    Suit cases make fantastic targets. They have a lot of DIY advantages. Right shape, already have a handle and wheels they close with a zipper and can mostly be found for free. The key is to fill with old seat cushions, pillows and or pink or blue foam board, this keeps the wight down. Use synthetics they are less likely to grow mold. Stack a few together a great way to make a back stop to protect your fence. Also smaller carry-on size bags and school back packs are fun for hanging targets.

    My favorite target so far is homemade. I bought 3 sheets of 2" thick foamular. Cut each sheet into eight 12" pieces (24 pcs), stacked them, threw ratchet straps around it and made a 48"x48"x12" layered target that I can shoot with FP's and BH's.
    Nice and BIG so I can shoot out to 100 yards without worrying about missing.
    I haven't had to yet, but I can also rotate out soft spots, has lasted a few years now. Should last a long time.

    Go and buy a small bale or cube of peastraw.
    It costs me about $7.50Au and you get a few hundred shots into it, and it doesn't ruin your arrow either.
    Once you are done with it, throw it on the garden!

    100lb white woven grain bag, packed tight with old denim. It will stop literally any arrow or bolt I have ever shot or seen shot at them. Best part is no matter how much penetration you get, arrows will come out with 2 fingers. Spray paint targets on them and shoot till pieces of cloth are coming out. They will stop broadheads too but most of the time you will have to open the bag to get the broadhead out of the target.

      Matt Erb are you shooting a crossbow @ your homemade target???

    • @2002twistr
      @2002twistr 6 років тому +2

      Yep, it stops them just as well as a full length arrow. I shoot a PSE fang crossbow with a 20" headhunter bolt 100gr field points as well as 100gr toxic broad heads, and a barnett vortex hunter extreme compound set at 60lbs, with 29" Bloodsports. The crossbow is supposed to be 345fps and the compound 300, I have never chrono'd either but the rag bag stops all arrows and bolts that I have seen shot into them. Broad head or not

      Matt Erb thanks for the info. I bought a karnage apocalypse xbow (370 fps supposedly)back in January. Realized very quick that square hay bales weren't gonna work for targets.bought a block target for $100 , works good for field points but I haven't tried broadheads yet cause I was afraid they would ruin it fast

      Pulling the arrow or bolt out of a block target sucks though, 2 finger arrow removal from the rag bag. I'll try to make a video on the rag bag for you. I'll send a field point and a broad head into it one from each.

    A pile of sand does the trick especially with broad heads. Place a 5 gallon bucket of water next to the pile to wash off all the sand on the arrow after each shot. It takes less than 3 seconds to get a clean arrow.

    My fav is a plain WalMart bag target by Bone Collector. It's a "bag", but it's a solid cube. It seems to be made with compressed layers of plastic sheeting. So, it's impervious to rain. And, at $25, you can afford to buy a new one every month. Also, shooting the same side all the time tends to make the back bulge out. So turn it regularly.

    I find if I put some thread seal tape on the thread of the field point there isn't the risk of it backing out in flight or when it hits the target.

    I just go the local store and get cardboard boxes, and stuff them old clothes and other material. I have a large role of tape and make center holes with paint. I get several days out of each box.

    If I could only purchase one target it would be Morrells High Roller. The 13-in one is about 120 bucks. Great for broadhead and field points.

    I got 3 block targets that didn't last that long about a year on each but by far my Rinehart 18+1 is on top going on 2yrs of pounding due to the self healing foam its a little tough to pull arrows in the beginning without a arrow gripper but get easier once it broken in worth every dollar in long term usage.

    I got one of those yellow cube targets. Pound the crap out of it. Haven't Had a pass threw yet. Move my target around on the face of the block. Figure I can get 7-8 placements per side. Hopefully I'll get 6 months out of it. Breaks down to 12 bucks a month for a target. Thanks for posting the video, great job.

      Sounds like you have a Morrell Double Duty 450FPS! Great purchase my man! You should get a lot more use than 6 months. That target is extremely durable. If you ever get any pass-thrus then jump on it a couple of times by doing so you will adjust the fabric inside the bag. Then all you have to do is replacement the cover. You can get a replacement cover from a pro shop, large chain stores or Amazon. You can even grab one on our dot com. www.morrelltargets.com/products/morrell-double-duty-450-fps-field-point-target
      Thanks for your support! Happy practicing #huntingstartshere

    Open layered archery targets fall apart if you shoot a compound. I created 4 holes in mine with my Hoyt and Diamond. Thanks Block.

      Yeah ever since having dismal results with my black hole target and total pass thrus first shot, I've gone with DIY and become a master at home made targets. A target should be: light weight for portability, easy to pull arrows out and stop anything I can throw at it. So far haven't seen a factory target that is all those things. Usually durability=weight.

    • @MntRprznt
      @MntRprznt 6 років тому

      So what do you use for yours?

    • @Skelstoolbox
      @Skelstoolbox 6 років тому

      Hey there, so I have experimented with several different mediums for the target stuffing. Clothing works well but only if it's shredded (makes a difference) and not in a full containment box, as the energy impact of arrows tends to rupture the box, even if it's reinforced with packing tape. So shredded clothing for bag type targets made out of those cloth grocery bags all grocery stores have now, works well. Use 2 or 3 because they will take a beating. Another favorite medium is that clear plastic packing, saran wrap that wrap full pallets. Don't grab used stuff from a store because it will vary in density. You have to buy a new roll. Then you begin "rolling clyinders" out of the saran wrap so you have a cylinder about 4 inches in diameter and fairly tight. You then lay them across the bottom of your cloth grocery bag or cardboard box and continue until its full. All saran wrap cylinders must be laid the same way and same tightness for good results. They will stop my buddies crossbow and my compound better than most factory targets. Mine are light, tough and portable.. Have yet to find a target that's all of those things. Either too heavy, too hard to pull arrows out (3D targets) or my arrows blow right thu them like the blackhole piece of shit..

    Average Jack Archery, can I fill a Morrell replacement covering with animal bedding made of wood shavings? Would this target set up be adequate for field tips at 315 FPS?

    • @averagejackarchery
      @averagejackarchery  4 роки тому +1

      I would avoid anything other than cloth and plastic filler. Wood is destined to destroy your arrows.

    I have a target rated for 325fps. I unwisely used it to sight in my new crossbow, rated at 390fps. The bolt went completely into the target, fletching and all. I had to pull the bolt through the back of the target. It's now slick - the fletches are stuck in the target, evidently. So lesson learned: Buy a target that is at least rated to the bow/crossbow you are shooting!
