I'm not even Muslim but it meant a lot that you took the extra time to learn and talk about it instead of skipping over it. I feel like I better understand the character because of that! Love this show and your videos!
I am soooo glad that you talked about that mirror scene. I have never related more to a character than in that moment. The way she looks at herself, pulling down the top, covering it with the scarf. That mix of kind of anger and shame I guess that this top, a normal top not a crop top, will still invite comments and looks from mom or aunties. The top that everyone wears with no second thought is too short for you. Also, shoutout to the actress who plays her mom. Her acting is so real that it hurts my heart.
Even though I couldn't relate as much, it certainly made me feel for her because Iman is gorgeous and I definitely know what it's like to have issues from an overly strict parent that makes you feel ashamed for being you.
They did a good job with the parents. Sure, the mom is strict and the dad is the clown, but they didn't make them 2 dimensional cardboard cutouts. The one thing every person who becomes a parent eventually learns is, when the shoe is on the other foot with your own kids, you discover you are a lot more like your parents than you realize.
And may I also add that those are very common scenes for (almost) any South Asian household. Strict yet extremely loving & involved parents. Found some parts so relatable, had to literally LoL
Of course, we approach world based on the positions and the experience. When you have a leading position you would be more like your manager, similar for family hood
I honestly love how when Kamala dreams about the con she imagines Bruno will dress up as tony stark, but when they actually get there he’s dressed as Bruce banner. Says a lot about their characters. Super excited to keep watching this show.
I can't stress enough how much I love the visuals of this show. It really made great use of "sketchbook style" animations to create a fun and unique experience.
My dad hated the background art, complaining about how it's distracting and is just there to attract young people. Meanwhile I'm sitting there like those are some really cool effects, love the art style.. 😁

I completely understand why Marvel studios made her powers have cosmic appearance, because it's much colorful and flashier to look at unlike normal stretching like Reed Richard which is plain and standard
I think that’s the reason people don’t like the change. The creator said she didn’t want Kamala to have flashy powers like all the other female heroes. She wanted her to just be raw brawling

Speaking of Green Lantern, Kamala is obviously very creative and artistic, and with how her powers seem to differ from the comics in that she creates energy constructs, which is why rather than just a flat sheet of energy, like when her powers first activate earlier, it comes out as a giant hand. It somewhat reminds me of Kyle Rayner and how his ring constructs have more of an artistic flair.
The first episode was really really good! I'm almost 30 with no kids, & I actually enjoyed it! I think I love it because I'm a die hard MCU fan as well as someone who grew up watching Disney Channel Original Movies (which is what this show kinda reminds me of)
I wasn't expecting this show to be the most exciting, colorful, and heartfelt Marvel show in their lineup so far. This is coming from someone who enjoyed most of them very much. Never was too interested in this particular show, but gave it a shot (because its not like I'm NOT gonna keep up with the MCU. I'm hip, I'm cool) and I loved every second of it. I also appreciate your dedication to learning about and understanding the culture presented in the show. I knew near-nothing about Islam or Pakistani culture, and I learned some things because of you! The inclusivity and "everyone's welcome" vibe of your channel just adds another layer to the quality of your videos. Thanks, Ryan!
Ms. Marvel, in the comics, Kamala reminds me of my daughter so much. She's always daydreaming and drawing fantasy images. I connect with the parents in this show as I just want her to be safe and find her place in the world. Except, for me, I always told her to dream big and go for it. I was sheltered when I was a kid so I tried not to shelter my daughter. It's a difficult balance. I'm really loving this show as much as I loved the comics by G Willow Wilson. We watched this show last night together as a family and we were all smiles. I look forward to seeing the rest of the series. By the way, because of the comics, I learned quite a bit about Muslim culture. Quite fascinating actually. The fact that the older women have a lot of influence on their families is relatable to me as I grew up in a hispanic family with aunties and abuelas that had quite a bit of say so.

the scene with the dad as the hulk perfectly portrays her parents, her dad is trying to be supportive without actively defying his wife whilst the mother is just trying to be controling...when she refusies the mom says my way or no way where as the dad is genuinely hurt.
