White Cloak Youth Group Councilor is who I was born to play. Also, because people like to put words in my mouth, just because I criticized some elements of the episode doesn’t mean I hated it. Please listen to what I actually say and don’t take me out of context to push your own view either way.

My best guess on the barn scene:
Dana, the dark friend from e3 said she summoned a fade and you can’t outrun a fade. That said, I think the fade showed up to take or kill Mat and Rand, but because Mat is so affected by the ruby blade he took from Shadar Logoth that he actually sensed the fade and chased it into the house while the fade went on a killing spree and trying to hide from Mat. It’s already been noted that Mat’s dagger was clean when he pointed at the fade and there was no blood on his clothes. The ruby dagger will be explained in later episodes, so I won’t say anything about that now.

I think the mass Healing was necessary to reflect to the audience Nynaeve's incredible strength in the power (and in Healing in particular). We've seen several cases of an Aes Sedai healing one person at this point, so seeing Nynaeve heal just Lan in a burst of anger/emotion wouldn't really seem very awe-inspiring or powerful. The Heal bomb made it clear truly how powerful she is. Personally, I loved that scene and found it very effective.

Agree with your take on this, also I don't think everyone else was dying in that scene only Lan, the rest of them were either stunned or just wounded to varying degrees and he was the only one she was trying to heal. Everyone else that she healed was just overflow. This was a way to establish just how incredibly powerful she is with the one power. Also it kind of plays into the whole "who is the Dragon Reborn" mystery approach they want to use to create more intrest in the Two Rivers group as a whole and make everything less Rand specific. Oh yeah, after that whole translating the last thing my Mother said to me before she died scene, Nyneave is totally and completely in love with Lan everything she did in that cave made perfect sense for her character.

What do you mean, "even though I'm kinda wondering, like, how would Nyaneve track Lan? He's, like the best at not being found"? She specifically tracked him in the books after Shadar Logoth, which was the first time in the books he was strongly impressed with her. In the books her father trained her in her woodsy ways, but here it was probably the wisdom that raised her.
And for Nynaeve outburst moment, I just assumed she channeled "dirtily", giving of a lot of light as a byproduct.

she used the one power to track him just like she used the power to become Wisdom at a young age - she just didn't realize she was doing it. This is not a gender thing where the story is saying she couldn't possibly track because she is a girl. It's simply saying that Lan is a professional Warder and he DOES have the skill to evade her tracking. But he doesn't know yet that she is a bad ass with the power. She is literally a sleeping giant.

There isn't a good reason to assume she did anything with the power. As for 'Lan should be good enough', we actually don't know how good at evading detection he is, as it stands, he might be less competent simply for relying on the warder cloak at times, and he probably wasn't expecting on being tracked by a consummate professional, when on the run from trollocs and whatever the bat creature is (for some reason I just can't recall the name of it). @@Icarion1 That wasn't a useful indicator though. That came into play later when she pinpointed the inn. It was explained that in that power, she needed to be in close enough proximity (like being in the city helped), she could get a good location. It is nothing like the warder bond, where a person knows where another person is at all times, or at least the direction.
Besides, this with the inn, and her power here, it all came after. After the party split. No, we are talking about the first time Nyneave came and tracked Lan and co, in the woods. And that is the thing - she tracked them as a party, not just the good antiwoodsmen come to think of it. Book vet here: I have to say that I’m loving Nynaeve as much as I did in the books (just sooner than I came around in the novels). The final scene got me. Logain’s reaction to the power (no matter how he sensed it) was a fantastic way to showcase his realization of being inadequate (in the big picture) and understanding Moraine’s message. No matter how powerful he is, there’s always going to be someone more so. While the stilling portion of the scene was a bit janky as you said, I FELT Logain’s pain more than I ever did reading the novels. My wife (not a reader of the books) physically had goosebumps when Nynaeve broke through her block. Mine came with Logain’s stilling. Well worth the watch so far, even with the few niggles I’ve had. Nynaeve needs to be angry to channel because her anger overrides the terrible fear Nynaeve has of all that power. She hides in her anger. Echoing what others in the comments have said, I think the final scene from Moiraine entering the cave to speak with Logain through Nynaeve's burst of healing went over really well with non-book readers. My husband, a man who generally picks everything apart in every show, was like WOW, and was very invested in what was happening. He only asked me why she hadn't healed anyone before then, which I told him would be explored more in the future, so WAFO. It's good to have questions, it's something that makes people want to watch the next episodes! He was totally emotionally invested in that entire scene. Also, he already loves Moiraine, said he just loved the scene with her manipulating Logain, while also easing her own doubts, and how fearlessly she confronts him even while she is essentially alone and he is unshielded. Last note on Mat, I actually loved that they made everyone, even book readers, think for a split second that Mat might have murdered people in his own fit of madness, but then gave us that probably out. I am LOVING how each scene is new and fresh and a total surprise to even long time book fans! Also, I cried when the little girl tried to give Mat her Birgitte doll. Hey Daniel, the only thing I see wrong with your redo scene is that I’m not sure that would convince viewers that nynaeve healing just one man is *that* impressive.. not impressive enough for Logain to get distracted enough anyways. Her instantly healing a whole room, however, serves that intent a little better. I think that was the intention, anyways, and personally, I had a small little tear trying to come out at that scene so it was emotional enough ;)

