You guys are really good! Appreciate the exact steps and descriptions-thank you
Big thanks! It's a cool method
Thank you for the tip and Amazon has it all of course!
Good deal! :) Have fun with it
This was awesome!
Thank you for sharing hunnies! xoxo
thanks for checking it out
Wicked kool stuff
That does it, I'm gonna try this asap !
Thank you guys, greetings from Subic Bay, Philippines
Good luck with it! and have fun! :)
Interesting!
Oh my gosh thank you that’s awesome
thanks for checking it out
Just started to use this method to restore roman pottery found in Kent, England. Thank you, works perfectly - and CHEAP!
Found Roman pottery! Sounds exciting
That is a great tip! And good results too! It was odd seeing you out of the bus 🤣
Gotta leave the bus once in a while :)
Good video
I do this with a mix of glycerin, corn starch and mineral spirits (to thin the silicone) - the glycerin (the active ingredient in the dish soap) acts as hydration for the silicone to cure. I use a more diluted mix for the first coat and you may need to create a flange around the bottom in most cases depending on the application.
Wow, really cool to hear! Thanks for the tips
...maybe try dipping it in a thin oil (like baby oil...) drain,
and then molding with the silicone?
great idea! thanks
New videoooo ✨✨
Oh yeah! :)
Could you brush on the first coat? Then wait for it to dry and then re-coat a few times? Or thing it down and paint it on a few times, letting it dry in between as they do with 'smooth on'?
Sounds like a cool idea and worth trying.
Maybe use some nonstick cooking spray? may help, and tapping when you fill the mold with the plaster to get the air bubbles out. may help.
Ahhh, both good ideas ... we're gonna do it again and see how it goes
look into thinning the same silicon with mineral spirits .... you can pour it
Oh, cool idea ... thanks for the tip!
Hey I am really interested in doing multiple casts off of the silicone mold. I was curious if you know how long the mold lasts(its silicone so I'm sure it lasts as long as a traditional silicone mold) and were there any issues with recasting? Thanks in advance!!!
It really all depends on things like the shape of the object and size of the mold. A thick mold around a simple object will last a long time and through many uses. Tearing the mold is the thing to avoid.
This is a brilliant idea, thanks for sharing! I wonder whether the amethyst would have come out of the silicone if you had brushed it with soapy water (or pure Dawn) beforehand?
I think that would probably help ... the shape of the object is also a big factor. Many complex sides is hard to work with

You can thin silicone with paint thinner... so you may be able to thin and pour it...
hmmmm, will have to try that on the next go round :)
Would it be possible to do the reverse of this? Make a cast using plaster, and subsequently fill it with silicone pour? I need to make some medical training aids to teach people how to treat gunshot wounds and am trying to do it as economically as possible.
I think that would work -- you'd just have to give the silicone enough time to set up ... and removing it might be tough, depending on the size of the gunshot wound/cavity, but it's "worth a shot"
Can you reuse the mold or do you have to start over again?
That all depends on the shape of the object. Some end up ripping and some can be reused. It all depends. Good luck!
That was so cool! Does either of you know where I can use a 3D printer? Maybe a place like Kinkos. I have a tiny piece of jewelry I would like to get about 20 or 30 made!
A very few libraries have them. You might ask at your local nextdoor.com page.
Ya know, they're pretty available at large universities, but it's hard to get access. At this point, you kinda need to know someone with one. In my experience, they don't always work as well as you'd think or hope
good idea!
See if there is a Fab Lab near you. www.fabfoundation.org/index.php/fab-labs/index.html
I didn't realize Fab Labs were all over the place! Yeah, great idea
Can you do this on really big sculptures
You can try, but I'm guessing you'll have trouble with the mass of silicone breakiing down
what is the zig zag you speak of to get a clean cut?
razor blade maybe?
Can this be use to create a life cast of a foot?
Oh yeah but you’d have to stay still a long time.
4:52 willing to bet steve has cut his pinky before
That was a close one! Yeah, he's a walking ad for BandAids most days :)
would this be safe to use for food?
I wouldn't risk it as the silicone is not designed for food use in any way.
How do you make it food grade?
Not sure. You'd have to get the right materials
Hi!! Thank you so much for your video. I have a 7 year old daughter who is very creative and ask me for help to do some decorative figures to paint. we'll try to do few of them and share with you the results...If i'm lucky it wont be so messy. Regards
Good luck with the project!
can you use the same mould again
Yes unless you rip it
Is it a waste mold or is it reusable?
Reusable unless you rip it
Use a mould release spray on your items then it won’t adhere to complicated shapes.
Good tip. I've hear Pam works
Mold release??
Good idea if your mold sticks ... there are some you can make at home
You did not use a release on your molds in both stages. Use a light spray like Pam..
I’ll have to try that. Thanks for the tip!
I tried this process and after 2 weeks the silicone still has not cured!
Hmmmm, it must have gotten some intrusion to keep it from curing. Sorry to hear!
SPRAY EVERYTHING WITH WD40 first!!
good tip!
I advise anyone that try's this to wear a respirator. I watched this video to do it and ended up breathing in all the chemicals from it.
Good idea. Stay safe!
Isn't silicone pretty inert? I've never worn a mask when doing joints in kitchen or bathroom. And plaster is only dusty, once wet it definitely does not give off fumes. (I'm against unnecessary warnings because we become so used to them that we overlook the really important ones.)
