Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM Lens Review by a Wedding Photographer Bokeh, Sharpness, Distortion

  • In this video, I review my Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM lens. I cover the bokeh, image stabilization, distortion, lens flare, vignetting, and sharpness. As a wedding photographer, I was looking for a wide angle lens that would be versatile to pair with my RF 50mm 1.2 and RF 85mm 1.2. This lens replaced my EF 17-40mm and is much sharper than that lens. I chose the RF 15-35 2.8 over the RF 24-70mm 2.8 as 24mm sometimes isn't wide enough to capture the wedding venues, reception halls, and group portraits. This is an incredible lens that I highly recommend! Thanks for watching!

    Great video - subscribed! I have this lens and absolutely love it but have really got into primes lately. My question is - do you think there is any merit in getting the 35mm prime (either rf 1.8 or ef 1.4) I already have the ef85mm 1.4 IS.
    Or would you consider the 50mm 1.2 instead - or maybe this is too similar to close focal to the 85??? Arrghhh?

    • @ShaneLongPhotography

      Hey Adam! Tough call! The RF 50mm 1.2 is my favorite. I often pair my 50 with either the 35 or the 85. You would think they are too close but I actually like how it turns out. The 35mm and 85mm is also a great combo. So many great options. I really like the EF 35 1.4. Hoping they come out with an RF version soon! Thanks for the sub!

  • @JaredRibic
    @JaredRibic 3 роки тому +1

    Just received my RF 28-70mm f/2L and this RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS is next on my list.
    Currently I'm using the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L (first version) and it's really showing its age. Once I upgrade to the RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS the only EF lens I'll have left in my bag will be the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS (version 2). I don't like the reviews I've seen on the new RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS because even though I could 'deal with' the extending barrel (although I don't like it) what I can't deal with is how much you need to twist the zoom ring to get from 70mm to 200mm. So I'm hanging onto my EF version until Canon makes an RF 70-200mm that fits my needs better.

    • @ShaneLongPhotography
      @ShaneLongPhotography  3 роки тому +1

      You will have an incredible kit! My friend has the RF 70-200 and said he has to turn it more than the old one. You will love this 15-35. The more I use it the better it seems to get!

    • @Seitenwerk
      @Seitenwerk 2 роки тому +2

      With the RF70-200 f2.8 being my first 70-200 I cant compare. But I have used in on many shootings and its not a problem at all. You can turn it with simple twist so there is no need to let go and grab the ring again for a full 70-200 move. Longer twist range should actually be a positive (as long as its still within a single turn) as it allows for finer control of the focal length

    • @JaredRibic
      @JaredRibic 2 роки тому

      @@Seitenwerk - I did end up getting the RF 70-200mm and I love the image quality, but not the ergonomics. There is definitely a difference in ergonomics between the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS and the new RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS. The ergonomics are actually better on the RF 70-200mm f/4L IS by comparison is better, but I need f/2.8, and I need the tripod collar.
      Waiting for Canon to redesign this lens and come out with a "version II" and hopefully they make the next RF 70-200mm f/2.8L with better ergonomics.

    I'm deciding between this lens and the 85mm f/1.2. I have an RF 50 and EF 24-70 and EF 70-200 lenses. There have been a few times when a wider lens would have been useful.

      Hey Casey! Sorry for the slow response! I have been crazy busy over here with wedding season and haven't had time to check my UA-cam comments. You may have already made up your mind. Depends on what you shoot, but having the 15mm focal range is really helpful. I would only invest in the 85 if portraits is your primary focus as it is spendy lens. All the best!

      @@ShaneLongPhotography I bought the RF 85 shortly after making my comment. It has worked fabulously at a birthday party and wedding with fall leaves in the background. I got an RF 15-35 this week because I thought the focal length would have worked great during the home-wedding I did last weekend and it should be good for the birthday party I'm doing tomorrow.

    • @Seitenwerk

      @@caseyhartman7094 How's your experience with the 15-35 so far? My setup is a bit similar to yours (28-70, 85, 70-200). So the only thing missing is the wide angle lens. I don't think it will best used regularly (although I thought the same thing of anything below 50mm, until I got my 28-70 and noticed that I liked the look and style of wider focal lenses for events). But there are situation like smaller indoor rooms at business shootings weddings etc or weddings dances etc where 28 is not enough. So having the 15-35 is probably a lens I should at least have in my portfolio I guess. So what's your opinion? Was it worth adding it to your equipment?

    • @caseyhartman7094

    Great review.Just for interest why not the 14 -35 F4 , has a noticeable wider view , outstanding L image quality, half the price ,50% lighter .It's only one stop difference which is negated by the outstanding high ISO low noise of latest image sensors and in particular the R5 and R6. The IBIS and lens image stabilization as u pointed out again allows for slower shutter speeds.
    These wide angle lens are not for primarily creating Bokeh .

