Hi all, Rob Barlow here, owner operator of Whitewater Gundogs. As a Pro Trainer for nearly 40 years, I have had the opportunity to train, compete, title and Champion countless dogs in AKC Springer Spaniel Field Trials, AKC and UKC/HRC Hunt Test, Pointer Field Trials, National Bird Dog Challenge and too many quality birddogs to count. Over this time I have developed a training program that works and now I want to share that program with all of you in the form of a Train the Trainer Series designed to help you train your gundog. Over the course of this series we will be covering everything from picking and bringing up your pup through general obedience, introduction to the gun, collar conditioning, retriever drills and a multitude of field work examples and advanced training tips and tricks to guide you through the process start to finish. There are no quick fixes here, just good practices to help you be the best trainer you can be. Good Luck and be sure to SUBSCRIBE for all content.
The Whys and How's of Clip Wing Birds in Bird Dog Training
If you have watched many of our videos, we use ALOT of clip wing birds in training our dogs. If you want a bird dog...it takes birds! @WhitewaterGundogs Rob talks a little about some of the training scenarios we use clip wings for and finishes up showing how he clips his birds in such a way that they can be used again as flyers in the next training session

Building Upland Pattern Development with two 7 Month old English Cocker Spaniels

With this session, Rob is working with the two Cockers on pattern development. Little River (the gold one) runs super big when questing in the field, fun to watch, but not necessarily what you want in a working flushing dog. The goal is that birds will be produced within gun range, and as you will see from her natural pace, she is well out of gun range with those big sweeping turns. Watch as he...

Puppy Retrieves with Callie and Dahlia 20 week Old Springer Spaniels with Pigeon, Chukar, Pheasant.
Poor bird.
Great job! The training club I belong to has a few folks with standard Poodles. Very well trained dogs. They run in both spaniel tests and jh lab tests.
Another great video and super helpful! Do you happen to know what Winger you are using? The wingers I have experience with are more for dead birds and I really like the idea of putting clips in the winger!
I have two different wingers. The one that i think would work for you is the Gunner Up I have the smaller one i believe is called son of a gun or something like that. Zinger winger is the other one i have. I'm not sure if they have a smaller one. You must have went back and watched some vidios.
Another great video!
Nothing more beautiful than a working dog working and being ecstatic about it. Well done.
Thank you, Maverick does LOVE to work!!
What level of stim are you using on the e-collar?
I'm using Dogtra's RT Edge This particular collar has 3 levels of stimulation at each level. example level 1 has low, medium and 1. It have this at each level 1-8. With that said i generally use medium 1 to 1. Some of the spaniels are super sensitive to stimulation so I use low 1 to medium 1 for those dogs.
Cool stuff👍👍👍 like I said at the trial I watch when I’m charting, about the right length of time 😊
How many times do you do this drill with each dog?
that'll vary with each indivdual dog. generally 3 to 4 times
love this drill
Thanks we'll be posting more on this series
Another great video Rob, looking forward to more in this series
everyone will be moving forward in the next few days, will get Step Three up shortly!
I love how they toss dirt when they take off!
Thank you Rob for the great video! Like the additional steps you’ve added to this drill! We have used the ‘beginners’ drill for years. Will incorporate the your additions.
Thanks! Glad you are finding the videos helpful. There will be a few additional videos to this series as the dogs progress through the steps....stay turned:)
Really cool drill Rob!
Great drill. I’ll give that a try this weekend. Thanks
she's a fun pup.
Yes she is, super fun big running little bit of a thing! Is going to be fun to watch her mature. Thanks for watching!
When do you guys think you will have more pups?
Last Hawk Maddie litter is scheduled for her next heat- breeding should be in the next week or so (fingers crossed) making whelping end of December.
Do you have a video where you present commands. From the start as a pup, into and through field training
Not all in one video, probably closest puppy progression video is the "Developing Your Hunting Springer Spaniel puppy foundation building milestones 8 weeks-6 mo." All commands are reinforced through repetition and essentially the pups are learning the "Here" command with verbal and whistle. "Here" is the only command we insist on with our pups. Formal Obedience does not start until 6-8 months, best view of that progression is through the "Introduction to the E-Collar" There are 13 videos in the series that show Draven's progression through the program. Prior to these lessons with the collar on, all of the same material was covered without the collar, there is a ton of good info there about how the other handling commands are incorporated from yard work to field work. Hope this helps!
I like this method! I always seem to be fighting the lack of training grounds and not having a training group to make this happen. Pup looks great!
Your videos always have such nice veiws.
Thank you! We enjoy where we live and train.
