I have had 1 at a time. My last husky and I were inseparable. He would ignore other dogs and come play with me. He was by far the best friend I ever EVER had. One evening he picked his bowl up, already filled with wild caught Alaskan salmon and vegetables, and brought it to me. Sat it by my side and ate with me in the living room. We ate 3 times a day, and we ate side by side from that point on. I never in my life loved anything more than I loved him. When he was a puppy I had to fight 2 Sheppard off with my hands before they got to him. After that I ended up carrying a gun and 100 rounds of ammo. Too many people with pit bulls, rottweilers, mastiff, running off leash looking for fights. I ignored all questionable areas and thank God never even had to think about it. I loved that dog more than anything. With endless love, empathy, patience, making things fun for them, and all the time devoted to them. They become like little kids, shockingly smart, amazingly fast learning, and intune with the family. They are the best breed for me. They are not fighters, watchdogs, or guardogs. With endless love and empathy they are the best friend you will ever have. Just remember you both are learning how to communicate with eachother though they will learn the person. The people never try to learn them, they are also learning your body language. Never yell, never raise a violent hand, never become the "master" mentality. Always treat them like a child even when they do wrong. It is a life with feelings, excitement, fears, and if You prove to them your worth it a love that will never even sway no matter what the future holds. They got your back till death. By being the boss you limit the Huskies potential. Be the friend, let them choose what path to take, go to different safe parks, keep their mi.d working. The only bad they shed like crazy but the birds will flock to your yard for the fur. Your yard will be filled with songs. They are energetic, you better like to play with them and be gentle. They are like kids, don't need to overpower them for alpha spot. Not sure where that came from and why it's so popular. It's wrong, just purely and genuinely love them. They will know and when they see it's true they will return it 10 fold.
I agree with having more than one. No husky should be alone! We experienced a foster husky who ran away all the time until we got another one. They played constantly and made excellent trekking companions.
I have had 1. She has passed away for 3 years already. I miss her so much. What I know from having her, Siberian Husky is a funny breed. They are insanely clever which really stirring my nerve if you onow what I mean😂😂😂
John Travis They can be, that’s for sure. But, most of the mischief ours gets up to is harmless and hysterical, not to mention, our fault. The biggest problem we’re having with her (she’s 14 months old and medium high energy) is that she’s hunting and eating small animals on our property almost everyday. We have a house full of animals, from our three pups to exotic reptiles and tortoises, so obviously we’re animals lovers. When she brings one of her “kills” to the back door as a “gift”, it’s still quite unnerving for my daughter and me. My husband handles it much better. We understand that she does this as an act of love and approval seeking, but it’s a mess of a situation. Have you dealt with this particular issue? Have a great weekend! P.S. Just so you know, we don’t love her any less for acting on her carnivorous instincts. She’s an amazing, intelligent gorgeous pure white, otherwise sweet as can be, and soulful pup. :)
Yes. Usually harmless and almost always hilarious. I have a middle-aged male here that came from a kill shelter in 2011 who I refer to as my clown prince. I've seen the notorious prey drive a couple times, but not to excess....most recently just this week, as it happens. My youngest and most recent acquisition killed a young Possum and "presented" it to me at the door around daylight. With cats, he's curious, but mostly detached. My oldest one caught and killed a squirrel that got into a panic at the sight of me and jumped the fence several years ago. He actually caught the unfortunate little guy on the fly. The lack of critter kills may be mostly due to the fenced yard giving them limited access, but a girl that we lost back in 2010 who I called "My Little Thief of Hearts" actually once guarded two baby rabbits and protected them from the others by encircling them with her front legs and covering them with her neck and head...so the killer instinct isn't always a hard, fast rule. At the end of the day, it's just a Husky acting like a Husky. Good luck.
Been raising them for 10 yrs now... the lady in the vid knows what she’s talking about....absolute characters....I thought the shaving thing was a myth so I shave my adult male and female... female grew back fine with guard hairs and full undercoat came back too.... my male came back full undercoat but the guard hairs are only quarter inch long. But mine are indoor .... would of never done that if they were raised outdoors. So there is truth to what she said about never shaving... can be a risk.
Siberian is the proper nickname. A Husky is a type of dog, and there are a whole bunch of them, some with Husky in their name, like the Alaskan, Labrador, Sakhalin, Mackenzie River, and of course, the Siberian, and others without it, such as the Alaskan Malamute, Akita, Samoyed, Canadian Eskimo, and others. But you're right, many people call them Huskies. Perhaps most.
Steve Stone Is she aggressive with others dogs? Or is she just playing? Husky are a bit problematic with small animals... But you need to be the alpha! Show her who is in the command. She need to learn how is the correct behavior with others animals... You need to be strong but you need to enforce the good behavior
My Husky Sage, is good with small dogs at Home with my Grandmothers Little dogs even the Cat that took some work he will just try and play with the Small Animals he Knows.. how ever on walks if he sees a Lose small dog or even one on a Leash he will get so excited he will Jump on his Hind legs Like a Kangaroo lol Honestly I can not tell if he wants to play or Eat it ether way I have been working on him it understandably make the people walking their small dogs Nervous..
Siberian Huskies have a high prey drive, and not just towards small animals. Mine would go after goats, sheep, buffaloes and horses. I trained him not to go after squirrels, cats, and smaller dogs, but how often does one have the opportunity to work with buffaloes and farm animals in the city? Basically, you have to teach your dog impulse control. That's easier said than done. It takes a lot of time working with your dog, and it's not just about prey drive. Essentially, your dog needs to look at you to find out if he's allowed to do something or not. Everything you do with your dog has to be built around your dog waiting for you to give him the go ahead. Make him wait after you put down his food bowl, not just staring at the food bowl, but at you. Before going out the door, before releasing him to play, etc. Then work with your dog with smaller dogs around, getting him to focus on you, not the other dogs. A side benefit of this is that your dog learns to relax, and the presence of smaller dogs running around won't get him all excited. If your dog is excited, then you must wait until your dog is relaxed before releasing him (or her). Of course, you must also learn not to make your dog excitable. Like, don't greet your dog with a high-pitched voice when you get home, don't keep repeating "you wanna go to the park?" before you take your dog out. If you are taking him out, go out only after your dog has relaxed. Walking out the door with an excited dog just sets the stage for the rest of the walk. That's it in a nutshell. Just remember one thing. The one doing the learning here is you, not your dog. Your dog is fully capable of learning. But you may have quite a way to go in teaching.

Do you know what your dog is mixed with? Our old female Husky mix used to herd other dogs at the dog park.
