Part of it is baked into the scheme. Zone blocking requires more athletic offensive linemen who move well, can pull, scoop block, etc. That can create matchup problems against larger linemen. But when the blocking helps the run game work better, it also makes the entire team better. So everything is tradeoffs. If you give up zone blocking, your explosive run game, offense and overall team may not perform as well. The reason Feliciano played over Burford is performance and experience. Burford has a ton of talent, but Feliciano is vastly more experienced. It's why he was brought in. And he did play better than Burford.
@@LoanwordEggcorn I agree on the tradeoff. I'm still upset at missed opportunities to obtain rare athletic and pass protecting O linemen like Wirfs and Slater. However, I do think that next year we will see a more pass focused offense due to the emergence of Purdy with a full off-season. This may even mean trading Deebo and obtaining a more conventional WR.
im not a football expert by any means but i felt this way last year watching JT or other ppls breakdowns of the 9ers. the sheer amount of "we're gonna be hot here" is something thats irritating to me. gameplan wise, shouldnt we at least try not to be hot every once in a while? if only just to break up the monotony a little bit? its almost like being hot is a core component of their offensive scheme. i mean, even on "good" plays over the past years you see their QB (whichever one it was) have to just stand in there in the face of a free runner and eat massive shots on a regular basis. thats not good, or is it? do we think its all just some weird fluke coincidence that they literally ran out of healthy QBs last year? the thing that probably impressed me the most about purdy this year is that he finished the season. maybe im just talking out of my butt here but i find it bewildering how they just refuse to account for obvious blitzers so regularly.
I mean pretty good pass protection like the sack at ~18 minutes is a coverage sack. Need better play design they lost to man press cov a lot by the looks of it. KC knew 49ners bread and butter was intermediate routes but based on timing throws. Disrupt that route by 0.5 second with press and timing is off.
Purdy did miss 2-3 big play throws facing some consistent pressure, but he did leave the field with leads at the end of regulation and in OT. And never wilted under the pressure. He acquitted himself very well. I'm interested in seeing a what he can do with a full off-season under his belt where he doesn't have to rehab. He can focus on strengthening his body and absorbing more of the playbook. That being said....Shanahan let this team down massively. Too many bizarre inconsistencies and Kyle trying to be too cute with dumb-ass playaction plays when the entire universe knows you're going to pass late and in OT. The pull of the C in that last third down play was evidence of him overthinking again instead of just designing a play to protect the QB and give him 2-3 seconds to hit THREE OPEN RECEIVERS on the play. Shanahan needs to give Purdy more freedom to check out of plays or protections and take in input from his QB. Purdy is nimble and can run, shift the pocket and put him in motion to negate the pass-rush and let him play on his already quite impressive instinct. And Jesus, John Lynch, time to invest some resources into O-line. Trent Williams isn't going to play forever. Need a new RT and RG desperately. They were 21st in pass-blocking all year, and I'd imagine even worse in the playoffs.
What I like about how JT critiques Purdy is, whereas most I feel aren't super reasonable with how high of a standard they hold him to, JT is coming from an informed and respectful mindset. Like, when he wants brock to go for the pylon, it's cause he trusts Brock's usual decision making enough to feel like he KNOWS that Brock sees that it's on the table. Which is better than just saying "ehh, he doesn't throw it cause he's got a weak arm!" To me, I think the fact that there's still this room for improvement bodes well for Brock. Cause we've seen him learn in real time. So i think he's gonna swallow his pride and study this tape like a monk
It’s kinda crazy that they got rid of Trey Lance because they didn’t have time for a QB to develop and needed someone that was ready to “win now”, and now after the make a wish kid couldn’t score 20 points to win a Super Bowl playing on an offense with 5 pro bowlers, we’re talking about how he just needs more time to develop. If they were gonna develop a QB they should have gone with the one that actually has athleticism. Brock Purdy’s skill set is already developed, his weakness isn’t accuracy or reading a defense, his weakness is athleticism, and unless they legalize steroids I don’t see how that’s going to “develop”.
@@ErikDayne you clearly didn't watch Trey Lance. That kid was going NOWHERE! Brock Purdy doesn't "need" to develop. If Kyle Shanahan wasn't an egotistical zealot for his precious scheme and literally just ran the ball on first downs, let alone literally just that 3rd and 4 in overtime, the 49ers would've won that Superbowl. Brock Purdy is more than good enough to win a super bowl right now without needing any extra help. Trey Lance wasn't very fast, couldn't read a defense at a division 1 college level, let alone an NFL level, and was far too brittle. Brock Purdy RIGHT NOW is a better practical QB than all but maybe 10 guys in the NFL. His 10 yard splits are basically identical to Christian McCaffrey, meaning that straight line speed, within a 10 yard box, Brock Purdy is stride for stride with CMC. Which is far more useful than a fast 40 for a QB, cause when TF is a QB gonna break off a 40 yard run? If your offense requires your QB to break off 40 yard runs to be effective, you are picking in the top 10; see Chicago, Arizona, etc. Further, Brock Purdy is a high level instinctive football player when rolling out of the pocket. Think Russell Wilson in his prime, Aaron Rodgers, heck, even some of the Joe Montana stuff. That's where QB athleticism is most important, and I hate to break it to you, but Brock is pretty effing good doing that. Did you watch the NFC championship? Even with all of dan Campbell's questionable decisions, the niners would've been dead in the water if the QB (ahem, Brock Purdy) couldn't get out running outside the pocket both to evade the pass rush and throw down field as well as to take off running himself. What Brock Purdy has you can't teach or develop: awesome football instinct. Even if we take away the fact that Brock's footwork and fundamentals are about as pristine as you'll ever see for a 24 year old NFL QB, his instinctive football IQ and daring are off the charts. He is a playmaker. Trey Lance's ceiling was Colin kapaernick. Brock Purdy's is Russell Wilson, Drew Brees. Trey Lance wasn't ever going to get to a level of football understanding and instinctiveness to even be able to relay and carry out Shanahans admittedly high fluff marching orders. Honestly, the guy on the niners who needs to develop most is Kyle Shanahan. He HAS to change his system so his QB can change protections at the line of scrimmage. Because that's what people mean when they say Kyle isn't "giving Brock answers." It's not Brock not having enough weapons or good looks against coverage. The problem is Brock has been given basically zero agency to check into different protections when he sees a bad look between his line and the potential blitz packages or rush. It's a fundamental necessity for the offensive coordinator to give the QB that agency when operating such a complex and motion heavy offense with all these crazy route developments. I don't care how open your stars are, if the QB is in the dirt because his coach thought it was okay to leave the second coming of Reggie White unblocked. Lamar Jackson ain't getting away from LT, Joe Greene, Aaron Donald, JJ Watt if those guys are freaking unblocked. Brock has had the agency to check guys out of motions at the line, change guys routes, etc. But not letting him change the protection when he sees the mismatch coming is setting him up to fail. Part of what makes high football IQ valuable is that your QB can check you out of those mistakes before they're even an issue. However, when you're so beholden to your own ideas that you refuse to give your stars the agency to protect themselves, if they get lit up cause they were following your orders, it's on the coach
@@ErikDayne He took them to the Bowl and lost it only in over time... Geez. Would you still be typing this had the Chiefs not blocked that extra point?
