I just looked up Pepe Julian Onziema, to find out how he's doing these days. "As of 2020, he has found acceptance throughout his community, attending village elder meetings being embraced as "the son he truly is." And he's still fighting for LGBT rights!
THANK YOU! Otherwise I might have had to look it up myself. And I am glad that this gnarly survivor was still fighting the Good Fight. Ocrap it's 2024... I guess I'll check in anyway.
Meanwhile Assad is still doing Assad things. Snakes and bees were a mirage. Scorpions were at least honest from the start.
What an amazing combination of hilarity and horror. Onziema is awesome.
Hell yeah! Great to hear. One of the rare cases he covers with a hopeful follow up a decade later..except for the insane evangelicals still pushing their hate speech, somehow thinking their Jesus loves vicious hatred, bigotry and intolerance. Bible also says don't eat shellfish 14 more times than don't be gay but they don't seem to push those views. Lunatics shouldn't be allowed anywhere near lawmaking
Fantastic, thank you so much for checking!
OMG. I didn't know John got to talk to the activist from the famous "Why are you gay" meme. The episode aged like wine
I had nearly forgotten, sorry doesn't cut it! The man got hospitalized had nearly lost his hearing and as 2019 been arrested or detained 7 times! His activism is so important! Thank you Pepe Julian Onziema, for loving your country enough to try to make it better!
What an incredible man he is!!!
Are you?
"Why are you gay?" Will forever be one of the most hilarious interview questions.
I love the idea of companies having a mid life crisis in their late 30s-40s because they realize they are going to die soon
Okay just going to say this here since you can't comment on a playlist as a whole, but thank you to whoever made this an ordered playlist. These weren't uploaded in order and I know that probably wasn't anyone's fault but it made it a pain for my dyslexic ass to find the episodes in order. Having a fun time watching these again!
They also made a playlist, which is ordered.
Who is the new host? He's so young and vibrent. I didn't think Oliver's kids were this old but there is a clear family resemblance.
😂😂😂😂
i think he is John Oliver's youngest grandson!
Yo, it’s the first season. It’s still John just from the past! I know it’s spooky lol
@@shaggy1792... that was the joke.
That's John Oliver himself silly! He's just using CGI de-aging to spare us from witnessing the cruel ravages of time so clearly
Look at him. So young, so full of energy.
He's beautiful, fully awake, and ready to be crushed by the futility of modern society.
John or Pepe?
@@ceciletillerot403 Both? Both. Both is good. (Not really.)
Hey team LWT: Is it possible to put the original air dates in the description? Thanks for all you do!
Please! This would really help put everything into context.
Definitely! I find myself guessing a lot n curious how close I am
They now added it to the description of every video! 👍
Is looking that up too complicated for you?
Who at LWT is up at 1:30 AM uploading season 1? I’m so grateful
That’s day time in Africa, so it’s probably the swarm of bees and snakes
youtube scheduling to give a serious answer
1:40 am to be precise
If anyone from HBO sees this, you should put the link to the extended interviews in the description or as a pinned comment. I would love to see more Pepe, Stephen Hawking, etc
And the original air date. It's literally called "Last Week Tonight." What the last week was is sort of relevant information.
@@jamesm5787they've now added it.
While in the description would be great, also know that the interviews are still up on the Web Exclusives playlist on the channel! So you shouldn't have to scroll too far to find them.
Have boycotted HL ever since that ruling... the blatant smuggling of artifacts from Iraq came earlier but I didn't find out until their case before SC put them in the hot seat.
Same. I'm a crafter and a sewer, but I refuse to go to them for even a gluestick at this point. Companies should not be able to force the founders' religious views on their employees. Sickening.
I've never stepped foot inside a Hobby Lobby and I never will. I am pagan and I love birth control. 3 kids is enough Dammit!
Same
I really don't get what's so "un-Christian" about birth control & abortion rights tbh. That kind of thing is more of an extreme conservative view than a Christian one
That 'pls don't be a terrorist' aged well.. Too well..
Yeah, it's not like the US has supported terrorists before... Wait...
Pepe Julian Onziema, what a king.
Who else is binge watching all of Season 1 full episodes?
Everyone!