Would this drill help an older dog improve its quartering?
it could help, a little bit harder to do with a steady dog, we'll be posting videos of casting drills soon these may be better suited for older dogs. We'll be doing this with two labs that we are teaching to quarter as well as one 11 month old spaniel. Should have these up first part of November
Do you hunt a season before working on steadiness?
For our Field Trial prospects we would not hunt them prior to being reliably steady. In this video you see Boone who is not steady running, in this case his owner will be having him on lead during this hunting season for experience, and then he plans to bring him back after the season to steady him up. Boone's owner is not interested in Field Trials so steadiness is not as much of a priority to him as it will be for McKenzie and River.
Crucial time in a young gun dog's training. This needs to go right or future problems could occur. This pup is well on it's way. Good job.
Thanks David, yes, this is one of the most rewarding, and as you said crucial times in puppy development, all three went through this part of training very well. Did you get the chance the watch all three of the pups? It has been great fun to develop these three littermates, all excel at natural drive and ability, different styles, different temperaments. Will be great to watch them grow up!
Love your content guys! Thank you for sharing! I have a 1 yo female springer!
Thank you, it is fun sharing our little family with everyone, so happy to hear you are enjoying them!
This is a great video, thanks!
I will be bringing home a working English cocker for my first bird dog in November. We are so excited!
Should the dog be competent on the stop whistle before competing?
Absolutely! Even for Puppy Stakes the dog must be steady to the flush, shot and always to the hup whistle. And even when they are consistently steady in the field during training, you want to see that consistency hold true for as many bird contacts as you can provide to ensure that holds during a trial.
Next question- Should I take the risk to hunt with a spaniel that isn’t steady or stops? I just got him an ecollar. I’m in a hunting club but the other dogs are more advanced and I just watch. My dog is inconsistent because his training is inconsistent.
@@boblathrop9983 if your planning on field trialing or hunt test.. Your dog needs to be steady. if you hunt with an unsteady dog the chance of getting him reliably steady later is not good and if you do the flush could be hampered. Buying an E-Collar and strapping it on your dog really isn't. a good idea either. if you watch the Draven series you will see how to properly collar condition your dog as well as how to steady your dog. I'm not in favor of hunting my dogs with a group of dogs. Never liked the coyote mentality that creates.
This is an awesome compilation of cool stuff!!
Good stuff - looking forward to a new pup in mid-dec, a small munsterlander, my first pointer. Looking forward to the training. Hopefully will be as easy as our labs have been to create a bird dog.
Thank you. Wishing you the best with your new pup!
Nice run. Love puppy trials. I'll try to make it down to ND next spring.
Thanks, he is a fun one for sure! Puppy trials are a hoot, never know what might happen. Be sure to introduce yourself if you see we are there, Draven will likely be running Open by then.
If I do this drill and it goes all wrong , what then? Asking for a friend 🙂
LOL..."goes all wrong", is pretty vague, but I will try to address what you are asking. This is a really advanced drill for dogs who are thoroughly conditioned to all commands, specifically the turn whistle and here. Calling a dog off of that clearly visible and very tempting bird to take the command to go where I tell them to go is high level training and requires an experienced dog. If any of the prerequisite training and experience is not in place do not attempt to put it all together. Take some steps back in your training, concentrate on once piece of the drill at a time. For example: put your dog at hup remotely, (take several steps away from them) hand throw a clip wing bird, preferably in the direction in which you could intervene if necessary, release the dog for the retrieve then when the dog is half way to the bird, give the hup command, sit them down, and call them back to you without going after that bird. This is just one step of preparing for this kind of advanced drill. A good series to watch would be the Draven E-Collar Series, all of this series work can be done without an E-Collar, and prepares you and your working dog conditioning the commands you will need for future training. Also any of the Control videos are all part of getting to these Advanced skill levels. Hope this helps your friend😆
@@WhitewaterGundogs yes thanks, I have and train trial dogs. Not a drill I have used before so thanks for sharing it.
@@windyplainsinc1298 excellent! Hopefully meet you in the field at some point!
It looks like the judges are part of the test? I mean, it looks like the dog had to go right by them on the way to the water mark.....
At the very beginning is called a "Walk Up" we come out of holding blind and take a sharp left then proceed to the spot that the bird is launched then judges are behind so they can judge if the dog is steady for the walkup prior to being released. Dogs are so focused on the retrieve, rarely do they pay any attention at all to the judges.
Do you think males have more drive or females?
In our experience sex of the dog makes little difference in drive, it is individual to the dog and their breeding.
Ok just curious Thank you
Getting my first ever field Springer/dog from Prairie Rose gun dogs. Mom is due in a week and pups are ready by October. Both excited and scared. Hopefully im ready 🥹
Congrats, from Rick? A healthy mix of fear and excitement is normal, but temper that with full doses of love and attention, you have this!!
