  • In this video I talk about the disappearance of 52 year old Jeffrey Boucher from the town of Whitby, Ontario, Canada on January 13 of 2014.
    Jeffrey taught business and geography at a nearby high school, and he lived in Whitby with his wife and two daughters. He was very active and he was a well-loved member of his community. Every morning, Jeffrey would wake up at 5 am to go for an hour-long solo run before work. The town of Whitby borders Lake Ontario and a large nature conservation area, and Jeffrey would usually run in this expansive natural area.
    On January 13 of 2014, Jeffrey did not return home from his usual morning run, and this led to a massive and well-publicized search of the area. Helicopters, civilian searchers, search and rescue teams, Durham Police officers and an underwater side-scanning robot were not able to find any sign of Jeffrey. Multiple tracking dogs were unable to find his scent trail, although inclement weather likely hampered their ability to do so. Jeffrey's family were adamant that Jeffrey was absolutely not at risk of suicide or running away and that he was very happy and stable.
    On March 11 of that year, someone walking in the area of Heydenshore Pavilion found one of Jeffrey's shoes. This led to another extensive search, but no further clues were found.
    Then on the morning of March 29 of that year, another person found Jeffrey's second shoe in the same area as his first. That same day, a man walking his dog found the deceased body of Jeffrey Boucher. Strangely, Jeffrey's body was completely naked and partially encased in ice.
    Autopsy and coroner results were inconclusive, and they were not able to determine his cause of death. Durham Police stated that they though Jeffrey had accidentally fallen off the pier and died in the cold waters of Lake Ontario.

    Very Interesting ( I actually remembered this case somewhat) although I had no idea about the strange circumstances that you addressed.
    Well done .
    Look forward to more missing cases .

      Hey thanks for watching and I appreciate when people take the time to comment - yeah to me this is one of the more unusual cases in Ontario from the past 10 years or so. Still can't believe anyone is watching my little videos but I'm glad they're providing some value to people out there. Cheers mate!

    Happy to see a video from Ontario! I’m originally from Manitoulin Island, up in the north. Sad story, but glad the body was found, for his family to have some closure. Great video!

    I believe when you're in the advanced stages of hypothermia, there's a phenomenon that you get a sudden feeling of being warm and start removing clothing. I remember reading/watching something about that, so that might explain him having no clothes when he was found. But yes that is a very strange case, considering they can't say or even hypothesize how he died.

    • @truckermre

      You're right - that can definitely happen in cases of hypothermia, I'm just puzzled by the location where he was eventually found/allegedly disappeared from. It was a really busy populated area, and it seems if he encountered any sort of trouble then help was really close. Who knows, always fascinated by this story. Cheers mate

    thanks for sharing... so weird he didn't have clothes when they found him. Lots of cases where bodies are missing a lot of clothing, heard hypothermia can cause people to take off clothing but this case seems weird. Thanks for sharing!

    Nude? The only reason that I can think of, for that to happen, is that is what people do for the 'polar bear plunge'. Would possibly explain why his shoes were found. Nice vid, very direct and respectful.

      @strangenorth  5 місяців тому +1

      Yeah interesting angle never though of that - a lot of people were also pointing out that people have been known to strangely remove clothing in later stages of hypothermia. Who knows, to me this was one of the more unusual cases in Ontario form the past decade or so. Thanks for watching!

      @@strangenorth Usually at the end of December, and early January, I think is the most popular time to do the 'plunge'. Sort of like a New Years thing. As for undressing while experiencing hypothermia, that is called paradoxical undressing. This is an unusual case, but I cannot speculate far from my observation by much. It's an unfortunate event regardless.
      Edit: typo: 'early January'

    The fact that Jeffrey was naked indicates that he was suffering from exposure to cold. It is known that people would disrobe trying to get cooler which indicates the last stage of hyperthermia.

    • @strangenorth
      @strangenorth  5 місяців тому +1

      You're right, that is fairly common in hypothermia cases. What sort of confounds me is the location where he was found and allegedly disappeared - it's actually a fairly populated area and not at all remote. Help was really close by in case he got into trouble in that area, unless he somehow removed his own clothing after becoming hypothermic in the water - but that doesn't seem probable either. Who knows, one of the more unusual cases for sure. Thanks for watching!

    I think its very fishy! The way they found him makes no sense. Ice bathing was not popular yet either when this event occurred.
    Sounds like a case that should be reinvestigated.

    It is very common for somebody to fall into freezing water and go into cardiac arrest. Being naked could be a sign of hypothermia. The last an finaly stage where you feel hot and he could have fallen back into the water where he became encased I'm Ice. Ice pushes up on to the shore as thaw sets in. I don't think it's as mysterious as it sounds. Just my 2 cents

    • @strangenorth
      @strangenorth  5 місяців тому

      Yeah that very well could have happened, it's really hard to say for sure. My main issue with the removal of clothing as a result of hypothermia is just that he was completely naked. I can see removing a jacket and pants potentially, but everything being removed seems weird to me. It's also a fairly populated area and help would have been relatively close by. But there's just limited information and this case has always stuck with me. Thanks for watching and I appreciate when people take the time to leave feedback, cheers

    I remember this very sad case.
    I like to watch criminal profiler Pat Brown on youtube and recently for a case (not this one) she stated that many who know water safety will actually try and take their clothes and shoes off if they fall into the water, as wet clothing is heavy. Makes absolute sense. Perhaps that's why he was naked, and succumbed to hypothermia before he could swim back to shore?
    Also, a very strange thing happens to many people when they are hypothermic - they actually start to feel very hot and will take off their clothing. I don't know if that would happen in water, but it definitely can happen on land. The air temperature wasn't cold enough that day to become hypothermic (looked around -3 or so according to historical data).
    I have no idea what to make of him being encased in ice. If he was running it would make sense he might have been warm but I don't know if the immediate surrounding water can freeze around someone. The weather in general was abnormally cold that year, so perhaps that wouldn't have been unusual. Or was the water frozen and he was in it?
    I for one would like to see more missing or unusual cases on your channel. :)

    • @strangenorth
      @strangenorth  5 місяців тому

      Thanks for watching and I appreciate your input. I've considered that as well - that he became hypothermic and removed his clothing, A lot of people seem to think that happened in this case. I have my doubts that he would have been able to take off all of his clothing in the water, it seems difficult but not out of the question. It also struck me as odd that he was completely naked, not just missing his jacket or something.
      It sounds like he was found on shore partially encased in ice, and yes - it was still winter and very cold generally. To me the strangest thing was just the fact that he was missing all of his clothing, and also the fact that his shoes were removed but found in the same area that his body was. Just very limited information available and the coroner could not officially determine his cause of death.
      I'm glad you enjoy these videos, definitely not my most viewed but it's a subject that's interested me since I learned about this old man that disappeared from a church camp I attended in my youth.
      I'm actually working on a video on the strange case of Elisa Lam that I'm going to post Thursday morning - this story always stuck with my and gave me the creeps (especially that bizarre video footage from the hotel).
      Cheers, have a great week!

      Yeah good point eh, it actually does happen every now and then but I think it's way overblown. And in this case I think that he didn't remove his clothing due to hypothermia just because this happened in a very highly populated and relatively busy area - help was very close by. Strange case. If he fell into the water and got out... Taking off his clothes would be the thing to do, as the clothes hold the cold freezing water.. also heavy and harder to move. He probably kept the shoes on to walk on the sharp frozen ice. My guess is he tried to warm up get help, but froze to death before he could.
