Creating 11 small abstract paintings showing several processes, tools, paints, mark making & layers.

- In this video, I create 11 smaller paintings and go through the process of different styles using stencils, papers I made, tools to make marks, painting with different paints and so much more.I created this video to show how these papers can be used for studies for larger paintings, framed as they are, ripped up for collage, or just used as learning styles without fear of messing up a larger canvas!! The video is LONG, but it shows a process of a couple days of layering the paintings. Some of the video I talk through the process I am doing, some I just paint, and throughout I add what paint or tools I am using. I use chalk pastels, stablio pencils, oil pastels, graphite, handmade and bought stencils, high flow points and soft body paints, different brushes, a palette knife, and other tools. I even use coffee ground and tea bags!!! Whether you watch the entire video or part of it, I hope you can learn something new you might take with you in your art journey!!!

Beautiful work. I love it.
Thank you so very much
You are my favorite kind of artist in every way. Loved every silence, gesture, word and especially the outright joy you express out loud, with us. Great color sense!
Your comment is so kind and touched my heart. THANK YOU for watching, and taking the time to leave such a wonderful comment.
Over 1 hour... I can not say how much I needed this. I will absorb every detail.
Thank you for watching .... this was one of earlier ones.... there was one I struggled with in terms of filming, but I hope it has enough in it to help
@@CherylWilsonArt It is rather hard to find videos where an artist is honest with everything regarding the process. I am struggeling with letting mistakes happen. So it is essential for me to find people who are at a stage where they are so calm that they can just show how they work. If you would have just shown the result I might not even have started. Even if it is an oder video it helped me a lot! Thank you.
Thank you for watching
Love love, love all your pieces, especially the ochre and rusty orange one
thank you so much!! I appreciate your watching and commenting so much
These are gorgeous Cheryl! I want to let you know your music is fine. With no noise at all it seems like you’re not there or my IPad has somehow stopped your tutorial when you may have just gone to get something and are coming right back. There are some artists that have an annoying voice or their music is extremely repetitive and thus it too becomes annoying. Then the listener has the choice to simply turn the volume down and the listener who doesn’t mind it may continue to listen. As for me, I like your music and if I didn’t like a particular track, I’d just turn the volume off for a while. You’re doing a great job and share a ton of great information and teaching. I appreciate you very much. Oh , also I did hit the bell and have been served your videos. The more I watch, the more the algorithm serves them up. Cheryl, thank you.👍🏼☺️
Thank you so very much…. I appreciate everything you said! From all the comments, it doesn’t seem like there’s any one reason why my views went down other than UA-cam is just not showing them. I do know someone private messaged me and said that about the time reviews went down, the algorithm was changed so smaller creators like under 5000 we’re being shown more than channels that they feel like mine which is almost 8000 are not shown as much which I don’t know why cause 8000 is still small. I did decide to compile all the comments come to a conclusion thank you so much for your kind words. I appreciate your support more than you know.
@@CherylWilsonArt My pleasure… 👍🏼💖
The seagulls just added to the coolness of the video‼️. I love your art
I so wish
Thoroughly enjoyed watching your processes, thank you for sharing your work. 👍
My pleasure 😊 I thank you for watching. I hope to keep working hard to put more videos out.
I love each one of them as they are❤❤❤❤❤
thank you so much.. Thank you for watching my friend
Thank you 🙏🏼
Enjoyed watching your process. So much to learn from. ❤
You are so welcome! thank you for watching.
Loved watching you create, you are an inspiration in how to be fearless! Thank you!
Thank you so much! I very much appreciate your comment and visiting my channel!! Please do come back Pamela!
