I feel like we've always been talking to each other through our music. She is the girl in my music, and I am the guy in her music." - The Weeknd
That's so cute omg
Aw
Wait the Weeknd is abusive ?
@vintage 725 RIGHT? People need to open their eyes. No one is perfect and if they have some minor issues they’re still creating this beautiful art that you are enjoying. But some people totally ignore the art cause the guy creating the music isn’t “boyfriend material”
I love them together. Their collabs are pure magic
PERIOD
This is it! U nailed it all… all the feelings 🙌🙌
your statement is still valid! (december 2022)
That sounds like a true coming-of-age movie moment lmaoooo i‘m jealous
That sounds amazing... I'm sure you can recall those momenths with happiness
Super jealous, i wanna be friends with you hahahahaha
That’s basically my Friday and Sunday nights, except I dance around to Lana while drinking wine and having dinner. Then I run a warm bubble bath with candles, put Lana on and unwind with my wine. I also live in a condo so my neighbors hear my music pretty well. They check in if on Sunday they don’t hear Lana.
my first time listening to the entire album was on a new york subway. its so cool to see the exact locations she’s referencing
Florida Kilos is one of my favorite song of hers. It encapsulates that reflective and melancholy feeling you sometimes get at dawn in a warm summer after staying up all night. Lyrically it's not on the same height as her other music but its a great vibe.
Is so underrated!!! Is an amazing song
One of my favs!
You described that so perfectly!!! Agree!!!!♥️😍😍😍🙌🏾
it's literally about cocaine stfu
Florida Kilos is soooo soooo good. Another level.
@@snowhitechristmas maybe she slept with them because... I don't know... maybe she wanted to?
@@anafranciscaa.c.3864 yes, yes we know, figures there's gonna be reply like yours.
Snowhite Christmas i would hope she had skills lol
I'm a metalhead. I play bass in a metal band. Lana was my second most listened to artist on Spotify last year. I already liked summertime sadness and born to die, but what really made me listen to her more was a line in Highly Suspect's "Serotonia" - "I'll get stoned all night with Lana". That was when I realised I am actually living that, as I was getting stoned and listened to those two songs on repeat.
Marry me xD
i just checked out that song & realized i had already listened to MCID because of their collab with Nothing But Thieves but holy fuck, the rest of their music is so good. thanks for re-introducing me to a different side of them and this incredible song.
I hope Lana can see this reaction especially with what she’s going through with people attacking her on the internet right now. Im sure she’s going to be happy knowing non-stan appreciates ultraviolence
Am I dreaming or it seems you’re gonna do “first time hearing” of every Lana’s album? Because if that’s the case... I already love you.
The fact that he gets to hear her best album for the first time...... IM VRYING AND JEALOUS
# a2ad9c you mean honeymoon? yeah he is
Imagine listening to Old Money standing on an aisle of a slightly dark cathedral while rays of sunlight slowly seep through the colorful stained glass and reflect on the gold detailing of the pillars and walls. Imagine how angelic the acoustics in there would be.

you just named my favorite unreleased songs of her

Say yes to heaven is so good
Queen of the Gas Station, Kinda Outta Luck, Making Out, and Backfire as well imo.

I will forever believe Shades of Cool should've been a James Bond song.
Preach baby darlin
That and the beginning of body electric
And 24, I am convinced she wrote that with the Bond franchise in mind.
@@hannaheve868 it was literally made for the 24th bond film, they picked sam smith instead:(
@@conordoeseverything i think the song u are talking about is 24 from Honeymoon
The track black beauty is about Lana painting and wearing black to compliment the depression her partner is facing she’s truly an incredible songwriter

