Since you made this video they have improved quite a bit. They are extremely Sharp, have a good 90° spine and for the price I would prefer a nice wood handled knife with a leather sheet compared to a plastic Mora just to keep it Woody.
Sorry to hear your news Rob, as Pete said below it doesn't get any easier, but you do learn to live with it, i lost my dad back in 2014 and i still have many moments, including the lump in my throat as i type this, all i can say is take your time, do what you want to do and if you need time take it regardless of anyone says, the faithful subscribers understand and will still be here when you are ready to get back at it.

Just got BPS carbon steel knife, but Adventurer model has Ferro rod holder, walnut handle on Ferro rod, and 90° sharp spine. For $40, pretty darn good Mora alternative. I opted to take mine apart, cold blue the blade, light sand and dark stain the handles, mink oil the sheath. I've bought knives for 55 years, this is second knife that I didn't feel need to sharpen blade on arrival (excluding the custom knives you made for me). Peace
I recently bought a 3.2 mm thick BPS B1 1066 carbon steel knife on Amazon for 28.99 it waa by far the sharpest knife i have ever bought. The grind was perfect, and the spine was fairly sharp. The handle needed some light sanding and one more coat of Danish oil. The knife sheath needed a few coats of obenauf's leather treatment to make it waterproof and it's been great so far👍. For 28.99 iit can't be beat !
I bought one of these knives directly from bps £35 took 4 weeks to arrive 2.8mm thick and razor sharp with a square spine that strikes ferro rod well ....not a woodlore but a great knife for the money

Hello from Canada. First let me say that I love that you didn't look into where the knife was made prior to your review. Unfortunately many look at an item's place of origin and that alone makes up their mind. Shame really as there are good items and bad items produced everywhere. I just received this knife a few days ago and have only used it around the yard for now but I'm happy with it so far. I believe the manufacturer must have watched your review (lol) because my knife arrived hair shaving sharp, the spine had been ground to where it produces fantastic sparks and the blade geometry is even. The only thing I had to do was tighten the bolts and sand the handle for about twenty seconds per side to smooth out a couple of rough patches. Excellent and fair review thank you and my sincerest condolences on the passing of your father.
I have and like a few BPS knives all 1066. That is their strength and weakness. Easy to sharpen and tough steel but they do need a little more sharpening than 1095.

I give you credit on the bow drill fires when you get them. I can never get it to go. This month I've built 3 rigs from three different woods dried out in front of a fire daily.... Tons of smoke but Can't get an ember. Tons of powder.. almost black. All I can say is respect given on all your efforts. Great video. My best to you and your family. Stay healthy brother
Never rely on friction firelighting! I tried every trick in my book on that set apart from taking it home and drying it out on the radiator, I will be making your knife next week buddy.

I got one of these. For the money i thought it was ok. As you say the grids was not even. The spine was not 90 and the fit and finish was not amazing. However with a little work it’s turned out to be a good little knife. I fitted 2 mm scales to give the handle a bit more shape. It’s a nice knife for a starter in wood handle knifes for someone. Still love my woodlore
I have had good results, storing my bow drill sets, in a plastic bag, with a dessicant sachet, that you can get from many sources, to keep the air dry inside. It worked for me, would be interesting to know if anyone else ever uses dessicants. I have also used them to keep tinder dry etc. It seemed a shame to throw them away, so i tried it on such things and it has been quite successful, might be worth a try when stored in bags or kits etc Love your channel and the practical demos

Hi Rob, Sorry to hear the sad news about your father. My deepest sympathies to you and your family and having lost my father over twenty years ago all I can say is that time does ease the pain.
This just proves it makes no difference what kind of knife you bring into the woods. Just make sure you bring RobEvans along with you. He's got axes and saws and pots and hot water bottles and bow-drill sets and pockets full of knives and sharpening stones, and a story or two.....
Tbf, half the Mora Companions and Classics I got weren't perfectly straight out of the box either. Usually just around where the belly start they have a slight warp to the right.
I have several different BPS knives along with several Moras, ESEE, Ontario, Cold Steel, Joker, Jeo-Tec, and various, what I consider high quality China-made knives, such as Eafengrow and Komwero. For the money BPS knives are hard to beat, Mora being the exception. I would not hesitate to recommend BPS knives. Yes, they are on the thin side, but have held up to everything I would expect from a good quality bushcraft knife. Thanks for the video and an honest opinion. Don't be too discouraged by the bow drill failure though, It is not an easy way to make fire, I have failed on many occasions myself using this method!