I’m surprised I actually liked this show. It was bubbly and fun in my opinion which I love. It was sad how the parents spent all that time thinking of those hulk costumes and they got ridiculed by their daughter
Yeah, the costume looked goofy but her parents was willing to find the middle ground with her, shows they're not that strict with her, well not as much as your stereotypical South Asian parents.
This was so damn fun! The use of color and the overall style is so appealing, I was worried the writing might be a little too “hello fellow kids”, but I think it works. Can’t wait for more episodes
Absolutely loved the first episode! The style and vibe was so vibrant throughout. It did a better representation of modern high schools than Homecoming. I can’t wait to watch the rest of the series.
The first episode was fun. Abbi was my favorite simply because he's that fun muslim dad who loves to play around. I don't like the change to her powers though. Had some low expectations and yeah, pretty great.
As always, freaking amazing breakdown! Just never thought that I'd be able to see Rajinikanth in one of your video xD (the actor in the video song "Hey nanba" from the movie Linga, which was used when he crashes the car) He is a legendary Indian actor with a strong fan-base and has worked in the Industry for decades!
2:30 Totally correct about Cockatoo and Carol's F16, but there's another layer to this reference. Captain marvel is shown next after the f16... so the deeper layer is: it's a bird, it's a plane, it's superman.... cos captain marvel is OP, and so is Superman.
She flew an f-15 in the movie, not an f-16. It’s a different aircraft the biggest noticeable difference is the the f16 is smaller, has one engine, and one vertical stabilizer as opposed to the bigger f-15 with two engines, and two vertical stabilizers.
I really enjoyed this first episode. It really captured the spirit of a dorky teen (much like I was when I was a dorky teen). The theme of restrictive parents can be true, no matter your culture. And wow, that con must have been so much fun for them to set up. Overall, a strong start, I hope the show can continue to be so strong.
So I’m not 100% sure, but the bus driver during Kamala’s dream plan possibly is Tim Sweeney, the CEO of Epic Games (makers of Fortnite)? She does exclaim “Epic!” just before we briefly see the driver. They do bring up in the episode a rumour that Thor is a gamer, which us the viewers know he does play Fortnite in Endgame. Also, one of the main features of Fortnite is that players begin the game jumping out of a bus.
Here's something I noticed... Kamala's councilor quotes Mulan. In the comics, she gets her powers from Terrigen mist, which was a big part of Agent's of SHIELD. Ming Na Wen, who voiced Mulan was a main character in that show.
Not an Easter Egg exactly... The rolling head of Giant Man was reminiscent of the Raiders of the Lost Ark parody in Weird Al's UHF movie. It seemed to be rolling way too long.
Took u long enough Ryan. Been waiting on this one. More more more! And I love the crazy visuals, something new and unique but still very interconnected. Love it.
At 2:33 with the Cockatoo and Carol’s plane, I actually thought this was a reference to the classic Superman line: ‘It’s a bird, it’s a plane…’ except this one ends with Captain Marvel instead of Superman.
Best part for me was when they played the song Ko Ko Korina such a classic wasn't expecting that at all. All the songs played were by Pakistani singers like Sohniye I love you by Nahid Akhtar, Eva B's song rozi played during end credits which was lit and then Riz Ahmeds song.
Remember the multiverse holds infinite realities so the variants like steampunk captain marvel captn panther iron marvel and etc may actually exist like remember there are infinite realities and maybe realities that these variants are present in
He knows that. What he is saying is that public doesn't know that the original shield is broken, so they believe the shield Sam got is the original shield. (Which seems to be the case in TFATWS). _However_ even though he says this Kamala's artwork clearly shows Cap with a broken shield.
I really liked this first episode. It was cute and the stylising is gorgeous. Loved that surprise appearance of DoDC at the end. I thought Cleary looked like he recognised the powers though?
I did not expect to like this show as much as I do. It has so much heart, and even though I’m a middle aged man, I found myself identifying with Kamala throughout. Can’t wait to see the rest!
Same here. In my case it has to do with a strict upbringing and as such I also identify and sympathize with Kamala. The Ms Marvel comics did a really good job capturing that as well.
Got to admit that i was only going to watch this show so that i could come here and see Doug in videos and to see my mom who passed away years ago make her cameos...but this 1st episode was great. by far the strongest start of any of the marvel tv shows so far. Helps that i played the Avengers game a while ago and got to know the Ms Marvel character.