I have just found your wonderful channel and am watching all your videos, your art is truly amazing, it's gallery and museum quality, IMO, I can see it in any Saatchi gallery, you have really mastered your tools and the genre, I'm so happy for you, is every piece a success or do u have regular 'ugly' art pieces?? Wud love to know! You are such an inspiration!! Thank u sooo much for these lovely interesting longer videos, they are soooo helpful to new artists. Thank u!! ❤
Ok,your back now.i love what your doing
I just love love your work so much and seeing the process is just wonderful. This is so my style. I wish I had your confidence but I guess that comes with time and developing your craft. I’m def finding my own style now and collage integrated to acrylic mixed media is something I just adore. Love making all kinds of marks with everything u can think of too. My black and white series of abstracts imo are my most successful to date, there’s something just beginning with black and white and then progressing to a very limited palette, maybe adding one or two more colours only that simplifies things for me. I get overwhelmed with colour choices and your black and white video just spurred me on to continue in that vein. If it’s working, why stop-right? Having said that, I will continue experimenting with other styles and colours in the side..ooh the spirals. Yes yes yes
I absolutely loved reading all that you said. I still get overwhelmed if I have not been in the studio for a bit, or have taken a break to do the business side, but getting back into painting and allowing the time to play gets me right back. Limited palettes really do help. I LOVE lots of color, but I use lots of color when I am going for the entire canvas. I do limited colors if I am going for a composition. I hope that makes sense. But my favor is the black and white and I can see why they might be YOUR most successful. As you said, keep adding in more and KEEP PLAYING and allowing.
I knew you were thinking of bubblewrap.
I like your style.
THANK YOU again friend.
Looks like fun I am enjoying the video thank you
Thanks for watching
I absolutely loved the first pair you made. Simple and gorgeous! ❤
Thank you so much! I appreciate your watching and commenting!!!!
I love your energy
thank you friend!! I hope to not lose my energy!!! Thank you for watching and supporting me.
Thank you so much for sharing the process of your paintings. It really inspired me and gave me hope for some of my paintings that I’m not happy with. I will get them out and try some of what you did. God bless you Cheryl! 🙏🏼🥰🙏🏼
you know, some of the BEST painting I have are ones I came back too. I have one right now sitting beside me i plan on tackling after I looked at Basquiat!!! Now his art is really wide, but the marks are incredible and I plan on making them MY marks.... thank you so much for commenting. God bless you too dear.
Loved everything ❤️. You gave me so many ideas. Thank you so much🎉.
You are so welcome!
Loved this Cheryl! Thanks so much, I learned a lot and will use some of this information in a variety of ways. I love intuitive painting among other styles. Am loving abstracts more and more. The more I learn about them the more I appreciate the work that goes into them. Thanks for all your hard work and time!🌺
Glad it was helpful! Abstracts are NOT easy. They are improved through practice and more practice!!! I appreciate your leaving a message, I know it takes time to stop and type one out, and it is so appreciated
Absolutely fantastic!!!
Thank you kindly!
That was great, liberating, cheers.
thank you very much.
I love that one, the 1st one didn't get to see ... it was dark for the whole video, I don't know what happened. It is gorgeous and the colors are magnificent.
It appears it is on time stamp 4:46 through 7:24. Since this is a longer video, 1 hour and 48 mins, I hope there is enough content for you to see what is happening. Love your artwork. It is so relaxing
Thank you so much 😀
Thank you Cheryl that is very helpful, I always struggle with my conscience if using media which I don’t know is light fast such as the stabilo kids pencils (which I adore) and wax crayons but like you I do use high quality acrylics.
I just always add a good fixative and a good varnish on top of my paintings when I use markers because when you do a lot of mixed media, there are going to be some that do not have the claim of archival! But I think you can do your best by protecting your top of your paintings
@@CherylWilsonArt thank you❤️
Lol! I must have missed the part about your shirt on inside out the first time I watched 😂
Wonderful video! Thank you for the great techniques you share.❤
Your message made me laugh!!! Thank you for watching the video TWICE!!! I appreciate you very much
Beautiful I love watching your work

You are welcome, I wish you well!
Cheryl this was fantastic! I absolutely LOVE long videos. I turn on your videos and then a lot of the time I just listen the first time around while I’m doing my own thing then I go back and watch after I create. Would love more of these long ones! Thank you for sharing your amazing talent with us here!!! You’re my inspiration!!! ❤
Hey there!!! I will work on that!!!! I tend to lose track of time while creating and so cut things out!!! I’ll throw in some longer ones for sure. Thanks for writing and watching!!!
Loved this video!
Glad you liked it!! thank you so much for leaving a comment and watching my videos. It means a lot to me.
Cheryl this was a fantastic video I have learned so much from watching you work I love the techniques that you so freely share I love the scgraffito 😮 and the writing backwards my own work has improved so much from listening to you
That touches my heart!!! I so much appreciate your sharing that with me!!! I keep doing videos for people just like you!!!