Oh man - I was going to make a quip about you being the king of lost causes - going back to your rubber chopping block and then the fireproof bow-drill set! Loosing your Dad is a difficult thing to go through, it doesn't get any easier - but you do learn to live with it. Don't worry about us waiting to poke fun at you - take all the time you need to be with your family and friends.
I just stumbled upon your channel...nice review, I subscribed. I have the BPS Adventurer and love it, sharp as hell spine, came reasonably sharp and the sheath is worth the price of the whole rig. With just a little effort it took a highly refined edge and is now razor sharp. The Adventurer is a carbon steel, which I prefer. I just ordered the knife you are reviewing...we all need knives....many knives.
Yes, I'm also very sorry to hear about your dad, Rob; a pain I know all too well, for me it's now been over ten years. When you said "I'm going to make a new bow," for a split second I actually thought you were going to do some archery. Twpsyn!

Hello Rob, I'm a new subscriber playing catch up on some of your older videos. I enjoy your content, so please keep it coming. During the last year or so, I've become a little familiar with BPS knives, in fact I have three at this point. The first I purchased was the HK5, which has served me well for the entire time I've had it; it arrived razor sharp and is carbon steel. Soon after , their B1 Bushcraft knife, which look a lot like the knife you review here, followed me home as well. It too arrived sharper than anything else I've received in ages, and is made of a 1066 carbon steel. The spine of both knives was crazy sharp, so much so that my ferro rods are afraid of these blades. I'm curious as to what you actually reviewed, I mean which model. Now neither knife is my thickest in the blade department, the B1 being 3mm thick. I have not tried to split anything quite as large as you have, but on some 2 plus inch material both 3mm blades performed quite well. Perhaps this review showed BPS what to correct, but I'm happy with all of mine. I did a fair bit or carving, simple things like tent stakes, pack hangers, and a bunch of toggles; all the knifes are just as sharp as when they arrived. Cheers from across the pond, SoCal to be exact. Just an afterthought, since you like blades that are not so tall in height, look at the BPS BS1FTS Bushcraft knife; also 1066 carbon steel full tang. This is my latest acquisition and though a thinner blades is a perfect slicer and great carving knife. Amazon is faster delivery and I've had great luck with them, factory direct takes a couple of months. Overall length - 200 mm (7.87 inches) Blade length - 93 mm (3.66 inches) Handle length - 105 mm (4.13 inches) Blade height - 18mm (.75 inches) Blade thickness - 2 mm (0.078 inches) Weight - 60 grams (2.11 oz.)
The model I reviewed was only 2mm thick, a few people have said that they might have fixed the issues on the knives after my video came out....who knows. Thanks for joining us 👍
Sorry to hear about your father Rob. My condolences. As for cheap(er) range of knives, they can disappoint, but also surprise as well. Recently I bought 2 of them. First is produced by BACHO, and basically it is Mora Companion clone (orange version with stainless steel). Surprisingly, came with Scandi grind. Not bad, but rat-tail tang, so I don't expect much of an longevity with any serious usage. Second came from some "CRIVIT". Surprisingly full tang knife, wooden scales, stainless steel, and when I've sharpened it to Scandi, it was not half bad. Handle is a bit narrow for my hand, but that can be solved. Sheet is ... well, sh1t. But I don't really expect much from 6€ knife anyway. In any case, no need to rush with videos if you don't have much of a will for them now. Take your time, and we'll be here whenever you post some fine new stuff. ;-)
That Bahco probably is just a rebranded Mora Clipper (predecessor of the Companion) and manufactured by Mora Of Sweden instead of a clone. Crivit is Lidl's home brand so it's probably manufactured somewhere in China.