I actually picked up on how you said that Kamala doesn’t want to be who her family wants her to be, which is another Mulan parallel. (Sorry. HUGE Disney fan.)
This def has a more fun, lighter feel than the other phase 4 shows and I’m here for it. The other shows are great, but I’m a little tired of getting beat over the head with the post Thanos fallout that weighed heavy over the others.
Her bands look more like the Kree Nega Bands than the Quantum Bands that Quasar and Marvel Boy used. The Nega Bands were worn by the original Captain Mar-Vel and his son Genis-Vel both of whom were called Captain Marvel.
Is it possible that her Nani is an Inhuman? Also, after seeing the post-credit scene, I am thinking that Jennifer Walters (She-Hulk) or Matt Murdock (Daredevil) might help her in her cases with the authorities. Looking forward to what the series will bring. Love the graphics in this series and how it depicts a Marvel fan's fantasy.
I wouldn't be shocked if they shift the concept of the Inhumans and the mist back a few generations in the MCU to be honest. So they can still "have" it but not have to do yet another, world wide event that they'd have to reference in every property going forward.
They easily could. But instead of Terrigin mist, it's artifact triggered. So the band triggers her DNA, like they did for her grandmother. Her mom was talking about how they were daydreamers in the car before Kamala starts daydreaming again.
Who Dey!!! My goodness Ryan, just when I thought I couldn't love this channel enough. You go and do something like represent my hometown football team. You rock dude.
1:55 but she did show Cap using the broken shield just before Captain Marvel enters the fight. so it's more like people didn't know the exact details minute by minute because, you know, it wasn't like the fight was being broadcasted on youtube or anything. 8:42 Zuzu turned off the light. not Kamala.
from minute one when they announce this show, I thought it was going to be the worst Marvel property so far alongside Black Widow but I love it, pretty great show, character and main actress
I'm so grateful that @Screencrush took the time to understand the subtle South Asian themes and nods in the episode. Ryan, you got an honorary brown badge.
entire plot feels like a Marvel version of "Turning Red". Both involve a young girl with an over protective mom. Both families come from very traditional families. Both girls have a different life that is different from what their parents see and expect. Both find out they have powers and there is even a conversation with the mom saying "this isnt you" when they get a glimpse of their daughter's true life
I recently rewatched Loki, and when He who remains talks about his variants sharing technologies, the little reforming visuals show two of them standing next to a desk with little cylinders on it about the size of Kamala’s arm band. Also, the armband creates matter and purple energy. Alioth at the end of Loki is purple and consumes matter and energy. Could Kamala’s bracelet have been made by Kang?
I feel like it was a missed opportunity not putting at least some of the cosplayers from hawkeye at the Avenger Con. It just feels like something they wouldn't miss.
I loved this episode and the Scott Pilgrim vibe and dynamic presentation of most things while people where talking was amazing. One thing I did notice was whenever Kamala was talking to anyone outside of her family her imagination went into over drive and would draw on her surroundings but whenever her family talked to her there were no drawings in the background and I think it is because she is so suppressed by her family it literally shuts her imagination down. Great break down but I am curious to know if you thought the same thing I did when the hammer hit, “well, she’s dead.” Yet could it be that was a play on no one dies in the shows?
lol haters really wanted reviewers to slam this. Glad to see more positive reviews of this. Its a show that is needed and Kamala Khan is a great character and really happy to see Muslim representation. 🏳️🌈🇸🇪
Do you think the reason Ant Man was in the Rogers musical in Hawkeye was because of Scott’s podcast? I can totally imagine Scott portraying himself and cap as really good friends that go way back which might have given the impression to the musical writers to include Ant Man? Or it could be that on the podcast Scott talked about going back to 2012 with cap and iron man so he was technically there when the battle of NY happened? 🤔 I can also completely imagine Ant Man 3 opening with Scott making his podcast and we get hints of what information he gave to the public!
Impressive bit of camera work/direction when we join Bruno as he's walking with his bike and gets a text from Kamala. There are no visible cuts as he walks to the bike rack and responds with the practical neon text. It then watches him go in the building, pans up to the window where he walks in and sits down and goes in the window a little before the next cut.
Did they really forget to put Avenger's tower in the skyline? It's a bit odd that the most iconic point in the MCU's main earth city could have been overooked, considering how often it's been inserted into other projects.
