Watching these a decade later is so fascinating not just because of the relevance of the events being covered and seeing the show itself evolve, but also because I'm realizing how even though I've been watching since season 2 I'm only just now the target demographic. This episode aired when I was just about to start middle school, and I am now old enough to be the person referred to in the "if you're getting high in your dorm room right now" joke. Truly bizarre realizing I spent my entire teenage years with this bird man and I'm still watching him as a college senior.
@iyeetsecurity922 ok as a woman in iran. That's not true , woman in iran are well educated (67 percent of college graduates are woman ) and have you ever seen an iranian woman , honestly the beauty standards here are really high , ( and it's not necessarily good or bad just saying)
About a year ago, a search warrant was issued for my stepson because he was "known to be involved with a gang member who was involved in a drive by shooting". This is a small city of less than 200k. One of those tanks showed up in front of my house, came on to the loud speakers for us to come out of the house one-by-one. As the man of the house, of course I was the first one out. With an armored machine gun mount pointed at me I step out the door. I was immediately handcuffed behind my back, and as a morbidly obese with severe arthritis caused over the next couple of hours enough suffering that if it were not law enforcement, I could have easily won tens of thousands in a law suit. They did cuff my 16-year-old step son, not the one suspected, and wanted to cuff the 18-year-old step daughter, but decided that she was carrying her 3-month-old baby that it might look bad. They ripped my house apart searching and despite the fact that I told them that the only firearm in the house was a .22 rifle from when I was a teen, they didn't even find that. In the mean time, everyone on my block, which is in a pretty decent neighborhood, came out to see the spectacle with the news even making it back to my landlord, who amazingly upped my rent by 50% when renewal time came around. Yeah, so that happened.
Sp you had police officers be able to get to you and well you knkw use military tactics to force you to comply with them even though you were not really at fault for one of your family members behavior and your landlord ended up being the biggest bastard besides the corrupt police officers themselves.
I’m sorry that that happened to you and your loved ones. It’s so sad to see that this episode was 10 years ago. And nothing changed… As an outsider (NL 🇳🇱) it’s truly sad to see that nothing has changed…

Escalation of Force is the point I am always drawn back to. Police have more free reign to shoot their own citizens in this country than I foreseeably did in a WARZONE in another country. I couldn't shoot at someone until I was shot at, yet a cop was free to unload into someone sitting in a driver seat who just told the officer he had a weapon in the vehicle... while a child was in the damn car. So glad that John and Co. brought up that point in this episode back in the day.

That vehicle the Doraville Police showed off isn't a tank. It's an M113, an armored personel carrier. The biggest weapon it ever carries is a .50 Cal machine gun or a grenade launcher, and its armor couldn't stop even a ww2 era rocket launcher. The M113 is designed just to get soldiers to the front, then boogie on out of there

I tell ya, when I first heard these season one episodes were coming to UA-cam, I thought "what's the point of watching them? They're ten years old. They're not relevant anymore." Holy crap, was I wrong. Aside from surprise appearances by Obama as president, I can't even tell these episodes are from a decade ago. It's depressing to see how little progress we've made on all of these serious issues.
I really can’t believe how revalent issues from a decade ago are now. Gaza, Ukraine, police violence against African Americans. We have been through 3 different presidents and progress remains slow.

GOP in 2023: (publishes Project 2025 which contains bans on birth control) Me in 2024: it’s your choice America, we go Iran or we go free. Don’t screw up! If the GOP loses in November, we will still have time to make Dark Brandon uncomfortable for what he’s doing for Israel. Most of the gender wage gap can be explained by childrearing responsibilities and career choices. That doesn't mean the gap isn't real, but it's been studied a lot by social scientists and we know what drives it. Women pay a motherhood penalty, earning less money after becoming parents, while men earn more. Women tend to major in things like education, social work, and nursing, which are laudable professions to be sure, but they aren't paid as much as things men tend to major in, like computer science, engineering, and finance. There is the larger question of how much "choice" goes into a career choice, when women are harassed or not taken seriously in male-dominated fields. But the "equal pay for equal work" tagline seriously misrepresents the problem, as men and women tend to do different kinds of work on average.
Don't tell this to this audience... Here when FACT of women choosing different things was presented, John answered with "well some professors chose male applicants more" and walked out of the conversation. Not to mention laughing at "it doesnt matter how big gender gap is" (it absolutely does matter because we talk about statistics. We can have only 2 men and 2 women and there will be some gaps between genders, sexes, religions etc. between them. There aren o two identical humans. How big is the buddist gap? why is John not talking about that?! Because i"m 101% sure when we take all people grouped by faith they will not earn exactly as much, even selected by gender) or using graphic with man holding fist full of dollars when woman have only some coins. As well as comparasion with monkeys that are GIVEN different things instead of earning that through their actions and life. I really need to sue my female boss for earning more than me apparently because everyone everywhere should earn the same. It makes you wonder how much more John earns against his female staff members.... It's the exact same issue when few episodes before they complained that female soccer players earn less. THEN WATCH WOMENS SOCCER, But noone does, so yes they earn more. for the exact same reason p*rnstars earn much more if they are not male. Equality is not Equity, we should have equal chances, we cannot be guaranteed equal outcomes of our lives.
Yes, and also, professions that have higher proportions of women are less well compensated, and men rise to managerial positions in those professions faster.
i mean, “equal pay for equal work” still applies in that case. women aren’t being paid less because they’re working less, they’re being paid less because they’re working in female-dominated fields. it’s still equal work, just a different type. also, women in the same exact jobs still often get paid noticeably less than their male counterparts
I work in a corporate environment, and I learned that, for the same work, a coworker (a man) with significantly less experience started at 16% higher pay. Fortunately, I have a very solid reputation in the field, and people had been trying to poach me with benefits I was seeking, and a huge pay increase. I don't need a fucktonne of money, but at least pretend to pay me a semblance of my worth. The wild part? I gave my employer notice, and they matched the offer I was taking, but told me they'd have to bump the pay of another coworker (a woman), who has way more knowledge and experience, is very highly regarded in the field, and who everyone up to the VPs in the company knows "if she goes, we're fucked."
PSA for everyone, including men, but especially everyone else: your employer is not looking to pay you your worth. If you don't speak up, they'll happily take more for less pay. And they'll tell you they can't give you a raise, and they are almost always lying. They do not have your interest at heart, they have theirs first and foremost. If you want more money, look elsewhere. I know it's very hard when you've built up relationships with coworkers and customers, but it's the only way out. Only reason I was able to finally do it was because my partner got Sick™ (the big bad), rumor had a rent hike, and we're still not able to afford anything but our tiny, falling apart apartment, and even amazing insurance doesn't cover all the bills. Only reason we're staying is to be near their doctors. I know full well that my employer will take advantage of me again, but they matched other offers, and this buys us a little extra stability not having to move far away.
"Are you annoyed at people complaining about how you don't pay women as much as men? Fix that with this one weird trick: don't be in a position where you're controlling people's salaries!"