Thank you so much for sharing! Love your style!
You are so welcome!
it is such an inspiring video to watch, thank you for your generosity in sharing your work.
thank you so much for your comment and supporting me as an artist.
Loved this video please do more, lots of great inspiration for me to try when I get stuck on what to do next ❤😊
I’m so happy you loved this one!!! I will do more for sure!
I am still trying to figure out my own marks so found this video very interesting seeing the different tools you use to add marks. I am always scared of ruining what is already there. I just have to be brave ❤
being fearful to paint over is one of the things that stopped me from growing..... there might be some painting you honestly regret, but what you learn in the long run is incredible. Most of mine that I painted over to keep improving turned out much better. Practice is what helped me
Thank you so much for sharing your immense talent! Wow, it always amazes me how talented artists can make it look SO easy. I'm about to begin my journey into abstract... coming from a VERY limited artistic background.
Thank you! I wish you much success!! My wish for you is that you enjoy the process and let your inner soul explore!
@@CherylWilsonArt Thank you for your words of encouragement. This video is both mezmerizing and emotional. I find myself gasping at times thinking "Oh no, what did she do ?" And then another few moments later thinging "Ahh, she turned it back to beautiful!"
Great video -- I watched the entire time! Find that I do the same thing and I like those small paintings for the practice. I am constantly reworking a painting for something that will appeal to me and the experience is valuable.
And there is something about holding them in my hands to revisit them!!! So inspiring.
Loved watching this, thanks for sharing it :)
You are so welcome! THANK YOU for supporting me and watching. I hope to continue to grow in my content. Take care Rachel
I love your work and the amount of mixed media you use. Please can you tell me if you consider how light-fast your finished paintings are if you plan to sell? I worry that colours may fade over time.
I sell most of my work, so I only use higher quality paints in my paintings. I use mainly Golden. I will use other paints to add to the color, but will use professional grade. Golden actually has a lightfastness marking on their tubes. I also varnish my work when I sell it with a high quality varnish which helps. Watercolors, tempera paints will fade more than acrylics. Also bright colors will fade over time more. I have not had any issues with this area. I hope this helps.
So happy I found your channel! I love your process and style. Thank you for sharing. What kind of acrylic paint do you use? I used to work with oil and cold wax but had to stop due to the fumes. So I'm experimenting with acrylic now and tying to find the best paint and mediums that will allow me to scrap back layers to see the history underneath. Do you use mediums? What do you suggest? Thanks so much. Blessings to you!
Thank you so much! I mainly use Golden Products. I will use Lukas and other higher quality. The lower quality seem to be dull and rubbery, but are good for you if you are just playing!! I needed a color I did not have and could not mix and used an older tube of Micheals and it was so dull when dried. I used a nice Gloss to help brighten the painting in the end and it worked great. I use MANY texturing products like modeling paste, glass beads, crackle paste, etc. I hope this helps get you started.
@@CherylWilsonArt thank you so much for your reply. This helps very much!
Love your art and your content. Very helpful and inspiring. I am an abstract artist in the wood category. I am just starting out with painting. Question. I notice you have a cup full of brushes in water that look lie they just stay that way. Do you just leave them like that? I see other artists doing this also. My mom was a phenomenal painter (realistic) and she was super picky about her paint brushes. Maybe I need to let that go !?!
I am not good to my brushes, but I do not have really expensive ones. I will clean them out each night .... I rinse and dry them. Many realistic do oils which I can see why they clean them quickly. If you like them to look clean and pretty, it is so ok to clean them often... But if you are messy like me, I do not clean them up until perhaps then end of the night!!! Sometime there are so many layers on my brushes!!! I actually love them as much as a clean brush.
Maybe some gold leaf on the turquoise one, near the end.
Wicked video -- where do you get those teeny tiny brayers? never mind, I'll find one . . . ty! 😀
Hello! thank you so much. I show my tools in my Amazon store for your convenience. I show several sizes of those brayers too. It is in my description below but I will add it here. www.amazon.com/shop/influencer-86910b03?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_aipsfshop_aipsfinfluencer-86910b03_YTVR3Q1F458Z62B3T8VP you can of course purchase them anywhere, I only put my tools there for help to others to see and find them if they want.