I love this show because it's so original and far from the typical mcu shows on Disney and movies. It gives us the perspective of a civilian into the marvel universe so it gives the show a but more flavor to it. But it be so crazy if this show was in 3-d lol but this show has the potential to be really great with being original and having the greatest visual effects. Great episode one. 👍
This isn't an Easter egg but rather a noticeable absence of certain Easter eggs... No Spider-Man references at all! (Which I suppose *is* an Easter egg of everyone forgetting him in NWH!)
Wow! You really put a lot of work into your videos. You try as much as possible to help viewers understand every little detail about the plot of every movie/series. Appreciate that very much.
Someone else may have already pointed these out, but: 1. In the cold open, she did, in fact, acknowledge Cap’s broken shield (when she was talking about when all seemed lost: shield is cracked). 2. I’m pretty sure that was John Krasinski who was cosplaying Cap (in the actual Cap Avengers uniform) when she and Bruno get in the AvengerCon bus in her fantasy sequence (just to their left/to the left of the door), which is a reference to him having auditioned for the part (I bet he was around for his Multiverse work so they asked him to sit on the bus for a few minutes in the costume).
the hulk scene with dad was so relatable as a desi child. our parents wants to restrict us , but at the same time wants to live our dreams as per their convenience. obviously since they don't understand, they would end up creating a situation which they think is 100% acceptable but for us it's quite the opposite. we reject it and everyone gets hurt
Kamal's school counsellor is called Mr Wilson and we can see on his desk that his initials are "G.W. Wilson" after the original writer. Was so excited when this series was announced and I was not disappointed. The Ms Marvel comics were what got me into Marvel ❤️❤️🦹🏽♀️

She flew an f-15 in the movie, not an f-16. It’s a different aircraft the biggest noticeable difference is the the f16 is smaller, has one engine, and one vertical stabilizer as opposed to the bigger f-15 with two engines, and two vertical stabilizers.
Noticed that too, but only a fighter jet fan or G1 Transformers fan would notice 😅
Loved it gave a huge Scott Pilgrim the movie vibe, lots of fun,
Here's something I noticed... Kamala's councilor quotes Mulan. In the comics, she gets her powers from Terrigen mist, which was a big part of Agent's of SHIELD. Ming Na Wen, who voiced Mulan was a main character in that show.
The characters combined by Kamala's head are like a pun on the reference to Marvel's Access comics.
Mr. Khan is my favorite character, I just love him so much
Not an Easter Egg exactly...
Love it.
At 2:33 with the Cockatoo and Carol’s plane, I actually thought this was a reference to the classic Superman line:
‘It’s a bird, it’s a plane…’ except this one ends with Captain Marvel instead of Superman.
Right! Felt like I was going crazy that he avoided it.
Bruno made mention of Photon, now I'm wondering if it was inspired by sm activities Monica Rambeau must have had since WandaVision.
As someone who was raised in chilltown (jersey city 201) I enjoyed some of the homage they paid to my hometown I can dig that. great first episode!
Remember the multiverse holds infinite realities so the variants like steampunk captain marvel captn panther iron marvel and etc may actually exist like remember there are infinite realities and maybe realities that these variants are present in
Oh man Rayan you are the real MVP of explaining, not only about the show but also about the real life connection to it.
The shield given to the Smithsonian is the one Cap gave Sam at the end of Endgame, not the one that was broken.
He knows that. What he is saying is that public doesn't know that the original shield is broken, so they believe the shield Sam got is the original shield. (Which seems to be the case in TFATWS). _However_ even though he says this Kamala's artwork clearly shows Cap with a broken shield.
1:20 As a minor UA-camr myself, I was shocked by her low numbers (though obviously it's for dramatic effect) - her videos would be killing it.
I really liked this first episode. It was cute and the stylising is gorgeous.
Loved that surprise appearance of DoDC at the end. I thought Cleary looked like he recognised the powers though?
This is the first time I don't skip and ad of yours, that app really looks interesting and you pointed out really interesting books.
Also surprised you didn't theorise on the Negative Zone when she puts on the band. But this is just a detail, great video, once again!
The first episode was a fresh , new ,and different from all the other mcu shows. It's an all feel try hard just pure fun ,and entertaining....love it.