@@greyklopstock7155nobody watched Trey Lance. There was nothing to watch. He started 4 games and then they traded him for nothing. No one will ever know if he could have developed to being better than Purdy. Also your own logic betrays you. You say Purdy is elite but then also they should have ran the ball. If Purdy is that good then passing the ball wouldn’t be a mistake. You’re admitting Purdy is a game manager by admitting they would have been better off running the ball, which I actually agree with. Yes I watched the NFC championship game. Purdy had a passer rating of 39 in the first half. Thankfully he played better in the second half or the 49ers might be on the phone with Kirk Cousins right now. Also don’t put Purdy’s name in the same sentence with Russ Rodgers and Montana. They all won Super Bowls. Brock needed to put up 20 points to win the Super Bowl and he couldn’t do it.
@@jackburton4892Jimmy G also took the 49ers to the Super Bowl, how’s he looking now that he’s on a different team? And who knows what would have happened if they made that extra point. I will say if the game comes down to a blocked extra point, your offense didn’t score enough to win. If you lose by one point you should have scored more points in the rest of the game. Especially when the defense held the Chiefs to 19 points in regulation.
Also Burford was absolutely supposed to pick up Jones on that last play. He failed to execute. He blocked the wrong guy. If he just plays the snap the way it was called thye get a td.
Only pass play they called for center to pull. Strange call be Shanahan . JT's analysis of that play was excellent. The Super Bowl was 3rd in 4 with ,2 minutes to go ( another free runner) and they did not execute.
Free runners should never- ever be allowed inside the gaps - Force them around the outside giving the QB an extra few seconds to get rid of the ball- Purdy needs more arm strength He has to throw a harder tighter spiral with accuracy twenty to twenty- five yards down the field - Stop the Free Runner on the QBs blind side - make the Free runner approach on QBs arm side so he has him in his vision
@@michaelwatt7846 Yeah they were getting run over by Jones every single play. Purdy did great to get some plays completed but the amount of pressure he was under was unacceptable for such an overall great offense.
Came here to get the unfiltered truth about Purdy, came away thinking the 49ers should sell high on Samuel this offseason. Biggest game of his career and it was like a walkthrough effort-wise.
@@BM-si2ei His playing style is a big part of it. He's the jet sweep, YAC guy in the offense. I agree that he is a big injury risk but Shanahan's offense is built around his abilities so he isn't going anywhere.
Two best things about him are his attitude and his salary. San Fran already needs to start thinking about his replacement, because there's no way you want this guy under center at $40M per year.
@@BM-si2ei i would definately want him at 40m a year...pretty sure he is going to command 50 a yr though if he plays at the same level as this season. Very likely he will improve though since he will get a full offseason and not be in rehab. He is gonna be pricey, but thats what franchise qbs cost.
@@zeebird66 I don't wanna make too quick of guesses, but something tells me he ain't gonna ask for so much. If he keeps getting sponsor deals like other players have, that combined with how ridiculously humble and responsible he is might mean he would take less to increase cap space (nothing new). Idk, I just get that vibe from him. We'll see tho.
First season here and I’ve been blown away by how much I’ve learned here brother. Thank you for the hundreds of hours you spent on your channel this year. Looking forward to next season!
The analysis on the final play compared to some of the Mahomes analysis really shows the contrast in the two lines. Particularly one of the OT plays by the Chief's Smith who blocked Bosa and managed to get a hand on the DB blitzing wide as well while these guys seemed to struggle with some basic assignments. Just shows the adjustments each team made at the half were a massive impact on the game when the Chiefs had answers to protect Mahomes and the 49ers couldn't do the same.
The 9ers right side of the o line has been there Achilles heel all season. That's why they were ranked 22nd all season. It bit them in the ass in this game.
I agree. Part of that is also Reid trusting Patrick to set the protection, make adjustments/checks, and ad lib. Purdy is only in year 2 and hasn't yet been given that luxury. (Not sure when Shanahan will give him those tools, though)
@@tylersimmons6524 This was absolutely the difference in this game. I watched this video when it came out so don't recall, but is there even a check by Purdy to another play in this game? There's at least two major ones Mahomes had, with the big one being on the final drive in reg on 3rd and 2 and checking to have the RB run a flat. The question is also is if Purdy can handle making those reads as well. I can understand not putting that on him now, but I'm also not convinced he's capable of making those calls. I recall seeing Brady on the Bucs in the playoffs and him literally yelling at his center that he, the QB, was making the protection call. This is what wins these kinds of games and not everyone can do that.