I think Daniel is underestimating the scene's actual effectiveness and his proposed re-shoot would land with less punch. The non-readers I watched the show with both said that it was clear that Nynaeve was worried about Lan exclusively, and that she obviously didn't know what she was doing but just wanted to save him. She throws so much power into her accidental healing that she healed the entire room and not just Lan. So, for at least two non-readers they are at least primed for the idea that Nynaeve can be incredibly strong but only in certain situations.

I agree. The scene didn’t have as much emotional weight because of the shotgun blast, as he put it, but the point was to show Nynaeve’s power. It’s later revealed that the Aes Sedai are much weaker than they have been in the past, and that Elaine, Egwene, and Nynaeve are more powerful than most if not all of the other Aes Sedai of the current time period in terms of the amount of raw power they can wield. Nynaeve is even more powerful than the other two. Healing one slit throat doesn’t demonstrate that raw power. The show runners wanted to show she’s the most powerful person the room (cave) even though what she does is by instinct. I’m sure her power will be a major talking point for the Aes Sedai in the next episode.

When it comes to the hand motions, I think they’re expanding on a minor theme in the books that the tower trained aeis sedai tend to use unnecessary hand motions because that’s how they were taught those weaves but people like the kin (although they may not know as many weaves as an aeis sedai) are faster channelers because they don’t rely on hand motions because the kin specifically try to hide their ability from others

True, and its super obvious when comparing Logain and the Aes Sedai's weaves. Logain's far more mobile than the Aes Sedai when channeling since he doesn't waste time on poses and hand signs.
I'm curious if they'll have Egwene, Elayne, and Nynaeve pick up the hand signs too or keep it more natural. With Nynaeve being so independent and largely self-taught and Egwene getting so much of her training from the Wise Ones, I feel like it'd make more sense for them to not do it

    • @AntlersAreCool
      @AntlersAreCool 2 роки тому +2

I agree and imagine as the show goes on that we will see the distinction between 'tower trained' weavers and instinctual (or some other training method) weavers become more apparent. Logain's channelling looked very different from the sisters, Nynaeve's blast at the end of the episode different again.
I think it also serves the purpose of making the weaving more explicit and interesting for a visual medium. Which, will likely pay off down the track when we see weaving from different groups. I imagine that the Wise Ones chanenling will be chorographed to look distinct from the Kin and they'll both look different to the Windfinders.
Which could lead to some cool mixed styles for Egwene, Nynaeve and Elaine.

The reds are depicted as "evil" in the early books, it helps solidify and explain the fear a male channeler would feel against the Aes Sedai. It isn't until later that they become more nuanced.
Nynaeve finds Lan and the gang by tracking them in the book so there is nothing strange with that. "There was nowhere for you to go except Baerlon. To be safe, though, I followed your trail." - Nynaeve, chapter 16, EOTW. Lan is "truly surprised" by this.
The clean clothes makes a clear distinction between the ordinary people and "important" people like the white cloaks and Aes Sedais. A nice touch here is that the Edmond's Fielders all have dirty clothes which strengthens the notion that they are common folk.
I agree that the battle sequence was a bit messy but I enjoyed the fact that it was not dark or raining. This I think should be more related to the touch of the dark one, providing even more of an ominous feeling when shadowspawn are involved.
The mass healing was a good way to show Nynaeves power without having to have forced dialogue about her strength in the one power and the fact that Login reacted so strongly to it keeps the identity of the dragon reborn still uncertain. I also don't think that Login could see her weaves rather he saw a strong light because she actually created a strong light while healing. There’s a couple of possibilities here:
      1. Men can see women’s weaves (yet Moiraine explicitly said women can’t see mens weaves earlier in the episode, so this is either a contradiction or an odd choice)
      2. Nynaeve weaves light to distract Logain. This may or may not be her first time channeling; if it isn’t her first time, the light could be a distraction she made intentionally.
      3. The light represents Ta’veren nature, and Logain is able to see Ta’veren like how Siuan can in the book. Nynaeve, therefore, is the fifth ta’veren
This seems like a lore break on the surface, but I can’t believe Rafe would let something like that slide without an explanation.

