The way Vermeer sees that Griet is in pain so he pulls her to him...I keep hitting the replay button on that part just because in that moment you can see the expression on his face which is a mixture of longing, guilt and intensity. The scene was believable and beautiful.
I'm sorry to break it to you but you have this wrong! I watched this back in College for Humanities class it was a great movie.......but the scene here is anything but sweet and innocent. The entire scene is essentially a symbolic sex act between the two characters. He "penetrates" her with the earring and she cries on top of that. The tears are not from pain, however, but from emotion and passion. This is the twilight of their secret emotional but unfortunately platonic "affair." He's completely obsessed. He's haunted by her mystique. His lust insatiable! He is stupefied by her innocence and raw beauty----a fatal combination for an artist like that. Colin Firth should've won an Oscar for this role. He expresses his addiction and infatuation for this young girl in an unbelievable way. I must add that Johansson probably also had her best performance in this movie in her career in my opinion.
@apie77 he has this look on his face when he is putting in her pearl earring and it hurts that he hates it. his expression is great and expresses so much without saying a thing that truly shows how great an actor colin firth really is.
Fav scene ever. you can feel the intensity without even talking a lot. great casting.

I agree! I think it's really sweet too when he tries to comfort her!

Easily the most intimate and erotic scene in the entire movie. Love.
Not love but Art .
@apie77 I think he would of been a gentle lover if they had got together.
I might be wrong about the time period but I think they didn't have knowledge of bacteria yet so Vermeer actually wouldn't have heated the needle
Am I the only one who is moved to tears at this scene? I don't really know why tho
This scene is so sexually frustrating.
