- The Rabbit is back! This week we test the 2019 Volkswagen GTI Rabbit, to find out if it still remains the go-to hot hatch, and if the Rabbit nameplate brings something special to an already loved car.

Did I get lucky, or what? Walked into the VW showroom on a Sat to just kick tires...they wheeled in that cornflower blue. I told the salesman and friend Mike, "I gotta have this car." Called the angelic wife...got a "go for it honey" and bam! I have a cornflower blue Rabbit...I'm in love;-)

Haha! Dude, this happened to me too! They still had it in factory wrap and hadn’t even listed it publicly yet. I thought the cornflower blue had already been sold out nationwide. It was destiny. I’m loving it! Just got my badge and certificate package😁😁

I heard it said in some review some time that any screen will date a car to its time, but analog gauges will always look fine. I cannot disagree.
Such a refreshing view when i see these in the streets, tired of seeing subies, civics. Don’t get me wrong they’re great but, there’s something about a golf gti.
Yeah, bro especially the looks on the 2018+ models. It's a car I feel you get more of your money's worth. Especially when modified, it eats up v8's.

This review is a big reason I test drove and then ultimately decided to get the Rabbbit. Unfortunately there was no cornflower blue within 100 miles, but I love my Urano Grey DSG. This car rocks!
How much did you pay for it?
Urano grey really paid off considering it never ended up on non special edition models like cornflower blue did

Reasons to not have a sunroof: more headroom, less weight (better performance), better gas mileage (because of less weight), fewer things to break (glass cracks, leaks, etc.).
normal sunroofs are eh but pano sunroofs 👌👌
+ lower center of gravity (better handling) + more structural integrity (also better handling)
Also one less rattle to worry about.
Clint but sunroof is nice to have, especially in Florida

My wife has a 2018 GTI Autobahn with manual trans and we love it. If you are looking for your next car, test drive a GTI.
Mine is the 2018 Autobahn with a DSG. Love it dearly, especially since the DSG provides all the "engagement" I crave in manual mode and a relaxed driving experience when putting along at 5-20 mph in stop-n-go freeway traffic around Seattle.
I wish something the size of a golf still had a place in my life. I had a mkv gti apr tuned and absolutely loved driving that car. Had two kids and had to go big to a wagon. The wagon wasn't scratching my performance itch but the space it had was perfect for our livelihood. I was in the market for a new car and wanted a manual golf R so bad but I knew it didn't have the cargo space we needed so had to go bigger. The golf line will always have a place in my heart though.
I just got my 2017 gti , the same day I a tune from the dealer . apr stage 1 man I love it 292 hp 315 tq it pull hard as hell . Let the wife drive she won’t give it back to me . She has a veloster turbo

@@MrDarrenNice I live in the US so that would make too much sense for us. Our selection of fun wagons consist of super expensive luxury cars, and at this point I think I'm down to the merc AMG E wagon or the Volvo polestar. Awesome cars but a bit more than I want to spend. I ended up trading my A6 avant for a stinger GT1. No regrets the car is fantastic, but it is the first non VAG car I've had in the past 15 years so I am still recovering from the shock haha.

I saw one at my local VW dealership today and I INSTANTLY fell in love with the color
The MK7 line has been the best thus far. The real treat is when you tune them. Around 300whp with downpipe and a tune.

I’m thinking of getting out of my tech-filled Volvo V60 and into one of these (used). I’m feeling nostalgic for cars that actually make me FEEL something. Any weak points to watch for?
@e46Kyle you bet, man. I enjoy driving it as an every day ride. But there are some pretty cheap parts used. I haven't had any drive train or suspension issues. But some general body pieces have failed. Simple stuff, but detracts slightly. For example, I had a roof handle fail the first month I owned it. The start stop feature is pretty annoying but can be coded to memorize your last selection. Other than that, it's not a crazy powered car, but it's incredibly fun to throw into corners
No digital gauges, good. Can't stand digital display for fuel n things.

I get the used M2 thought, but you know that there is a lot more to it than just the asking price. First the GTI's (at least down here) go for well below MSRP, then you have a brand new car with a 6 year 72,000 mile full factory warranty compared to a used (most likely tracked and beat on) car with little to no warranty. So when things start to malfunction on that M2, buckle up. The GTI isn't a weekend track toy, it is a DD that you could also have some fun on a track with occasionally, so apples and oranges really. A much better consideration might be with that new Hyundai N model, out of those two which would you rather have?