Lol that knife sold out on Amazon. I had it on check out but was trying to decide if i should of gotten it than it went away it was on sale for $23..guess ill have to wait😑..So ill be playing with my heavy modify Gerber Strongarm which i grinded down its false edge to a more drop point look. changed it grind to a convex i guess its a saber-vex now. Cuts better than ever very sharp batons great and makes featherstick from hardwood. Good video☺. And Sorry about your Great lost.

Also you make the best feather sticks I’ve ever seen and I’ve tried practicing after seeing u make yours. Very sorry to read that your father passed away mate. Difficult at any point but at this time with the current situation my heart goes out to you. Keep going to your lovely little spot in the woods and staring at fire or making your videos. I am sure it will help and I for one always look forward to watching them and feel like I’m there. I was taught different with a bow drill. I always put stuff by the v cut so the ember falls on dry ignition material. I saw it making smoke so it was plenty hot enough. But honestly I hate bow drills if it wasn't for boy scouts making us do it over and over. I would never have figured it out. I would choose any other method before using a bow drill to much energy wasted in my opinion. I mean it's good to know the theory but really with matches, lighters, ferro rods, magnifying glass, chemicals, batteries I can't see fire ever being hard to make. Depending on environment and a bow drill in the rain is horrible. But really all you was miss was the what we used to call mouse nest. I believe it would have lit.

You've pretty much verified what I've heard others say about it. I've heard it was a good cutter/carver, not the best batonner, but it will do small kindling. Not sure what the steel is or how it will hold an edge. At least with Mora we know it's 12C27 which is a decent enough budget steel, but BPS doesn't say what it is. For the money, it would make an ok starter or back up blade I suppose, but I think I'd prefer a Mora. The Mora is less money, depending on which model you buy, and it's probably a sturdier knife despite not having a full tang.. The only advantage the BPS has over Mora is the full tang and wood handle, and a better looking sheath, although the Mora sheath is likely much more durable. I guess it boils down to personal preferences. I'm sorry to hear about your Dad. I hope you and your family are dealing with the loss as well as can be expected. The loss of a close family member can be tough. I know only to well. Both of my parents are gone. Peace be with you, and may God take your Dad under his wing.

The boots are Danner hunting boots , I think the model is GTX Raptor but I'm not sure, they are excellent, Dave Cantabury wore a pair for years and did a video on them.
THEY SELL THE MILITARY ONES IN GREECE, THEY COST 370€, VERY EXPENSIVE, BUT, THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT THERE ARE CROSSES UNDERNEATH AND I DON' T STEP ON THE CROSSES. IT IS MY WAY OF BELIEVING. CHEERS ANYWAY.
U must have gotten a lemon because that knife company is famous for extremely sharp with a perfected Scandinavian grind and all seven of my knives from that company work great with ferro rods very strange
👌Couldn't agree more. I am currently looking at a Real Steel Bushcraft Zenith Scandi. 14C28N 4.5mm thick 11cm blade. Nice 90 spine. About half the price of a Garberg here in RSA 😊.

