    Great response - I am fine with manual focus and love the idea of a lens with character for low light photos. I will also do some video, so it sounds like it might be a good fit for my needs, especially at this price point. I really appreciate your helpful comments!

    For cinema work it's best to center crop the FX3 anyways so you're not down scaling or line skipping, which will allow you to do your noise filter in post, which is dramatically better and a bit softer. The in-camera noise filters part of the down scalling algorithm kill the color data.

    Thanks for the very thorough and helpful video. How do you feel about the 24 mm used primarily for still photography at night? Are there others you would prefer at this lower price point. For reference, I am using the OM1. All the best to you, Bob

    • @AlexPerri
      @AlexPerri  9 місяців тому +1

      No problem! Umm I wouldn’t necessarily get a cinema lens primarily for photography unless you’re fine with no autofocus. I like shooting photos with cinema lenses because it adds a whole other layer of character to my photos, kinda like shooting with vintage lenses. So it really depends if you want something with autofocus or not but if you don’t care about that, then you’ll probably get some really nice photos with it, especially with the T/1.2 aperture for nighttime.

    I do love the build quality of these. It's better than what I have of other lenses that are more than twice as much. The optics could be accused of being "flawed". But as someone who collects vintage lenses, I love flaws. The focus/t-stop gears are pretty soft and very easy to bump off target but I've chosen to control them with the SmallRig MagicFiz so I don't personally mind. I did have an issue with the t-stop ring being too close to the body and having a hard time getting a focus puller around the cage ua-cam.com/video/3I3tUTxDBxU/v-deo.html
    I've stopped saying they're "good for the price". I just think they are good and am happy. Just picked up a used moment anamorphic and I am going to play with that some more.

    • @AlexPerri
      @AlexPerri  9 місяців тому +1

      I totally agree with everything you’re saying. I love flaws and character lenses like this have. There’s definitely a time and place for the cleanest looking images possible, but so far I haven’t personally found a need for it. All my clients have been very happy with everything I’ve produced with lenses with more character and most of the time they think it looks more film or movie like and love it.
      And yea, those damn rings are a little too sensitive, but I’m learning to live with it. I’m still going to primarily be using my SLR Magic MicroPrime CINE lenses to be honest, because I’m absolutely in love with them, but this set will definitely be a great alternative for me from time to time.
      I also just picked up the SIRUI anamorphic adapter which can attach to almost any lenses so I’m looking forward to playing around with it on both sets of lenses.

    • @AlexPerri
      @AlexPerri  9 місяців тому +1

    Great review but I personally steer away from any lenses that are a "native mirrorless mount" and do not have auto focus. If you're buying a manual focus lens(especially a set) imo, you're way better off buying/using/renting fast Ef or Pl glass. Because both of those mounts work on nearly any other camera sensor/brand which is infinitely valuable for so many reasons like resale, or shooting pick-ups or specialty-cam shots on a different cameras for the same project. Also, if you're using a "mirrorless body", one of the biggest perks of those systems is that with EF or PL glass you can filter from behind the lens which is so handy for gimbal/steadi-cam work or shoots where you don't want to spend time waiting for filter swaps. In summation, I think the Nightwalkers are just a low cost trap. You buy em thinkin it's an inexpensive score but after you shoot 3 or 4 projects, you now need a different look but now you're stuck with em. Because sadly nobody will buy em because your lenses are rf mount... but all the potential buyers(or maybe even renters) shoot with E or L or M43 or EF or PL or whatever else. 😬

    • @AlexPerri
      @AlexPerri  9 місяців тому +1

      Those are all very valid points, but that definitely won’t apply to everyone. For example, I’m someone who shoots for a variety of projects from corporate clients to music videos to short films, and I’ve literally shot everything over the past 2 years on my SLR Magic MicroPrime CINE lenses. That ended up being way more than just 3 or 4 projects and I never really felt I needed another look or style. Now if I was shooting big high budget commercials or something where the client would really dictate what the look would be, it would totally make sense to rent lenses. But as a solo shooter working on smaller projects, I think it’s totally fine to commit to a set of lenses that works for you.

      You guys sell your lenses? You don't just line your office shelves with that awesome display of history and your own origin story? Never sell a lens you already own full paid for, find another way to buy that next lens or you aren't even a real lens nerd. :P You never know when your next film might call for the broken bokeh and shady shadows of that grainy old vintage 90's cheapo lens. Mark my words. I've been to the future. In twenty years, that lens you hate will be the holy grail for some future hipster kid.

    • @natrix
      @natrix 8 місяців тому +1

      @@HistoricMetals Haha sage advice in most cases, but with these low cost lenses... they probably won't last 10yrs. Older glass was made to last with much better materials because they were sold to a generation who'd fight you to the death if you even brought up the idea of planned obsolescence. You're right, yesterday's flaws become tomorrow's character. But in this case, it'd be kinda hard to shoot with a lens that doesn't focus anymore or is stuck at f40...

      @@smalldeekgeorge I was going to buy the 7 Artisans before the Nightwalkers came out, but seeing his testing convinced me to get the Siruis instead as the reason I needed them was specifically for low light documentary and I will be shooting at t/1.2, t/1.8 quite a lot of the time.
      I was surprised how soft the 7 Artisans looked wide open. To me, not a strong optical design. CA doesn’t bother me at all, this subject for the documentary involves shooting in a lot of dark industrial spaces so CA fits right into the grungy locations. If I was shooting pretty people in nicely lit settings, it might bug me.