The US version is spec'd with the lower end head unit, FWIW. Street pricing is at just under $28k USD, too, which makes it a very competitive offering v. any of the other hatches when comparable features are thrown in. The inclusion of the LED lights, LSD and bigger brakes is nice at that price point, too. It is nice that the Rabbit is also spec'd with the front and rear collision sensors, especially if used for grocery getting and the daily commute.

Great vid. I've owned GTIs since early 2000, and will continue to do so. The new "Rabbit" trim confuses me because, well, this is a Golf, but I guess now we're back to Rabbittgolf? Who cares! I'll be buying another one of these in the next few years...
Just a limited edition version of the S model with a salute to the past where in North America the Golf was known as the Rabbit. An effort on VW's part to keep the 2019 GTI in the news while waiting for the revamped 2020 model.
I got the 2018 DSG SE model and put a few bolts-on on E85.
My dyno numbers are 384 whp and 481 wtq, I am still impressed with the numbers I made and still stock engine and is20.
I love this car and to make it better put some coilovers.

The Rabbit Edition is the same as the Sport Edition from 2017. I own a 2017 Sport and I think it is the best bang for the buck with the LSD, Keyless access, wheels, Golf R brakes, traditional plaid interior just like this Rabbit Edition. Thank you for the overview!

As a 1st time, since the '70s, VW owner of a 2017 GTI SE I wish the Rabbit had been available at the time of my purchase. I love my SE mostly for the leather interior. The Tartan is nice but "less mature"? The only thing I'd change on my SE would be a Sunroof delete!! I can't, for the life of me, figure why you have to pay extra for a hole in the roof, especially for one whose sunshade refuses to stay closed? I live off the Carcinogenic Coast and that is entirely unacceptable in the dog days of summer! Out of the box power is probably fine in most instances. I chose to add a JB4 tune and a few suspension upgrades and my SE now makes me smile every time I get in it. The MQB GTI has one of the very best fun/utility quotients! VW If you would offer an interior materials option and maybe seating position memory I'd own two. Love my GTI !!!

The main reason for no sunroof on the sportier variants, Rabbit GTI or Golf R, is for weight savings and a lower center of gravity. Not to mention co$t reduction. Removing the sunroof shaves a good 50+lbs from the worst spot possible (high up in the car). You can notice it more in corners.
Mario Campos, also a good advantage is no leaks and or rattles which some GTI owners report.
You got my car! (a 4dr that color was my wife and my first car together)... What a rust monster! Great in the snow and a really fun car. Still driving VAG cars nearly 40 years later. I don't get the yoyo back and forth with the Rabbit name. Just keep Golf ferchrissake. I sold my bug turbo due to the lack of LSD that the GTI has now. Even then, FWD just can't put the power down once you put a good tune on it. The Golf R is just too expensive, especially used, so I went from the Bug to a couple year old used S3 which was a great value, and after a few grand of mods is a monster performer.

Great vid. Picking up my Autobahn Monday. Love this Rabbit edition in blue but needed that sunroof and red tornado. The red trim and brakes on a red exterior was just too sweet to ignore.

I had a Golf GTi mk 1 for 27(!!) years. Of all the following generations, the best Golf (i.m.o) was the mk 6. I still regret not buying a GTi 35, a special anniversary model with 235 bhp. Don’t know if it was sold in the U.S.

@@SWEETVENOM100 for me it is. I also go in for regular maintenance/services at my local Volkswagen dealership. Haven’t had any issues with my mark 7.5 gti. I’ve also did an aftermarket Borla S-type catback exhaust and dry flow aem intake.

My mom had a rabbit many years ago. She hated the hell out of it. She had a good laugh when she heard they brought it back
Im a parts consultant for a VW dealership and we just did a bunch of APR upgrades to a brand new Rabbit GTI, downpipe, carbon intake, stage 2 tuning and DSG tune and this thing is sick. the customer already ows a Golf R and he is super stoked on his Rabbit. in stock trim they are great cars but after the APR goodies its a little monster.

