Great video and I subscribed. (perhaps the best tips out there). Question Stu. If I have a load of brass instruments but want to send them to a sub mix aux track for just using one fader with various fx, and then I want to automate that group, do I use the same technique? I want to increase volume using automation of a group of brass with FX but only using one fader if possible. Many thanks.
Thanks, great to hear these are useful. Might make some more when I have some time. To answer your question. If you use a VCA and automate that you are effectively automating the channel faders as a group. However a routing folder or aux would be automating the audio sum of those channels. Both will work so it’s just a case of considering any fx send routing and what’s the best approach for the mix. Hope that helps. Stu
Hi Ben, For that I would use a routing folder or standard group track. This is because no information audio is actually sent to VCA, they simply control groups of other faders. Hope that helps?
Great question. When using a VCA you’re controlling the individual levels of each track in the group. Using a Bus means summing those tracks and controlling the level of the sum. Both methods have advantages, VCAs are especially useful when using (post-fader) sends to effects on individual tracks because the VCA is controlling the volume of the track and therefore the level going into the send.
Hi Diego. Great question. Routing folders act like aux tracks, so the signal actually gets routed in and out of them. Whereas, VCA's are controlling the members of a group (you can think of it as controlling the faders). So, I use both workflows. I like the tidiness of the folder tracks, but I still use VCAs where I want to automate a group.
I stumbled on your Channel, Stu. Looking into using VCAs more… good to see a familiar face in UA-cam Land!
Thanks mate!
Very interesting, as a newbee to Protools.
Super useful! Didn’t even know I could do this. Look forward to picking up more tips from you 🤓
You can do automation on a VCA as well!

great job Stu. thanks bunches. Ricky
Thanks :) What if I want to send my group to a "VCA" with plug-isn? Would that be like a reverb an my vocals "VCA"?

If I want to change the group level, why not just create a bus and use the bus fader? What's the advantage of using a VCA vs Bus

So if I want to use either folder tracks and VCA masters what do you think is the best setup?

@@MusicTechknowledgy thank you, I’ll start using VCA now. I use a lot the groups but I’ve never considered VCA useful before watching your video 😃
@@MusicTechknowledgygreat answer.
Thank You!
Thank you for watching 👍
