The poreless thing...., I am a dermatology nurse practitioner and people be literally tripping because they want their pores to be gone and I, as the provider be like “where are they?!!” People we can not shrink our pores, we can minimize the appearance, but not get rid of them. We can use retina, chemical peels , and good skin care regimen, but get rid of them.... um nope. And the babies??!!! They come out the womb with filters on them!!! I saw a video from a plastic surgeon recently and he was saying that when he started doing surgery people would bring in images of celebrities and now more women are bringing in images of themselves with filters on and saying they want to look like that. That one stung when I think about who I extend grace to and how their attractiveness plays a role in that. I remember watching Oprah three decades ago one episode when her makeup artist showed some tips and tricks on her, and he was talking about how he had to paint on a fake nose bridge with makeup on her every day, because hers was that flat. I guess I can get wanting to have a stronger looking nose, it makes you look less cutesy, which was too important back in those days.
The super tiny nose trend is confusing. Same as all other plastic surgery trends. Body part styles being trendy is disconcerting.

I'm confused by how using filters is different than wearing makeup (for the record, I'm not against either even though I use neither). @Jouelzy, at the end of this video you say, "I want to enjoy me in its natural state because I don't want to have to change me for a standard that's just not realistic." Respectfully (and I mean that; I'm truly curious, not accusatory), you said that while wearing a face full of makeup. To me, the differences between a natural face and a made-up face are way more jarring than the changes that filters make. A lot of women prefer their made-up faces more than their natural faces. Should those women stop using makeup? Why is one okay and the other not? I feel like every justification for using makeup can also be applied to filters, so I'm interested in your thoughts on the differences between the two.

Another issue I'm seeing are very, young girls getting things done that will require expensive maintenance like veneers. I understand why Cardi B did it, but some have perfectly, nice, straight teeth, yet getting their teeth filed down for the chiclet look because IG made it so popular. They're so young that they have to take supplements to gain the necessary weight to get a BBL. This shouldn't be the norm.

The quote where Tolentino says people, like Kim who's labeled as "Patient 0" for Instagram Face, has definitely snatched features from all us "ethnic" girls to get that "exotic look" the 'gram goes crazy for was especially poignant since plastic surgeons have noted that procedures have gone up by 300%.
Basically, clients are coming in to get the very looks we all naturally have to hyper exaggerate them, like the KKKlan and other Instagirls. And, even the "poreless face" filter you mentioned is a procedure that is now exploited since once upon a time, one would sit all day in a makeup chair to get that type of "look," whereas now, you can have a procedure to make you look like a filter from IG or SnapChat.

I love this conversation, because it is really overdue. Body dysmorphia is no joke. We've always had the pressures of beauty standards that most of us never fit into, but now it's going to a new extreme. The bbl surgery is so got damn dangerous. If you inject fat in the wrong place you could cause cardiac arrest. I'm trying to love the person that I am. It's hard enough sometimes just loving yourself, but to add surgery to the mix just cause more damage because you will still find something you're lacking. I stay away from filters that change my face. I'll play with filters that add cat ears or something funny, but nothing to catfish the world or myself.

👏🏾THIS👏🏾WAS👏🏾SO👏🏾GOODT! Wow! I’m so glad that you have brought this dialogue to the table. It is a problem. It is interesting to see how we moved from touching up images in the magazines in the 80s and 90s to filters on social media. Either way throughout the generations the message always has reflected unachievable beauty standards which is needed to keep women tethered to products because they have been implicitly taught to hate themselves and the way that they look. Same commercialism game has been played for ages. And it sad!

    Sis,
I have seen this happen with young and older people (35+). My social media footprint is smaller than most (never had FB). But I have not been immune to these filters. I see pics posted of family and close friends and I found myself slightly distracted when seeing them in person. I found myself trying to figure out what was wrong; why the swollen nose, darker eye color, wider face. Then I realized it was nothing wrong with that person, it was my perception of them that was flawed/false.
Wow, try my best to not be an active participant but even the “receiver” willingly participates...🤔

Hey Jouelzy I’m just commenting on both uploads at this point lol. But my 2 cents is that the filters are an extension of makeup... what does makeup do if not change your whole face (when you want it to).... some stuff seems dangerous when a better word is predatory, women particularly have been targeted in these ways since the dawn of time, altering our appearance to be more aesthetically pleasing is a very normalized aspect of femininity. More interestingly, I’ve been seeing folks online critique the performance of femininity which I find super compelling as a talking point. In a technology-saturated sex appeal first personality last world, why wake up and do your makeup to look pretty when you can simply flip to the perfect filter.... this shit is only gonna get more prevalent. Question: Isn’t makeup, particularly glam makeup (heavy eye makeup, lashes, contouring, highlight, lip plumbers, etc,) just the IG filter of yore? All of the makeup techniques are trying to achieve what filters achieve more easily. Wouldn’t our utilization and reliance on makeup be just as dangerous as utilizing and relying on filters? Don’t they both perpetuate a state of vanity due to some level of insecurity? Not shading anyone, just interested in different takes on the topic.