I love that every time I open UA-cam there’s just another S1 episode in the homepage and I just start watching it
Yo mama.
meeeee
Also Me.
So I did a little research about Mr. Onziema. He's still very active in LGBT rights in Uganda, and has suffered violence because of it. He's been detained 7 times, and was once assaulted so badly he lost hearing in one of his hears and had to be hospitalized. But as of 2020 he's become a respected activist in Uganda, and is highly respected in his village and his community.
The interview with Pepe Julian Onziema is one my faves from LWT. Not the funniest, but I love hearing activists talk about their work
John Oliver uploading full episodes of Season 1 to remind us that he was once a fresh and young bloke😅
he's a bit of a silver fox now.
A bit? 😏😏
@@ThatBlackGirlMagic I'm trying to tone it down instead of just outright calling him a sexy grandpa
Thank you for sharing Uganda interview.
S1 E9 (aired June 29, 2014)
You're doing John's work.
Thank you. I wish the airing date was clearly stated in the "show description," Definitely can't go by the posted date.
As I rewatch all of these nightly to fall asleep - and we have mooooore
Hobby Lobby is the biggest hypocrite! They claim to have "Christian" values but they force their workers to endure life threatening conditions. I regularly see Hobby Lobby workers balancing at the top of a 20 foot ladder, trying to place HEAVY inventory items on a high shelf. If they fell from that height, it would cause serious injury or even death. Hobby Lobby also humiliates the women who labor there, by surveillance of their every move. Its like working at a prison camp. They also buy their inventory from manufacturers who use child labor, in inhumane conditions.
That's big corporations for you, always looking for a way to have slaves instead of workers, just to save a buck
That's why we need workers rights and not corporate rights, aka we need to repeal citizens united and we need to bring back unions
Perfect example of Christian values out here in the US South.
@Tonyhouse1168 Yes. Those hypocritical actions are so loud, I can't hear the message they are sending with their mouths. They say they are followers of this man who preached love, tolerance, generosity, and kindness. They display "Christian" books and play religious music in their stores. Yet they treat their employees in the exact opposite way, with meaness and disrespect. It's almost mindblowing. I reported them to OSHA and OSHA wrote them a non compliance letter. But Hobyy Lobby's legal department responded by denying the charges even though I submitted pictures of an employee balanced at the top of a 20 foot ladder with no safety handles.
Hobby lobby and its owners have been the subject of controversies and scandals including accusations of antisemitism, homophobia, LGBTQ discrimination. Wouldn't set foot in one.
Gay marriage has only been legal for 9 years. I forgot how recent that was.
And it technically is illegal in half the states. If the supreme court does what they did to Roe vs Wade to the gay decriminalization case and gay marriage case than any lgbt person not currently married in those states won't legally be able to.
He showed the restraint and patience of a true Saint in that interview holy shit.
This religious manipulation of federal policies goes against the Establishments Claim, and the Free Exercise Clause of freedom of Religion, not to mention more than a dozen rulings by the Supreme Court dating all the way back to 1878, in which the supreme court ruled "Although your freedom to believe is absolute, your freedom to act upon those beliefs is not."
Thanx for the replay's!! I missed quite a few!! Love the show!
“Why are you gay?” Is one of the funniest questions ever because it demands an answer that doesn’t really exist.
Maybe someday in the distant future the genetic and environmental factors that contribute to attraction will be totally knowable but for now it’s like…”when I was 12 years old I saw an ad for paper towels online with the most beautiful model lady I had ever seen. Now I’m a lesbian. The paper towel goddess willed it.”
I'd respond every time with "why are you heterosexual?"
@@BeeLZBeeb they might be all “someone has to do it or we’d go extinct”. Which kinda makes sense.
The only evolutionary theory I’ve heard for why so many humans are gay is that historically if straights needed someone to take in their kids because they were busy or dead, their gay cousin would probably do it since they didn’t have their own kids to worry about feeding.
I have no idea if that’s valid, but I can definitely imagine myself as a spinster aunt type adopting medieval orphans and such 500 years ago.
I love waking up to my Last Week Tonight and was heart broken there wasn’t a new episode. Thank goodness I can have one I haven’t seen today.
