The HIGH WATER Route | 3 Day Packrafting Dumoine River VIA the Tote Road Trail | Grand Chute to O.R.

- This is a hiking and packrafting route revolved around the Dumoine Tote Road Trail, and the Lower Dumoine River, from Grand Chute to the Ottawa River. This route should be done during the high water season, spring run off as at low water, the paddling can be rather flat and tiresome in a packraft. While the flood levels on the Dumoine River create some challenges on the river, most sections have a safe line through them, as you can see in the video. The high water levels will also create challenges when hiking on the trail, such as wash outs, but that is the price to pay in order to run the river at this level. For logistics, I parked at Stonecliffe behind the municipal building, hiked to the boat launch in town, paddled across the Ottawa river to the mouth of the Dumoine, hiked the Dumoine Tote Road Trail to Grand Chute, and the paddled all the way back down the river and across the Ottawa River to my car.
At these levels, there are many sections of continuous rapids, some long sections lead to significant drops and ledges, ranging anywhere from class 1 to 5. Be sure to scout every single rapid before running, upriver it can look very mellow but the reality will be different. Also ensure that if water levels have changed, to re-scout, as the lines change dramatically based on a foot or so of flood, which is what I experienced on this trip.

A few additional comments for those looking to do the trail:
1 - This trip was done the first week in May so the reservoir above Rapides des Joachims was at its winter low thus the beaches on the Ottawa and lower Dumoine. They will not be present in the summer.
2. Please wear a drysuit early in the season, as the water is ice cold.
3. The hiking trail is dry May 15th onward. The flooding occurs for two weeks after the April melt and I caught the last of it when I was there.
4. The private camp at 27:52 is not part of the trail and was an error on my part. Please do not visit any private hunt camp. The only trail shelters are at Grande Chute and Bertrands/Fildegrand
5. Water levels (cms) - Day 1: 207 | Day 2: 196 | Day 3: 185
Cool , I enjoyed watching more then I had thought I would . I almost shut it off in the beginning but I'm glad I stuck around
Interesting! I'm genuinely curious what made you want to turn it off at first and then what made you like it? I watched this with my wife after editing and she was like "why are you talking so much in every clip?"...lol...I said it's not like I have a script or a plan, I just film stuff and pack it all together. Anyway, thanks for the honest feedback.
Amazing trip, i really like your content. Keep it up !
Thank you. It is a great trip!
Awesome adventure, man! Loving all the videos!
Glad you like them!
so good!!!!!
I was on the edge of my seat watching those chute runs!
Your Baffin Island trip inspired my purchase of a Alpaca raft and since then I have swam every 3rd class rapid on my local river!😂
Loved the solo adventure Man.👍
That's awesome man. Baffin Island was wild, but I am much more skilled paddler now. Packrafts are so much fun, glad it got you into them. I'm headed back up to the arctic this summer for some good fun. Stay safe out there.
Scary but wonderful, thanks for sharing! :)
Haha. It was a bit scary for me to be honest...but rapids always keep me on my toes.
Hey steve! Just amazing!! Take care, Paulo
Hi Paulo! Thanks man. Let's catch up soon.
Love the video. The helo pilots from petawawa need to build flight hours and often travel the river. I often csnoe across and hike the trail. Love all your videos!
Thanks man. I appreciate it. This trip was awesome, such a great trail and very fun rapids. I'd like to do it again at lower water. And the heli was wild! Didn't know what it was all about.
Love the Content. However, Think re-evaluating your Camera/software bc the whole video was pixaelated, especially when moving quickly on the water/river. Very hard to see any detail at all.
Hmmm...I'll look into it. It's filmed in HD so not sure what happened. Thanks for the heads up.
What was the water level?
I don't know if there is a gauge for this section. All I know is that it was flood levels. You won't see it like this except for spring melt.
@@Suluk46 There is a gauge, it looks like it peaked at 288CMS on May 2nd. I've done the river 5 times but always around 50CMS so it was crazy to see what some of the rapids look like at that level! I'm going to be doing another trip in just a few days so this was perfect for getting me excited. We start at the bridge up near Lac Benoit, there's some really nice rapids in the top section but there is a long flat section just before the grand chute. P.S. the Chinook helicopter was probably from the Petawawa military base about 60KM away. We were camping on the Noir River and had one land on a sandbar just on the other side of the river from us.
@@matteoneville4575 Lol, I had no idea there was a gauge and just googled it and there is! I ran the river on the afternoon of May 9th and all day on the 10th, so it looks like levels were about 196 and 185 for each day. If you look closely from when I was hiking up river on the 8th, the levels were 207 so by the time I had hit Red Pine is had dropped ~20 or so, and were much easier to run. If they stayed at 207 or higher, I am not sure I would have the skills to do the sneaky lines I did. The packraft really is a chore to paddle on flat water and wind in the face, so I try and only use it on full moving water. On the drive home, I saw a bunch more helicopters and then realized how close I was to Pet air base...makes sense. Although the low fly by really blew my mind at the time!
Have fun on your trip! And be safe. Hope the bugs aren't out in full force yet :)