      Interestingly a recent wedding photographer I talked to and asked about getting a lens of this range told me he wouldn't get a f4 version (not especially this one) again if he had the choice. Depending on your use case (landscape for example) f4 could be totally fine (as you probably go even higher than that anyway).
      For events/weddings f2.8 vs f4 can be a huge difference just like I experience it often with my 28-70 f2. Sounds not like much, but its double the light. The 1mm difference shouldn't be noticeable as that's just a small step backwards to compensate, if even necessary.

      Great question. A lot of times on a wedding day, I am working in small rooms and don't have a lot of space. The 50 is just a little more versatile for me. It also allows me to get the "selfie" angle more easily. And with less compression it is a little more slimming for brides.

    We've recently moved from the 5DIV to the R5, along with 24-70 and 70/200, both at 2.8. The only EF lens left, is the EF 100mm macro, but we don't use it so much for a wedding props close-ups, as we've expected to. So nowadays I am debating myself, if our next RF lens should be the new 100/2.8 or this 15-35/2.8. I think that in terms of the weddings, especially for the dancing scenes and interiors, the 15-35 would be more handy and practical, than a RF 100 macro? Of course there is going to be small overlaps with the 24-70, but some ppl call all those lens a "holy trinity". Tough choices, as I am not sure my wife is willing to carry 4 lenses, if we would buy all of them :-)

There are so many tight spaces that need to be photographed. If it were me, I would stick with the EF 100mm as it as great lens, and just adapt it for the detail photos, and purchase the 15-35mm. Hope that helps!

    I know nothing about cameras, But I do know I want to shoot high quality video. Vlog like video maybe, Is it smart to pair this lens with a canon 90D or what would u suggest? Btw I’m new to all this.

      Hello Carlos! Unfortunately this lens is not compatible with the 90D as it only works on the new mirrorless cameras. But look at the EF 16-35 f/4 or EF 16-35 2.8 III Those both would work on your camera and would be great for vlogs. Also the 17-40 which I did a review on is another option! Hope that helps!

      @@carlosarevalo3224 Don’t use those lenses for vlogging on the 90D. They are full frame lenses so they’ll be cropped 1.6x. Grab the EF-S 10-18mm if you want a vlogging lens for the 90D.

    What about the 14-35?

      The 14-35mm is f/4, which doesn't produce as much bokeh as the 15-35mm does at f/2.8.

      I haven't played with that one yet either. It's definitely cheaper but like Casey said it is an f4. That said I used the 17-40 f/4 for years at weddings and it did great for me. There is also the 16mm prime now thats pretty cheap. I like that Canon is giving us options!

    I'm getting married at Bavaria Downs. I saw it in one of your clips towards the start of the video. I was supposed to get married in May but had to push it to May of 2021. I really want to start shooting weddings. I've been shooting motorsports
    professionally for the past year. What should the first steps I take to get into the field? I also shoot with a R5, I'm waiting for the 85mm 12 to come in and the 100-500mm.

      Bavaria Downs is amazing!!! Love that venue! Cool that you want to start with weddings. When I first started I worked for a company - George Street. I allowed me to get experience and build my portfolio. The other thing to do is start letting your circle know that you want to do that. Someone will get married the more people see you photographing weddings, the more word will spread! I took Amy and Jordan's Business Course. I would highly recommend it! www.amyandjordan.com/business-course

    This is great lens! The only thing which was distracting me and kind of shocking is that the video (background) is weirdly moving, I dont know the English workd for this (English is my 3rd language) but it looks like recording on the phone (at least mine have the same weird background movement :/ ) is it called distortion? I wouldn't expect it from the camera which is so expensive.

      Great observation! I noticed that too when I went through my footage! Not sure what it is but my guess is it has to do with the IBIS. I never really noticed it when I vlogged with the 17-40. All the best!

      @@ShaneLongPhotography i thought it has to be the ibis and to be honest it scared me because I wanted to buy canon R6 but after seeing this I am now not too sure what to do because I mainly want camera for video and for photography using manual vintage lenses. I now record with my old 700D.

      Maybe check out my most recent video of the RF 50mm 1.8. I used the RF 15-35 to record my self in that video. I shot most of it at like 20-24mm and didn't notice the shake in it when I went through the footage.

      @@ShaneLongPhotography yeah the problem seems to be only on wide angle lenses (15mm). the reason is just one or two axis of the ibis. canon reduced it a bit in their latest firmware for the r6/r5. but its still noticabel.
