Lovely genuine guy. My apprentice, Mark, wife was the nanny to his kids. Mark and she wanted to buy a house, but needed Bob to say she was earning more than she was to get the mortgage they needed, he said he would do that. A few weeks later, he gave her a letter to give to the lender, and it said she was earning more than she needed it say. She pointed that out, and Bob said, you are actually earning that from now on. What a gent
Another time, my apprentice (mechanic) Mark, arrived at Bobs house late Saturday night after a hard days spanering, still in his overalls. Marks wife was Bobs kids nanny, and had a room at the top of the house so she could stay over if needed, and there was a party that night, so she’d agreed to stay over to watch the kids, Mark was going to stay as well. Anyway, he arrives, and Bob insists on introducing Mark to some very big movies names, still in his overalls. He goes up to the room, showers and changes, and is just settling down to a beer and pizza, there’s a knock at the door, it’s Bob with a bottle of champagne. He asks if he can stay there for the evening as he really can’t deal with the movie crowd!

I think it was in the same interview where he was asked about 'selling out' and doing adverts for British Gas.
Bob replied he had thousands of reasons for doing the ads - and each one of them had a picture of the queen on the back.

Although he was British, I had a hard time hearing his accent because the first movie I watched A LOT was Roger Rabbit (I was an enticed 2 year old for Jessica Rabbit), and Bob nailed the role as Eddie so much that I always hear him as such. RIP Bob.

Growing up I knew him as Eddie Valiant and Mario Mario, both of whom had American accents. Didn't realize he was British until years later. I saw him as Mr. Smee in Hook and just assumed his British accent was fake there lol
I'm English and I always watch American films with the English subtitles on as I don't understand hardly a word spoken, especially today with all their vibrating mumbling voices which destroy my speakers.

I was pretty surprised to learn Bob Hoskins was actually British. He put on such a convincing American accent as Eddie Valiant.

What a lovely man. Saw him on the lot of Columbia, reading what looked like a script on a bench, under a tree. One of my regrets is not going up to him and telling him how I adored his work.
You respected his privacy, no regrets about that.

My favourite Bob Hoskins movies are The Long Good Friday, Mona Lisa, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and The Super Mario Bros.
he is probably my top fav. I have a genuinely hard time choosing one but his presence in my childhood with roger rabbit, hook, and many others just sold me instantly

First time I remember seeing him was in the educational tv show ''On the Move,'' where his [ adult ] character was learning to read.
I couldn’t help thinking of Stephen Graham when watching this. He also has a strong accent but can do American really well and is charismatic and versatile as an actor!

@@skintslots Aye I really like him too. The acting he was doing on 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit?' was absolutely revolutionary. It doesn't get talked about much but Bob really showed that he was the real deal in that production.

A lot of Brits can do American accent good. On the other hand, a lot of Americans can’t do British accent.

@@rabit818 There's still no such thing as a British accent, it's an English accent that has something called regional dialects depending on where in England you are born.....British is just a term of political identification and Bob hoskins was as English as they come.

@@rabit818 Well sorry but it's an inaccurate term, it's as inaccurate as me calling anyone from Canada down to Argentina American.....someone is British if they come from a country that isn't England however the Irish, Welsh and the Scottish all have very unique cultures they fiercely represent and do not call themselves british....the only meaning being british has is as a political identity label for the government and those who immigrate here.....The east end accent of the Cockney is Currently the accepted definition as to what an English accent would be with received pronunciation from the Queen being the Posh example that people associate with red coats, bearskin hats and Victorian London......Next time this comes up you're going to really impress people with your cultural know how. 😉

I think Bob Hoskins would have made a more nuanced and interesting Al Capone. DeNiro's Capone is kind of cartoonish and too "DeNiro" and lacking depth.