Still having troubles sharpening the 110 jaakaripuukko: I tried whetstones, cote (what we use to sharpen country tools like scythes), diamond stones, even my water grinder, strops, no fucking way! I'm using a 20 degrees angle: am I wrong? I mean: the bastard cuts paper and wood, but I can't be satisfied whit the way it cuts, it is rough even after the strop. I'm not new to sharpening: my other knives do work and I almost have no more hair on my left forearm :D. Any suggestions? The bigger brother is a piece of cake, but the 110 is making me mad! 26:24 .. using a knife to split a log makes you appreciate the axe and that's why you have to do it from time to time ... we humans remember bad experiences much longer and in more detail, than we remember good experiences ... why? good experiences won't kill you, thus remembering what was bad and should be avoided is a survival skill.
I mainly use DMT stones and finish with a ceramic stone and a home made strop and paste. I recently purchased a Ken Onion worksharp with grinder attachment for convex grinds and secondary bevels, I haven't used it enough to form a final opinion but so far so good. I sometimes use micromesh abrasive strops on my Scandi grinds aswel.
I'm new viewer and don't know anything about bushcraft, that's why I'm watching. I also bought this knife to support this shop since I saw that this company supplies the Ukrainian soldiers with knives. The current model has 1066 steel. 59-60 HRC My question is, if you're in the woods and you find your knife is dull, wouldn't you sharpen it? I know you are testing the knife for your friend, but aren't you testing it to see how the knife performs in actual use? I love what you're doing and I am learning a lot from this video and I am only halfway through it. It just didn't make sense watching you use a knife that was dull. You seem like a no nonsense common sense guy. I don't think you would work with a knife if it was giving you this much problems, would would simply sharpen it to make the job easier. Just my opinion. It didn't seem like you were showing the knifes real potential, which is a shame for me since I came here to see what kind of knife I bought. I won't return it, even if you say it's a bad knife, because I bought it to support the company. I have a hinderer and a Randall knife for the woods. Most people test a knife "out of the box" it really should arrive sharp enough to use, other people have reviewed this knife and found it really sharp out of the box. Thanks for watching 👍
Where do I begin? First of all, The BPS B1 is not nor advertised as a Stainless steel knife, It is a High Carbon Steel 1066. Second , Its made in the Ukraine , Not China! Next , The sheath is of a higher quality than any knife its price range or even double. I personally own several of these knifes and they ALL came Razor sharp ! When you say things like " I don't know how the Scandi edge will hold up ? " You might want to find that out before doing a "Review" on You Tube, Just saying. You never started your test with a sharpness test ... nor did you test it again at the end. Every knife has its limitations ( this one as well ) Their is nothing wrong with not liking a knife , But be fair on your reviews . It kinda felt like you had already made up your mind about the B1 prior to testing it out.

The really important thing with the BPS scales is they are removable and therefore replaceable

A little bit of ordinary powdered salt in a cloth bag perfectly removes excess moisture in a closed volume.

Usually just around where the belly start they have a slight warp to the right.

I have several different BPS knives along with several Moras, ESEE, Ontario, Cold Steel, Joker, Jeo-Tec, and various, what I consider high quality China-made knives, such as Eafengrow and Komwero. For the money BPS knives are hard to beat, Mora being the exception. I would not hesitate to recommend BPS knives. Yes, they are on the thin side, but have held up to everything I would expect from a good quality bushcraft knife. Thanks for the video and an honest opinion. Don't be too discouraged by the bow drill failure though, It is not an easy way to make fire, I have failed on many occasions myself using this method!

Oh man - I was going to make a quip about you being the king of lost causes - going back to your rubber chopping block and then the fireproof bow-drill set! Loosing your Dad is a difficult thing to go through, it doesn't get any easier - but you do learn to live with it. Don't worry about us waiting to poke fun at you - take all the time you need to be with your family and friends.

I just stumbled upon your channel...nice review, I subscribed. I have the BPS Adventurer and love it, sharp as hell spine, came reasonably sharp and the sheath is worth the price of the whole rig. With just a little effort it took a highly refined edge and is now razor sharp. The Adventurer is a carbon steel, which I prefer. I just ordered the knife you are reviewing...we all need knives....many knives.
These BPS are a real bargain.

Hello Rob, I'm a new subscriber playing catch up on some of your older videos. I enjoy your content, so please keep it coming. During the last year or so, I've become a little familiar with BPS knives, in fact I have three at this point. The first I purchased was the HK5, which has served me well for the entire time I've had it; it arrived razor sharp and is carbon steel. Soon after , their B1 Bushcraft knife, which look a lot like the knife you review here, followed me home as well. It too arrived sharper than anything else I've received in ages, and is made of a 1066 carbon steel. The spine of both knives was crazy sharp, so much so that my ferro rods are afraid of these blades. I'm curious as to what you actually reviewed, I mean which model. Now neither knife is my thickest in the blade department, the B1 being 3mm thick. I have not tried to split anything quite as large as you have, but on some 2 plus inch material both 3mm blades performed quite well. Perhaps this review showed BPS what to correct, but I'm happy with all of mine. I did a fair bit or carving, simple things like tent stakes, pack hangers, and a bunch of toggles; all the knifes are just as sharp as when they arrived. Cheers from across the pond, SoCal to be exact.
Just an afterthought, since you like blades that are not so tall in height, look at the BPS BS1FTS Bushcraft knife; also 1066 carbon steel full tang. This is my latest acquisition and though a thinner blades is a perfect slicer and great carving knife. Amazon is faster delivery and I've had great luck with them, factory direct takes a couple of months.