To some extent, of course, but I think utilising doesn’t necessarily have to be the same as being reliant. Make up can be used as a part of creating a different image, and not necessarily thinking that that is OUR image, but rather an image we want to present to others for a certain occasion/in a certain situation, for us and them to feel a certain way, for example to feel more confident, or to match a certain style. While using filters can create a certain caricature of yourself that you present to others, all the time, thus becoming reliant on it.

Thank you for making this video, Jouelzy. I can say from PERSONAL experience...those filters are a rabbit hole of HELL, DOOM, and GLOOM under the guise of GLAMOR & BEAUTY! I fell DEEP down that rabbit hole earlier this year (pre-pandemic)...unintentionally.
I am, in fact, someone who suffered from poor body image and low self-esteem for a LONG time. I know all about filters though. Back before these social platforms existed, there was the "beauty" filters that came on our phones. I used to be OBSESSED with them. Not because it changed my face shape but because it made my skin smooth and flawless! (I've had a long struggle with blemished skin, too). I envied EVERYONE'S skin. I felt like I was the ONLY ONE walkin' with jacked-up skin! Now I've never been one to be on Snapchat though... I have one but I never really use it. I don't get the hype and its function doesn't appeal to me. But one day I finally re-downloaded the app and logged in and I played around with some of the filters. (What else was there to do on there? Lol). Some of them were cute and fun like ones with the animal ears and noses and colorful sparkle effects, etc...but GUUURRRL, when I got to those soft glam, sparkling face-changing filters...it was OVER. So many things happened in my brain at the same time: First, I was so AMAZED at the fact that I was so "PRETTY" and I actually thought I looked BETTER. Then I took pictures in the same pose-with the filters and without the filters and I compared them. I got INSTANTLY depressed when I saw how much "better" I looked with certain features altered: my eyes, my nose, my lips, my face shape, the clearer skin. I cried. I spiraled downward out of control! I couldn't BELIEVE that I was really "THAT FUCKIN' UGLY! LOOK HOW MUCH BETTER I LOOK WITH THESE FILTERS!" There was a sort of cognitive dissonance going on inside of me: I sighed with relief to FINALLY learn the secrets of all these beautiful women on social media who use these filters RELIGIOUSLY and don't even look like that in real life AND simultaneously I lamented about why couldn't *I* look like this in real life. (*MAKE IT MAKE SENSE*)!!! I ended up snapping on my man about it when I cried to him because he said to hell with social media and those filter. He INSISTED that this so-called "glowed up," altered me is what he sees when he looks at me everyday anyway. I was so insecure and convinced of how ugly I am that I couldn't even truly take in and appreciate what he was saying. 💔
To soar so HIGH and get so ADDICTED to filters within the first 20 minutes of playing around with them just to CRASH and BURN with despair within that same hour is such a painful thing to acknowledge and admit. My self-loathing went into OVERDRIVE...it took FOREVER to recover. I STILL struggle with reminding myself that NONE OF THIS ONLINE SHIT IS REAL.
This...obessesion over beauty, perfection, flawlessness that has a grip on the world at large is dangerous enough as it is...but these things are going by WHOSE definition?
Needless to say, I kept those pictures to myself and I ultimately broke out of that spell and I actually came across those filtered pictures on my Google Drive recently. Seeing them with fresh eyes, those pictures are absolutely HIDEOUS and I can't believe just EARLIER THIS year I actually thought that these were the PRETTIEST PICTURES OF MYSELF I'D EVER seen...even though it was all an illusion from a damn APP.
NEVER. EVER. EVER AGAIN. I love myself just the way I am. Is there room for improvement? Of course, but that's more on a health and wellness tip, not giving in to the delusions of what society considers beautiful.
Again, THANK YOU for this video! 💖💖💖💖

Even watching hygiene routines and you see people using 10+ products just to shower to achieve "soft glowing skin". I deleted instagram because of the anxiety I would get after posting and checking likes comments etc. A good social media break every once in a while helps to balance me out.

I love listening to you talk. It’s always so thought provoking. This was such a good topic. I try to limit the use of filters myself. I’m cuter then the filters make me anyway.

I deleted my Snapchat 2 years ago because of the filters. I had moments in which I felt ugly without the filters and I confronted some truths within myself. So many people are influenced by normed desirability and physical beauty rather than a broader sense of beauty.

I literally did a IG live talking about this exact things a few months back. It’s very dangerous & mentally unhealthy in my opinion.

Some people think I’m so dramatic but even back when Snapchat was out I didn’t and still don’t use face featuring offering filters for that reason like you said ... I can’t imagine becoming dependent on them and then looking at my self in the mirror confused b/c I’m so used to this “AI” version of myself
