A few of them feel that way…the US drones bombing Palestine. Ukraine/Russia. Israel/Palestine…the wealth gap getting larger. There’s even an episode from a month ago about student loan debt and another from 2 months ago about executions where he referred to one of these episodes from S1. History repeats itself I guess. I knew there was a reason some of the newer episodes felt familiar.
2014: In 5 years, this situation has not improved.

I mean _technically_ the fact that a majority of people are able to recognize and say “genocide and ethnic cleansing… maybe let’s not?!?” is an important progression, but people are still losing their jobs and getting kicked out of school for saying so out loud!
The genocide of it all is starting to break through but what does a majority opinion mean to the American government? 😕
@@xiomara5147 The majority opinion does not mean much when the government, which is intended to act in the best interest of the people, is acting in the best interest of corporations and billionaires, while refusing to acknowledge their obvious blunders, and doubling down on said blunders.
My friend, investigate the decades of history and civilian slaughter in the region. People start the discussion with Hamas being angry and doing bad things right now, but if you look over 8+ decades, you might understand why. As Slavoj Zizeck says, contextualizing evil is not the same as endorsing it as moral. We can study how Hitler took control of Germany and convinced people to perform atrocities while clearly not being in support of them. This type of thinking can help move toward an end to the conflict (although I personally see none, given the history of the region. Forcibly removing a bunch of people from their land usually ends up with decades or centuries of war).

Crazy right I don't remember this being big news back then.
I was legit shocked when ep 2 opened with a segment on Ukraine being attacked and the international community dragging its feet and at best applying ineffective sanctions, then this comes up 9 episodes later...really not much changed in 10 years.
I'm watching it, going, John looks younger, but the news is current. Isreal/Gaza,. Putin/Ukraine...

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes! That's one of the first things I looked for when I started watching these old reruns. I'm frankly surprised that JO's team hasn't realized the importance of dates. I know he likes to say it's a comedy show, not a news show. But really, John, you have to know the historical importance of your work. History. Context. Documentation.

Literally didn't realise until 10 minutes in that this was 10-years-old. Ironically, it was the Commonwealth Games being in Glasgow rather than Birmingham.
I was just thinking how this entire first season seems like it's talking about now and not a decade ago before I started this episode and now two and a half minutes in he's talking about how the exact same thing was happening for the past 5 years before that. Just wow.

Man, his comment on Anderson Cooper's youthful immortality has not, no pun intended, aged gracefully. Pretty much since the start of this decade, he's gained large lines across his muzzle and wrinkles below his eyes.

I can't help but get confused with this because it's eeriely similar to modern day.
The low quality of food leads to obesity and diabetes which ends up costing millions more than whatever is saved by serving only processed food.
I spent 6 months in a county jail in New Jersey. One guy was complaining of chest pain. The nurse gave him an aspirin and he died 2 hours later.
