    100 billion+ dollars have been invested in making new chip factories here in the US, and some of those factories will be finished around 2025, so right around the corner. Things are going in the right direction again, it just needs more time.

      China doesn't focus on short term profit, China focuses on 10-50 year plans. It's only a matter of time before China literally becomes #1. If you see the current direction of the USA for the past 30+ it's obvious the USA is falling behind.

  • @yolandaperry86

    America and it's allies (mainly Taiwan) still dominate the microchip and semiconductor supply chain. America is #1 on the supply chain (design) and Taiwan is #2 (production). The most technologically advanced chips go to the American Military which is part of the reason why we have the most advanced military in the world. This seems to be the main driving force behind China becoming so aggressive with Taiwan and threatening to invade them more in the recent years in my opinion. If they successfully invade Taiwan that would put them in the best position they have ever been in to try to overtake America as the top global superpower. That is why America will be all hands on deck if Taiwan is invaded by China.

      If China invades Taiwan and appears to be successfully conquering the island, there should be more than a few American cruise missiles aimed at the fabs so the Chinese don't get a functioning microchip manufacturing capacity; they get a smoking ruin.

    • @ratinthecat
      @ratinthecat Рік тому +4

      But then the lithography machines that are used by the most advanced chip fabs are made exclusively in Europe. So even if the PRC retakes Taiwan, then they'll not be able to move on to more advanced processes or maybe even get replacement parts without the cooperation of a Dutch company, ASML.

    • @tommyzty1089
      @tommyzty1089 Рік тому +5

      @@ratinthecat facts. Also even if the CCP somehow secured the ASML machines, the TSMC engineers and workers in Taiwan wouldn’t just freely cooperate with them. The Taiwan government could also destroy the chip factories should China captures the island.

    • @halicarnassus8235
      @halicarnassus8235 Рік тому

      Could that be another reason why China has not tried to take Taiwan? Notice I did not say take back. Because the people of Taiwan fled to the island from mainland China when the CCP Communists took over China. CCP China actually drove the Chinese Capitalists to the Island when the Communist Party purged Capitalists from China after they usurped Power. The Chinese who fled to Taiwan knew that the dangers of staying in communism would affect their families.

    From what I know, the problem of the exponential
    growth is that transistors have become so small ( ie billions of transistors on a fingertip sized chip) that we’re reaching the edge of possibility with our understanding of physics.
    They’re already atomically sized . Anything smaller would cause problems because of quantum physics .

    • @captain_crunk
      @captain_crunk Рік тому +5

      That's true. However, newer chip architectures are starting to stack transistors, so Moore's Law is going to be OK for the foreseeable future. In the mean time, compute-in-memory architectures will continue to improve, and so I don't think we'll ever see an end to exponential growth. In fact, I think the rate of change could actually increase due to the progress made in quantum computing. The same evolution that traditional chips saw in the past is now taking place in quantum processors, which is kinda scary given the absolutely colossal potential they contain in certain types of tasks. Combine that with vastly improved AI that will be available in, say, 10 or 20 years...let's just say that my bucket list isn't collecting much dust these days. I'm not saying the end is near, but having that much power opens the door for something truly catastrophic in a way that makes climate change or nuclear war look like a walk in the park. Following things out to their logical conclusions, the implications associated with the combination of AI that has evolved several generations along with the processing power of quantum computing makes our current [total lack of] awareness seem like a parent allowing a toddler to play with a loaded firearm. We have to be aware of the potential problems we could be seeing in a decade or two. It's absolutely possible that we don't progress as fast as I'm implying here, but there is a non-trivial chance that we do, so it's probably smart to plan for the worst and hope for the best. Given our track record I'm not all that optimistic, but hey, fingers crossed :)

  • @BTinSF

    There is very little outsourcing of semiconductors to China. The world's largest "fabs" which actually make semiconductors, often on US designs, are in Taiwan and South Korea. However the US is building a lot of new manufacturing capacity. That takes roughly 2-4 years from turning dirt to chips coming out the door. Also, most of the equipment needed to make chips is from the Netherlands (ASML) and the US. Export of this equipment to China is now banned. So China is unlikely to be at the leading edge of chip making for a long time if ever. The latter part of the video explained this pretty well. I would add the Blokes are wrong that the US wants everybody to buy from us. What we want is not having to buy from any source with which some day we may be at war or embargoed. If the UK or the Netherlands (as now) want to design and produce chips, we will be happy to buy them. The UK company ARM already does a good job and, of course, the Netherlands leads in the manufacturing equipment.

    I've been privileged to have worked on "the" EUV light source for over 20 years. It's not rocket science. Rocket science is easy.
    EUV (13.5nm) light is needed for the densest layers. Prior to EUV becoming viable 197nm and 248nm DUV light was the state of the art. Immersing the wafer in water enabled enabled 197nm to print finer detail (via index of refraction change- think of putting a stick in a bathtub full of water and how it appears to bend). Double patterning further pushed the limit.
    EUV technology is forbidden to be exported to China. It's so complex that reverse engineering is impossible. Hence why these Chinese startups failed.

      There are plenty of deposit of rare earth elements(REE) around the world. China used to hold near monopoly on the production of these elements because no one wants to process these insanely toxic metals. In 2010 when China increased export quotas on REE, the rest of the world increased their production greatly. China has dropped their quota in 2015 because they lost their case to the US, EU and Japan in 2014. Nonetheless, the rest of the world have since made it a mission that China will not hold a bottleneck in REE.