Handle length - 105 mm (4.13 inches)
Blade height - 18mm (.75 inches)
Blade thickness - 2 mm (0.078 inches)
Weight - 60 grams (2.11 oz.)
The model I reviewed was only 2mm thick, a few people have said that they might have fixed the issues on the knives after my video came out....who knows.

As for cheap(er) range of knives, they can disappoint, but also surprise as well. Recently I bought 2 of them.
First is produced by BACHO, and basically it is Mora Companion clone (orange version with stainless steel). Surprisingly, came with Scandi grind. Not bad, but rat-tail tang, so I don't expect much of an longevity with any serious usage.
Second came from some "CRIVIT". Surprisingly full tang knife, wooden scales, stainless steel, and when I've sharpened it to Scandi, it was not half bad. Handle is a bit narrow for my hand, but that can be solved. Sheet is ... well, sh1t. But I don't really expect much from 6€ knife anyway.
In any case, no need to rush with videos if you don't have much of a will for them now. Take your time, and we'll be here whenever you post some fine new stuff. ;-)
I've decided that I need to get back on the horse so to speak.
That Bahco probably is just a rebranded Mora Clipper (predecessor of the Companion) and manufactured by Mora Of Sweden instead of a clone. Crivit is Lidl's home brand so it's probably manufactured somewhere in China.
@alexandervoigtmann1863 the Bahco knives are by Mora, they can be seen being produced in one of the Morakniv videos.

Lol that knife sold out on Amazon. I had it on check out but was trying to decide if i should of gotten it than it went away it was on sale for $23..guess ill have to wait😑..So ill be playing with my heavy modify Gerber Strongarm which i grinded down its false edge to a more drop point look. changed it grind to a convex i guess its a saber-vex now. Cuts better than ever very sharp batons great and makes featherstick from hardwood. Good video☺. And Sorry about your Great lost.

Found your channel thru watching Simon bloke and after seeing how beautiful your knives are I value your advice on anything to do with knives and one day I’d like to own one made by you. Also you make the best feather sticks I’ve ever seen and I’ve tried practicing after seeing u make yours. Very sorry to read that your father passed away mate. Difficult at any point but at this time with the current situation my heart goes out to you. Keep going to your lovely little spot in the woods and staring at fire or making your videos. I am sure it will help and I for one always look forward to watching them and feel like I’m there. My mate lives near Llangrannog and I managed a visit and a camp around the fire in their little bit of woods in September. Lovely.

I was taught different with a bow drill. I always put stuff by the v cut so the ember falls on dry ignition material. I saw it making smoke so it was plenty hot enough.
But honestly I hate bow drills if it wasn't for boy scouts making us do it over and over. I would never have figured it out. I would choose any other method before using a bow drill to much energy wasted in my opinion.
I mean it's good to know the theory but really with matches, lighters, ferro rods, magnifying glass, chemicals, batteries I can't see fire ever being hard to make. Depending on environment and a bow drill in the rain is horrible.
But really all you was miss was the what we used to call mouse nest. I believe it would have lit.
You got that much work done with a dull blade wow! Next ,glad to see you put your edge on it? Fairness is key. I just subbed to you channel. I know this is an older Vid. Love My BPS, Good knives for a great price.