@CherylWilson these are great!! What paper would you advise if I wanted to keep these and frame/sell?
any type really. I used canson in these, watercolor or mixed media. If you want, you can spray them with a light varnish to finish them off. I love mat, but there is satin and gloss too. That helps seal in any marks. You can also do a fixative first before the varnish.
Thank you so much for sharing this! I love all the different mark making tools you used and all the techniques. Beautiful paintings! Do you gesso your paper first?
Thank you so much! I might do an update of my mark making tools. I did one over a year ago. I do not normally gesso my paper first as I LOVE the paint to soak into the watercolor paper. You certainly can, I just normally do not. It depends on your outcome desire. I hope that helps.
@@CherylWilsonArt thanks so much!
Video missing from @4:43 - 7:24 have you considered reloading it as a one off and link it to this description vide (here)?😊
hum, i had not thought about that!! THANKS. It is my most watched video and I hated to delete it. UA-cam said I had a music violation (pre paying for music) and it not only took away the song, but the visual. I will do that. THANK YOU for caring and helping me!!
I've watched several of your videos, and I see you use the small brayer for moving paint quite often. Is this a soft brayer or a hard brayer (and would it make a difference for the way you use it)?
I use both in my art… for the way I use them, spreading paint it does not matter for me. They do spread paint slightly differently and layering is a bit easier with the soft one, hope this helps
Hello . I admire your work very much. I am just starting out and i noticed that you got a lot of use from a hand tool that resembled a disposable razor blade. Im not sure how else to describe it. What is it called? Thank you very much.
I am sure you are talking about the Brayer I am using. There are MANY sized of this tool and it is used to spread paint or flatten the paint, which i love to do. There are hard brayers and soft ones the one I used here is the hard brayer. Here is a link to my Amazon store if you want to see what they look like. www.amazon.com/shop/influencer-86910b03/list/E61J0PUUR4I0?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_aipsflist_aipsfinfluencer-86910b03_AGQXH2QZAEZ3V2K5YG2R You can get them at your local art supply store, but this link will allow you to see what they are called. I hope this helps
Thank you so much for sharing. Wondering the liquid white (that is very drippy) you use is it a mix of fluid white and water or actual high flow white?
I use Golden High Flow. I do not mix with water. I will spray with water at times to encourage dripping once on the canvas.
Thanks for the information I appreciate your sharing.
I’m sorry if I missed this but can you tell me what type of paper you are using? Do you gesso it first?
I never gesso my paper, but you certainly can to see how it reacts for you. It is a preference thing. I use in al most all my artwork the Canson XL or stratmore Mixed media ..... I do not use the cotton paper unless it is strictly for watercolor mainly. Canson has nice watercolor paper that is NOT cotton and nice mixed media. Both are great for how I paint.
What lb watercolor paper are you using? Is it 300lb to resist major buckling? Or do you pre-dampen and stretch your papers? Your paper looks like it lays so flat! I use Arches 140lb but also got a block of the 300 to try. I don’t have the patience for pre-stretching most days but I’m starting to think I need to get over that and start trying it. The buckling causes disappointment with my final pieces sometimes.
I do not use 300lb as a normal standard. I use a lot of 140lb. I do not pre dampen or stretch .... I have Arches and some other expensive papers, but to be honest, I use canson 140lb and stratmore papers. I do use a lot of high flows in my work and I just do not have the buckle. Perhaps water color artists have more of an issue and my acrylics are heavier. I also use a hair dryer to dry my work often, I have a smaller one beside my art table. I also will flatten my works once they dry over night with heavy books and waxed paper on top to keep flattened. I just do not have issues with buckling in my paintings.... I WILL finished them with a fine archival spray or even a gel medium then a spray and use only the highest quality paints. In mixed media, I will go back and forth with different types of paint. I hope this helps, if not please reach out with further questions. I am sure other artist have other opinions, but this is what I find works for me, my friend!!!
@@CherylWilsonArt Thank you!! I do have some of the high flows to work with. Trying to slowly add in more colors to my collection. They’re all so beautiful.. but my wallet cries a little! 🥲 I don’t think I have ever come across an artist that I feel super connected with until I saw your videos. I get a kindred spirits feeling every time I watch them. ☺️ And I’m just so grateful that you share so openly. I have struggled in the past accepting the kind of artist I am (often feeling like I’m not a true artist because I didn’t have traditional fine arts training). But your videos always make me feel comforted that the kind of artist I am is absolutely OKAY. ♥️ Thank you for knowledge and gracing us all with your beautiful art!