I'm sad the season is over, but one of the things I'll miss most is JT's breakdowns. Feel like I've learned so much watching these this year. A wholehearted Thank You. Looking forward to next season.
I find it so weird that after a game where two teams are so clearly evenly matched, people have a takeaway that Purdy sucks and PM is a god. I mean that wasn’t the game I saw
social media spaces I frequent have given Purdy his props; dude played just well enough to win a SB, but the niners came up against a dang ol dynasty. both sides of the ball, game of inches. I like him
Internet opinions are very results based and kneejerky. Purdy benefited from that vs GB. Here it works against him because of the L even though he was much better in this one.
@@robcanisto8635 yeah, there were a few throws I'm sure he'd love to have back, but he played a pretty solid game and didn't turn anything over. The fumble on the first drive, the penalties on Trent on the second to force the punt, the muffed punt, the blocked PAT, the blitzes and prevent-only defense they were calling toward the end of the game and OT.. lots of things lost the 49ers this game, but Purdy is not on that list for me.
Agreed. According to that logic Mahomes was a hack and Brady a god after SB55. San Fran at least scored TDs and took it to overtime. And yes, Purdy was not playing with a great O line. Trent Williams is one dude.
Purdys footwork fundamentals are gonna have to be on point to get the most out of his arm. He shown he is capable but ive felt like the last 4 weeks its been more like 50-60% perfect reps and it can make all the difference. Those spray misses on open opportunities can grind the offense to a halt. Not worried tho because hes def comes off as a work ethic guy and im sure he will refine his fundamentals with time. To make sure his footwork doesnt get disrupted as often, the oline will have to be bolstered.
It feels like he's getting happy feet and wasting movement shifting away from sometimes-nonexistent pressure. They better fix up the OL before it becomes permanent. How many times have we seen teams wreck young QBs because they start feeling ghost pressure and that's all she wrote?
so he couldn't work on it during the season when he can acutally implement yet he can learn it only during an offseason? lol ok. this also wasn't his first season...people are quick to forget. bottom line Purdy hit his ceiling. get ready for the league to eat him up.
@@albundy3929 learning on the job/ during the season isn't as easy as having an off season to develop what you're working on and converting that into good habits. for example, instead of having to constantly remind himself about his footwork, it can be natural to him if he works on it for months. guess you're not the brightest if you cant understand that or never played sports
@@albundy3929 you lack brains if you think going straight in to a season fresh off of surgery, to your throwing arm, is the same as preparing for a season with months of focus.
So disappointed with Deebo as someone who loves him as a player. He got exposed badly in this game. He was in jail by McDuffie. I hate how we did not run nearly enough screens and bubbles for Deebo and force these corners to tackle.
Yeah this tape has me pretty bummed out. I love Deebo, but I wish there was some more urgency on his part. He had some good plays, but man the low effort overshadows it, it seems.
For the record, Deebo went down in the third quarter due to a hamstring injury. We don't know what potential injury he was struggling with before the game. But let's remember the impact he has had on some previous games instead of being so fickle and overreacting to the last game we watch. He put the team on his back against the Eagles. As long as he still has the potential to perform like that next season, he's staying.
I get JTs frustration and I agree Purdy should launch it more. This issue is after watching A TON of Jonnydels breakdowns, the post is just not on the progression. I have zero clue why. My guess is its more Shanahan than Purdy. Shanahan runs an offense to minimize the impact of his QB than maximize it. Again just my two cents from watching a ton of film. Shanahan favors the high percentage throws and spots. He does take shots in this game but overall that's what he prefers.
jonnydel is a purdy apologist. just like he was a jimmy apologist before that. the post is 100% in the progression. just look for kyle's installs. or watch some falcons tape. or watch his disciples texans, dolphins, jets. they all throw both the post & the corner.
@@ronbintscatcosure it’s in the progression, but Kyle doesn’t want him to throw that nor is it an early read. Pass protection plays a big part in this, you can’t except purdy to step up and sling a dart with a dude in his face

Rich Gannon was like that in some ways I don't see Purdy being able to throw outside the numbers effectively but he is extremely solid issue for the niners is there going to have to pay him 50 plus million
JT you've really got a great thing going here. Love your insight, your perspective, your breakdowns, your sarcasm, your wit. Thank you for a solid hour of entertainment
On the 3rd and 4 about Kittle, it seems Kittle has not fully recovered from injury, according to Shanahan interview. Maybe that is one of the reasons they put him there rather than 23. maybe also why Kittle had so few receiving chances.
Even so, with the game on the line, I think Kittle can man up and make the block if they put him on the left of Trent there instead of being the HB block imo.
@@Christopher._M They didn't even look at Aiyuk. That's why he started crying.. He could've been MVP. And the chief corners didn't have to do sh1t cause they never look to throw to him.
I definitely get you point about Deebo’s lackluster effort. I noticed during THIS game that when he got up after being tackled he’d extended one of his legs straight out. He couldn’t bend it. I think he played that game injured and just touched it out.
🏈 Like the fact that you've eventually become unapologetic & thick-skinned over time versus the backlash in the comment section over your opinions. "It's my channel deal with it". Way to go JT. Great coverage as always.
When so called "analysts" talk about "there's no way Purdy can get better than how he played this year"...I always refer to these videos. Once he incorporates the "Big Post/Big Flag" throw in his arsenal, it'll be lights out. Kid didn't have a true off-season last year since he was rehabbing. So its reasonable to expect this level of development going forward.
