Luca's perspective on how language learning sparks a whole process that molds us as better citizens of the world was very inspiring. It made me think of the many ways language makes us grow. Like how he said when it's not so much about you learning the language, but experiencing it and learning in that language instead.
Deliverate practice at a high level and creating the environment for the language plant to grow. Not wanting to force things out. Very eye opening things.
Matt made excellent questions, overall this interview is gold.

Excellent interview Matt. Clearly you were well prepared with your questions. You would ask him something and I would be like “Geeze that’s a good one” and be really interested in the answer. I’ve seen many Luca interviews and you actually took advantage of having such a fantastic language learner in front of you and didn’t just do the typical “So Luca, tell us how you start learning a language”. Nicely done man.

I watched the whole interview, and I couldn't be happier to listen to a very competent person like Luca. I've been studying italian for 3 years and currently I have an almost native level. I've spent a lot of time just listening to the language and watched tons of series and movies before I spoke to other people. Now I'm focusing on English, and I'm using the same strategy and a slightly different method to learn it. I truly believe that the fact that I have learned another language before I decided to learn the "important" language was crucial. Now I finally could understand how people actually acquire a new language. But as my grandpa used to say: "there's always something you don't know about something you think you know perfectly".

Looks like Matt's really starting to get the momentum via more and more cool collabs!
Edit: Now that he's had interviews with Dogen, Steve and Luca another couple of big name language-related channels I can think of for potential future collabs are Langfocus and Nativlang, though these two lean more towards linguistics than language acquisition.
Edit 2: Thanks Matt for this wonderful interview. You are really good at asking right questions among other things. Luca recounting how his language acquisition journey shifting from disorganised and hectic in the past to putting more emphasis on meditative and holistic approach sorta reminds me of Netero's training in HxH where he wound up spending less and less time doing his physical routine.

  • @Drakeblood97

I'm noticing one thing in particular that ties serial language learners together, that being empathy.
Empathy facilitates noticing and imitation of the language in how we produce vowel and consonant qualities, stress patterns, phrases that are natural, our external communication in general, and how convincing we sound.
However, empathy also facilitates our own internal communication, like mortar to stone, by consolidating our bits of experience with a language and binding it inextricably to our deepest emotions and experiences to create an identity. Fear, joy, love, sorrow, melancholy, boredom, the feelings of awe in admiring a soaring mountain vista, curiosity in being sucked into the tale of dark folk lore, or tranquility in watching a pair of dragonflies dance around lily flowers in a calm pond with the sun reflecting high above and wind softly rustling the foliage around you; in connecting sound symbolism (language) to such ideas and emotions which existed before and independently of language itself, we internalize the language on a primal level and become one with it.
The reward in being a language learner is experiencing life as if it were brand new again.

To Matt, about why learning another language is more than just repeating the same meta process: imagine only ever being exposed to one genre of music. Suddenly, you are exposed to a second genre. Your mind is blown, you learn everything about it, it's challenging, and whatever musical instrument you play you now try to play in that genre. It stretches your mind in ways you never imagined. Now, how has your imaginative capability increased? It has increased a lot, now you can imagine melodies and structures in ways in which you never knew there were variables there, you never knew these tweaks and tools were an option. Your imaginative power has broadened. But if you learn a few more genres, even thought you're repeating the same meta process, your imaginative power keeps increasing and keeps broadening. If you travel far away and listen to a street musician play a peculiar piece you are better equipped to guess their emotion and understand their intention. I think it's the same with languages and better understanding people's cultures. Someone who speaks 6 languages spoken in 4 countries in 2 different contintents would in my oppinion be better equipped to understand someone they've never met and whose language they do not speak than if that same person only ever learned one foreign language. The number of languages do add up in a different way, I believe that. Does this explanation make sense? I mean that speaking a few, more than two, a few significantly different languages helps one understand the human condition better and be more imaginative as a tool to unserstand people's cultures and backgrounds much better, and that is much more developed in someone who speaks several languages compared to someone who speaks two.

I have become rusty at my first language since I live abroad, learning Japanese has made me more aware of languages and what it encompasses, I'm much more focused at becoming better at Greenlandic now and I have a better understanding of the grammar than I ever have, but I'm not as good as formulating though as I've been since I don't get the opportunity to speak it very often, even though I speak native Greenlandic it has a lot of holes compared to my uncles which are extremely proficient. It's interesting that the Greenlandic people are becoming less proficient as a consequence of Greenland becoming more and more bilingual mixing danish with Greenlandic, especially in the capital which is where I'm from.
PS since Greenlandic is a agglutinative polysynthetic language I feel like it's easier for me to learn other synthetic languages and it also uses SOV grammar, I must say though that Japanese is still pretty different so it's still hard, but I imagine that it's a bit easier for me to learn than someone from a western language background, since I don't have to rewire too much of my grammatical word engine. Although I must say that it might have nothing to do with it, maybe it's because we learn both Greenlandic and Danish which are very different when we are young that makes it a little easier to learn new languages since I see a lot of Greenlandic people speak up to 4 to 7 different languages although four is not that impressive since first two are default by the bilingual nature of our nation and most speak English which is again pretty common so just learning another language you are already up to 4 languages

I think a lot of these perceptions and mindsets that Luca talks about is a result of meditation, not just language learning. I also meditate and people who meditate, and have meditated for years, generally have these types of global mindsets. And it is DIFFERENT to educated people who don't meditate - MUCH different. And it's not noticeable or understandable unless you are ALSO someone who has meditated for many years. I am also learning a new language, but I share that same mindset, not because I learn a second language, but because I meditate! It's a kind of meditative mindset.