You've pretty much verified what I've heard others say about it. I've heard it was a good cutter/carver, not the best batonner, but it will do small kindling. Not sure what the steel is or how it will hold an edge. At least with Mora we know it's 12C27 which is a decent enough budget steel, but BPS doesn't say what it is. For the money, it would make an ok starter or back up blade I suppose, but I think I'd prefer a Mora. The Mora is less money, depending on which model you buy, and it's probably a sturdier knife despite not having a full tang.. The only advantage the BPS has over Mora is the full tang and wood handle, and a better looking sheath, although the Mora sheath is likely much more durable. I guess it boils down to personal preferences.
I'm sorry to hear about your Dad. I hope you and your family are dealing with the loss as well as can be expected. The loss of a close family member can be tough. I know only to well. Both of my parents are gone. Peace be with you, and may God take your Dad under his wing.

The boots are Danner hunting boots , I think the model is GTX Raptor but I'm not sure, they are excellent, Dave Cantabury wore a pair for years and did a video on them.

U must have gotten a lemon because that knife company is famous for extremely sharp with a perfected Scandinavian grind and all seven of my knives from that company work great with ferro rods very strange
Rob, BPS knives from Ukraine. It looks like the B1S model which is 1066 carbon steel, 2.8mm thick. Cost $30 on their website.
I was told it was stainless, it does not spark with flint. And it's not 2.8mm thick, must be a different model.

That must be it, give me a Mora 510 or Robust any day.
👌Couldn't agree more. I am currently looking at a Real Steel Bushcraft Zenith Scandi. 14C28N 4.5mm thick 11cm blade. Nice 90 spine. About half the price of a Garberg here in RSA 😊.

Still having troubles sharpening the 110 jaakaripuukko: I tried whetstones, cote (what we use to sharpen country tools like scythes), diamond stones, even my water grinder, strops, no fucking way!
I'm using a 20 degrees angle: am I wrong?
I mean: the bastard cuts paper and wood, but I can't be satisfied whit the way it cuts, it is rough even after the strop.
I'm not new to sharpening: my other knives do work and I almost have no more hair on my left forearm :D.
Any suggestions?

Just found your channel. Very good. What types of stones and strop did you use to improve the sharpness please?
I mainly use DMT stones and finish with a ceramic stone and a home made strop and paste.
I recently purchased a Ken Onion worksharp with grinder attachment for convex grinds and secondary bevels, I haven't used it enough to form a final opinion but so far so good.
I sometimes use micromesh abrasive strops on my Scandi grinds aswel.

I also bought this knife to support this shop since I saw that this company supplies the Ukrainian soldiers with knives.
The current model has 1066 steel. 59-60 HRC
My question is, if you're in the woods and you find your knife is dull, wouldn't you sharpen it?
I know you are testing the knife for your friend, but aren't you testing it to see how the knife performs in actual use?
I love what you're doing and I am learning a lot from this video and I am only halfway through it.
It just didn't make sense watching you use a knife that was dull.
You seem like a no nonsense common sense guy.
I don't think you would work with a knife if it was giving you this much problems, would would simply sharpen it to make the job easier.
Just my opinion. It didn't seem like you were showing the knifes real potential, which is a shame for me since I came here to see what kind of knife I bought.
I won't return it, even if you say it's a bad knife, because I bought it to support the company.
I have a hinderer and a Randall knife for the woods.

Most people test a knife "out of the box" it really should arrive sharp enough to use, other people have reviewed this knife and found it really sharp out of the box.

Where do I begin? First of all, The BPS B1 is not nor advertised as a Stainless steel knife, It is a High Carbon Steel 1066. Second , Its made in the Ukraine , Not China! Next , The sheath is of a higher quality than any knife its price range or even double. I personally own several of these knifes and they ALL came Razor sharp ! When you say things like " I don't know how the Scandi edge will hold up ? " You might want to find that out before doing a "Review" on You Tube, Just saying. You never started your test with a sharpness test ... nor did you test it again at the end. Every knife has its limitations ( this one as well ) Their is nothing wrong with not liking a knife , But be fair on your reviews . It kinda felt like you had already made up your mind about the B1 prior to testing it out.