i’m not an emotional person but when i listen to her songs i can’t handle it - how is it possible to feel so many emotions at once? is it nostalgic maybe? isn’t nostalgia just happiness and sadness at the same time? i can’t explain it but that’s how i feel
I feel the same way. Her songs, this album especially, hits me every time. Chills. Tears. Exactly what you described.
Ikr, her songs make me feel so many emotions at once, sadness, loneliness, happiness, nostalgic and out of body experience. Idk how to explain but it calms me
when you listen to honeymoon you’ll notice how her song the blackest day breaks down the 5 stages of grief
1. Denial and Isolation in the first verse
2. Anger in the Bridge
3. Bargaining in the second verse
4. Depression in the Chorus
5. Acceptance in the Outro
she’s a lyrical genius
I don't think that's intended it's people reading too much into her lyrics
@@Forlfir That's the beautiful thing about well written lyricism and poetry; it can be interpreted in different ways. I wouldn't be surprised if Lana had this intention, she can be very clever in her writing.
Blackest day is the best song on the album imo and the album itself is tragically underrated
Your reaction to 'west coast' is honestly how I react every time I hear it
Me too hahaha it just gets better
Every fucking time. It's just incredible.
The fact that Pretty When You Cry was completely freestyle is proof that Lana is a god
OMFG I did not know this. Iconic.

Can't wait for him to do some J-rock reactions (but really, do Rina Sawayama)
Keep it up! 😁😊
DragonRadio also does amazing lyric analysis of LDR songs😊👍
I don't know why or how,but watching you react to Lana is probably my fav thing during quarantine
Is it offensive of me to feel like Lana could make the ultimate James Bond theme song? Probably. But she would, right?
Jelle Jelsma her song “24” from the Honeymoon album was almost the track for spectere, it sound very much like a James Bond song :)
She has perfect voice for Bond movie
If only she did it instead of fuckin Billie Eilish
She would have been perfect. Her aesthetic has always been very old soul, vintage, soft and poetic.
it’s absolutely bullocks luv! one day...

"Black Beauty" was supposed to be one of the headlining tracks on Ultraviolence but it got leaked months before the album was set to come (she has had hundreds of old songs leak as well). I know that had to be really crushing for her, but I'm still really glad she put it out as a bonus track!

I've listened to this record since it first came out and the fact that I still get goosebumps when I listen to it..
I woke up this morning thinking “Jon must’ve listened to ultraviolence by now and the video should be out” and it was! Keep the Lana reactions coming!
That's really sad :(
She should apply that logic to Cola as well. Sing the song, but skip "Harvey's in the sky" , instead of stopping completely performing the song. But hey, we have UA-cam, cds vinyls etc. Same goes to Haley(Paramore) instead of not singing Misery Business, just don't say "once a whore"
Snowhite Christmas sometimes songs r just too painful to sing. i see where ur coming from tho
I mean, she said that, but then she went right back to singing it, so... lol
Lana stopped singing the "he hit me..." lyrics when she's singing Ultraviolence because she doesn't relate to them anymore. She usually turns her head away from the mic and let the fans sing it for her.
Here at 00:48
ua-cam.com/video/7VQXw9kcuoo/v-deo.html
Denis Breimann but the song isn’t about glamourising the relationship it’s about the gaslighting of the victim so how can she not relate to it any more? Does that mean she now knows and feels like domestic violence is bad? I don’t understand lol :/
@@madeleinegibson1650maybe OP is wrong, and she just doesn't sing it anymore because it became to heavy for her (maybe?)
As someone who's' gone trought an abusive relationship, for me at least, things feels less serious when it happens, and when time progresses and you think about it, it really hits you (lol) about how inacceptable it was, and you don't feel confortable talking about it in such a beautiful way. I don't know, just speculating
( I can sing the song tho, maybe because it was a long time ago and I don't really wanna associate the song with him, Lana's too precious to mix with its poison in my ming)

Lana really served a 1-2-3-4 Punch with Ultraviolence, Shades of Cool, Brooklyn Baby and West Coast.

I just the lyrics of Ultraviolence and I love how "I can hear the sirens" can refer to an ambulance or the mythical creatures that look and sound beautiful but kill their preys (because the next lyric is about hearing violins, which supports the idea of delusion)
The best way to describe honeymoon is like a James Bond theme song, with spicy undertones. Like if a James Bond movie was set in Spain.
Italy would probably be more accurate but YES. 24 is soooo perfect for a Bond theme that it feels illegal that it’s not one already

Hope you don’t stop here! Honeymoon is a totally different vibe but still amazing and then Lust for Life and Norman F***ing Rockwell can’t be missed either. She’s an unbelievable artist.