What a great video with so much interesting information about this process. My only critique is Luca’s responses for one question tended to build on multiple topics - and so the conversation would, in return, take multiple routes. I found myself spacing out at times because it would often take Luca 10+ minutes to answer one question. Matt would ask a great question and have the conversation flowing, and then it would come to a halt because Luca would begin rambling. Again, he would ramble about interesting ideas/strategies/thoughts; but overall it felt like a lot of fluff more than actual content. I’m glad Matt let him talk- but it would have been more productive to have a back-and-forth conversation that was more mutual. I get that Luca is the guest; but Matt isn’t some “novice interviewer” like Ellen DeGen. interviewing someone that he has no skill of. Matt is also passionate about languages; and therefore is a valuable member of this conversation. And thus should be able to mutually discuss these topics TOGETHER like a nice tennis match. Rather, I felt like Matt was unfortunately put on the sideline just to commentate the match. Is this just me? Thanks for the video, Matt!

what sir Luca is referring to when talking about progressing in other type of abilities is what happens when someone dedicates all their life to improve just one ability (AKA midlife crisis)
if you're still young, you should try to extrapolate everything and have a good amount of abilities (depending on you)

On your point about not being able to use guitar to learn programming (15:00):
Although it may not have AS many uses as a language, I do think learning an instrument can give you access to many things, such as insight into many different cultures based on the music they play, knowledge about the history of music (which can translate to knowledge about human evolution and psychology as you dive deeper), etc. Music is very similar to language in many ways!

Yes, labels are misleading. Even saying B1, B2, while it does give some general idea, it depends on the test, and how well people test, etc. etc. The more specific one can be the better in terms of what elements of the language one is comfortable with.

Hi Matt, recently I've been thinking about a "mia japanese add-on update" that actually doesn't respect the "japanese" part tho. In the add-on you can press one button to add furigana and pitch accent, but if we're learning another language and we'd like to use the add-on for its design, we can't add "furigana" in the target language. Many languages (like English, the language that I'm learning btw) can be studied by IPA symbols, so maybe could be an update that allows you to put the IPA pronunciation instead of the furigana. It'd be like "cat", and above it "/kæt/". Maybe it's a ridiculous idea but I think it could work for many people. PD: Thanks for keeping updating the channel :')

Hey Matt, I've just found out about AJATT and MIA and am looking to start. My problem is that I'm having a hard time trying to create a good study schedule that follows the principles of MIA. My main issue is that I don't quite understand the differences between active immersion and passive immersion. You talked briefly on the MIA website about how doing 5 hours of active immersion and 5 hours of passive immersion a day will bring you to fluency in roughly 2 years depending on the person, but what exactly is the difference between the two. As of right now the only passive Japanese immersion that I know about is just the passive listening that you talked about. Is there more to it than that? Should sentence mining be a separate activity from active listening and reading? For example, if I had a piece of text or audio for sentence mining and then did active listening and reading on different things, would that be better than doing them at the same time? Should I be making any other kinds of flashcards besides 10-20 sentence cards per day if I'm already pretty comfortable with kanji? I'd really appreciate it if you told me the study schedule that worked best for you so I can get some ideas and make one of my own. My current Japanese level is a little below N2, so I'm not a complete beginner but I'm still nowhere near fluency. Thanks for your help

With the reading/ speaking gap in Mandarin... that's what's so hard about Mandarin for me. When I started playing WoW in Chinese I already knew what people were typing out and what a lot of the quest text said... But I have little to no speaking ability because my brain just always goes for the path of least resistance, which is reading the hanzi as kanji. I've noticed my friend from Taiwan has the same problem in Japanese.

Reg children vs adults and language learning differences and abstracting overarching concepts in language. Matthew Walker writes some interesting things. His discussion on REM sleep is pretty interesting. Then there's the fact that children get an abundance of this learning

I speak Japanese to an intermediate level and have kinda hit a plateau. I live in a area where I don't speak very often and never need to say more than self-introduction and basic conversation. So when I watch TV or anime I am completely lost; I will understand 40% at most. I tried to change my phone to Japanese and use a monolingual dictionary but I still don't feel like I'm at the level to make the change. Please can you give me some tips.
