  • Here are two of @WhitewaterGundogs Field Bred English Springer Spaniels as they work on more advanced control concepts in the field. This drill uses two white pigeons as the temptation "sucker bird" and for this time we added a shot with the thrown bird to increase the difficulty. Control of your working dog in the field is vital, whether you are training for hunting scenarios or Field Trials. Unfortunately Maverick's video got corrupted when the battery died mid run. It would have been a great one to show as he did struggle more with the added difficulty and would have been good to show how Rob handled it. In any case even with these two veteran dogs, you see the differences between between the dogs and how they deal with the direction provided by Rob. This is an advanced drill so the dogs need to have a great deal of field experience prior to expecting them to be able to handle this kind of control. Both of these dogs have had hundreds of birds in the field, have been thoroughly conditioned to the commands used in the field prior to putting them in this kind of advanced drill. As always please comment, ask questions and share with your dog friends who would like additional training opportunities. Until the next time, happy training and hunting!

Good question Shawn, this is the second time they have run this drill (video of first time does not have the #2) and only difference on this run was the addition of the shot with the throwing of the pigeon. All of their training has prepared them for these kinds of drills/ "go where I tell you to go when I tell you"....right cast means go right, left catch means go left, suck in whistle means come in, turn whistle means turn, hup whistle means sit down. It all ties together to form the whole and help them to know what is expected of them when presented with this kind of challenge.