I agree most of the time. But refering to leni in relation to trash film memes. That's simply disrespectful. She was a talented person in an unfortunate place in history.
Not really, he was entirely correct. Michael Brown, regardless of what he had done 10 minutes before, was confronted on the basis he was walking in the street. The Police Chief himself acknowledges this. Considering this alongside the utter lack of injury to Wilson, the police force's historic mistreatment of minorities, and the police overreaction, it is entirely legitimate to point out these flaws. Hence why even in 2020 the State Prosecutor doubled checked the case to see if charges could be brought, but declined on the basis of insufficient evidence. Not a lack of merit, but insufficient evidence.
All these years later and that one Battlestar Galactica fan in the audience still makes me smile every time

I feel like half the stories could have happened today
You are fabulous
Man who's this guy claiming to be John Oliver? Dude doesn't even look like a bird
And these same police departments staff schools
I remember seeing that live
I really can’t believe how revalent issues from a decade ago are now. Gaza, Ukraine, police violence against African Americans. We have been through 3 different presidents and progress remains slow.
ok so niche but the keene NH pumpkin fest actually DID have a riot at the pumpkin fest the year after they did this. UNH students flipped a car over lollll
The Ayatollah in 2014: (bans birth control)
America: That’s insane, why would they do that?
GOP in 2022: (overturns Roe v Wade)
America: Why is this happening? Why did they take a woman’s right to choose?
Well, at least birth control is safe right?
GOP in 2023: (publishes Project 2025 which contains bans on birth control)
Me in 2024: it’s your choice America, we go Iran or we go free. Don’t screw up! If the GOP loses in November, we will still have time to make Dark Brandon uncomfortable for what he’s doing for Israel. If Trump wins, he will not hear our pleas and will crush us like Pinochet, Franco, or Gustavo Diaz Ordaz; and he will also stand with Israel. Also Brandon, please stop the genocide.
Iran has a President and a Supreme Leader, and Two Militaries one for each… sounds like America.. 😱😨🙀
Brandon stopped arms deliveries since you posted this.
"People are saying..." translated into English: "We want you to think this is true"
Oh people were definitely saying that even with the insuline innaler it was not gonna sell
26:30 Is... is that Kellyanne Conway?
Knowing what we know now about Ferguson...wow.
There is no pay gap. There is no company that has a pay table for men and another for women.
Illegal birth control sounds familiar
26:41 so, like, be a childless cat lady?
Militarizing the police in Missouri shouldn't be a surprise since it is a southern state. What else is there to say?
I'm wondering how many of you younger people knew who Lena Riefenstahl is. Before you Googled it.
Remains topical ten years on.
"Are you annoyed at people complaining about how you don't pay women as much as men? Fix that with this one weird trick: don't be in a position where you're controlling people's salaries!"
I mean. There are certainty some beliefs that warrant condemnation.
Is it 2015
Glad people are saying it, getting sick of hearing from the dog.
Honestly who just added it.
Kellyanne Conway jump scare!
SOMEBODY IS GETTING THE DATES OF THESE EPISODES WRONG: If Michael Brown was Shot and Killed on August 9 2014 - How TF did this episode air on July 17 2014 while discussing Feguson ?? Since the riots occurred after Brown's death.
No justice, no peace. Then, now, and as long as it takes.
This show has been so much better than Bill Maher since it started. Bill says dumb one liners and holds for laugh every sentence
Its the most annoying thing to watch
Hes rude to everyone and so arrogant I believe he'd fk himself upon asking him to
When Oliver's kid took over the show?
Don't infringe upon our right of Pumpkin Festivals.
Admin for John here! So I was fired over some bullsht and I am uploading everything I have access to.
👀
Okay?
This is a lie. They announced a few days ago that all of the old episodes will be uploaded by the way.
Then why wouldn't you post this comment from the official account that you claim to have access to? 🤔
@@kilo.sierra I was "laid off" yeah right those pompus fcks fired me because I refused to do 3 others peoples work along with my own. Well nope...not me. And I was fired so I don't have access to any main account. I only have the episodes I took.
Criminalizing BC….*sigh*
I agree most of the time.
But refering to leni in relation to trash film memes.
That's simply disrespectful.
She was a talented person in an unfortunate place in history.
That little girl at the start is 23 now.
He's all over that Michael Brown case without knowing the facts.