Don't despair , Manly Puffs , they're got gonna display a vid for you ,broadcasted 10 years ago and act like it just yesterday !
If Eve was created from Adam, what was Adam when *he* still had his female side? No offense meant; it's rhetorical unless someone makes it personal. The guest, Pepe Julian Onziema (?) is wise and strong - and is still out there upholding the rights of LGBTQ folks (Wikipedia, March 2024). Wishing blessings on him.
There *is* actually an interpretation of the Bible that says Adam was originally intersex
@@vigilantsycamore8750 Thank you! I've not seen it. (C.S.Lewis pondered the question of gender long before I/we were born, surmising there may be at least seven among corporeal beings. Then there's Moses' account of God telling him, I AM that I AM. I don't think Moses was inclined to question what gender I AM was.) Cheers!
Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Arkansas and WV.
The rest of the nation is staring at you.
…At least West Virginia is beautiful. …almost heaven.
Blue Ridge Mountains...
I think Pepe said, "Sorry doesn't cut it" for 2 reasons: 1.) It's probably not safe for him to say something like that to someone in the Ugandan media (even in a joking way) and, 2.) He likely blames America and other western countries more for the homophobia in Uganda than his own people (and rightly so).
This is one terrific show. Thank you bringing on the Uganda fellow. Not to mention break-dancing Abe!
That guy didn't accurately name a single fruit or vegetable xD
This recap made me look up Pepe, and so so so relieved and happy to see he's doing fantastic!
I need a reminder about Hobby Lobby. I live too close to one, and actually bought a few things on a good sale, knowing damn well I shouldn't.
They claimed that they can refuse health coverage to their female emplyoees if it include contraception, because of deeply felt religious beliefs.
I wish the original air date was given so we had some context of when this was happening. In this episode, John mentions its 2014, but would be great to start the episode with the date or if the ones uploading this online put it in the description box.
i was thinking the same thing! much needed context.
I agree but meanwhile I just Google when did this episode air and the answer was June 22, 2014.
It was rulings like this that opened the door for over the counter birth control and business like NURX. So thanks, Hobby Lobby.
I have so much respect for Pepe Julian Onziema, both speaking up in Uganda, and coming on the show here. If anyone was actually thrown by the sorry doesnt cut it, I will mention that the atmosphere is extremely different when sitting in a studio that is not in a nation that criminalizes your existence, and while the restraint shown is admirable, we need to be making sure that people aren't in the position where that level of restraint is needed while defending their fundamental existence, as was made possible by the progress that had been made in the states at the time, and also by the atmosphere of the show itself. Best wishes to everyone who is fighting for equality and equity, and seeking to tear down our systems of oppression!
This episode is incredible, kudos to Pepe!
Thank you for uploading these. Excellent move!
so grateful it’s all here now❤
His humor has gotten a lot better
If Martin Ssempa seems familiar, it's because he's the Eat Da Poo Poo guy.
Thank you for releasing the entire first season from a current HBO subscriber! 🧡💛🧡
6:42 I have to wonder how John and the writers of this joke feel now that Ben & Jerry's now does just sell ice cream free edible cookie dough
1:52 "A shawarma fell in my mouth"
WHAT the FUCK, SCORPIONS?!!!
I wish the description had the original air date included.
"Sorry doesn't cut it." 😂
I think there's merit to revisit some of these cases to see where they are now. Also, I totally forgot that there was an interview segment. While it's great to see John talk to guests in person, I do appreciate the current version where the team can really deep dive into the weekly topics.
I literally can't get enough of this show. Sorry, productive tasks.
12:20 I'd say it's at least as likely to be Alabama as Mississippi. We may even get to find out which state is last if SCOTUS has their way.
Corporations should only get to have ONE Congress member. Say wherever the headquarters resides is the district
It’s depressing 10 years later nothing has changed, what’s more depressing listening to billy Joel we didn’t start the fire and 40 plus years later not much has changed
It's even more depressing than that, as we have not changed AT ALL since the 1800s.
We still have slavery today, and in fact there is more slaves today than there was even the civil war started. Look up the documentary 13th
We still have corporate rule. We still have racism. We still have many things.
We also still have a class system. Over 60% of those both into poverty remain in poverty until they die. And about 40% of people will go DOWN a class on their lifetime.
