I have to do the same thing to start my 240, except I do it from the throttle leaver without opening the hood. A few revolutions of cranking full choke, then I snap the throttle down to idle to get it to fire. I don't think this is normal. It never acted like that when it was new, just in the last few years. 35 years of fairly extreme service with mower and rototiller, never any major breakdowns. They don't make em like they used to.

I just bought one of these off the side of the road for $100. No deck. But a plow blade and weights. Runs and moves, but blade doesn’t lovk in the up position and NO BRAKES. Hopefully not hard to work on. Sounds exactly like this one including the surges.
I bought a 2021 Craftsman T240 turn tight exculsive series Tractor Kohler 7000 series 22 horsepower 725cc V Twin engine with 3 year unlimited hours warranty 46" deck looked at john deere Husqvarna simplicity none matched up to the craftsman T240 turn tight it has a 5" turning ability..built like a little tank it's 72" long 48" high wight 630 pounds awesome Tractor..it's a exclusive Run ran from 2019 to 2021...unfortunately the newer versions from 2022 to present have been downgraded glad I got mine when I did..
i have 2 lx176 riders w/those engines , and 2 180 riders w/the 17 hp (fc540v) versions . very good engines . i even swapped an fc540v on to my jd 320 rider when the plastic cam gear broke in its water cooled twin kawasaki .
i collect john deeres,have 51 of them,everything from model 60 and 70 riders,a model 56,4 of the 345's,262's 225,d100 la110,130,lt155,lt 180,and several other models,buy them not running,and repair them as a hobby
which model do you think is most reliable and easiest to work on as far as changing belts/ blades etc ....only using it for mowing grass and want at least 48 inch - 60 inch ?

Please DONT by a NEW husqavarna ! Bought a hydrostatic in 2014, didn't get 3 years use from it for 2500.00 ! Left a BAD taste of that junk !.👎
@timothyroatenberry6348 when I bought the Craftsman T240 turn tight in 2021 I also looked at Husqvarna it just didn't measure up to the Craftsman