Ryan did the best break down from all the channels for this episode. love the research that went past just comic book easter eggs
This def has a more fun, lighter feel than the other phase 4 shows and I’m here for it.
The other shows are great, but I’m a little tired of getting beat over the head with the post Thanos fallout that weighed heavy over the others.
I loved loved LOVED MS MARVEL'S first episode!
What did you think of the episode?
it sucked
It had quite the difference in style comparing it to the other shows, can't wait to see the rest of them
Nah it was a good entrance gave me spiderverse vibes
I actually thought it wasn’t too bad. I thought it would be worse, but I liked the style and feeling of the show
@@aiddinr Same
Her bands look more like the Kree Nega Bands than the Quantum Bands that Quasar and Marvel Boy used. The Nega Bands were worn by the original Captain Mar-Vel and his son Genis-Vel both of whom were called Captain Marvel.
Yes! Add to that the fact that she goes into the negative for a few seconds when she first puts them on.
8:42 Zuzu turned off the light. not Kamala.
Yep. The scene where the light flickers is later when Kamala goes to the attic and fishes out the bangle.
I'm glad you mentioned that camp Lehigh was also converted to ruble.
from minute one when they announce this show, I thought it was going to be the worst Marvel property so far alongside Black Widow
but I love it, pretty great show, character and main actress
Black widow isn't close to the worst they've done. That still belongs to The Dark World, and The Incredible Hulk.
I love all the main actors so far!
@@Wico90YT RIGHT!!!

@@Wico90YT it's the one I dislike the most. so my opinion, not an argument here whatsoever
The host at the Captain Marvel cosplay event was played by Agent M a.k.a Ryan Penagos - Vice President & Creative Executive, Marvel New Media.
I'm so satisfied that you included the "O Nanba" track.... I watched many breakdowns of the episode but didn't find it..
Thanks so much
I feel like it was a missed opportunity not putting at least some of the cosplayers from hawkeye at the Avenger Con.
I'm just gonna call it right now, Agent Cleary is a skrull.
Doug singing the Bruno song is everything. Dead. I'm dead. Thanks ScreenCrush! ~Be Blessed
lol haters really wanted reviewers to slam this.
I can also completely imagine Ant Man 3 opening with Scott making his podcast and we get hints of what information he gave to the public!
I want Marvel to actually create Kamala’s UA-cam channel on the real UA-cam and to post animations like Kamala did for this episode on it
It exists! only 4 short vids up but it does exist. Everyone sub!
@@sonalita_ what's the channel name?
@@mjsupport78 literally as it's shown in the show "Sloth Baby Productions"
@@sonalita_ Apparently only around a thousand people in the world have figured it out yet.
Man, the research you've done around the topics is really impressive.
I do love this series. So colorful and has alike spiderman into spiderverse approach.
When I saw the glinch of the cockatoo and jet I believed it was an easter egg of something like "it's a bird, it's a plane. It's Captain Marvel?".
Thought this was just an amazing episode, so fresh and interesting and just loved the format. Long may it continue.
I honestly thinks this series has the potential to be the best MCU Disney+ series.
Nope
That episode was god awful
Yex
This isn't an Easter egg but rather a noticeable absence of certain Easter eggs... No Spider-Man references at all! (Which I suppose *is* an Easter egg of everyone forgetting him in NWH!)
I didn't do anything to Gunpowder
🤣🤣
WTF
Great breakdown. Thank you Ryan! I loved the first episode. Excited to see this series play out.
Man my kids and I LOVED this show!!! So good so far , I hope Marvel doesn't mess it up!!!
Ms. Marvel episode 1 is amazing, best streaming series out right now
I love all the ant man references, Scott and hope are my favorite and I'm so glad they are appearing more and I relate to her in many aspects
Cgi of her powers sucks but all others things are good
It's a show bro limited budget why are u people always complaining about everything
@@thatomanaka323 so you're also agreeing about it and also complaining about complain 👍🏻
Wow! You really put a lot of work into your videos. You try as much as possible to help viewers understand every little detail about the plot of every movie/series. Appreciate that very much.
Someone else may have already pointed these out, but:
Great job Ryan, it makes the show 10x better to watch!
People were saying the show was gonna be mid, but I rlly loved this episode and how they pointed every marvel fan out👀