As a Niners fan, I appreciate your breakdown of just how poorly they played in this game. This helped confirm my observation and understand what i saw better. I just subscribed. Thank you!
9:26 he has to throw it early to make that happen ive seen purdy hit a pass 53 air yards thats his furthest so far and this is atleast 50 to 55 to hit this in stride for a td i think he'll watch this and take the off-season to work on his strengths and weaknesses
Hey, JT thanks for all the videos you do. They helped me learn a lot and I play Qb for my School and they helped me get the starting job and I was the first Qb to win homecoming in 7 years. We came back from 20 points down.
KS needs a passing game coordinator. He's had running game coordinators, and his run game/ PA is top notch. He needs a guy who can give him something he hasnt had in the drop back game. Itll be huge in games where they are daring you to drop back and pass
Great video. Even as a Chiefs fan, it's kinda tough to see just how rough Purdy's day was at times. Also, as a more recent fan (British, so I never grew up with American football) great to have things like scheme broken down as much as you do, and going so much into the "why" not just the "what", both good and bad. Won't pretend I understand anywhere near all, but I feel I'm learning every time. Also, I know it's QB school, not CB school, but wow, how good are McDuffie and Sneed. IDK if/how we can keep Jones and Sneed this offseason though, both need to get that $$$$$
@@nothankyou7357 To me that play in the 4th is the bigger fail because there didn't need to be any adjustments. Purdy just gotta go no-hitch and stand up and play catch Aiyuk. Easy first down. They run the ball 3 times with CMC down to 30 seconds or so and they get a closer field goal for Moody. Maybe CMC even gets a first down and you can run the clock down to 3-5 seconds and have Moody kick the walk-off. No overtime, you deny Mahomes the chance to do anything.
Patriots fan here, respect to the Niners man. I wanted you guys to win so bad, Kelce doesn't deserve anymore rings. He doesn't do anything all game and disrespects the team that had him locked down the entire game. Brock reminds me of a young Brady and Montana. I hope you guys get your 6th with this guy at the helm. GGs Niners.
I think you hit the nail on the head regarding passing up the flag at around the 10:00 mark. I think Purdy turns down those plays because those aren't throws the coaches want him making for one reason or another. His arm might be a limiting factor for those throws. He's got decent zip on the ball with a good base, but you can see it on that first missed throw to Deebo, Brock doesn't seem quite as confident on throws outside the numbers. Maybe it's just me.
This is why I waited a few days to watch this. I knew it was gonna be brutal lol. Glad to see our 2nd year QB has some areas to improve this offseason. Hopefully Deebo gains some gratitude as well. Great breakdown JT
I think you've got the best read on Purdy out of anyone posting takes or breakdowns online. I wonder if the deep shot is something that is a focus of this offseason given that Purdy isn't having to deal with recovering from surgery this time around.
I watched an interview today where Purdy says he’s looking forward to putting in a full off season of work. Focusing on arm strength, athleticism and mastering the playbook further. I’d imagine he’s going to review film as well. I’m hoping we see an even better version of Purdy next season.
@@puckutubesux7356 cmon man, theres a difference between air yards per completion and taking deep shots. To use a baseball metaphor, Purdy is borderline elite at hitting doubles and triples but sometimes you gotta hit a homerun and for whatever reason (be it the read, his personal tendencies, his arm, whatever) he has repeatedly not hit those this year. Its his second year in the league, and he was hurt all offseason last year - theres no reason he can't come back and be even better next year.
@@TwoDownThru12 He hit home runs to Aiyuk vs. TB, Kittle vs. JAX, Aiyuk vs. Washington, Deebo vs. Seattle, Aiyuk vs. Seattle. He's the most accurate vertical thrower in football. You are under some misconception that comes from brainwashing from modern media and fans that have no clue about football. The guy on the other team in the SB throws screens, dinky underneath freebees, and shovel passes. On the one deep ball he did complete in the SB, it should have been picked by Gipson, but Gipson stopped running.
@@puckutubesux7356Wanted to see what throws you were referencing so I pulled up Aiyuk vs Tampa. 40 air yards and caught on loose coverage is a routine NFL throw. Also, why try to lie about Mahomes like we don’t know what he’s capable of vertically? We saw it for years. The SB game plan called for shorter completions (understandable against the 49ers D and having MVS as your x receiver), but you can’t genuinely claim he’s a short yardage merchant.
@@ErikDayne Yeah, because that's totally a relevant stat. LaDainian Tomlinson had many games where he threw as many TDs as Philip Rivers. I guess Rivers was terrible too. This is another reason to hate Kyle Shanahan...he does this garbage on purpose.
I didn't notice it during the game, but wow was Ayuik open on so many of his deep routes. It's a big weakness that's now been exposed. Purdy has to figure it out or else it's an early playoff exit. Look at Hurts this year vs last. You only get a year before teams figures out how to take advantage of your weaknesses.
The O-Line kept Purdy from having 3-4 TDs and 300+ Yards Passing. They weren't blocking on pass plays bro. When that's the case, you gotta just say fuck it and hit the underneath routes so you won't get sacked. Purdy can throw the deep ball just fine. @@bc_qbeval My man, two of Aiyuk's routes that were past the safety Purdy had plenty of time to make the throw. Thank you bro!! I’m having post traumatic stress from this past nightmare!! A beautiful tire fire..I think there’s a lot to look forward to and one is our second year quarterback coming back from devastating elbow surgery, you know. This will be his first offseason doing actual strength training
I'm so happy for Purdy. Bro has proved he is capable! Just need everyone to lock in next time (and a better o-line man. COmpared to other QBs he constantly is under insane pressure).

I think it's pretty clear that Purdy got happy feet because the Chiefs pass rush was crushing the pocket back in his face. Still I think he played pretty well, and better than many of the Niners, who looked old and lazy.
to be fair to Purdy a lot of their 3rd and 4th down formations/blitzes were never practiced or ever done this season by the Chiefs, they were custom plays drawn up at halftime cuz Purdy was mincing the defense they were using in the first half. I was super impressed with this kids superbowl performance, outdueled Mahomes for most of the game. He is gonna be so much better next year having played this defense before and with his first offseason to learn and improve.
Yeah absolutely. The one thing people don't bring up when talking about Mahomes and the chiefs is the incredible continuity of staff. No one mentions That Mahomes has the best defensive coordinator in football and the best head coach in football, also this was the first year he had a coordinator shift with Bienemy leaving, who is probably coming back! They bring up how good Kyle Shanahan is when talking about Purdy in order to downplay his greatness but never on the flip side. The 49ers lose their coordinators every single year and it seems the Chiefs never do.@@gen3kali877
AWESOME coverage all year. I get Deebo makes some tough to take down runs and all, but I honestly say sell on him with a trade. Imagine a bubble screen or any screen to Kittle...ala Kelce. Kittle's tough to bring down mentality would energize like Deebo. Imagine Jennings as 2 always on field giving his effort on routes and blocking. I just imagine the offense opening more for Kittle and Ayiuk with another receiver running hard. I salute him playing thru injury, but its been an all year effort issue.
Just recently found this channel and am really enjoying it. Just finished watching this and the Mahomes breakdown. I appreciate the analysis and definitely learned a lot but the way JT talks about how the KC offense owners Niners defense in the Mahomes video combined with how he talks about all the problems and mistakes the Niners offense had, and how great the KC defense played, in this video would lead one to believe this was a 35-7 blowout instead of a 3 point overtime win aided by recovering 6 of 7 fumbles in the game. Seems maybe the play to play perspective is a little skewed by the final outcome.
57:20 Kittle doesn't look to his left at all during this entire play. His whole focus is on 27 there. I don't know if that's because of him being set in the backfield where he's not used to playing, or if that's a scheme thing where he was told to focus there, but 22 could've been screaming "HERE I COME MOTHER F--R" and Kittle wouldn't have seen it.
My contention is Kyles system is too rigid he wants the ball to go 1 place and thats it. Purdy being so young hard to ask him to do diff than what coach wants.
JT- I was just talking about you to someone in Vegas during the game. My first 49er game I went to was the game you played vs Matt Cassell and the Pats. Brady tore his ACL that year I believe.
Love your channel big fan! Here is the problem on some of the plays that Purdy not hitting Aiyuk over the top. He was double covered even he had a step on DB, when you are double covered any PBU will end up as pick there is less chance for DPI. Even with the greatness of Mahomes, he got lucky 49ers safety could not the track the ball
That early one I had no clue what Gip was doing. He's been solid but thinking it's gotta be Brown and Huf on those rookie deals moving forward. They're both game changers
Mahomes did not get lucky. He threw that ball bc the safety had his back turned. He knew he wasn’t going to be able to track the ball. Purdy had the same opportunity but failed to execute
Offseason for next year. Offense: Draft OL, trade Debo, trade Kittle (if you trust the other TEs you drafted), sign Jennings and Ayuik - focus on a West Coast style offense but develop a 2 RB run game with CMC as a receiver and screen/check-down RB and Jordan Masson as a through-the-tackles back (there is no way CMC stays health next year doing this again), hire an OC to help Kyle with the drop back game (no way kyle would like it tho). Defense: Draft or sign some good press-man corners, Get rid of Ambry Thomas. Think about keeping Wilks as a DB coach and hiring Belichick or Vrable?? (defense change from wide 9 to 4-3 or 3-4 might be tricky... could they coach wide 9?), if you get Belichick of Vrabel then draft another run defender LB or DT.
I don't know if its just me, or does it seem like Purdy doesn't use his legs as much as last season? (when he replaced injured Jimmy G) Like the plays Shanahan is dialing up, he wants Purdy to stay in the pocket rather than using rollouts or moving the pocket which I think is one of Purdys strengths? I dont know, you tell me, not an expert in this, just another fan with an observation...
Hindsight is 20/20 obviously. In the heat of the moment these things are tough to execute 100% of time. 9ers made SuperBowl and were a missed ex point away from winning it all. So they must of done a lot right too. Those 3rd and 4 calls at crucial moments are head scratchers. The urgency didnt seem like it was there for some odd reason. All in all these guys played their hearts out. Was extremely impressed with Jennings. And our D-line did a superb job as well. I thought Brock played great for a qb with 1 1/2 years NFL experience. He was poised and ready. This one was a tough loss to swallow for sure. We had them!!!
I can't remember exactly when it happened, but Brock hit his throwing arm on top of a lineman's helmet and didn't push the ball much after that. I wanna say it was in the 2nd quarter.
Fixing the interior o line is a must in order for Purdy to take the next step as a player and maybe become a top 5 QB. Trade Deebo at a high. Too many chefs in the kitchen it sounds fun to have all these exotic pieces but there’s so much unneeded wrinkles in this offense at times. Addition by subtraction is needed mahomes got better without hill and with a massive improvement at C RG and LG. You cannot allow interior pressure at the highest level it speeds up your QBs process and causes missed throws and reads. The things that happened to Purdy happened to Allen Lamar and burrow last year when he got picked off twice and Purdy is not as good as these players. Against this defense you have to prioritise protecting your QB like Lefleur did when the beat them this year. You don’t need great weapons for a QB to be great it mostly comes down to O line play in big games.
Trading Deebo would be insane. Just draft and develop some O-Lineman and make sure you hire the right defensive coordinator. The Packers have great weapons (Watson, Reed, Wicks, Doubs)...you lost me there.
Thanks for your insights from this year! Glad I found you on here. It’s been great listening to your critique and knowledge. Can’t wait for next year. Go 9ers!
Incredible breakout. Purdy happy feet not trusting the called protections hopefully he can do more checks at the line. Deebo was banged up but still. Damn. Right side of o-line. That 3 and 4 after the 2 min will haunt this team forever.
All I have to say is that it is unfair to demand of Purdy that he be a Superbowl winning QB that's going to take SF to the promised land. Look, the guy is more or less a rookie. This a fabulous performance for a near rookie. Purdy is the kind of guy who will always be improving because he is intelligent, disciplined, and his mind is clear when takes on a task; he's a winner.
I missed the Kittle in the backfield. WTF? Had some buddies over watching. Bit distracted. Watching the breakdown, Niners gave it away. Not even mentioning the punt return turnover. Is there anyway we can get the full 22 video for game break downs in the future?
@@Klust413 20’yards not deep pretty sure the tape highlights that you can stop with with trolling anything over his comfort zone he doesn’t even attempt the pass did you even watch the video? Or your here just to be in ya feelings?
Get him pass protection that allows receivers more than 3 seconds to get down the field and Purdy more than 2 seconds to throw and he just might. It's something he said he has been working on, but his work don't matter if he has no time. He doesn't need 10 seconds like Lamar and Mahomes get, but jeez that pocket crumbles so fast so often. He has shown glimpses (and even instances where he is in the swarm). He clearly has the confidence, but constant, insane pressure is messing up timings and throws.
@@mckickz665 He was 2nd in the NFL in air yards per completion. Captain Shovel Pass on the other team was 29th. This is why these film breakdown videos, even when they're by former players, are horrible. They give casuals like you the idea that you can actually draw important conclusions from them, when in reality, you can point out numerous mistakes of every QB in history behind the scenes, which is what happened for decades in private. Literally, if JTO had access to All-22 for Joe Montana and Steve Young, he would have even more things to criticize than he would with Purdy. Also, if 20 yards isn't deep, what is, exactly? Thx 4 great season JT! My takeaway here was armchair QBs focus on the macro Kyle S. decisions of calling timeouts etc but Kyle got outcoached in the trenches a week before the game started.
On that Kittle in the backfield play, I know Shanahan probably thinks of Kittle and Juzcyck as interchangeable, and maybe in the run game they are However, here if he's going to have three receivers and wants McCaffrey to run a route from wide why not sub in Juzcyck for pass protection if you're having the sixth blocker line up in the backfield. I'm sure the actual fullback is more experienced at running that kind of block.
After following this channel the last two years…. Please god. Reach out to Kyle. As an advisor… something! I would love to see you as part of that coaching staff even as an advisor. Anything. They could use the help.
I love how objective you are and there’s not a thing you said here that didn’t make complete sense. You were very fair and I feel a lot better about this loss because there were so many missed opportunities and mistakes made that I didn’t see during the game and we really cant blame the loss on the reasons everyone is focusing on because there were many missed opportunities to score that we didn’t capitalize on and if we had taken advantage of the chances we had there wouldn’t have been an OT. We really can’t blame this loss entirely on a single decision.
Feels like purdy has PTSD from pressure coming on his right side (surgically repaired elbow). He just doesn’t trust 68 to not get walked back into his lap.
I keep seeing people say purdy cant really improve as a qb like hes hit his physical wall but the things he does really well at and great at most the times he could perfect those things about his game hes at a disadvantage when it comes to height and arm strength so he has to be the best at these other things to make it for it his placement reading the defense and getting the ball out on time hes getting his first off-season i expect him to comeback and be even better will see but thats what im hoping for
Fr I still don't understand how people think Brock is the first physically limited guy ever to literally have zero room for improvement. Like, Brady was a statue and he improved, Brees was smaller and slower and he improved, Montana was noodle armed and slight in build and he improved. It's almost as if we've had so many insane physical anomalies enter the league at QB recently that people have forgotten that for 90% of football history, QBs tend to be+~ a few pounds or a couple inches in height from where Brock Purdy is. I mean, for every Elway, there's a Montana. He's in his second year and he's 24. I think he'll learn. Drew Brees started off not really throwing deep and ended up one of the best deep ball throwers ever.
Quarterbacks in the NFL take 6 to 7 years to reach their peak. If the Niners stay good Brock should improve quite a lot over the next 3 or 4 years. I'm looking forward to it.
Yup, looks like Brock read the presnap as safety help over top aiyuk's route so he predetermined throwing to Jennings. Aiyuk's man sneaks in to blitz and Brock can't adjust fast enough with the free runner and kittle blocking no one. Its a good set up by KC def but its plays like that that win superbowls.
Great point about pulling the center - if none of the routes were really being run into the second level of the defense, then what's the point of attempting to confuse the linebackers by pulling the center?
Everyone overlooked that KC defense all year but they are champs because of that D. Yeah Pat did Pat things but that D was clamping em all playoffs and the SB. It was awesome to see.
My takeaway from the game, Purdy can go toe for toe with against an elite defense, both defenses were elite but SF ran out of steam and allowed Mahomes his check downs. Also that muffed punt was a deciding factor along with the clear lack of talent on the o-line
Purdy seems not to check down with his other receivers sometimes, & he locks into one receiver and will force the ball to him. I'm sure he will work on this & get better. Given its only Purdy's 2nd year, he did very well.
Yeah this tape is alarming for sure. I didn't see him trust his arm or throw one guy open..😅 took chances that weren't there and missed Aiyuk a ton. I'm not shocked that Aiyuk is sulking. Dude worked his ass off all night to get open. For the first time Purdy and his weak arm was a glaring deficiency. Jimmy G 2.0? Some easy check downs missed also. Hopefully he works on some fundamentals. Taking what the defense gives him and spatial awareness. He's got a ways to go.
First, thanks for the break down on both sides of the ball. Neither team was my home team, so my emotional investment was neutral (well except for my name-sake). What surprises me is that in all of these reviews no one seems to remember the missed extra point that would have given the 49'ers the win - no OT. I have also heard/read a lot of comments dissing Purdy's as not being good enough. There are only a few Joe Montana's, Troy Aikman's, Mahome's that have that extra 1% mojo magic. I think Purdy is a top 5 QB and will keep the 49'ers winning for a long time.
This breakdown confirms what I saw all season. BA needs more balls thrown his way.
It was rigged. Swift got more camera time than anyone. BA was open and never thrown the ball. very weird.
Man, soo many people are under the impression BA and co. were not open. They just need to watch the all 22
I'm tired of the terrible pass protection in crucial situations year after year. Whether it's the personnel or scheme, it needs to change
Which is better than just saying "ehh, he doesn't throw it cause he's got a weak arm!"
To me, I think the fact that there's still this room for improvement bodes well for Brock.
O-line needs to be revamped, big time.
Only pass play they called for center to pull. Strange call be Shanahan . JT's analysis of that play was excellent. The Super Bowl was 3rd in 4 with ,2 minutes to go ( another free runner) and they did not execute.
Many plays were a game of millimeters. I doubt we’ll ever see a Super Bowl with so many close calls
Free runners should never- ever be allowed inside the gaps - Force them around the outside giving the QB an extra few seconds to get rid of the ball- Purdy needs more arm strength
He has to throw a harder tighter spiral with accuracy twenty to twenty- five yards down the field - Stop the Free Runner on the QBs blind side - make the Free runner approach on QBs arm side so he has him in his vision
@@michaelwatt7846 Yeah they were getting run over by Jones every single play. Purdy did great to get some plays completed but the amount of pressure he was under was unacceptable for such an overall great offense.

This is what wins these kinds of games and not everyone can do that.

social media spaces I frequent have given Purdy his props; dude played just well enough to win a SB, but the niners came up against a dang ol dynasty. both sides of the ball, game of inches. I like him
Internet opinions are very results based and kneejerky.

Purdy gets a real off-season this year rather than just rehabing an injury. People are quick to forget
Yea he needs to work on his footwork. They need some offensive line work too.

For the record, Deebo went down in the third quarter due to a hamstring injury. We don't know what potential injury he was struggling with before the game. But let's remember the impact he has had on some previous games instead of being so fickle and overreacting to the last game we watch. He put the team on his back against the Eagles. On the 3rd and 4 about Kittle, it seems Kittle has not fully recovered from injury, according to Shanahan interview. Maybe that is one of the reasons they put him there rather than 23. maybe also why Kittle had so few receiving chances.

Great job all season JT…will miss these videos until next season comes
This break down hits in the feels
Knowing Purdy, he will learn a lot from this game film and come in next year much improved. he gets to work on his game instead of rehabbing.
Schizoid take
🏈 Like the fact that you've eventually become unapologetic & thick-skinned over time versus the backlash in the comment section over your opinions.
Thank you!
Glad I could help!
IDK if/how we can keep Jones and Sneed this offseason though, both need to get that $$$$$
Gonna watch the whole video but I lowkey went straight for your analysis on that 3rd down goaline in OT
Don't skip the breakdown on the failed 3rd and 4 at 2:00 left in the 4th qtr
He was 2nd in the NFL in air yards per completion. How many freak'n more deep shots is he supposed to take?
Waiting on analysis on these QBs in this upcoming draft class
Maye, Daniel’s , penix , jj, bo nix
Wow the niners stars were clamped down more than I though
Gotta give Purdy credit. He gave Mahomes a fight.
KC defense has been fantastic this year. They shut down Lamar so Purdy deserves big props.
Oh yeah Purdy was great he almost had more TD passes than their third string WR
@@ErikDayne
What a bitch think comment.
@@ErikDayne Yeah, because that's totally a relevant stat. LaDainian Tomlinson had many games where he threw as many TDs as Philip Rivers. I guess Rivers was terrible too. This is another reason to hate Kyle Shanahan...he does this garbage on purpose.
Yea now Purdy has as many loses in sb as mahomes, except without the ints. Mahomes a bum who lost to a 48 year old crippled Brady. Clown shoes
You know who has a really strong arm? Trey Lance.
@@scattau41😂😂 I see what you did there
The O-Line kept Purdy from having 3-4 TDs and 300+ Yards Passing. They weren't blocking on pass plays bro. When that's the case, you gotta just say fuck it and hit the underneath routes so you won't get sacked. Purdy can throw the deep ball just fine. Invest in the O-Line and the Niners will win the Super Bowl next season.
@@scattau41and Ryan leaf and Jamarcus Russell😅
@@bc_qbeval My man, two of Aiyuk's routes that were past the safety Purdy had plenty of time to make the throw. This BS excuse that he didn't have time when he had 1 sack and 0 hurries in the game is stupid. He's playing quick to get the ball out but he didn't need to every time and it cost them these deep shots.
Yup exactly they need to improve the offensive line, 5 pro bowlers on offense aren’t enough to carry the make a wish kid at QB
@erikdayne5429 I mean pass protection. Center, Guards, Tackles. Either you didn't know (and now you do) or did and chose to remain ignorant.
Make a Wish? Yea, alright, buddy. Learn ball.
@@BerryFruitMahomes was under more pressure. He was pressured and sacked more than Purdy. So blaming the o line isn’t a valid excuse. Try again, or maybe admit the little engine that could actually just couldn’t get it done. Brock Purdy is a better story than a player. Period. Defense held the Chiefs to 19 points and Purdy couldn’t lead an offense with 5 pro bowlers to score 20 to win a Super Bowl. What a joke. I hope you guys enjoy the Mr Irrelevant storyline, frankly I could care less about stories I just like football but I guess that’s just me.
@erikdayne5429. Mahomes was pressured less than half as much as Purdy. You can look it up.
@@ErikDaynewhat are you on brother
Had so much to do post Super Bowl, really enjoyed this breakdown and will check out the Mahomes analysis tomorrow. Keep up the great work!
I think it's pretty clear that Purdy got happy feet because the Chiefs pass rush was crushing the pocket back in his face. Still I think he played pretty well, and better than many of the Niners, who looked old and lazy.
And that was when they actually blocked the Chiefs at all....which they often did not do.
I don't think that was all of it. They plays were designed weird and a lot of them wouldn't have worked at all.
I need some JJ Mccarthy, Bo Nix and Drake Maye film breakdowns. You do such a great unbiased study.
to be fair to Purdy a lot of their 3rd and 4th down formations/blitzes were never practiced or ever done this season by the Chiefs, they were custom plays drawn up at halftime cuz Purdy was mincing the defense they were using in the first half. I was super impressed with this kids superbowl performance, outdueled Mahomes for most of the game. He is gonna be so much better next year having played this defense before and with his first offseason to learn and improve.
If true, then that means Reid and Spags laid a phenomenal coaching base and built excellent relationships with their players.
@@gen3kali877 yeah apparently the chiefs defensive staff was pretty impressed by purdy
Mincing the defense in the first half😂 dude had 10 points
@@warrenspecht9972Sure, but they couldn't stop him OR respond with enough points for a lead of their own for that first half.
Your videos are incredible. Been watching for years
AWESOME coverage all year.
Thanks for making these! Watching football games has been so much more enjoyable after watching these. I know so much more what to look for.
If i were Purdy, id have my eyes on Aiyuk on every pass play as my 1st read.
You'd get cut by Shanahan. I think he's probably a control freak
This is the best channel to watch to really understand what happened. How do you get this footage?
Lookup "All 22 NFL"
57:20 Kittle doesn't look to his left at all during this entire play. His whole focus is on 27 there. I don't know if that's because of him being set in the backfield where he's not used to playing, or if that's a scheme thing where he was told to focus there, but 22 could've been screaming "HERE I COME MOTHER F--R" and Kittle wouldn't have seen it.
Thanks for another great analysis. I'm looking forward to some JJ McCarthy. I'm just going to say it. He will end up the best QB in this class....
That was a great breakdown. Thanks JT.
Glad you liked it!
I think Kyle doesn't want him to be a runner. That would mean his play call doesn't work.
Thank you for telling it like it is.
now i see why BA was so frustrated
Aiyuk was getting loose all over the place. I can only assume that Purdy’s arm hasn’t fully recovered.
nah dude, offensive line. period.@@gen3kali877

@@gen3kali877it seemed more like Shanny schemed plays for Deebo and not ayuik. Ayuik just happened to beat his man
In the video at 16:41 look at it if Purdy decides to tuck it and run when Deebo is covered… 20-30 yard gain.
JT was tough on my favorites, but honest . Thanks JT. Those post game film reviews must be brutal in the NFL and college, especially after a loss.
JT i’ll never doubt you again, you called it man
Fixing the interior o line is a must in order for Purdy to take the next step as a player and maybe become a top 5 QB.
Hope for more checks at the line...KS take the leash off for Brock some...
CMC does exactly what you said Kittle didn't do on the last play of regulation. I can't believe you didn't point that out right away?
I missed the Kittle in the backfield. WTF? Had some buddies over watching. Bit distracted. Watching the breakdown, Niners gave it away. Not even mentioning the punt return turnover.
Is there anyway we can get the full 22 video for game break downs in the future?
Brocks gotta get a deep ball and confidence in it as well he can get to the next level
This is sarcasm right? He literally lead the league in efficiency on deep passes 20+ yards down field.

On that Kittle in the backfield play, I know Shanahan probably thinks of Kittle and Juzcyck as interchangeable, and maybe in the run game they are
However, here if he's going to have three receivers and wants McCaffrey to run a route from wide why not sub in Juzcyck for pass protection if you're having the sixth blocker line up in the backfield.
Definitely possible
Then put Trey Lance in the game. Oh wait they can’t.
@@scattau41 huh?
Hurts watching the video.... I love watching and learning this though..
I have high expectations that Purdy is going to film school this offseason.
Quarterbacks in the NFL take 6 to 7 years to reach their peak. If the Niners stay good Brock should improve quite a lot over the next 3 or 4 years. I'm looking forward to it.
Heard Brock’s nickname was Baby Boso because he’s got stout legs...not a cream puff
Love the work Bro! Smarter with every video J.T.!
Appreciate that
That 3rd and 4 after the 2minute warning is going to haunt me forever. Game is iced right there if executed.
Another free runner and Kittle is on wrong side of formation or does not step left.
Aiyuk had separation and he was running past the first down marker but Brock double clutched and didn’t throw to him
Yup, looks like Brock read the presnap as safety help over top aiyuk's route so he predetermined throwing to Jennings.
"Purdy missed more opportunities than I realized during the broadcast."
Seems like this happened to a lot of 49er fans.
Purdy seems not to check down with his other receivers sometimes, & he locks into one receiver and will force the ball to him. I'm sure he will work on this & get better. Given its only Purdy's 2nd year, he did very well.
Damn didn't realize he missed a TON! He made a ton of plays too but man
Yeah this tape is alarming for sure.
@@HockeyDudeJames2 Purdy doesn't check down for all of his receivers. And most likely because he is being rushed, due to a bad O-Line