Nynaeve healing the whole room may give us less emotional depth than if she focused on just Lan, but I think they were trying to show the immense amount of power that she is capable of. Earlier in that episode they remind us of how Healing someone will drain an Aes Sedai's energy, in proportion to the severity of the wound and how many people have to be Healed. Seeing Nynaeve, completely untrained in the use of the One Power, work on a room full of people who are on the brink of death tells the audience that she has an immense capacity for power, and an instinctive understanding of the various Weaves used in Healing. And even Logain is impressed. And remember that this happens shortly after Moiraine reminds Logain that the true Dragon Reborn will be vastly more powerful than him. While your rewrite has merit, some thoughts on why the Nynaeve scene works as is, especially if you put yourself in non-reader shoes: 1. coming just after Moiraine's speech, it sets up another "who is the dragon reborn?" feint to go along with what Thom said about Mat (and Egwene apparently being "powerful"), 2. It makes it super clear how crazy powerful Nynaeve is, again compared to how Lan said earlier how Egwene is apparently powerful and we haven't even seen her do anything. If she's powerful, what is Nynaeve? and finally 3. having such a big outburst will make her later training and having the hate/anger block really easy to plot. Maybe you'd call it clumsily handled, but again, for non-readers it will be a really simple juxtaposition between "healed 10 people in one go" and "can't light a candle" (or whatever other novice task she's trying to do).

In terms of writing the show for non-readers, it's cleverly done to be honest. It's just that readers so obviously know which it is, so they obviously can only go so far in setting up the "mystery" without seeming ridiculous.

This episode was a 9/10 for me (my previous ratings: Ep1: 5/10, Ep2: 7.5/10, Ep3: 7/10). They managed to fit in a huge amount of lore and character progression in an hour without feeling rushed. Sure, the technical execution wasn't perfect, but I think they delivered on the story beats and foreshadowing really well. I actually think it was a good idea for Nynaeve to "Mass Heal" the group to show the extent of her power, rather than just healing one person. It quickly sets up that she is much, much more powerful than any other channeler we've seen so far, referencing how Moiraine said Loghain's power was a speck compared to the Dragon Reborn.

@@brednbudr2406 The thing is the show is actually being more subtle and less revealing about a number of things at this exact point. I know this because I've basically just got to the point in the book where Thom fights the Myrddraal so it's still pretty fresh. We've actually seen more hints and straight up reveals in the book about Rand, Perrin, and Mat at this point in the story. The show has barely shown anything about Rand except that he broke down a door that was supposed to be super strong. We know that some wolves seem to like Perrin for some reason. And there's not much more about Mat except that he's got the dagger. We know more about all three of them in the books already, and there have been a number of other clues sprinkled around as well that former readers should pick up on.
By contrast they've revealed a fair amount more about the Aes Sedai, Moiraine, and now some of Nynaeve's abilities. Though Moiraine does state right out that both she and Egwene are unusually strong in the book.
While the show is taking a different angle with it, there's also a particular scene where it's strongly implied that all five of them are important by this point in the book, so I don't find it to be that big of a change really.

And with the party not split up yet, following a one track story line makes the structure weird as they have to just shoe in plot points to get from A to C while also finding places to shoehorn exposition to give some background to the story.

16:30 I actually liked that Nynaeve's channeling wasn't focused on one person. I think the scene emotionally was focused on Logain and the audience. For Nynaeve, I don't think the outburst was because of one person - I don't think she has enough of a connection with Lan yet. But the whole thing, all the violence, after her village, after escaping the trollocs and killing, after the battle in the woods and having to kill again (iirc there was a shot focusing on her face to show how it was affecting her emotionally), the whole situation is the straw that broke the camel's back for her. For me, it didn't need to focus on one personal connection to make me care about the audience.
More than that, in terms of emotion, this wasn't just about her feelings. This was about Logain seeing the truth of Moraine's words, suddenly moving from absolute certainty in himself and his path to seeing someone who eclipses him, which makes his pushing aside of others' warnings an issue of pride, not of purity of purpose. And the scene is about those thoughts being what his distraught mind focuses on while he goes through what Tom was describing earlier. The gentling is a breaking of his power literally, but also a breaking of his spirit metaphorically. But maybe toward an end...? Because taming a horse is also called breaking or gentling, right?
And, regarding the audience, it supposed to pay off the whole "who's the fifth" by showing she's got the power to be the dragon - the show is really pushing that it could be any of them, and really leaning on Mat and Nynaeve right now.

Thing is tho, in the book, when talking with Moiraine back in Edmonds Field, Nynaeve spoke about how seeing an injury would make her mad and she would heal them seemingly miraculously. We saw that here.
All in all, the best episode so far to me. Mat Rand and Thom were just next level, and Perrin with Ila resonated so hard. In the books, Elyas chastises Ila for pushing her belief system too hard, so that was true to source. I like the idea of Logain’s actions in Ghealdan being the series open. I get what you said about the Battle feeling like a LARP, but not all battles have to be Helms Deep. We’ll get to Dumai’s Wells soon enough

Still in this shot, Logain had to blind his eyes from Nynaeve in her channeling outburst. But I think it really was visible light and not just the channeling, as we even see Nynaeves skin turn reddish-bright as the one power filled her. The light being emmited is probably just a side effect of her being unexperienced with that power and doing several things at once → healing, radiating light and I think also pushing out a small shockwave, at least it looks like that to me.

Long time book reader, this was a 9/10 episode for me. I wanted to see the fade fight a few seconds more, and I agree that it it would have helped a lot if the location of the battle was clearer, but overall the emotional beats and the building of the layers to that final pay off was excellent as a piece of TV that will appeal to a broad camp of non-book readers and book readers.
For example, about 9-eves block and anger. At this stage nobody watching knows that anger is the specific nature of her block (and we dont even know for sure that this will be retained in this show?). What we saw was that emotional response (noooo!) of somebody that we know she likes, possibly dying. This fits with what we have been shown in the episode, with what is established. Having all the other AS in the room disabled also then helps show that she is the only person who can do something. The blinding light part, we could simply say was some effect that she accidentally made. Very few people will actually pick up on this or care. And finally, the hand motions for linking and severing most viewers probably thought were cool, because they helped to visually telegraph what was going on.
Overall, what we saw was maximum impact for that broad spectrum of viewers, and most of your issues seem to be more book / lore centric. IMDB score for this episode is now at 9.2 with over 2000 reviews. And again and again, every other review is saying "I wasn't sure at first about this series, but now I am sold." So, the proof really is in the pudding there. They absolutely made the right call with how the handle this scene. It does generate some questions about the possibly lore implications, but 9/10 people aren't going to be emotionally held back from a scene due to lore.

I think part of the reason that they had Nynaeve heal the entire room was to give a reference to just how powerful she is as a channeller, both to set up her as a character but also to hint towards her being a potential DR candidate. She's not just healing one person, she's healing an entire room in an instant. That's not to say your criticism for the scene wasn't valid, but I get why they went for it.
Same deal with Logain apparently seeing Nynaeve's weaves, which I can kinda excuse as him just going "holy shit she just did an AoE heal that's wild ur crazy bro". Likewise, him sort of just giving up seems like that was in response to him having a mini crisis about no longer being the front runner for DR. Hey Daniel! Thank you for all the time you put into your entertaining content!
I gotta say, I was actually pleasantly surprised by the first 4 episodes. I was apprehensive to watch them because I didn't want to feel tons a disappointment, but about half way into the first episode I stopped comparing it to the books and just enjoyed it for what it was.
There were only a couple things that were too big of a difference that it kind of took me out of it, but like you I loved the performances of the actors and actresses! So far they have all REALLY nailed it. Rosamund NAILED Moraine, Lan and Nynaeve's character development/relationship is spot on, Matt and Rand and Perrin's characters are SO well done. Even the Tinker's were pretty well done in my opinion--I know they are not verbatim from the book, but they really captured the SOUL of the Tuatha'an with the conversation between Ila and Egwene/Perrin.
    *SPOILER*
I also get the feeling that the setup of Mattrim and Nynaeve being channelers and possibly being the Dragon Reborn is just a setup for the true reveal later, so I can let that go of that whole, "don't know if the dragon will be a boy/girl" thing.
I am having a little more difficulty letting the channeling hand motions go, but I also see how they didn't do that for Logain or Nynaeve, so what I think they are doing is setting up a feeling of channelers that don't need any crazy "assistance" of hand motions to mean they have immense power, kind of like how POWERFUL wizards in the Harry Potter franchise didn't need wands for some stuff.
I do need to disagree with one point--when Egwene and Perrin split off I really only got a feeling of a "Philia"(familial) type of love, nothing romantic, so I think there won't be any awful developments there.
    Anyways, love your Vids Daniel!