Oh my! This is fantastic, they did awesome!
They are doing great!
So fun to watch❤
Thanks Jackie, they are a fun bunch for sure!
I would take any one of them but the second pup looks fantastic.
All nice only one left
This awesome. I use coturnix Too .They can’t fly for crapp and my dogs chase and bust them up.
I've been using these birds since 2002. this strain was brought in from Afghanistan where they are a migratory bird. They fly pretty well if fed right. Anywhere from 40 yards to just plan leave the field. the breeder raise them for falcon food.
A seasoned test does not have a triple as the video stated. It’s a double marked land A double marked water A walk-up or tracking or quartering A blind on land A blind on water Part of the test muse include a diversion
You are correct. Flint has Seasoned Title and is training for HRCH Finished and AKC Master, which does have triple marks. We are always looking toward the next level that the dogs will be tested under, training harder than the test requires, always.
Please do some follow ups on this. Thanks!
Sorry, Jay life got hectic around here with new litter of pups so videographer aka: Sonda, has not been able to get videos up. Will get on it this week🤣
She is a perfect pup!
Thanks Jay, We think so too, she is out of our FC HRCH "Hawk" and (2 points from FC) HR "Maddie". They have produced 8 pups and 7 of them are actively running or training for Field Trials, expecting Dahlia will be ready by next Spring.
Great video! I do basically the same drills with my spaniel. Things start to go awry when she feels the feathers. She starts chomping. Any suggestions? Thanks
A really strong recall. I'm going to assume she is doing this on the ground and not the table. I would go as far as putting a check cord on her and throw her a bird, as soon as she gets her mouth on it pull on the check cord and give the here command. The key is to get her to return to you immediately i wouldn't worry about whether the bird came back with her or not. This is called indirect training fixing a problem by working on a different issue.
Thank you
Good video
Perfect timing for me. My little Penny retrieves good but still drops birds at my feet. these drills should put it all in place. Thanks for sharing.
wonderful. as you said have dog come to him, instead of him going to the dog. great work. love the series. needs SHARP "here"
Yes, I think Paul went home with some good homework, will be fun to see their progress
Fun getting to watch Mack's brothers and sisters moving forward. Can't wait to get going with Mack! Figure another month or so then start on some yard work. Foxtails around here make field work difficult but we will be ready in the fall! 😊
Foxtail is terrible this year, forced into the short wheat field for now, but that will be out too tall for the young ones in a few weeks. Lots of water work in our future.
Is there a technique when I can do this alone?
Unfortunately not at this stage or with this drill, most effective if you can have at least two people. In the beginning the birds would be delivered back to which ever of the handlers throws the bird, and then called to the next side, for the toss and retrieve, repeating for the One Out-One Up. This would ideally be repeated over the course of a couple weeks until the dog starts automatically delivering the bird and then heading for the other side. Sometimes with older pups you can use planted birds on either side of the field, but not nearly as effective and much more difficult to get the desired results. You could always come to Oregon and we can put you through training. Have a new litter due July, we could start you off 🤣😂😁
@@WhitewaterGundogs lol I wish I could blast out there. The reason I asked is my two year old Springer hunts fine , but I would like more of a field trial type quartering. I just need my friends (with labs… lol..) to understand the timing of a drill like this.HAVE A GREAT DAY!
@@jaybird4610 yes, a couple of friends will help the process!
I’ll share this with my 10 month old Boykin Spaniel, Oliver. It’s one step forward and three steps backwards with any dog named Oliver.
LOL...maybe something about that, but pretty sure it's just part of training in general 😅
Does it hurt the quail?
No, not at all. Key is starting these pups with birds early (we start at 6-7 weeks) very soft mouth, and learn early on how to carry without hurting the bird. Sometimes if you wait for live bird introduction until they are older (some programs suggest waiting until over 12 Months) In our experience, much higher risk that mouth issues can occur.
Andy, we just posted a video of our new Pup McKenzie- 7 weeks old, with her first birds, this might help show how we choose to introduce birds to help avoid mouth issues as the dogs progress in their development.
Very impressive. I am starting to train Seasoned with my working cocker. This is very helpful so I can see where I am headed.
Glad it was helpful!
Really enjoyed this one! Trying to decide if I want to try to do another seasoned run with my cocker and this helps me figure out what I will need to work on. Thanks!!
Rogue finished his Seasoned level last year, you should come up for the Lower Columbia Hunt Test, June 21-23, excellent grounds!
@@WhitewaterGundogs definitely thinking of doing that one!
