- Hello everyone! This week I sang The Wellerman (the sea shanty) by The Longest Johns and like 800 other people!
Ask and you shall receive.
I know I say this all the time but I think I really mean it when I say this is the hardest I’ve worked on a cover ever. Every noise and BG vocal was made completely from scratch, either by the BG vocalists, me, my brother or Jeysun (and his uncle). I did not know true fear until I was pouring water from glass to glass in front of my microphone and laptop.
The BG vocals alone played such a huge part in this cover and I’d like to take a moment to thank everyone who said yes to my pleading! I’m so sad that I didn’t get to use all the adlibs and alternate speaking parts everyone recorded because they had me in complete stitches. The cover would be nothing without your drunken singing, so truly, thank you!
And finally, a huge, massive thank you to Jeysun for going absolutely above and beyond with this instrumental. I am so over the moon with how everything turned out and I’m so sorry that you broke your mug while recording the foley (also that you bit into an onion not only once, but twice but I refuse to take any blame or involvement in that choice). You’re a real pal, thank you so much!

What I love about The Wellerman is that everyone has a slightly different version. Whether it's the way the words are sung or the music in the background, it's all unique and it always sounds amazing.
That's a sea shanty for ya. Always love how the same song can be sung so many different times with different energies yet still be the same song at heart

Thanks so much for having me on this!! I had so much fun recording everything, ESPECIALLY the dumb talking parts!!!
When you listen to the lyrics, you find the song is about a whaling vessel whose captain has sighted a HUGE whale and harpooned it... but has no feasible way to haul it up and kill it because his ship is too small to haul it in close for a shipside kill and he lost his boats in the first attempt at a boating kill.
But out of stubborn pride, he refuses to cut the whale loose because not only would it by a huge amount of money, bringing down a whale that big would be a huge feather in his cap.
Meanwhile, the whale is just dragging the ship randomly around the ocean because he won't cut it loose and can't haul it in (if he tried, he would be hauling his ship under the water after the whale) because it's too small, and his crew are getting angry, hoping the Wellerman (slang term for a resupply vessel from the Weller whale oil company) comes and finds them to bring them their bonus pay (sugar tea and rum) and fresh supplies before they starve. All they can do is that and pray either the captain comes to his damned senses or the whale never decides to take a deep dive and drag the whole ship under... since they have no boats there would be no abandoning ship, they would all just drown.
They've also decided that, should they actually get the damn whale in the end, once the tonguing (cutting the meat into strips and packing it up to deliver for whale oil processing) is done and they've put to port to drop off their kill, screw this prideful idiot, they quit, he can find another crew whose lives he can risk over vanity.

@@anony_mouse4168 Dove far enough below the surface the harpoons couldn't reach it. That's 'diving low'. Diving DEEP would drag the ship under if the whale's big enough to drag the ship, 'take it in tow' as it's worded here.
@@anony_mouse4168 Or it did come, but the captain is still refusing to cut the f**king whale loose and has spent decades being dragged around the sea by the whale in a mariner legend very similar to the Flying Dutchman.
Either interpretation works, honestly. A whale dragging around a ghost ship of dead whalers is as good a tale as any.

This sounds like it could be the opening song to a musical, with Anna hyping up the bar, telling stories of her crew.
Imagine you’re the younger sister of a sailor. He always used to sing you this song when you were little, and you still remember it. He died at sea when you were only six years old. Twenty years later, you’re at a bar and you start singing the song. The entire bar stops to listen and eventually join in. And little do you know your brother is singing with you.

He knows you know, you seem emotional & your voice cracked a bit; he says "he died with this in his lips. He was a brave man" -& you just know he won't say more. He smiles & orders for more rum. You say it's on the house, ask if he's still working with that ship; he says he never abandons old pals & you're now suggesting you can be the most congenial addition to the crew. @@a_viewer5386 Y does that matter. Their can still be an animation for it. And as someone else said context can be changed through animation. Like have u ever seen a music video where the video has not much to do with the actual song? Sam Hunt’s take your time is a good example of that. It doesn’t always have to be exactly like what the song is about (and sometimes it makes it better like with the Sam hunt video). Context can be very easily changed and not just through animation. Anna singing hellfire makes it have completely different context with a female singing it.

This whole song makes me so happy!The "Captain crew and AAAAAAAAAALLLL" around 1:54 gives me the feeling that you get in and mostly around the outer edges of your cheeks when you smile so absurdly big that it is unfortunately not entirely socially acceptable(like, both baring your teeth and making an expression that a cartoon character under great strain or pain would make). That is the best way that I know how to describe how this cover of this song makes me feel. The song also may or may not have caused me to leap, dance, stomp, and spin about my apartment's living room on the third floor of the building for the duration of the song......thrice..........at 2:00 A.M. In conclusion, thank you so much, your voice and the way in which you sing and the energy that your music gives off all make me feel so very much depending on the song. My favorites are the ones that makes me feel like an explorer/adventurer/occasional reveler of sorts such as "The Trail We Blaze", "The Wellerman", and "Its Tough to be a God". I also love the ones where you sound incredibly powerful/Disney villan-like, such as the "Friends on the Other Side" and several others that I can't think of off the top of my head. Overall so much of your music gives me the feeling (both physically and mentally) of the biggest smile my face can physically produce. Thank You!