Owned 2 GTI’s : still overall the best cars I have owned - loving my C43 but it doesn’t give me the enjoyment I got in the VW’s unless I have it in Sport +, and even then, it’s just the engine. I may have to go back one day!

VeeDubb Bunni. Nice to see Volkswagen has not adopted the huge open mouth black grill so many of the other makes are using. The Rabbit-Golf has always been a good looking and practical shape. Looking forward to the next generation of VW design like the ID. Wish cars still had some color options for the interiors. All or mostly black is so boring and a bit depressing. Interiors in the 50s and 60s were more joyful. Keep up the humor in your videos. 🐰
I agree with you @4:25 I took out a GTI for a test drive I noticed that the upshifts seems like they were going through a torque converter.I owned a MK7 Golf R(DSG) and I remember the shifts being quite crisp.I wasn't impressed with the engine sound in the cabin.It sounded more like an intrusion rather than an exhaust note.There will also be a TCR GTI special edition which will have a diff. and the Golf R motor.That model will be coming to Australia(where I live)I don't know whether it will be made available in your part of the world?
It is quite a contrast at the moment, Australia has been experiencing temperatures of 40-46 Celsius while you guys are freezing.It is 43 Celsius as I'm writing this comment.

I love my MKV manual. Not as much power as the newer ones and it is the base with no extras, but it’s a great daily.
Is this GTI rabbit considered a MK 7.5?
I have been considering Rabbit GTI vs going full Golf R. Manual Rabbit with driver assist package (DAP) for auto high beams and adaptive cruise is 36K MSRP (before freight/pdi/fees/taxes). A Golf R is ~44K with manual/DAP. Now it's only 9K more to go full R. Even less if you were considering GTI autobahn. It used to be a ~15K more for R just a few years ago, GTI prices are creeping up..... that diff is not that great and still has weird understeer characteristics, full R feels way better to drive. I've never seen anyone say the opposite. If you can afford this, see if you can afford a bit more. Unless you really want that plaid... in that case, buy a used 2015-2017 MK7 GTI. Oh, and I really liked the intro time travel/infinity stones skit! 😆👍

Almost every single review i have read says the GTi is the better drivers car than the R - the R is better around a track but the GTi is better in the real world..
I have the EU Gti 230 - i think the sound is a bit crap and always wished id gotten the R (mainly for the noise) - so mabey im a hypocrite though haha
I currently own a 2015 GTI, 210hp non Power Pack with open diff and brake vectoring (XDS). It's decent, but the R drives like an entirely different performance car. Less efficient due to AWD system, but I'm definitely leaning towards R vs GTI for next car.
I was gonna get the R fully loaded for $43K, but instead I bought a fully loaded S3 for $46K.

Nice video guys VW is the king of the hatch for this reason very cool bringing the rabbit back at 37k not bad considering what you get if you want to save a few bucks I would buy it in a manual now as far as it being able to buy a used M2 I don’t think that’s possible in Canada. What you could buy is a golf R used in the mid 30’s which is a tough choice considering the R offers AWD.

Got mine a couple days ago in black. I miss being able to move the cruise control setting up or down by 10km/h... otherwise fully satisfied. I do think it's funny manual drivers still think they do a better job than DSG. Maybe fine tune the mode settings?
At 6 foot I used my 2016 GTI Autobahn with a helmet no problem, with a sunroof, I would go with no sunroof as well but just thought I would let you know😎👍

man, we have seen this car since 2015 with almost no changes... getting so old, cant wait for next gen.
2019 models are the MK7.5 which got a facelift, 7 speed DSG and come standard with golf R brakes in the USA. I'd consider that a change.

Dag-gum, this car is making it harder to choose a brz (premium) and/or the GSW4mo/Alltrack-S 6spd as my next car. I have a mk4 gti now and I want something different, but this car puts up a great argument to stay w/a gti.
Manual seats are lighter. No sunroof is lighter. However all the good and they (vw) put a rabbit sticker on the back...a sticker! Good to see it keeps the plaid seats.
In the US they apparently have that area blank and mail you a silver metal Rabbit logo badge to stick on. Not as obvious as the sticker size, but something a bit more solid.
