Finally someone else who doesn't have a thickness planer and made a cutting board! I thought I was alone. I made a small edge grain board as my first one and learned a lot along the way. Nice job.
Great job! I too until recently did my projects workout plainer, router, palm sanders and so on. However I’ve recently broke down and bought a few of those gadgets to make my projects easier given my bad back. However I must add I bought them used not brand spanking new. 😆 But 1st time watching your video. You did a great job and the board came out beautiful. I will be making a couple different size cutting boards for my wife. Tonight in conversation she mentioned she was going to order some news boards online. Now my wife loves and appreciates my builds so she is in for a wonderful surprise. So thank you sir and oh I DID subscribe. 🙏
tried doing this without a planner and there are just too many variables and too many sheets of sandpaper needed to get all the boards perfectly straight, same thickness, etc., in the end i found it was worth the money to go out and get a planner, i got a wen, very nice.
The trick is getting one side as close to flat as possible during the glue up so you can use it for the bottom. I don’t think it’s as important for the top to be perfectly flat. That being said, I agree that the planer is worth the money. Enjoy the Wen, I’ve had good experiences with their tools.
Lovely job. I have made it my goal never to buy a planer... One tip I could offer is to make sure that the edge grains of the strips are all facing the same direction before gluing up. So when (NB when - not if!) you do pull out that hand plane you don't find yourself smoothing one strip but tearing out the one next door.
Nice video. Thanks for sharing. Put a strip of masking tape on your clamp bars. In time the glue will build up and cause problems using the clamps. And it’s a major pain removing the glue.
I know it's been a while since you've posted this video, and hopefully you'll respond to a question, but do you remember how long the total process was for this project? Most things I make for myself, but I like to pay myself for a job by knowing I made an X amount of value for an 8 hr day, 10 hr day, etc.
Well next purchase will be a plane , and a new belt for the drill press which i use with my router bits . You would think a belt should last longer than 22 years but it's slippin! Nice video
Pretty sure this is a real stupid question but I am new to making cutting boards so can you explain to me what you mean by "raising the grain" (@10:05)? Nice to finally see someone make a cutting board without using a planer! Turned out awesome :-)
When you wet the board down it will cause the wood fibers to rise and will make it feel slightly rough. By using water first and then doing a final sanding you won’t have those raised fibers when you apply the mineral oil. Hope that helps.
Jackie, glue is actually stronger than nailing it. Plus I've never heard of nailing a cutting board. In reference to using nails or brads, I often times use that in conjuction with my projects so I can continue working on them while the glue dries. I believe it was Steve Ramsey who did a test on different joints using only glue, and the board snapped before the glued joint did. Hope that helps clear it up for you!
The idea of doing this without a planer is great, but you can definitely see a bow in your board. Most noticeable when you were sanding it, you could see it rocking. Thats the exact reason the planer is needed, unfortunately. Guess i will just have to bite the bullet and get one.
You’re right but the uneven side was the top. The bottom was perfectly flat. I probably could have spent a little more time working on the top to get it perfectly flat but I wasn’t quite as concerned with it.
You know you are routing in the wrong direction. You should be going counter clockwise, not clockwise. You are climbing on top of the wood. You have no control that way. But overall nice job.
Pretty sure this is the first "beginner" cutting board video that I have watched that doesn't use a planer and jointer haha. Thank you

Thanks! I will admit that I did break down and buy a planer recently but if nothing else I appreciate it more now.

I do not have a planer so this looks like a good method, I will give it a go and see how I get on, thanks for sharing
You bet. Hope your build goes well.
Me neither, just started this hobby so not so much in the line of tools,
Thx for posting, merry Christmas 🎁🎄
Very useful brother! Looks nice!

Like that concept, nice board will be trying it
Thanks, good luck.

22 years? They just done make things that last anymore. 😂 Glad you enjoyed the video.
Beautiful cutting board!!!!!
good job.
I think it looks Great.

@@millcovewoodworks1484 awesome, thanks so much 🙏😊
How does the glue hold up
Beautiful! Is there a reason you only glued and didn’t both glue and nail?
The glue is more than strong enough to hold over the long term.

Sweet!
Sweet board
Thanks!
How much do u sell them for
AWESOME!
Thanks!

This might be a silly question but - this is not an end grain cutting board, right? The surface of the board is not the end grain of the wood...
Correct, this is not end grain it’s edge grain.

Thanks for the feedback. Always good to learn where my mistakes are and I make more than a few on most projects.
You did use a “planner”…. 😂
Umm he uses a planer
He uses a plane, not a planer.
We both know he did!!! When he was cutting the boards to size the dewalt planer was to the right side!!!
I've heard good feedback about the woodglut instructions.
Дерьмо а не доска. Торцы с какой стороны? Такие доски школьники делают.
Good work bud. Love the board