@@foeofmediocrity say three times outloud.... "I AM AN ARTIST!!" we all bring a different style to the world. Look at Basquist!! His art is different and I love his work but many hate it. You are already an artist. My daughter in law took art in school and she is incredible but stopped painting for YEARS as her college teacher told her she had no talent. SHE IS THE REASON I felt the confidence to start painting when I first met her. I have learned a lot for those trained formally, but many tell me they need to get out of the box they were taught to paint in and I have actually mentored several of them privately .... mainly to teach them it is ok to paint what is in their heart and not was is "acceptable" ..... OH DEAR, i could go on for hours about this, but please, to keep moving forward, look in the mirror and tell yourself you are an artist and then paint your heart out what you feel within.... unconditionally, and take risks.... well, that is what I did and I have not looked back. Thank you for your kind words.... oh yeah, if you mix in some satin glaze into your regular paints, you will get an almost golden high flow paint!!! Love you and take care.
@@CherylWilsonArt It means a lot that you took the time to write this to me! I went to college to major in graphic design and unfortunately had to withdraw due to medical reasons. So I never finished my degree and never got to touch an elective fine art class. Sometimes I wonder if I was better off because of the very reason you mentioned above with your daughter in law. The first time I saw a Basquist piece I absolutely loved them! In one of your videos you referred to yourself as a messy abstract painter I believe these were your exact words and I knew exactly what you meant! I relate! I love to paint intuitively.. I love to create intuitively in general. Even with my digital work. I would get in to such a trance state doing it that when I finished I sometimes couldn’t remember what I did to arrive there! I was never one to research art history.. in fact.. I still don’t. Our past artists are important to the forward movement of art and where I appreciate some artists more than others and of course know popular painters etc, I admit if you show me a more obscure work I will most likely not be sure who created it. I always felt that made me a fraud of an artist.. if that makes sense. But I have come to understand that isn’t true. It took me some time. I just realize now..I like the freedom to create my own things without being felt boxed in by categories or the pressure of needing to know every painter of the past in order to be “legit”. I could probably sit and talk to you for hours about all of it! Your daughter in law must be so thrilled to have you! I imagine a painting collaboration between the two of you would be incredible! THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart! For your encouraging words and the extra tip! Will have to invest in some satin glaze! Love you back! Have a wonderful weekend!
@@foeofmediocrity I love your words... "I love to paint intuitively" I so agree that you do not need to know all the past artist's out there to be
a "legit" artist. I have my chosen ones I love to sit on a rainy day and look at, like Joan Mitchell and Cy Twombly but when I started painting, it was when people said a piece of my art looked like .... say Joan, that I looked her up!!! I painted without direction and still do. My training online have been to understand better value in abstracts and the differences in shapes.... both concepts I am told are not taught in colleges. My daughter in law's art is a bit different than mine as she does more watercolors, more abstract realism and currently (due to her mother passing too young) spiritual paintings, but we do have our cross over styles. We are learning from each other..... Keep being inspired by your soul and it seems to be leading you in the right path!!!!
Do you ever worry that the coffee will damage the paper?
No. People have been painting with coffees and teas for years. And using natural elements to stain the paper. so I didn’t worry. there are a lot of ways to seal the paper with really good fixatives and varnished too! Thank you so much for watching asking the question
Is that water color paper you are using?
Yes, I use a lot of Canson watercolor paper. I40 pound. I just flatten with books if they tend to curl at all.
What would be the difference in using acrylic ink rather than the high flow acrylic? Have you ever tried it?
there is a difference in one is an ink and one is acrylic. The flow is about the same. I mainly use acrylics but have used inks. Do you have experience in inks?
How would anyone convert such pieces into canvas painting?
while working with canvas is slightly different, so many of the same concepts can be done on canvas. You might start on small canvases first , then migrate larger. If you go larger, increase the size of your brushes to match the size of the strokes. in other words, the larger canvas, the larger the tools!!! I hope this helps.
@@CherylWilsonArt Thank you so much
