As someone who's already familiar with Matt's work, I think this is my new favorite interview of Matt. I love your energy together and all the anecdotes relating to martial arts.
I’ve heard this breakdown form Matt plenty of times elsewhere but your personality kept me engaged the whole time! And that’s saying a lot considering it’s almost 3 am and I’m fighting to stay awake till I finish the whole thing 😅😆
Found you from Matt's side of youtube. I just wanted to say this was a really enjoyable interview. I loved hearing your breakdown of the fundamentals of martial arts as it relates to language learning. Great video.
This is by far the best interview w/ Matt I've seen. You give him plenty of room to explain his concepts and add in really well with your martial arts concepts. Keep it up!
Honestly I've been following Matt's content for so long I know everything he's gonna say inside-out, but just something about the way you did this interview, your personality it makes for such an entertaining viewing experience. I loved all your analogies and parallels, personal insights, etc. Best of luck in your Portuguese journey!
"Tolerating Ambiguity" - of the many helpful concepts from this interview, this was #1 for me. It's so easy to focus on what you can't do or understand instead of celebrating what you can do or understand. And that frustration can easily lead to giving up. Thank you both for this useful conversation!
Yes, literally none of what you can't currently understand matters, like, at all. People stress over it, get discouraged, and some eventually quit, but if you understand what Matt is saying (it's 100% true BTW) then all you have to do is keep the exposure going and it'll eventually sort itself out. It is honestly the closest thing to magic I've ever experienced. The hard part is trusting the process, but if you can convince yourself that this approach works, and you stay at it, it'll work 100% of the time for 100% of people who are capable of language.
That was a very educating conversation, I really enjoyed listening to this. I See that you want watch anime. I highly reccommend kengan ashura its about mix martial arts and the animation is cool, and hajime no ippo this anime about boxing.
Hajime no Ippo is exceptional. An ode to boxing by people who know what they’re talking about (the creator owns a boxing gym and has followed the sport all his life). Based purely on various comments on UA-cam, it has brought a lot of people to boxing gyms around the world. It's also very educational
Based on my experience learning Brazilian Portuguese to an advanced level where I was often taken for a local, Pimsleur will of course do very little in terms of actual vocabulary acquisition but it's really helpful if you use it for accent training. That's just literally months worth of high-fidelity audio content for practicing your accent and that kickstarted my whole journey where first I was able to get myself perceived as a local (or, initially, someone from a different state in Brazil), but the hillbilly sort due to my then broken grammar and limited vocab. Which is still better than being treated as a foreigner as you get a lot of authentic exposure to their culture this way. All in all, Brazilians are so eager to communicate with people of any skill level in Portuguese that just living there for a few months will make you progress in leaps and bounds - something that imagine would never happen on its own in a country like Japan
I wonder how matt doesn't lose his mind having to diagloue tree so many conversations cause he always gets asked the same questions. He could probably give the big red dog example in his sleep.
Politicians do the same thing if you watch enough of their interviews. Japanese from zero interview with Matt was great when he unexpectedly had an answer to the ‘Big Red Dog’
he's getting better and better at interviews. One of his last ones with someone from LingQ I thought was so incredibly smooth. He answered everything in a clear and concise way yet still not being ingenuine or uninteresting
I'm learning English and I don't understand how you use the word "offset" that you use so many times in your speech. What does it mean? ... Thank you !!!
Think "venn diagram". The area in common I call "overlap". The area that is not in common I call "offset". I go into this concept in context in my book. Hope that helps!
I don’t understand if Matt is advocating pure immersion into stuff that you don’t understand of immersion into comprehenible input? Which is it Matt ???

This was an incredible interview! Not many people can really ask the right questions to get the most that Matt has to offer and you did that! Bravo!

You guys seem so different on the surface so it's cool to see how easily you two connected. Watching opposites connect so well is fun. Great video.

I spot Thomas Sowell in the background. Respect
one cut of the dead (yes, it's live action) is my favourite japanese movie
Muito legal, possivelmente a melhor entrevista com o Matt que eu já assisti.

It's the price for having powerful stuff to share. Also, I wouldn't underestimate the increased clarity of its delivery every new rep brings.

In this conversation, it means deviation, or a way that goes off what’s normal

Hi, can you ask Matt what chair he is using?
“They’re native language is their target language” 😂😂😂
"A lot of shit out there is SHIT. Honestly speaking, Chef's Kiss💋
I don’t understand if Matt is advocating pure immersion into stuff that you don’t understand of immersion into comprehenible input? Which is it Matt ???
i believe its immersion in whatever passively, while it concerns comprehensible input once you have a foundation
I would believe that he's half Japanese because of his eyes
Refold stage one prepares you for immersion. What a waste of time !!!
you were right about the AI (:
