How to unlock BIOS Supervisor Password from Lenovo Thinkpad Laptop (no damage to laptop)

  • I demonstrate how to remove/clear BIOS supervisor password from lenovo thinkpad laptops. I have tested this method repeatedly to clear supervisor password of my personal thinkpad W520 and W510. I have been using these laptop since, with absolutely no problem.
Theoretically, this method should work most of the Lenovo laptops. All you need to do is to find the location of EEPROM chip on your laptop (You can google it !).

Should be mentioned somewhere that this only works with 30-series laptops and older (T530/T430/L530/L430/X230/etc.). On newer models (40-series and newer) Lenovo changed the way the passwords are stored and doesn't use the extra EEPROM anymore.

I can confirm that this worked on an x200s. The pins you need to connect are the SCL and the SCA pins. You need then to press F1 several times after you jumped the pins. Do not try to set "a new password" but leave it blank just as he says. Then the "release" of the pins at the right moment is crucial. Thanks a bunch man for this tutorial. Saved my month (or so).

i was able to unlock x61s. it took 3 attempts. during the last one i shorted the pins before powering up the laptop and tapped on F1 multiple times. i navigated to the "supervisor password - disabled" entry, hit Enter, released the pins and pressed Enter two more times (password and confirmation), then saved and restarted. it worked.

It makes the job somewhat easier.

Hi, I was struggling last night with my T400, managed to boot to BIOS but could not modify anything. Were you just shorting these two pins with screwdriver?
      Any grounding needed?
Just after shorting the pins, Did you have to press F1 to initiate booting to BIOS? Or does it start booting BIOS by itself after you shirt the pins? I'd appreciate some advise.

Thanks so much for this video! I purchased a msata drive to find out my BIOS was locked and I could not change boot order. After watching this video I was able to reset the supervisor password on my T520 that I had purchased online. Note to anyone attempting this. Make sure you are properly grounded and that you don't short any other portion of the board while you are attempting this. From all the posts I've read, they say that changing the password is impossible. I just wanted to not have a password there anymore and I followed the instructions and it worked. Was real easy. If you just want to change the password go to the supervisor password and type in your password. Then for the new password just click enter. Voila! A BIOS without a password!

    1. Press power button.
    2. When the ThinkPad logo show, press F1.
    3. Look at the processing symbol (The cylinder with an arrow)
    4. When it flashes the last time before the lock usually appears, short the two middle pins on the right side of the U53 chip.
    5. This got me into the bios.
    6. I released the short at this point.
    7. All the password settings were disabled, and i could not change anything.
    8. Press F10, and windows loaded right up.
I switched it off and on to see if the changes remained and they did.

Yes, I shorted the middle pins. You could try to short it everytime the symbol flashes once, this will stop the processing symbol, so you have to let it go again, wait for an other flash, and repeat this. To make sure you short it at the right time.

The above method, which I doubted will work, worked on my Thinkpad X201 . After googling, I came to the conclusion that the EEPROM for the X201Tablet version is in the same location. When you search online, the wrong documentation will point you to two very tiny holes on the motherboard to be the EEPROM location which if you are trying the above method, it is impossible and won't work. It might be the right one if you programme the EEPROM . To short EEPROM, its on the back side of the motherboard near the CPU/Heatsink. You gotta listen to the instructions word for word in order to achieve the result you are hoping for. I never thought this would work but I can confirm that it worked like a charm. Another video, on UA-cam suggested that you take out the CMOS battery and that was what I had initially done and it put me in a greater problem as the computer won't boot at all due to the Date/Time Error. Thanks for this beautiful video - a vitally beautiful video for my Thinkpad.

It's not required to use both I2C bus wires (SCL/SDA) to short them. Grounding one of them is enougth and thi sis more save. That's more reliable that this works for all Lenovo Thinkpads.
Lenovo distributes a Tool to correct the Serial# and Model#. That tool is allways used by lenovo to flash the bios. It's ask directly after start, what you want to do. Flashing the bios or "correct" the SN & Model#. A lenovo service technican who replace the main board use this too.

Hello, Arpan. When you say short the pins A & B, do you mean connect the wire to either A or B, or both by placing the wire between them. I can see it in the video but It's not clear to me how exactly you are shorting. Thanks

a document i wrote when bored ....lol ignore the misspelling i was on a roll ... here it is .....
    remove the large power battery
1st clear the bios , remove the cmos battery under the small door on back side
verify the bios is cleared you will get a time, date error and it will enter bios on f1
remove power and plug in the bios battery again
remove the bottom screws . all of them
remove the cd and 3 screws under the outside laptop edge after you pull it out
remove the keyboard , it slides up and out
remove the ribbon cables connectors by flipping up the black holddowns
unsnap all the top platen and remove it
flip the top over then unscrew the power switch and remove it and cable from the top
plug in the power switch cable to the mb , into the right connector and secure it.
locate the chip to be shorted pin 1,2 and have a small screwdriver ready to short it
(its nearly across from the power connector , chip is by self near 2 others simular to it)
    plug in ext usb keyboard
    plug in the dc power
be ready to short the chip 1/2 sec after you hit power switch
if you get a lot of beeps the short was done too fast and the keyboard strobe to that chip registers a stuck keyboard .. pull the power and try again.
if successful you will get several errors on screen ,, woo hooo, don't release the chip from being shorted yet ..
now go into bios .f1 as screen says , arrow 3 times to right to security , hit enter the password will say disabled ,, hit enter , your in password do it again hit enter , now save f10
or esc then exit then save, don't release the shorted chip till the screen comes back.
it will force the bios time date error again but this time the security will have the password
    disabled.
if you anytime get the lock symbal you failed , start over . power , short , error, pswd, save
its all in the timing of the 1st second after the keyboard strobes and your short
reassemble and test . you should still be able to see time date error and get in bios . ta daaa
now set the time and date and save and exit . done
sometimes you can't get back in bios again as its a design flaw .. you can't not w/o clearing the bios .grrrr

On the edge E430c the chip was u8. You can try shorting it out from under the cmos battery if you dont want to tear your laptop apart.. you just have to figure out which holes to stick the wires into.

am trying to buy a W520 and the seller indicates that it has some kind of lock (supervisor in bios?) and cannot boot from hard drive - anyway there is not one - but boots only from usb. Read some information about the eeprom chip and wanted to ask what are the odds in my case. The price is low enough to buy it for parts, excluding the mb, but i want to make use of the laptop.

But for Lenovo x200, it's impossible to reach the read mode. When you tape a wrong password, it blocked and that's all.
Do you know what to do ? I have moved the CMOS battery for 1, 5 or 10 minutes and it's same thing. Don't reach my Read mode or my Os.

I was given a ThinkPad T410 and a T420, both with supervisor passwords. I'm planning on soldering wires to the EPROM pins then mounting a tiny pushbutton switch somewhere in case of someone setting a supervisor password after I get them removed.