The only difference is that people are living longer. And even then, in the past the life expectancy rage was low due to how many died as a child or giving birth.
This throws me back
22:34 finally the context
I don’t plan on going to Hobby Lobby ever so lol
11:08 I love this segment lol. "Literally thank you"
Holy shit i kinda wish he had guests more. This is awesome
Tbh i have such big respect for the lovely Mr Onziema ❤ he was very muted with his countrymen in the interview with them, because they are all victims of a forced belief in all of this, but when he speaks to John, then "sorry doesn't cut it" because a sorry from him makes no difference to his everyday experience in this day and age, and I love that he didn't accept that sorry ❤
Corporation issues aside, if someone takes issue with contraception on religious grounds, then I think they should rethink their religion. Trying to block access to contraception is monumentally stupid and will not have whatever positive effect you think it will.
Omg biting.😂 Dang I thought Mike Tyson was bad. Lol
"Scorpions what is WRONG with you! STOP hiding in bananas in Pittsburg area Walmarts, get your SHIT together, and fight terrorism like snakes and bees!!!"
I need that on a shirt. Like yesterday.
Also, can I ask, can you include the original airdate for these stories/epis in the description?
Original Airdate: Sun, Jun 29, 2014
By far one of the best episodes ever made.
Those that yell the loudest are the ones fighting their own urges.
Keep up the fight!!
I was like... "Oh! Did John do something different with his hair? Dyed it back to black?... he looks younger too... nevermind. I remember this episode. Precovid when we were all young." 😂😂 This is such a great episode though.
"Get back in that cake!" 😂
Ok he was sued in 2016, won on a technicality but judge said he broke international law. A new anti gay law was passed in 2023 in Uganda so the same Ugandan sexual minorities group is suing him again, court case is this fall. Hope they win.
If you want to fix gay rights just take the government out of marriage. It should be a personal decision that the government has no involvement in whatsoever.
how would that fix gay rights? the primary problem gay people are facing is persecution and discrimination, not issues related to marriage
Exactly. Just like abortion. None of the government's business. Or the general public either.
1:00
Hey tasted like Pasta, that's why!
Where's the extended interview
I dont understand, how is full series like this having lower viewcount than the one specifically edited for youtube (the cue would be John's `Moving On...`?
The 2024 new episodes that release on this channel can't be watched in the United States and other places where a legitimate way to watch them, like max, is available. That's why the trimmed down video gets more views. It's the only video that United States and other places can see and watch.
adding to Zwiki22 responds
they also posted all of season 1 at the same time, which is something that the youtube algorithm does not really like. so that might also be part of the reason for a lower view count
does john do little characterslike this anymore? i feel like its way more rare now
But I want to watch the extended interview!?
Citizens United is disgusting
Oh the sacred cow Hobby Lobby
I just wanted to say thanks LWTwJO
i wish the descriptions included the original air date 😕
This was 10 years ago?? Why does it look like 20 years....
Gosh, how old is this? John still had all black hair, no grey yet.
Pepe is a Ugandan patriot.
What? John is Benjamin Buttoning!?!
1:30
Whooo, Ajax made its way into LWT!
For a second I was wondering if they de-aged John
This episode originally aired June 29, 2014
If Hobby Lobby has the “religious freedom” to not pay for contraception, actual human beings should have the religious freedom to not pay for genocide.
I don't want my tax dollars going to that.
Getting free people is tight.
Awesome Guest
Pretty depressing to see that’s nothing changed, except for the worse
I don't know why but dumping all these episodes onto UA-cam kinda makes me feel like the world is getting ready to end...
nothing really changes
Omigosh, I have goosebumps! Yay, Pepe! Yay!
There’s nothing wrong with beets
Amen! Their tops are chard, the golden ones are yummy with goat cheese, and the red ones can be made into sugar. What's not to like, John?
John Oliver in 3 years from this when he realizes what the actual MLP movie for G4 is like, either that or he's that part of the fandom who thinks the show was ruined when Twilight got wings
Episode 9 of asking LWTWJO to Please post these in opposite order so I can binge them in order without having to skip back at the end of every one 😢
Watching this 1.75 speed is the moooove
