Brazil's love of the Sega Master System is now genuinely one of the first things I think of when the country is mentioned - which is a good thing, as someone who grew up playing it and is now a bit resentful that the gaming internet is dominated by NES-playing Americans (I never knew anyone who owned an NES back in the day...)
I played the NES some but I was a SEGA kid. Genesis though. Didn't know the Master System existed until the late 90s when I went to a garage sale and saw some games.

My brothers girlfriend had a master system back in 2000 when I first played it. The SNES was my first console as a 4 year year old. The N64 was next. I was born in Feb 1991 Brisbane Australia.

Did you know the megadrive was the next iteration of the sms. There is a very old japanese interview which I cannot find that talks about how they added the md hardware to the sms to retain the backward compatibility which makes sense. It isn't a new hardware which they tried to retain sms compatibility but an sms which they added additional functionality and marketed as a megadrive. What is cool is that the sg1000/sc3000 have a firecr lineage all the way to the megadrive.

I believe the Japanese Master System have the FM sound chip, which made it superior to the mark III that needed a separated FM sound chip. Overseas the master system have had no FM sound chip.
The first Sega Console I heard about and played in Canada was the Genesis (in the 80s and early 90s). I only had one friend with Genesis. The NES was far more popular. As was every other Nintendo console to come.
I know of one more variant because I own one It is the power base converter for the Genesis. Lady Decade would know it as the Mega Drive Master System Converter. It was known as the Sega Mega Adapter in Japan.

Brazil was also the last place on Earth to still have the PS2. Thanks mainly to that country, it survived an impressive 13 years.
