A quick family visit to Jaipur - reflecting on Indian and Finnish family values

- As we were bound to leave our Kerala home behind and travel for work for the whole month of June, we decided to use the opportunity to also go to visit Annika's grandparents, Dadi and Dadu in Jaipur for a good family time together. Annika also got to meet her bua after a long time and play with her cousin bhaiya who is quickly growing up just like Annika. Enjoying all this family time also inspired me to ponder on Indian and Finnish family values and their possible differences, and share my thoughts on this video!

My name is Johanna North. I’m a Finnish woman travelling in India since 2016. In 2019 I married my Indian husband and we moved to the state of Kerala in southern India, where we are still living. In 2021 we welcomed our baby girl into this world. On this channel I share videos on blending our Finnish-Indian family life, culture, food and travel mostly in India, and sometimes in Finland too.

Annika's dadi and dadu got her a new clothing set on their latest visit. By the Indian kids' sizing, it's for kids aged 5-6 years. It's NOT too big :'D
All cleaning staff can now take a break …Annika and Yug are here!😄 I can't get over how sensibly and naturally Annika has taken to being big sister, from bossing around to pacifying when things get out of hand 😍 Your Chai time always reminds of mine with my family and ofcourse it's so much more than just about the Chai ❤️
I also loved seeing how she was trying to teach new skills to Yug 🥰 they’re like two peas in a pod. When you put them next to each other you could easily think that they’re actual brother and sister, both Sangeeta’s children 😅❤
So lovely to see Annika speak both Finnish, English and Hindi!!!
Great to see the cousins bonding and sharing stuff in the house. Anika is getting very talkative esp in her new found Hindi vocab and with supreme self confidence! Good to see her interest in cleanliness despite being in a clean home. Do consider sending her for dance classes, she seems to have natural rhythm to sway and move. I can never forget her hilarious natu-natu😂
We’ll get her into some organised hobbies maybe once she also starts playschool and has better skills to follow instructions 😊 if she still is into dancing at that age we’ll surely take her to classes. Advice from many friends with children who train in classical dance is to only start around age 5 😊
Kids fascinations with brooms and utensils is so universal.. and of course playing outdoors. I adore your loving MIL and also your efforts to visit and
blend families in every chance possible and sure they all must be appreciative of you. ❤️🥰
So true! My mom has lots of old photos of me trying to do the dishes and vacuuming. Basically it meant that I kept dropping my pacifier in the soap water and we had this portable vacuum cleaner and I kept really banging it on the hard wood floor :'D

Seeing both of them play with the brooms, it just reminded me of my childhood. As my parents observed me, they understood my love for sweeping and they gifted me a tiny little broom. Really happy to see Annika grow and its nice to listen to her speak in her cute little voice❤
What a nice little gift! We also have a broom designated to Annika at home 😊❤ i think lots of small kids love cleaning, even I did as a toddler! Too bad that most of us lose that enthusiasm when we grow up though… 😅

I've been watching your vlogs since long and I must say that yours almost have a lyrical quality to them. I love to watch your daughter grow up. She is beautiful and above everything else such an empathic soul at such a tender age. I tell you she's an old soul. She rekindles in me the joy and bliss of being a father to a daughter, which alas I'm not. May you all be happy!
I definitely love being a mom to a daughter, and even more so Vinod loves being a dad to one! ❤ but i wouldve loved having a son too, and wouldve thought it a privilege to raise a boy into a man 😊

I think it’s often easier for me to balance with indian culture though, as the restrictions that are placed on many Indian women are never applied to me really as a foreigner and having such open-minded, respectful in-laws 😊 i have profound respect for the indian women who do struggle with some aspects of their own culture, as would I if I ever had to face such challenges 🙏 i’ve been lucky to only ever have pretty minor issues, like I can’t dress in whatever western way i might like in more conservative areas or I get stared at in many places due to my skin colour

Vähän kun serkukset kasvaa niin Ai että miten kivoja leikkejä heillä tuleekaan. 😍 Itselläni oli kaks melko saman ikäistä serkkua ja mummolassa aina leikittiin, naurettiin, riideltiin ja halattiin. Dear Johanna, I admire your courage that you want to slowly address Western family values. But I'm not sure, how in-depth people from Indian cultural and fanatically religious contexts might understand your points... South Asians have preconceived ideas about the family values of the West. They would easily fall for like; Westerners would randomly get divorced, they have sex before marriage, Western women are opinionated... the list could be endless.
I'm sure, the West also have preconceived ideas about the East. It's a never-ending battlefield. All the very 👌

Wonderful video Johanna. Yes family values are worldwide. In terms of nursing homes they are also worldwide and do exist in india as it's necessary to have them as family members are not nurses. Yes Indian family values are great at times but believe me iv seen families hit their kids with a stick and shout at their children. Abuse that would need to be reported to the authorities in the West. Also the emotional manipulation to get married and have children. I had to admit it is apparent in India but India is changing.
In my original script I was talking about the differences in much more detail, like the nursing homes and yes I find those very necessary too, as like you said family members rarely are qualified professional caretakers, and might not be able to offer care to such an extent which might often be required when younger family members would be working regardless their gender and also busy taking care of their kids. I think abusive families are world round, and while hitting and slapping might still be relatively common in India, it was common even in a country like Finland in the 90s early 00s. Now less so as it has been made illegal. Like you said, India is changing too and mindsets change quite slowly.

I most likely wont be posting realtime videos at any point, other than during a special holiday (like Diwali, Christmas) or a birthday, but maybe a month apart at the closest 😊 one more video from June is coming, but i’m not stressing out about the editing since Vinod’s work is really busy and i’m prioritising Annika, family time and my health currently 😊
I started drinking tea from 6th or 7th standard, but annika, starting from now..😮
She just has a little dash of chai in an otherwise full cup of milk, just to give the milk a bit of colour so she can think she’s drinking chai too 😊 she doesn’t really like to drink milk otherwise

Is there pressure for conceiving a boy? Are little girls required to dress as boys to attract conceiving a boy? Is this an Indian tradition...help ❤
There are no such traditions now .maybe some 50 years back people preferred boy over girl. Now no such thing
I wouldn't say pressure necessarily, but boys are preferred in some communities. People were sometimes offering us their blessings for a boy when I was pregnant for example. The birth of a son can be more celebrated and require lots of rituals in some families. I've also had some comments tell me to have another baby so we can have a son. But Vinod and I and both of our parents are extremely happy with a girl, and every extended family member and friend who has met Annika loves her.
We don't dress Annika as "a boy" nor are we wanting a boy, we just prefer more practical, unisex clothing and don't like most of the girls' clothing available, like lots of lace, frills, bows, unicorn prints and princess-y stuff. But Annika does wear dresses, pink and girlier things too.
